SUMMARY:P - Prairie Schooner Raz-Shumaker Book Prize Contest
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Prairie Schooner Raz-Shumaker Book Prize Contest opens to submissions on January 15\, 2022\, and will remain open until March 15\, 2022. \nPrizes \nWinners will receive $3000 and publication through the University of Nebraska Press. \nEligibility \nThe Prairie Schooner Raz-Shumaker Book Prize Series welcomes manuscripts from all living writers\, including non-US citizens\, writing in English. Both unpublished and published writers are welcome to submit manuscripts. We will not consider manuscripts that have previously been published\, which includes self-publication.  Manuscripts may contain stories or poems that have been published in journals or in chapbook form; however\, if the full-length manuscript includes work from a previously published chapbook\, the majority of the manuscript must be additional work not appearing in the chapbook.  Writers may enter both contests. Simultaneous submissions are accepted\, but we ask that you notify us immediately if your manuscript is accepted for publication somewhere else. No past or present paid employee of Prairie Schooner or the University of Nebraska Press or current faculty or student at the University of Nebraska will be eligible for the prizes. \nFees \nA $25.00 reading fee must accompany each submission. Submittable supports multiple currency options. Multiple submissions are welcome\, with separate fees. \nFor more guidelines\, please select your genre category below. \nYou may also visit our website here: http://prairieschooner.unl.edu/book-prize for more info. \nFor additional questions not answered within the guidelines\, e-mail Jamaica Baldwin\, Book Prize Coordinator\, at psbookprize@unl.edu. Please note we may not be able to respond to questions already addressed within the guidelines. \nContest Code of Ethics \nPrairie Schooner\, as a member of the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses\, subscribes to this code of ethics for our annual book series competition: CLMP’s community of independent literary publishers believes that ethical contests serve our shared goal: to connect writers and readers by publishing exceptional writing. We believe that intent to act ethically\, clarity of guidelines\, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end\, we agree 1) to conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers\, judges\, or editors; 2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines—defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and 3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This code recognizes that different contest models produce different results\, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage.

SUMMARY:P - Submissions for the 2022 Airlie Prize are now open!
DESCRIPTION:Submissions for the 2022 the Airlie Prize will be open January 1st through March 15th\, 2022 to all poets writing in English\, regardless of place of residence. The winner will be notified in the fall following the submission and will receive a $1000 cash award upon publication of the book in September of the next year. The initial print run is 500 copies. \nAt Airlie Press\, our vision and mission are to publish books of poetry that are compelling\, innovative\, and representative of diverse voices. To that end\, submissions to the Airlie Prize will no longer be read anonymously. As a press\, we commit to participating in the ongoing conversation and practice regarding inclusion and equity. We encourage submissions from underrepresented voices and poets from marginalized communities. \nIn the interest of transparency\, we’d like to share our selection process. All manuscripts will be read by two Airlie Press editors (either past or present) and previous Airlie Prize winners. Each reader will choose 2-3 manuscripts to advance to the second round. Our main criteria in reviewing manuscripts is the quality of the work. All current editors will then read the manuscripts that have advanced to the second round\, and each will choose their top two selections. From that group of finalists\, the prize winner is chosen by consensus among all current editors. If you have submitted to the Airlie Prize before\, we encourage you to try again\, as the judging team of Airlie Press editors varies from year to year. \nPoets previously published or contracted to be published by Airlie Press are ineligible to enter this contest\, as are members of the Airlie advisory board. In the case that an entry to the contest is made by a close connection (friend\, relative\, student\, or former student) of one of the Airlie Prize readers\, that reader will recuse themselves from the review of that manuscript in the first round. Manuscripts that advance to the final round will be read by all current editors\, regardless of connection\, and a winner will be chosen by consensus. For the purposes of this contest\, we also define “close connection” as anyone with whom a reader has direct correspondence (either written or verbal) once a month or more. As poetry is a relatively small community\, we believe a passing acquaintance with one of the readers does not necessitate a recusal. \nSubmissions are accepted via Submittable during the submission period. Entry fee: $25 ($33 if you would like to receive a copy of the winning book; $38 for those residing outside the US wishing to receive the book). \nManuscript Guidelines: \n1.      Manuscripts should be 48 to 90 pages of original poetry in English (excluding front matter and end matter). No more than one poem should appear on a page. \n2.      Please be sure manuscript pages are numbered. \n3.      Please include a table of contents. \n4.      Please use a standard\, easy-to-read font such as Times New Roman in twelve-point size. \n5.      Poems included in the submission may have appeared previously in magazines or anthologies but may not have been previously published in a book-length collection of the author’s own work. \n6.      Authors may submit more than one manuscript as long as no material is duplicated between submissions. Each submission requires a separate entry fee. \n7.      This contest is limited to single-author submissions. Translations are not eligible. \n8.      We accept simultaneous submissions\, but ask that you notify us and withdraw your manuscript from Submittable if it is accepted by another publisher. Entry fees are nonrefundable. \n9.    The contest winner will participate in the judging for the Airlie Prize in the year following their book’s publication.

