SUMMARY:F - Sydney Hammond Memorial Short Story Writing Competition. Theme: "Detour/s"
DESCRIPTION:Competition Details:\n2023 Theme: Detour/s \n \n\nFirst prize $250AU Hawkeye Publishing Gift Voucher + anthology cover based on the winner’s story.\nShort-Listed and Long-Listed announced.\nTOP 40 published in an anthology – free copy to all published entrants. \n(Sponsorship Opportunities Available – Contact Carolyn) \nCloses 6PM Monday 1st August 2023 \nMaximum 1\,000 words  \nTheme: Detour/s \n$15AU entry \nWe’re looking for stories with powerful beginnings\, rising tension\, and a climax that resonates\, to the theme of DETOUR. Short stories about alternative routes\, roads less travelled\, unexpected journeys\, that examine lessoned learned\, cautionary tales\, surprising endings\, friends made along the way. Play with unconventional storytelling\, or tell a story that plays with ‘epic journey’ tropes. What obstacles can keep your characters from reaching their goals? Have they reached their ending yet? Has something lead to a possibility they would have never otherwise imagined? \nSometimes the way forward isn’t simple\, and often it’s these detours through life that make for compelling\, hopeful\, significant\, surprising\, or comical stories – stories that linger on characterisation\, resilience\, unorthodox experiences\, and new ways of looking at the world. That stick with us after the last sentence is done. \nJudges are looking for the following: \n\nWriting ability: correct tense\, point of view\, minimal redundant words and adverbs\, show not tell.\nStory arc: rising tension\, climax\, resolution.\nAdherence to the competition theme.\nSpelling & Grammar.\nLayout conforms to the competition guidelines.\n\nRead this feature from the 2020 competition for notes from the judges on what made the published 40 stand out from the field. \nWant an insight into the types of stories that win first prize and get published in our anthology? \nThen grab a copy of the 2021 Anthology\, Jump and find out. Details here. \nPrize Pool : \n\nWinner: $250AU Hawkeye Gift Voucher + Anthology front cover design based on winner’s story.\nShortlisted (2nd – 4th placed) names published.\nTop 40 stories will be published in an anthology. SUMMARY:N - The Letter Review Prize for Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction’s popularity is soaring due to the ever increasing demands of voracious readers who are hungry for content which is highly relevant to their interests. There’s never been a better time to be a nonfiction author\, or a more exciting time to publish nonfiction. Letter Review connects writers with the vast number of people in search of fresh nonfiction content. \nNonfiction is a broad category: we’ve all been enchanted by the spell of a compelling piece of nonfiction in one of its many evolving forms. The Letter Review Prize welcomes all forms of nonfiction including: Memoir\, journalism\, essay (including personal essay)\, fictocriticism\, creative nonfiction\, travel\, nature\, opinion\, and many other permutations. \nAny and all works which convey information about the real world are welcome. Nonfiction may inform\, it may persuade\, explore\, or divulge. It takes the shape of both anecdote and empirical observation. The inclusion of information which the author knows to be untrue or fictional is discouraged in this genre: but subjective conclusions are certainly encouraged. \nNonfiction competitions represent a wonderful opportunity for emerging writers to demonstrate their ability and secure publication. They also offer established writers an exciting arena in which to showcase new work and build their reputations. \nLetter Review believes in the power of literature\, and in the importance and magic of new writing. \nThe top three winning entries are declared the Winners\, and share equally in the Prize pool of $1000 USD. Each Winner’s entry is published\, accompanied by its own attractive original commissioned artwork. SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contest Theme: "Art of Deception"
DESCRIPTION:August 2023 Fox Tales Contest: Art of Deception\n\n\nFor the month of August 2023\, Black Fox is accepting contest submissions for our Fox Tales series. The theme for August is “Art of Deception.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nOur Fox Tales contests are month-long mini contests that run between our two main contests. They allow us to publish more writers and creative work outside of our usual biannual issues! \nFox Tales will be published as “mini books” on our Instagram account and website! Instagram carousels remind us of turning book pages\, and we thought it would be fun to transform carousels into mini books! We will design carousel pages for the winning stories and poetry. Writers should keep in mind word counts. We are not opposed to longer stories and will consider them\, but be aware shorter stories tend to resonate better with us for this project. We suggest keeping submissions around 500-2\,000 words. Poets may submit 3-8 poems. If a work is too long for 8 Instagram squares\, we will break it up into several parts. \nDo you have characters who are living in a realm of deceit or spinning webs of lies? We want to read about them for our August Fox Tales Contest! We’re looking for work that challenges perceptions\, showcases characters caught in a labyrinth of lies\, and/or leaves readers stuck in a gray area. Show us truth camouflaged by falsehoods\, the blurred line between fact and fiction\, or the entanglement of half-truths and illusions. Whether you submit a short story\, poem\, or creative nonfiction piece\, we want to explore complex emotions. Will the result be redemption or ruin? \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose 1-3 winners. The prize is $100 and publication as an Instagram carousel mini book and on our website as part of our Fox Tales series. Winners will also receive a Black Fox Writer Pack which contains writerly items from our sister company Writer’s Atelier and more. In each pack: \n\nOne back issue of Black Fox Literary Magazine\nA one-year digital subscription to Poets & Writers\nA copy of The Write Gym Workbook by Racquel Henry\nLittle Book of Writing Affirmations by Racquel Henry\nWriting Stickers\nA “Just F***ing Write” Pencil\nA “Get the Book Done” Tote Bag\nSticky notes\n\nThe contest entry fee is $9 and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on August 31\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be between 500-2\,000 words. For poetry\, send 3-8 poems in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of October\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!
