DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2025 issue will be dedicated to poems about food. The poems may be any style or length\, but must be written about food in some way. We no longer publish essays\, but always include a contributor notes section\, where poets briefly discuss the relationship between food and poetry\, if there is one\, allowing for a wide array of perspectives to be shared. \nYou may submit up to four previously uncurated poems (or pages of short poems) at the same time\, either in a single file or up to four files. Do not include your name or contact info within the file content. Only make one submission (of up to four poems) to this category. We’ll reply a month or two after the deadline. \nRattle does not accept work that has been previously curated\, in print or online—poems may be self-published on social media\, blogs\, or message boards\, but cannot have been published in books\, magazines\, or similar collections open to the public. We want to be the first publisher to highlight the poems\, but never want to discourage anyone from sharing their poems themselves. For more on this\, read “Uncurated: The Case for a New Term of Art.” \nRattle does not accept work that has been predominantly generated by artificial intelligence. Poetry is a tool for expanding the human spirit\, which means poems should be written by humans. It is possible to use A.I. toward that aim in some cases\, so if used A.I. to assist in the writing process\, please explain in the notes to your submission. \nSimultaneous submissions are encouraged. If the work is accepted elsewhere\, just send a message through submission on Submittable to let us know. DESCRIPTION:Submissions for our March issue are now open. The theme is “Identity.” \n\n  \nSubmissions should be emailed to magazine@synkroniciti.com. Please place your name and the category of submission in the subject field of your e-mail. \nThe submission fee is $3. The categories of work we are seeking are outlined below\, along with submission guidelines for each category and a PayPal button to submit payment. You may submit more than one entry in one or more categories. We currently pay only artists winning the top prizes in our contests. We are working toward being able to pay sustainable honorariums to everyone. \nPending payment\, all submissions will receive a response shortly after our submission deadline. If your work is selected you will be asked for biographical information and we will work with you to make sure that your work is displayed in a way that makes you happy. Imagine a modern Prometheus who defies the gods not with fire\, but with a digital “spark”—perhaps a powerful AI or a code that breaks down barriers of control. Explore the risks\, costs\, and transformative effects of this new “fire” on humanity. How does society react? Is this modern gift a blessing or a curse? \n\n\nPandora’s Algorithm\nIn the myth\, Pandora opened a box that released chaos into the world. In a modern twist\, reimagine Pandora as a developer or engineer who unleashes an algorithm or app that\, once activated\, begins unraveling hidden truths or flaws in society. Describe how this technology spreads\, what “evils” it reveals\, and whether there’s any hope left at the bottom of this new “box.” \n\n\nNarcissus and the Selfie\nExplore the story of Narcissus through the lens of our current social media culture\, where self-image\, validation\, and identity are shaped online. What would happen if Narcissus were reimagined as an influencer whose obsession with digital self-perfection leads to unexpected consequences? How does his reflection change him\, and what happens when that reflection is shattered? \n\n\nPersephone and the Climate Crisis\nRecast Persephone’s descent into the Underworld as a metaphor for our relationship with nature and the climate. In this retelling\, Persephone is pulled between two worlds—one that thrives with life\, and another that suffers. What role does she play in the story of a changing planet? What might a “return” look like in the age of climate action? \n\n\nThe Odyssey of Displacement \n   Inspired by Odysseus’s journey\, write about a modern “odyssey” that mirrors the struggles of today’s refugees or displaced people. Your character might embark on an epic journey across digital landscapes\, corporate worlds\, or bureaucratic systems. How do they endure obstacles\, and what “home” do they hope to find at the end of their journey? \n\n\nIcarus and the Limits of Innovation \n   In the myth\, Icarus flew too close to the sun\, causing his wings to melt. Reframe this story in the context of a technological race—whether with space exploration\, AI\, or biotechnology—where someone pushes past the boundaries of ethical limits. What parallels can be drawn about ambition\, hubris\, and the cost of “flying high”? What could the modern “sun” look like? \n\n\nThe Sisyphus of Success \n   Sisyphus is cursed to push a boulder uphill\, only for it to roll back down every time. In today’s context\, imagine a modern “Sisyphus” facing the pressures of capitalism\, career advancement\, or the hustle culture. Each time they reach a “summit” of success\, a setback forces them to start again. What drives them to continue\, and what might breaking the cycle look like? \n\n\nThe Digital Labyrinth of Theseus \n   Set in a sprawling tech labyrinth controlled by a giant corporation\, this Theseus must navigate a maze of misinformation\, social media algorithms\, or cyber-threats. With the help of a “digital thread” given by a modern-day Ariadne\, Theseus seeks to defeat the metaphorical Minotaur at the heart of this system. What does he discover about himself—and society—along the way?

DESCRIPTION:FOR THE BIRDS\nIf there is one animal that has consistently shown up in the submissions to The Fourth River\, for at least the last ten years\, it would be the feathered\, winged ones that rule the skies. \nBirds. \nIn fact\, there have been so many birds bursting from poems\, stories and essays that it has become a bit of an inside joke and also a teaching opportunity for graduate student editors engaging with the genre we call Nature Writing in the 21st century. Okay\, birds\, I tell them. But how are these birds special? If we can expect them to arrive in flocks\, how can we spot the ones that stand out? \nOkay\, birds\, we say. \nBut they had better surprise us! \n2025 marks 20 years of publication for The Fourth River and in this anniversary year\, instead of looking at them slightly askance\, we’ve decided we want to embrace them! \nSo\, bring us your birds! Your bevies and coveys\, your murders and unkindnesses\, your nests. Your bowers and roosts\, your migration routes. Your claws and plumage\, hollow bones and elliptical wings. Bring us swoop and sail and alight and soar. \nBring us eggs. \nBring pet birds flying around your living room and owls hunting mice under the moon. Bring literature and myth and extinction. Bring ravens and mockingbirds. Griffin and Harpy and Phoenix and Thoth. Archaeopteryx. Bring Quetzalcoatlus. Dodo. Great Auk. \nBring us delicate hummingbirds\, sure. But also those small brown scrappy ones\, nondescript and muscled out by the Cardinal-bullies at the feeder outside your window. Bring us pigeon and chicken and the un-lovely buzzard. Remind us that cassowaries can’t\, but turkeys sure can\, fly. \nLet us hear their chirps and screeches. \nLet us hear them sing. \nFor our fall\, 2025 digital issue\, we welcome your poems\, essays and stories about birds. \nPlease send 3-5 poems or up to 4\,000 words of prose at a time. \n— \nWe welcome submissions of poetry\, fiction and creative nonfiction that explore the relationship between humans and their environments\, both natural and built\, urban\, rural or wild.
