SUMMARY:PFN - The Irenaut Seeking Submissions on: Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the release of our Autumn issue—where our contributors delve into the theme of Women and Peace—we’re thrilled to announce the focus of our next edition: Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace. \nIn a world grappling with environmental and social crises\, Indigenous knowledge systems\, rooted in harmony with nature and community\, offer invaluable perspectives. Despite centuries of marginalisation\, these ways of knowing hold profound truths and solutions urgently needed today. \nWe invite writers\, poets\, scholars\, journalists\, thinkers\, and artists of all disciplines to share their insights and creativity on this vital topic. Let’s honour and amplify these voices as we envision a more peaceful\, sustainable future together. \nHow to make a submission: \nWhile Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace is the special focus of the Spring issue\, submissions on other topics will be considered on their own merits. The closing date for submitting a summary (up to 300 words) is 31st March 2025 and your full contribution should reach us by 30th April 2025. Please address any queries to Mark-Alec or Nick at info@theirenaut.com.

SUMMARY:PFN - Riddle Fence: A Journal of Arts & Culture Themed Call: Knots\, Nets\, and Ties That Bind
DESCRIPTION:ISSUE 55 THEMED CALL:\nKnots\, Nets\, and Ties That Bind\n\nHow do you share what’s most important? How do you keep it safe? How do you keep it alive? \n\n\nWe’re looking for your most ambitious\, imaginative writing on any touchpoint within this theme\, whether it’s the childhood games you played\, the songs you can’t leave behind\, the seeds you plant in the daylight\, or the secrets you whisper in the dark. \n\n\nALL submissions are accepted through our Submittable portal only. \nWe only accept previously unpublished work; Riddle Fence contributors may appear in the magazine once per calendar year. At this time\, we do not accept work that is written\, co-written\, or assisted by AI. \nRiddle Fence licenses first serial rights (copyright remains with the author) and pays $50 per published page. \nA FEW OTHER GUIDELINES: \nMake sure your name and the title appear on every page of your submission.\nRiddle Fence accepts simultaneous submissions\, but you MUST inform us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere \nIN YOUR COVER LETTER: \nPlease include the title of your story\, a word count\, and a brief biographical statement. \nPlease only submit one story during each free submission window.  \nFor fiction: We are interested in the stories that best represent your literary voice.  We appreciate sharp prose\, well constructed stories\, and bold writing. \nPlease be sure to submit a .doc or .docx file. Submissions should be double-spaced and in 12-point font.  Our suggested maximum word count is 3\,000 words. \nFor creative non-fiction: Please submit your work as a .doc or .docx file. All other formats will be rejected. Double-space. Make sure your name\, title\, and word count appear on every page of your submission. \nWe’re seeking work with a taut narrative drive\, emotional resonance\, and thoughtful explorations that grapple with a theme. The grappling is key. Tension is non-negotiable\, as is strong prose. \nShorter essays are more likely to be published. Our suggested maximum word count is 3\,000 words. Occasionally a complex and brilliant piece will demand more words but that is extremely rare. \nFor poetry: All poems in a single submission should be included in a single document. Poetry submissions may be single-spaced. Please submit no more than 10 pages per submission (3 to 5 poems is best). No more than one poem on a page. \nBe patient. We receive many submissions and read them all with care. It may take up to 6 months for a response.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Magma Poetry 93. Theme: Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: Magma 93\nClosing date: 31st March\, 2025\n\n\nWe welcome poems that have not been previously published\, either in print or online. \nPoems may be sent online via Submittable\, or by post if you live in the UK or Ireland. \nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please withdraw your submission or contact us if it is accepted for publication somewhere else first. \nEditors Isabelle Baafi\, Sohini Basak and Tim Tim Cheng are excited to invite submissions for Magma 93: The Liberation Issue. The issue will explore personal and political forms of liberation: liberation as protest and emancipation; as authenticity and self-actualisation; as holding on or letting go; as moving past\, moving through\, moving towards. \nWe encourage you to imagine as widely as possible\, and to write with honesty and abandon. What does ‘liberation’ mean to you? What does it look like? How do we know when we have it? Are we ever truly free? \nSubmissions may respond to one or several of the current humanitarian crises happening around the world: the structures of domination that terrorise populations in occupied regions\, and/or the forms of disenfranchisement oppressing communities worldwide. \n—-Don’t believe our outlines\, forget them\n—-and begin from your own words.