SUMMARY:P - The 2025 Hurt & Healing Prize. Theme: Hurt & Healing
DESCRIPTION:Healing begins when someone bears witness. I saw you. I believe you. \nAs poets\, we begin our journey by bearing witness. Poetry is the language of observation and we often see signs and symbols in the world that others overlook. But we can’t always stay on the sidelines—sometimes life throws us into the world before we’re ready\, which can lead to undue harm. We all feel pain\, but the question then becomes: What can we do with it? \nThe quote above is from Olivia Benson\, protagonist of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit\, played by Mariska Hargitay. The link between this television show and our poetry contest might not be obvious\, but Hargitay not only bears witness in her twenty-five year run as Detective Olivia Benson\, she commits to protect the most vulnerable among us and fosters a space for healing as well. Her dedication is admirable\, and we at Frontier are making the same promise. Let’s not forget that the word “poem” comes from the Greek word for “create.” It’s not just about seeing or believing\, it’s about what you make from  what you’ve seen and what you’ve learned. \nThis year’s Hurt & Healing Prize is about expressing our pain\, but it’s also about celebrating all we have overcome. It is also a call to action—an invitation to support each other in the darkest times. We may feel as if the path forward isn’t clear—but as a community\, we answer these questions together.\nFurther reading for inspiration can be found here: \n“Am I Going to Kill My Daughter” | The Poetry Foundation \n“Grief” | The Poetry Foundation \n“Arthritis is one thing\, the hurting another” by Camille T. Dungy – Poems | Academy of American Poets \nThe first place winner will receive $3\,000 and publication. Second- and third-place winners will receive $300 and $200 respectively\, as well as publication.\nAbout Our Judge:  \nRobert Wood Lynn is a poet from Virginia. He is the author of the collection Mothman Apologia (Yale University Press\, 2022) and the chapbook How to Maintain Eye Contact (Button Poetry\, 2023). He is the recipient of the 2021 Yale Younger Poets Prize\, the 2023 Kate Tufts Discovery Award\, and a 2023 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. His work has been featured in American Poetry Review\, The Atlantic\, POETRY\, The Yale Review\, and other publications. He teaches poetry at Juilliard and Brooklyn Poets. \nWhat our judge is looking for:  \nI am honored to be asked to jury Frontier’s poetry contest themed on hurt and healing\, because so much of the work of poetry happens in this space of change—hurt and healing not simply or even necessarily as subject but as experience\, since that is what a poem is: an experience rather than a recounting. I am interested in poems that wound us gently\, or that restore something inside us\, or both. Poems that help us reach the interior and emotional spaces no other medium could. That let language work indirectly\, through image\, metaphor\, surprise\, and play\, to accomplish things impossible in straightforward retelling. \nGuidelines: \n\nSubmissions are open to new and emerging writers (for this contest\, we define this as poets with no more than one full-length work of poetry published or forthcoming at the time of submission).\nSend up to three poems per submission\, for a total of no more than five pages. We have no aesthetic or formal requirements and consider all styles of poetry. Each new submission requires a $20 reading fee.\nAs part of our dedication to the pursuit of a more inclusive publishing world\, we offer a free submission window for poets from historically marginalized groups (BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, disabled community\, et cetera) at the beginning of the contest until our cap of fifty. This submission category has reached its cap and is now closed.\nDo not include any identifying information in the body of your document.\nPlease submit unpublished poems only.\nWe welcome simultaneous submissions\, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.\nYou may submit multiple times\, but each submission requires a separate $20 fee.\nPlease provide a brief cover letter that includes a short\, third-person bio with your publication history and any applicable content warnings.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing in English. Inclusion of other languages is welcome\, as long as the poem is primarily written in English.\nPlease do not submit work if you have a personal relationship with the judge.\nIf you haven’t already\, please verify your email address with Submittable for more consistent communication.\nWe will not accept AI-generated work for this contest.\nIf you have any questions\, please visit our FAQ page first. If you don’t find the answer to your question\, you can send an email to contact (at) frontierpoetry (dot) com.\n\nEditorial Feedback Option:\nThis option costs $59 and will provide you with two pages of detailed and actionable feedback on a poem of your choice from your packet\, including suggestions for future submissions. The $149 option will provide you with three letters from three different editors. Our guest editors are paid a significant portion of the fee and all are astute and professional poets.

