SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Bi Women Quarterly. Theme: Aging
DESCRIPTION:Fall 2025: aging\n\n\n\n\nSomething we all have in common: getting older. How are you experiencing the phases of your life? What’s going on with your body\, mind\, spirit\, and your feelings/expectations about relationships and/or sexuality? Do you have a bi+ bucket list? People of all ages—and especially older bi+ folks—are invited to submit work. \nBWQ features the voices of women with bi+ sexualities (i.e.\, bi\, pan\, fluid\, and other non-binary sexualities). We see “woman” as a broad category with space for an array of gender identities and expressions. We welcome contributions from bi+ women who identify as trans\, non-binary\, cis\, and beyond. \nEvery issue has a theme. While we will consider all submissions\, content related to the theme are prioritized. \nWe welcome essays\, poetry\, news articles about current issues and events related to bi+ topics\, creative writing\, musings\, and more. \nPlease submit your words in a word document (.doc\, docx or .rtf). Use single spacing\, 11 pt font in Adobe Garamond Pro (or closest available font). Please do not send pdfs. Different spacing and formatting is okay if submitting poetry but please use Adobe Garamond Pro (11pt)\, if possible. SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs Seeking Submissions for their 20th Anniversary Edition on the Theme: Muse
DESCRIPTION:GENERAL GUIDELINES \n\nWe are looking for serious writers with an appreciation for language and the craft of writing. We want fiction with memorable characters and realistic plots\, poetry that is fresh and original\, and nonfiction that is both thoughtful and entertaining.\nWe will accept only writing that has been proofread for spelling and grammar. Trust us on this one. We keep our virtual machete very sharp for people who are grammatically challenged\, and we are not afraid to use it.\nHaving said that\, as an international ‘zine\, we accept differences in spelling usages (e.g. British vs American English) and will publish whatever is considered correct in an author’s home country.\nWe are not interested in explicit sexual content\, gratuitous violence\, or repetitive swearing\, unless it is essential to the plot and not included solely for shock value.\nPlease do not send us any of the following: poetry that sounds like it ought to be on a Hallmark card\, poetry you copied from a Hallmark card\, how-to articles\, first drafts of anything\, fanfiction\, anything full of sentimentality\, or religious and/or political propaganda disguised as fiction.\nThis ought to be obvious\, but only send us your own work\, humans. If you send us anything plagiarized or written by a robot\, remember we have a machete.\nWe do not accept previously published work. This includes not only formal publications in print and online journals\, but any pieces you may have posted to a blog\, personal website\, etc. If it’s already available to the public in some form\, we do not accept it.\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted by another journal.\nAs above\, we do not consider or accept submissions outside the specified submission period.\nWe reserve the right to make minor editorial changes without consultation\, where there are unintentional errors or inconsistencies in punctuation\, spelling or grammar. We will consult authors about anything more substantive.\nThe editors are all responsive to shameless flattery and to gifts of chocolate.\n\nPoetry Guidelines \nWe accept poetry of roughly 500 words or less\, although we are not terribly strict about this guideline.  We are rarely willing to be lenient with the theme when it comes to poetry\, and will do so only if the submission is very good. \nPlease note that we only accept three poems at any one time from a single author and\, for the most part\, publish only one poem from any one author per edition. \nFiction Guidelines \nWe accept fiction of roughly 5\,000 words or less related to the theme of the issue.   The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar/spelling\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \nPlease submit only one piece of fiction at a time\, and ensure stories are formatted as requested below. \nNonfiction Guidelines \nWe accept creative nonfiction of 3\,000 words or less. Halfway Down the Stairs is specifically looking for essays and memoir with a strong voice and a unique point of view. We publish well-written\, honest writing that inspires emotion. Humor is also appreciated. \nWe are not looking for stream of consciousness rants of a political or religious nature. Save those for your blog. We respond negatively to spelling and grammatical errors\, so please proofread your work closely if you wish to have it seriously considered. \nAs of 2018 we began accepting nonfiction submissions outside of the issue theme.  Submissions within the theme are still encouraged\, but high quality submissions outside the theme will also be considered for publication. Please note this only applies to nonfiction submissions. \nPlease submit only one piece of nonfiction at a time. \nSUBMISSIONS PROCESS\n \n\nPlease send all writing submissions to halfway . stairs @ gmail . com.\nDO NOT send your work as an attachment. (More details on why under point 5 below.)\nYour subject line should look like this: submission\, genre\, and title of your piece.  (Example: “Submission\, Fiction\, Monsoon Nights.”)  If you are submitting multiple poems\, state the number of poetry submissions instead of the title of the piece. (Example:  “Submission\, Three Poems by William C. Fredrikson.”) Please do not submit multiple genres in a single e-mail; if you would like to submit poetry and fiction\, send us two separate e-mails.\nWithin the body of your e-mail\, give us the following information: the title(s) of your submission(s)\, the name under which you wish to be published\, your e-mail address\, if the piece you are submitting has ever been published elsewhere\, if the piece you are submitting is a simultaneous submission\, and a brief introduction written in the 3rd person point of view.  If you are submitting multiple poems\, include these statements at the beginning of your e-mail\, and follow it with the actual poems. Example:\n\nThree Poems \nby William C. Fredrikson. \ncrazywillie57@gmail.com. \nNo\, the submitted poems have never published elsewhere. \nMonsoon Nights is not a simultaneous submission.  Elsewhere and Lady Luck are both simultaneous submissions.William C. Fredrikson teaches grade seven social studies in British Columbia.   His students think he looks exactly like Jack Nicholson.  In his spare time\, William enjoys playing the guitar\, reading Hemingway\, studying World War II history\, and making fun of reality television. \n\nIf we do choose to publish your piece\, we will also publish your biography. Your e-mail address is confidential\, and we will never publish it or give it out.\nAfter your introduction\, please post your piece within the body of your e-mail.  Please do not send your work as an attachment.  Please single space your work\, double spacing between paragraphs.  Please do not indent your paragraphs.\nProvide a content warning if it’s warranted: Let us know upfront if there is some kind of explicit content in your submission which we should be warned about in advance. We’ll leave this up to your discretion\, but examples could include abuse\, neglect\, self harm\, or violence.\nOptional: Let us know how you found us.  We’re curious as to where our readers and writers are coming from.\nOptional: Let us know if there’s a kind of image you visualize with your piece\, or even if you have an image you would like us to use if it is published (guidelines below). We reserve the right to choose alternatives – but we are happy to consider your suggestions.\n\nWe aim to respond to all submissions within 4-8 weeks of receipt\, and you will never wait more than three months for a response.