\n—-As if you are the first to write poetry\n—-or the last poet.\n——— from ‘To a Young Poet’ by Mahmoud Darwish\, translated by Fady Joudah \nPoems may draw inspiration from historical liberation movements – the protests\, rebellions\, revolutions – or the ideas that underpinned them\, the people who made them possible. \nEqually\, you may choose to focus on the more personal\, quotidian forms of freedom that have marked your life: the euphoric all-clear\, the overdue goodbye\, the bittersweet departure\, the hard-won recovery\, the long-awaited release: \n—-Of lockdown\, hunger time & the blackened flower —\n—-Ain’t nothing worth knowing. Prison becomes home;\n—-The cell: a catacomb that cages and the metronome\n—-Tracking the years that eclipse you.\n——— from ‘House of Unending’ by Reginald Dwayne Betts \n…Or even the objects\, people and communities who have represented liberation to you. What forms of freedom are underrated or overlooked? \n—-Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything\nelse in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance.\n——— Susan B. Anthony \nWhose liberation should we support? How can we help to make it a reality? What does it mean to be a liberator? \nWe invite work that interrogates how liberation happens: how it is envisioned and eroded\, how it manifests and spreads through sociopolitical echelons\, phases of life\, changing environments\, shifting ideologies. And how does one person’s liberation affect others? \n—-Liberation is thus a childbirth\, and a painful one. The man or woman who emerges is a new person\, viable only as the oppressor-oppressed contradiction is superseded by the humanization of all people.\n——— Paulo Freire\, translated by Myra Bergman Ramos \nOn the other hand\, feel free to veer wildly if you like\, choosing instead to write poems that reflect on how difficult liberation can be to achieve\, how elusive it may be\, despite its significance: \n—-My father taught me wherever you are\, always be looking for a way out: this\n—-opening or that one. Or a question. Sharp enough to slice a hole for you to slip\n—-through.\n——— from ‘Zuihitsu’ by Jenny Xie \nWe welcome poems that examine what it means to be trapped\, detained\, repressed. How do we bear it when liberation seems impossible? \n—-Spring broke out but my soul did not.\n—-It kept to sleet and inwards fog.\n—-Forget-me-nots around the path\,\n—-a speckled thrush; I spoke rarely\n—-and had a sour mouth. I couldn’t make love.\n——— from ‘Fly’ by Fiona Benson \nDon’t feel like you have to use the word ‘liberation’\, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box: what is the price of freedom? Who pays it? \n—-the children of haiti\n—-are not mythological\n—-we are starving\n—-or eating salty cakes\n—-made of clay \n—-because in 1804 we felled\n—-our former slave captors\n—-the graceless losers sunk\n—-vindictive yellow\n—-teeth into our forests\n——— from ‘mud mothers’ by Lenelle Moïse \nAnd once we are free\, what then? What do we do with the remnants of our struggle\, or our former selves? What does it mean to be free in the face of memory? What does moving forward look like? \n—-Return in thought to the concert where music flared.\n—-You gathered acorns in the park in autumn\n—-and leaves eddied over the earth’s scars.\n—-Praise the mutilated world\n—-and the gray feather a thrush lost\,\n—-and the gentle light that strays and vanishes\n—-and returns.\n——— from ‘Try to Praise the Mutilated World’ by Adam Zagajewski \nPoems may draw from various genres\, appear in unexpected ways\, or utilise traditional forms – or all of the above\, or none of them. But ultimately\, they should release you from your own predetermined limits. We are interested in the apparent\, necessary concepts of liberation\, but equally we welcome submissions that push the boundaries of what liberation means and how we understand it. \nSurprise us\, incite us\, enlighten us. We can’t wait to read what you send. \nHOW TO SUBMIT \n\nThe submissions window for ‘Ownership’ is open 1st – 31st March 2025\nWe welcome poems that have not been previously published in print\, online\, or broadcast.\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please withdraw your submission or contact us if it is accepted for publication somewhere else first.\nYou may submit up to 4 previously unpublished poems: ONLINE via Submittable in a single Word or PDF document\, OR BY POST to Magma 93 Submissions\, 23 Pine Walk\, Carshalton\, SM5 4ES. Postal submissions are accepted from the UK and Ireland only. Postal submissions are not acknowledged until a decision is made.
