SUMMARY:PN - Rabbit: A Journal for Nonfiction Poetry Now Accepting Submissions for Issue 39. Theme: Mutiny
DESCRIPTION:Rabbit is currently accepting poetry submissions for Issue 39: the MUTINY Issue. \nWhen you don’t trust the captains\, it’s time to take back the ship. \nFor Rabbit: MUTINY\, we seek rogue poems that resist the usual rules of resistance. We’re after nonfiction poems\, in all aesthetic registers\, that scorn the tyranny of planned obsolescence\, false idolatry\, rabid anthropocentrism\, bad governance\, and the logic of the market above all else. Send us your long-sighted\, large-hearted\, reverent/irreverent calls to arms.  Any increment of subversion or transgression\, down to and including dumb insolence\, is eagerly solicited for this issue. Now is not the time to be a civic coward. \nWe invite poets to send up to 3 poems in one document through Rabbit’s Submittable site. Please include in the cover letter of your submission: \n• full contact details (postal address\, email) \n• 50-word max. bio \n• a short (50-word max.) response to the following: “Name a poem or a work that refuses to obey orders\, that incites rebellion\, or that questions the validity of authority\, and why it gets you.”

SUMMARY:PFN - Black Fox Prize Theme: "Fairy Tale Remix"
DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for its Winter 2024 writing prize. The theme for this round is “Fairy Tale Remix.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWhat if the big bad wolf was a person who had a past? Or what if Snow White wasn’t so perfect on paper? \nWe’re looking for original work that reimagines fairy tales from around the world! We challenge writers to reshape classic fairy tales and invent their own spellbinding versions. Give us a twist to a familiar plot\, introduce modern elements\, or explore unconventional characters. This theme is a chance to remix fairy tales in your own distinctive way. Enchant the hearts of our readers! \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $300 and publication in the Summer 2024 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Summer 2024 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on March 31\, 2024. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager\, found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of July 2024\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:F - The Upper New Review Short Story Contest. Theme: A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in our 2024 Short Story Contest! \nThis is a short story fiction writing contest. \nThe short story contest is open to any English language writer anywhere on Earth\, aged 13 years or older. \nWe are open to receiving submissions of short stories originally written in a language other than English\, that have since been translated to English.  If this is the case\, the original non-English manuscript must be available for review upon request. \nThe Theme: Sense of Place \nThe theme for this short story contest is A Sense of Place. \nWe don’t want to provide too much structure to our theme.  We hope contest entrants will interpret this theme as they see fit\, expressing a keen sense of place within 3000 to 10000 words of fictional narrative. \nHowever: Our simple definition for sense of place is: figuring out the reality of where you are\, and how you perceive that reality\, and what your perception of that reality means to you. \nSubmissions \nWe’ll be using our Submittable platform to accept submissions for the short story contest. \nNo other forms of submission will be accepted. \nPrizes and Awards \nThe contest winner will receive a $200 cash prize. \nSeveral honorable mentions may be awarded to additional short story submissions. \nAdditionally\, three thematic prizes may be awarded in this short story contest\, depending on the quality of submissions\, at the discretion of The Upper New Review publisher.  These prizes include: \n\nDana Meadows Award – for demonstrated systems wisdom\nFritjof Capra Award – for demonstrated understanding of the hidden connections of the web of life\nGary Snyder Award – for demonstrated understanding of bioregionalism\n\nAll winners (the contest winner\, any honorable mentions\, and any thematic prize winners) will be published in The Upper New Review. \nRules and Guidelines \nThe entry fee to submit a single manuscript to the short story contest is $15. \nAll short stories entered into the contest will also be considered for publication in The Upper New Review\, regardless of the outcome of this contest. \nUploaded short story manuscripts should be properly formatted.  At a minimum\, manuscripts should be double-spaced\, using at least a 12-point serif font.  Please also include page numbers. \nSeveral standard file formats are acceptable for uploaded manuscripts.  PDF is preferred\, but not required. \nManuscripts do not need to be blinded for this contest.  This means that identifying information of the author should be included in the manuscript – this information does not need to be removed. \nThe minimum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 3\,000 words. \nThe maximum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 10\,000 words. \nAuthors may submit up to four total short stories for this contest.  Each short story entered requires a separate submission and $15 entry fee.  Additional submissions from a single author beyond the maximum allowed of four submissions will be automatically rejected. \nThe manuscript submission review process commences upon receipt of submission. \nManuscripts submitted early in the contest submission window may be accepted for publication before the end of the contest deadline.  Status for publication does not have any effect on the contest awards outcome. \nAll cash prizes may be awarded contingent upon the volume of submissions to the contest. Awards are subject to change based on these submission volumes\, including the potential for increase in awards. \nAll contest submissions are final.  The Upper New does not offer refunds for submissions\, except upon written request under extenuating circumstances. \nAdditional online events and curated publications may be announced for contest entries and winners\, contingent upon the number and quality of submissions to the contest.

