PF – Submissions Open for Phylum Press. Theme: Bryophytes / Phoenix Moss
July 31, 2025 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Made up of mosses, liverworts and hornworts, bryophytes are small land plants which can live in a wide range of temperatures, elevations and moistures.
- They do not need roots to survive, instead taking in water and nutrients from the air. These small lifeforms are able to produce both sexually and asexually, making them a truly adaptable phylum capable of living quite literally between a rock and a hard place so long as they have a bit of water to help them grow.
- Throughout time, humans have used bryophytes to test for pollution, protect plants, create serene gardens, and even dress wounds in WW1.
Submissions Guide
- We’re looking for fiction and poetry that takes its inspiration from the world around us, especially that which somehow engages with the current Phylum.
- Word Count: Up to 5,000 words for fiction and up to 5 pages for poetry. If you want to surpass either of these, pitch us a case why!
- Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Phylum Press is made up of writers just like you, and we know how hard submitting can be. That being said, please only submit your original, unpublished work.
Please email submissions to phylumpress@gmail.com with:
- Your work attached as a PDF file,
- “SUBMISSION – [Last name, Title]” in the subject line,
- The category/genre of your piece,
- A 100-word author bio which includes your name, the title of your piece(s), your website or artist’s social media handle (optional), and anything else you think is important to mention,
- Confirmation that the piece is your own work, and you will inform us if it is published elsewhere.
Note:
- If we think your work is not quite there, we may offer you a conditional acceptance and request some edits. It is your right as an author to determine whether or not you want to take our suggestions, but refusing may limit your opportunities with our journal.
