SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Twin Bill.  Theme: All-Star Game
DESCRIPTION:Submissions \nArtwork by Scott Bolohan\nSubmissions are open for our All-Star Game issue. \nFiction \nWe are interested in short stories up to roughly 5\,000 words. Anything we deem significantly over the word count will not be read out of respect for the number of submissions our editors receive. \nWe are looking for writing that displays a strong personal style and a connection to the game of baseball. Most of all\, we are excited by stories that situate baseball in a broader context\, beyond the action of an individual game or at-bat. The more surprising connection to baseball\, the better. There is a $25 honorarium per accepted story. \nCreative Nonfiction \nCreative Nonfiction at The Twin Bill is a place for true stories\, boldly told. We have no formal requirements or word count\, and we encourage experimentation in the name of contemporary storytelling. \nThat said\, we urge writers to consider their story carefully and to use not a word more than strictly necessary. \nThere is a $15 honorarium per accepted piece. \nPoetry \nPlease send up to five poems per issue. We love baseball from all eras\, but we would particularly like to see poems of a more contemporary style or subject matter. \nThere is a $10 honorarium per accepted poem. \nGuidelines \nWe are on Submittable. Please submit here. There is a $3 submission fee. Writers retain all rights to their work. We are only interested in previously unpublished work. DESCRIPTION:Issue 34 Submission Guidelines\nThe Broken City is currently accepting submissions for its summer 2024 edition: DIY. \nThat’s right\, readers\, it’s a Do It Yourself issue. No\, you don’t need to make the magazine for us—we want to hear about crafts\, construction\, repairs\, destruction\, recipes\, art and inventions (time machines included\, working or not). \nSend your poetry\, fiction\, essays\, illustrations and photography to thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com. \nDeadline is: June 1\, 2024. Submitters will be contacted after that date\, with news of acceptance or rejection. \n\nGeneral Submission Guidelines\n1. The Broken City will—at least briefly—consider any type of submission\, the most common being: poetry\, fiction\, essays\, comics\, illustrations\, photography\, music/book reviews. \n2. The Broken City is currently a non-paying publication. It is primarily a venue for new writers in search of exposure\, publishing credits and glory\, but does not discriminate against established submitters. \n3. The Broken City retains one-time publication rights to accepted submissions. Future rights to individual works published in The Broken City remain with the author. \n4. Written Submissions: Prose (fiction\, essay\, etc.) submissions must not exceed 3\,000 words. Poetry submissions should contain no more than five poems. \nText submissions should be attached to an e-mail as a document that has the extension .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt. Please\, no archaic or oddball extensions like .wpd. If there’s absolutely no way you can produce a .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt file\, paste your submission into the body of your e-mail. \nPlace your name at the top of the first page of the document. Also\, use a single\, common\, easy-to-read font for the entirety of the document—no Comic Sans or Lisboa Light. Fancy fonts do not make your submission look cool; they make it unreadable. \n5. Visual Submissions: Photos\, illustrations\, artwork\, etc. should be high-quality and in either .jpg\, .gif\, .png\, .bmp\, .pdf or .tif format. Multiple\, large files should be sent in multiple e-mails (maximum 10 MB per e-mail). Photo series are preferred but individual shots will be considered as well. \n6. Previously published work and simultaneous submissions are permitted. Please notify The Broken City if your work is accepted elsewhere after you submit. \n7. Accepted work will be edited to correct spelling\, grammar\, punctuation\, sentence structure and word use errors. The Broken City will consult authors before making changes that would significantly alter the content of a submission\, but it should be expected that minor revisions will be made unilaterally. Poetry will not be edited without consent\, except to replace frustratingly odd combinations of dashes with an em dash. \n8. After submitting\, add thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com to the contacts or safe-senders list of your e-mail account to ensure that future e-mails from The Broken City don’t end up in your spam folder. \n9. Poltergeists\, phantoms\, shades. They manifest in many shapes and dispositions in our lives and the literatures of all cultures. From the Egyptian to the Tibetan Book of the Dead\, from the Homeric epics to Shakespeare’s King Hamlet\, from the Victorian ghosts of Sheridan Le Fanu\, Violet Hunt\, and M. R. James to Amos Tutuola’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts\, from the ethereal creatures of Poe to the startlingly “realistic” ghosts of Henry James and Edith Wharton\, phantasmagoric beings mingle with the living. Nature itself may be “haunted”—an unknowable presence hostile to human intrusion\, as in Algernon Blackwood’s classic “The Willows.” Sometimes a ghostly haunting is metaphoric; often it is literal. The Japanese jorōgumo ghost appears as a beautiful maiden but is a lethal spider monster. Buddhism’s hungry ghosts have enormous stomachs and tiny mouths that represent how worldly desires blocked their path to nirvana.\n\n\nNote: If you miss the Submittable window\, we are also open for submissions by postal mail year-round. Please see below for instructions. \n  \nWHAT TO SUBMIT \nConjunctions publishes short- and long-form fiction\, poetry\, creative nonfiction\, and hybrid texts. We do not publish academic essays or book reviews. \nAll submissions must be in English and previously unpublished. We will consider works in translation for which the translator has secured the rights. \nAlthough we have no official restrictions regarding word count\, most of the manuscripts we select for publication are under eight thousand words long.