SUMMARY:PFN - About Place Journal Invites Submissions for Volume VIII\, Issue IV\, “On Freedom.”
DESCRIPTION:All around us\, we see and hear calls for freedom from many different voices and different directions. Some of these calls are frightening; some are inspiring. How are we to understand this “freedom” moment? We seek poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and hybrid works that question\, reimagine\, and embody what freedom and unfreedom mean in our complex world. \nWe’re looking for work that explores freedom’s multidimensional nature—what historian Timothy Snyder distinguishes as negative freedom and positive freedom. Negative freedom is “freedom from” (oppression\, constraint\, violence)\, while positive freedom is “freedom to” (create\, speak\, love\, flourish). \nWe’re also interested in work that engages freedom as a process. Freedom requires cultivating “habits of freedom” (Snyder)—daily practices that sustain and expand our capacity for liberty. Author Maggie Nelson also understands freedom not as a fixed state but as an ongoing practice. \nWe view the act of creation itself as a habit or practice of freedom—a claiming of voice and space. We invite submissions that not only speak about freedom but express it through formal innovation\, boundary-crossing\, and aesthetic risk-taking. \nWe welcome explorations of what philosopher Hannah Arendt called “inwardness as a place of absolute freedom” as well as work that maps the external territories of political and social freedom. We’re interested in how art can articulate author bell hooks’ idea that “awareness is central to the process of love as the practice of freedom.” \nWe invite you to join us in the radical act of creative freedom\, to challenge constraint and to imagine liberation in both bold and quiet ways. \nAll submissions should be previously unpublished and should engage with the theme of freedom in thoughtful and nuanced ways. We welcome work in various forms and styles\, from traditional to experimental. \nWork must be submitted via Submittable by August 1\, 2025. \nAbout Place Journal is committed to amplifying diverse voices and perspectives. We especially encourage submissions from writers and artists of historically marginalized communities whose experiences and insights on freedom may challenge dominant narratives and expand our collective understanding. \nAbout Place Journal Submission Guidelines\nWork can include: \n\nPoetry: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 50 lines each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf. If your poetry submission contains special formatting\, we suggest submitting a PDF in addition to your Word doc.\nFiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction and other prose: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 4000 words each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf.\nThe total number of submitted pieces cannot exceed 5\, even if your submission includes items from several genre categories.\n\nPlease provide a numbered list with the title of each work you are submitting (1 to 5 works) in the field of the Submittable form where indicated. \nEach submission must be accompanied by a bio in doc\, docx or rtf format. Bios must be in the third person and not exceed 150 words. If you want your website\, Twitter\, and/or Instagram links included with your bio\, please include that information in the Submittable form. \nBy submitting\, you guarantee you hold the rights to the work\, and you grant About Place Journal the rights to publish the submitted work with first serial rights (FNASR). After publication\, rights revert to the author. Original\, previously unpublished work only. All pieces must be submitted through Submittable.

SUMMARY:PF - ette Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme "Roulette"
DESCRIPTION:ON ROULETTE: \nGames of chance\, fate\, the unknown. We’re interested in reversals of fortune\, luck\, the house. We like the glamor of old films and the lucky charm. Or consider roulette as a small wheel\, an engraver’s tool\, a stamp device. We are not interested in Russian roulette (thanks)\, but all else goes. Spin the wheel of your imagination and send us your best work. \n\nEtymology \nroulette (n.) \n“game of chance involving a revolving disk on a table\,” 1745; earlier “small wheel” (1734)\, from French roulette “gambling game played with a revolving wheel\,” an extended sense; “small wheel\,” from Old French roelete “little wheel” (12c.)\, formed on model of Late Latin rotella\, diminutive of Latin rota “wheel” (see rotary). An older name for this game was roly-poly or rouly-pouly (1712).(http://www.etymonline.com/word/roulette) \nDefinition \nroulette \nnoun \n\na game of chance played at a table marked off with numbers from 1 to 36\, one or two zeros\, and several other sections affording the players a variety of betting opportunities\, and having in the center a revolving\, dish like device roulette wheel into which a small ball is spun to come to rest finally in one of the 37 or 38 compartments\, indicating the winning number and its characteristics\, as odd or even\, red or black\, and between 1 and 18 or 19 and 36.\na small wheel\, especially one with sharp teeth\, mounted in a handle\, for making lines of marks\, dots\, or perforations:engravers’ roulettes; a roulette for perforating sheets of postage stamps.\nPhilately. a row of short cuts\, in which no paper is removed\, made between individual stamps to permit their ready separation. (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/roulette)\n\n\nSome History \nIn 1655\, the first\, crude version of the roulette wheel was created by the French mathematician and inventor\, Blaise Pascal\, in his quest to create a perpetual motion machine—or a machine\, that once started\, could not be stopped\, and would run on its own mechanism. Others added to the invention\, turning it into the classic rouge et noir casino game.
