DESCRIPTION:Fall Black Prize: Fragments of Time \nBlack Fox is accepting submissions for its Fall 2024 Black Fox Prize. The theme for this round is “Fragments of Time.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWhen we think of time\, we often think of a ticking clock. But time is more than merely seconds\, minutes\, hours\, or measurements. Time also has the power to shape our lives. It can be a fleeting moment\, a seemingly endless stretch\, or a loop. Time can be a guardian of memories\, the signal for change\, and the constant that connects us to the world around us. \nFor this contest\, we’re looking for writers to explore the intricacies of time: How does it mold us\, ruin us\, or set us free? Is time a friend or an enemy? Does time heal or wound? Whether it’s traveling through centuries\, racing against the clock\, or pausing in a single\, spectacular moment\, we want work that investigates the mysteries\, difficulties\, joy\, or wonder of time. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $325 and publication in the Winter 2025 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Winter 2025 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on December 1\, 2024. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager\, found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. DESCRIPTION:Issue 35 Submission Guidelines\nThe Broken City is currently accepting submissions for its winter 2024 edition: “Greetings\, Starfighter.” \nFor those who weren’t alive yet and/or watching movies in the mid 1980s\, that means the magazine is running a video game issue. We want to hear about anything game related\, from the C64 to the N64 and into the present. Esports! Tron! Minecraft! We dare you to write something interesting about Pong. \nSend your poetry\, fiction and essays to thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com. \nDeadline is: December 1\, 2024. Submitters will be contacted after that date\, with news of acceptance or rejection. \n\nGeneral Submission Guidelines\n1. The Broken City will—at least briefly—consider any type of submission\, the most common being: poetry\, fiction\, essays\, comics\, illustrations\, photography\, music/book reviews. \n2. The Broken City is currently a non-paying publication. It is primarily a venue for new writers in search of exposure\, publishing credits and glory\, but does not discriminate against established submitters. \n3. The Broken City retains one-time publication rights to accepted submissions. Future rights to individual works published in The Broken City remain with the author. \n4. Written Submissions: Prose (fiction\, essay\, etc.) submissions must not exceed 3\,000 words. Poetry submissions should contain no more than five poems. \nText submissions should be attached to an e-mail as a document that has the extension .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt. Please\, no archaic or oddball extensions like .wpd. If there’s absolutely no way you can produce a .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt file\, paste your submission into the body of your e-mail. \nPlace your name at the top of the first page of the document. Also\, use a single\, common\, easy-to-read font for the entirety of the document—no Comic Sans or Lisboa Light. Fancy fonts do not make your submission look cool; they make it unreadable. \n5. Previously published work and simultaneous submissions are permitted. Please notify The Broken City if your work is accepted elsewhere after you submit. \n6. Accepted work will be edited to correct spelling\, grammar\, punctuation\, sentence structure and word use errors. The Broken City will consult authors before making changes that would significantly alter the content of a submission\, but it should be expected that minor revisions will be made unilaterally. Poetry will not be edited without consent\, except to replace frustratingly odd combinations of dashes with an em dash. \n7. After submitting\, add thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com to the contacts or safe-senders list of your e-mail account to ensure that future e-mails from The Broken City don’t end up in your spam folder. \n8. With ourselves and with people we love. In January we’re looking for your stories about what you would have done if you were being honest with yourself. What you wish you had done or what you regret never having done. What is a truth about yourself that you’ve never yet shared? We are looking for your raw honest words\, even if they are harsh\, even if they paint you in a bad light. Even if they hurt. \n** HerStry is always happy to share stories anonymously—if your story is selected for publication\, simply let your editor know you would not like your name shared ** \nTHE RULES:  \n\nAll stories must be true and about you.\nStories must follow the theme in some way\, interpretations can be wide.\nStories must stay around 3\,000 words.\nDocuments should be double spaced\, 12Pt font with 1 inch margins and in an easy to read font. DESCRIPTION:theme: wild goose chase \nAre you pursuing an unattainable treasure or leading a horse down a winding road? Are the geese in the office park menacing you? Or are they protecting their goslings? Whether you’re a Mercutio who has lost a battle of wits or are racing toward a goal in V-formation\, send us prose and poems for Wild Goose Chase. Throw together some unwieldy words that refuse capture and submit the soft down of your tender moments to us. \nWe publish based on a rotating theme that lasts for three months. See below for the latest premise and the cutoff dates. We love surprising interpretations of our themes; we’re less keen on literal interpretations. That being said\, if we receive a piece that isn’t – in some way – reflective of the theme we’ll gnash our teeth and shake our fists at the heavens\, and then send you a wimpy rejection letter. Don’t make us do that – we hate that.  Length of the work: our sweet spot is between 150 to 300 words. Anything over or under\, we’ll be less psyched on. Poems? Let’s try to keep it under 25 lines\, bbz\, and no more than 3 poems per submission. We accept re-prints so long as you own the rights.
