SUMMARY:F - The Blue Frog Flash Fiction Prize. Theme: A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:2024 Theme: “A Sense of Place”\nWhether on the streets of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival or in a gas station bathroom somewhere outside Cedar Rapids\, where our characters are and where their stories take place has meaning. So we want to see stories were the setting comes to life and becomes a character all its own\, stories where the characters’ surroundings are irrevocably tied to their moments that matter\, stories where the setting reaches out and grabs the reader to place them right there in that specific time and place. It can be as grand as the moon or as mundane as the driveway\, we just want to be there! \nPrizes:\n1st Place: $500 \n2nd Place: $150 \n3rd Place: $50 \n** All three winners will also receive a signed book from the Guest Judge and the original artwork that accompanies their published story. \nRules & Misc.:\n— Fiction only. \n— 1\,000 words maximum (this is a firm limit). \n— All submissions should be the author’s original work and not previously published elsewhere (this includes blogs\, social media\, etc). \n— Multiple submissions are allowed\, but each should be submitted separately (with no limit to the amount of entries). \n— Simultaneous submission are allowed\, but please email to withdraw your submission as soon as it has been accepted elsewhere. SUMMARY:P - Passionfruit Poetry Prize. Theme: Being In Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Being In Bodies\n\n \n\nSubmissions to our first themed poetry competition are open until 31st January 2024 \n1ST PRIZE £250\n2ND PRIZE £50\n3RD PRIZE £25\nABOUT THE THEME:\nFor this poetry contest\, we are calling for poetry that engages with the experience of being in bodies. \nWe are always embedded in our environment. We inhabit physical bodies that exist in space while we are thinking\, feeling\, reading\, and writing. \nSend us poetry that recognises that embodiment in some way: poetry about breathing and breathlessness; poetry about soft touches and the sensation of sunlight on your skin; poetry about the body’s limits\, its pain\, its power and its powerlessness; poetry which makes us cringe and poetry that makes our blood boil; poetry that reminds us what it is to be human\, to exist in and to interact with bodies. \nAs always\, we are open to broad interpretations of the theme – feel free to surprise us and to stretch our imagination! \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nThe entry fee (per submission of up to 3 poems) is £4. If the fee prevents you from entering the contest\, get in touch with us at editor@passionfruitreview.com\nSubmissions are open to all poets writing in English.\nPoems must be previously unpublished.\nStrong language is fine – abusive or discriminatory language is not.\nSimultaneous submissions are welcome – just let us know promptly through the submissions manager if you need to withdraw any of your poems.\nSubmit 1-3 poems in a single file.\nPoems up to 40 lines will be considered (we consider longer poems as general submissions!)\nPlease note that the review process will be kept strictly anonymous. SUMMARY:PFN - Ecotone Magazine Seeking Submissions by Historically Underrepresented Writers Only
DESCRIPTION:Ecotone\, the literary magazine dedicated to reimagining place\, welcomes work from a wide range of voices. We are particularly interested in place-based work by people and from perspectives historically underrepresented in literary publishing and in place-based contexts: writers and artists who are Black\, Indigenous\, people of color\, people with disabilities\, people who are gender-nonconforming and LGBTQIA+\, women\, people with low access to wealth\, people from rural places\, and others. \nPlease note that\, depending upon interest\, we may need to close before the end of our general window in order to give the work we receive the attention it deserves. \nDo not include your name\, or other identifying information\, in the file name or the file itself.  \nProse\nWe appreciate a wide range of essays\, and are especially interested in nonfiction that engages deeply\, but not overly seriously\, with the sciences—ecology\, natural history\, and other fields\, in both Western and non-Western contexts. \nWe like to see fiction that is deeply rooted in place\, and/or that engages similarly with ecology\, natural history\, climate crisis\, et al. \nA prose submission consists of one prose piece (fiction or nonfiction) of no more than thirty double-spaced pages (approx. 10\,000 words). \n\nMost work we run is shorter than this upper limit.\nWe are also interested in shorter prose works (minimum 2\,000 words\, please).Poetry\n\nPoetry\nWe are especially interested in poetry that engages with the social and natural sciences and/or considers place\, ecology\, identity\, and climate crisis\, as well as poetry that uses form\, meter\, and/or other poetic constraints in innovative and expansive ways. Work in the French repeating forms (rondeaux\, ballades\, rondelets\, and the like) as well as in newer forms (golden shovels\, fibs\, etc.) is especially encouraged\, as is work that employs meters other than iambic. \nA poetry submission consists of three (minimum) to five (maximum) poems. \n