SUMMARY:N - CBC Nonfiction Prize
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction (up to 2\,000 words)* \n\nThe Nonfiction Prize includes memoir\, biography\, humour writing\, essay (including personal essay)\, travel writing\, and feature articles. While the events must be real and the facts true\, creative nonfiction conveys your message through the use of literary techniques such as characterization\, plot\, setting\, dialogue\, narrative and personal reflection. The work should be accessible to a general reading audience (i.e.\, not written for a specialized or academic audience).\n\nCompetition opens: January 1\, 2022 \nDeadline: February 28\, 2022 \n*(Word count includes all words contained in the work including but not limited to titles\, footnotes\, introductions\, etc. Submissions over the specified word count will be disqualified.) \nOur word limits are strict in each category. To calculate word counts\, we put your entire submission (including the title) into Microsoft Word and use Word’s word counter. Since Word only relies on spaces to delimit words\, any term containing a hyphen (“twenty-five”) or an apostrophe (“can’t”\, “don’t”) counts as a single word. Word also counts every article (“the”\, “a”\, etc.) as a separate word. Microsoft Word also automatically counts groups of characters (e.g. “xxx”) as well as symbols (e.g. “***” or “~~~”) as a word. \nParticipants may submit as many texts as they wish in one or all categories. A writer can win only one prize per category. SUMMARY:F - Clash of the Query Letters Contest
DESCRIPTION:In the fiction world\, a query letter alone is not enough to land representation. The manuscript’s first sentence\, first paragraph\, and first page are the crucial test. However\, a query letter acts as a writer’s resume or c/v. It sets the tone\, lays out the book’s market potential\, and introduces the human behind the words and ideas. And of course\, it also pitches the story itself. While an ideal query letter may not seal the deal\, it will fill literary agents with eager excitement—a most helpful frame of mind for them to be in as they turn to your sample pages.\n\nOur judge\, Michelle Barker\, will be asking herself one question:\ndoes this query letter convince me that I’m in the hands of an adept \nnovelist with a unique and engaging story to tell?\n\nFirst place: $700 CAD\n\nSecond place: $200 CAD\nThird place: $100 CAD\n\nAll three finalists will be published on the Chopping Blog and receive\ncomplimentary access to a Darling Axe self-paced course. \nTHE FINER POINTS\n• Entry is $5 CAD \n• Optional feedback for $20 CAD\n• One page: maximum 500 words\n• Original\, unpublished\, unrepresented work only\n• Once you’ve paid\, send your docx/pdf to contest@darlingaxe.com\n• Submission deadline: January 31

SUMMARY:P - 2021 Goldstein Poetry Prize
DESCRIPTION:Please submit up to 5 previously unpublished poems with a total page count of no more than 10 pages. Poets at all stages of their careers are encouraged to submit. Multiple submissions are permitted with multiple fees.  Simultaneous submissions are acceptable but please leave us a note to withdraw individual poems if they are accepted elsewhere. All submissions will be considered for publication. This year’s final judge will be Sumita Chakraborty. The prize is now $1\,000 and publication in an upcoming issue of the journal. \nGoldstein Prize Guidelines \n1.    We accept submissions via Submittable and use its tools to ensure that all identifying information is hidden from our contest readers throughout the selection process. \n2.    We ask entrants not to include their names or contact information within the document they upload to Submittable\, its title\, or its file name. \n3.   Up to 20 submissions will be passed on\, without identifying information within them\, to the judge. \n4.   Close friends\, relatives\, students\, and former students of the judge\, are excluded from the contest. Likewise\, the current Editorial Board and staff of MQR\, as well as their immediate family members\, are excluded from the contest. Graduates of the Helen Zell Writers Program in the last 3 years and current faculty and staff of that program are also excluded.  If any of the selected authors fall under these categories they will be disqualified\, and a replacement will be chosen from among the finalists. \nWe feel acquaintance and/or participation in a workshop (outside of semester-long academic settings) taught by the judge should not be a disqualifying factor\, so long as none of the poems in a manuscript is recognizable to the judge. \nFor the purposes of this contest\, we’ll call a “close friend” anyone with whom we have regular direct correspondence. And please remember that if a poem is recognizable to the judge\, it will be disqualified.