SUMMARY:PF - Firewords Magazine Seeking Submissions. Theme: Adventure
DESCRIPTION:We accept any kind of genre and style and we aren’t averse to many subject matters. Our main stipulation is that the piece is engaging but anything intentionally offensive or distasteful is unlikely to be accepted. Full submission guidelines can be seen on our website. \n\n\n\n\n\nTheme:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIssue 17 will have a loose theme of Adventure. However\, we would recommend not taking the theme too literally. Remember\, it is not mandatory for all the writing to fit in with this theme – it is just a loose framework to give the issue an identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLength:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShort stories need to be under 2000 words. Shorter work is preferred as space is tight. We may consider longer entries if they are exceptional. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimultaneous submissions:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmitting work that is under consideration elsewhere is absolutely fine but we would appreciate being informed if it is picked up by another publication. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMultiple submissions:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmissions are currently limited per person up to the following: 1 x short story (under 2000 words)\, 1 x flash fiction (under 400 words) and 2 x poems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreviously published work:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn occasion\, we do reprint writing that has previously been published elsewhere but please include details of this when submitting. \n\n\n\n\n\nPayment:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFirewords is a small and independently run magazine. All profits go towards producing the following issue\, so unfortunately we cannot offer payment to our writers at this stage – though we do hope to do so as the publication grows. Each of our writers receives a complimentary digital copy of the issue they feature in\, free subscription to our new fortnightly Campfire emails for 6 months\, and a complimentary copy of any subsequent print edition that may arise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFormat:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs long as it’s legible and in a standard file format (e.g. .doc\, .docx) then the formatting isn’t too important. When naming your file\, please use the title of your piece. This makes life easier for us when dealing with a large number of documents.

SUMMARY:F - Hearth Stories Seeking Submissions of: Cozy Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:Hearth Stories publishes speculative fiction (fnatasy & science-fiction in our case) slice-of-life stories with a focus on connection\, family\, relationships\, comfort\, and the natural world (we love stories prominently featuring nature\, as opposed to tech). \nWe accept works from 1\,000 words up to 10\,000. However\, the ideal length may be something in the 1\,500-3\,500 word range. We do not currently accept poetry\, non-fiction\, or non-speculative work (there needs to be a fantasy or science fiction element present in the work). \nSome things we like: \n\nCozy\, sweet\, cute\, kind\, hopeful stories\nCaregiving\, parenting\, friendship\, romance\, and partnership stories\nRural/pastoral life and less technologically advanced settings\nWorks that take place in nature\nStories involving food and cooking. However\, we are vegan; stories that feature animal products may result in a pass on the story or a request for removal of the animal products\nStories involving hermits\, issolated places\, or wandering in the woods\nBonus points for stories backed by vegan\, anarchist\, eco-conscious\, and anti-capitalist themes (while still fitting the above)\n\nYou may notice that none of those things have anything to do with science fiction or fantasy. We would like speculative stories with the above themes and settings. We are very into slice of life stories\, the ruralism of Richard Jefferies (ruralism in general\, extending to so-called “cottagecore”)\, and stories in general that take place in wooded places. We like witches and magic\, new world stories (usually terraformed planets)\, alien worlds\, and the small adventures of daily life. We accept simultaneous submissions (but we do not accept multiple submissions at the same time\, unless specifically requested). \n\nPay scale\nAuthors deserve to be paid for their work\, even by a magazine that professes itself to be non-commercial. As such we offer 1¢ per word for accepted stories (with a minimum of $20 regardless of length). We would love to be able to offer more\, but we are not bringing in any money to offset the cost and the given amounts are what we\, as individuals\, can bear financially to support authors while continuing to release the magazine. \n\n\nHow to format your submission\nWe do not accept hard-copy manuscripts. As such\, you will be sending a digital file. Here are our preferences in that regard: \n\nPlease include\, at a minimum\, your e-mail address and the word count on the manuscript\nSend the file as: rtf\, doc\, docx\, odt\, or md\nUse any font and font size you like (we will adjust to our preferences anyway)\n\nWhere to send\nWrite to us at hearthstories@protonmail.com with the following: \n\nThe subject will follow this format: “HS Submission: [Story Name] [Word Count]”\nThe file\, formatted as described above\, will be attached to the e-mail (we do not accept links to files)\nThe e-mail body will include\, at a minimum\, the author’s name and a short author bio\nThe e-mail body will not include a synopsis of the story being submitted\n\nFailure to submit in the above format will result in your story being passed on unread. We regret having to institute a format like this\, but to combat a massive amount of spam we got during our last open reading period we want to know that folks at least took the time to look at these submission guidelines. If you have any trouble or you e-mailed and forgot to follow one of these items: reach out and let us know. We’re happy to work with you. Mostly we just want people to have read the guidelines. We value your time and want to read your work and appreciate you taking the time to submit to Hearth Stories.