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Last Leaves Magazine. Theme: "Story"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\n\n\nSubmissions are OPEN! \nTheme for Issue 8: Story \nWe want the truth. Tell us about yourself\, your life. Moments where you realized you said the wrong thing\, did the right thing\, or fell short when you could have stepped up. We want tales of sonder\, when you realized the person on the park bench had an entire life you knew nothing about. When were you simply a supporting character? When did you feel like the main character? Give us the dark spaces where your emotions ran rampant and created their own version of what happened. Or: re-tell your favorite fairytale. Your least favorite. What childhood bedtime story touched you the most? Let us peer into your lives in a way only your closest friends do. Let’s get to know each other. \nPlease submit your poetry via email to lastleavesmag@gmail.com. Failure to adhere to the guidelines may invalidate your submission. If you have any questions or concerns surrounding the guidelines\, please send us an email prior to submitting. We’re always happy to help! As always\, our themes are very loose and open for interpretation. We provide guidelines\, but by all means take it and run with it! \n\n\nFor poetry: Please use “Poetry Submission” as the subject line. Send up to 5 poems (no more than 10 pages) as a single Word (.doc or .docx) attachment. Please start each poem on a new page. All work should be single-spaced and in Times New Roman\, 12-point font. \n\n\nDo not include your name or contact information in the documents. \n\n\nSubmitters are welcome to send work for both categories using the subject line “Poetry/Art Submission\,” with all documents attached to the same email. This helps us keep all your work in one place. \n\n\nPlease include a brief 50-word bio in the body of your email. Include your name as you would like it to appear in the magazine\, your email\, and links to your website and/or social media (if desired). We will trim the bio as-needed if it exceeds the word count. \n\n\nIf you’ve submitted to us in the past\, we kindly ask that you start a new email thread for each submission window (i.e.\, instead of replying to your previous submission\, start a new email with the subject line for the category you’re submitting to). \n\n\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted\, though please send us a message ASAP if your work is accepted elsewhere. We do not accept previously published work\, but we love reading your poems on Instagram @lastleavesmag. \nPlease only submit once per issue and wait until the next reading period to submit again. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The FruitSlice: A Queer Quarterly. Theme: "I Am in Love With You (no homo): Platonic Romance and Chosen Bonds"
DESCRIPTION:Note: Submissions are restricted to LGBTQ+ creators.\nWe want to delve deep into the world of connections and emotions that defy conventional boundaries. Our theme for this issue is an exploration of the multifaceted bonds we form\, focusing on both platonic romance and the significance of chosen bonds. \nIn a world where romantic love often takes center stage\, we aim to shed light on the profound\, complex\, and sometimes misunderstood relationships that exist outside the realm of traditional romance. We invite you to explore the intricacies of intense\, non-romantic connections that can rival even the most passionate love stories. Who says romcoms are just for lovers? Why can’t we buy our friends flowers or chase them down in the airport? We believe that every friendship is its own epic tale. I know that at least for me\, my romantic partners have a high bar to meet because my friends love me so well. \nWe are looking at the powerful ties we establish with friends who become family\, mentors who guide us\, and kindred spirits who feel like soulmates. These connections often transcend societal norms\, creating a unique tapestry of love\, support\, and shared experiences. \nAs with all our themes\, we encourage diverse interpretations. \nReflect on the friendships and chosen family members who have profoundly impacted your life. Explore the dynamics of relationships that challenge societal expectations and norms. Contemplate the moments of connection that have left a lasting imprint on your heart. Your interpretation of this theme can take many forms: essays\, poetry\, short stories\, artwork\, or any creative medium that resonates with you. \nWe’re excited to witness your exploration. Your contributions will help us celebrate the power of love\, connection\, and community in all its beautiful manifestations. \nSubmission Guidelines\nSubmission Email: Please send your submissions to submit@thefruitslice.com. \nWord Limit: We recommend keeping written pieces under 5 pages or under 1500 words to ensure a concise and engaging read. \nMultiple Submissions: There’s no limit to the number of submissions you can send our way. Feel free to share your work with us\, and we’ll give each piece the attention it deserves. \nThank you for being part of the Fruitslice community\, and we look forward to exploring your creative contributions!