Poets are encouraged to submit a cohesive collection consisting of ten to fifteen pages of poetry\, but no more than ten poems. \nThe four winners will each receive $500 and 2025/2026 publication\, which includes a free downloadable digital chapbook on our website\, ten physical author copies to share and sell\, and the option to enable sales at Amazon\, Bookshop.org\, and Barnes & Noble\, earning 50% royalties on your micro chapbook. We will also host a virtual launch party to celebrate your micro chapbook publication date. Additionally\, thousands of readers\, editors\, and journals will receive micro chapbook access through our newsletter. The winners will be offered the opportunity to work with Palette editors to revise the manuscript. \nWe hope that you enjoy curating a micro chapbook from your body of work that would best fit one of the following themes: \nWinter \nPoems about retreat\, rescue\, camaraderie\, coldness\, mentorship\, stirring\, archiving\, forests\, chopping\, sinking\, wrapping\, and dreaming. \nSpring \nPoems about travel\, colors\, digging\, dancing\, sewing\, singing\, feathers\, heartbreak\, parks\, seeking\, citrus\, and softness. \nSummer \nPoems about emptiness\, sky\, expanse\, eating\, flowing\, running\, reaching\, towers\, shouting\, fingertips\, swimming\, and glass. \nFall \nPoems about cobblestones\, fire\, arguments\, graveyards\, ink\, candles\, blankets\, apartments\, planning\, reading\, and watching. \nSubmission Guidelines: Please read carefully! \n\nFor this prize\, we are only accepting collections consisting of ten to fifteen pages (not including cover page\, table of contents\, or acknowledgments) containing no more than ten poems.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing in English—inclusion of other languages is welcome\, as long as the poem is largely written in English.\nSome of your micro chapbook may contain poems that have been previously published. We ask that at least one-third of the micro chapbook is unpublished at the time of submission. Of course\, it is not necessary for any of the poems to be previously published—we are excited to celebrate micro chapbooks of brand-new work as well!\nWe accept simultaneous submissions—just please send us a note if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere.\nYour submission must be no more than ten poems and no more than fifteen pages. Please submit all your poems in ONE document. Please begin each poem on a new page and include each poem’s individual title. In the same document\, please also include: a cover page with the micro chapbook title and your name\, a table of contents\, and an acknowledgements page with any previous publication credits.\nWhen you submit\, you can indicate which season you think your micro chapbook best fits. However\, we will also consider it for other seasons\, so don’t feel the need to get this designation exactly right.\nWe do accept multiple submissions; for example\, if you would like to submit a different micro chapbook for a different theme\, each submission will include the $20 reading fee.\nPlease include a brief cover letter in the cover letter box with your publication history\, if any. To safeguard our reading staff\, please include content warnings in the cover letter\, if applicable\, as well.\nReview our FAQ page for frequently asked questions.\nNOTE: If after submitting you notice an error in your submission\, please message us rather than withdrawing and resubmitting your submission. We can open it to editing once so you can correct the error.\nPalette Poetry does not accept AI-produced work.\nSubmitters will be notified of their submission status sixteen to twenty weeks after the contest’s closing date.\n\nIncluded Unique Opportunities and Discounts \nAs a thank you for your support for Palette\, we’d like to offer a 10% off discount code on a writing class from The Writing Salon. Find a class and use the code included in the confirmation message at checkout. \nEditorial Feedback Option \nThis manuscript review costs $99 and will provide you with three pages of detailed and actionable feedback on your micro chapbook. Our guest editors will evaluate the themes\, strengths\, and opportunities for revision in your micro chapbook as a whole\, and may give more specific feedback on individual poems. Our guest editors are paid a significant portion of the fee and are all incredibly astute poets.

SUMMARY:PFN - After Happy Hour Contest. Theme: Food
DESCRIPTION:We’re putting together a feast of words for our 4th contest issue. For this call\, we’re looking for stories\, essays\, and poems that feature food. That could be as a central image\, an aspect of the plot (cooking it\, eating it\, growing it\, etc.)\, a defining trait of the characters (cooks\, servers\, baking show contestants\, etc.)\, or a key detail of the setting (restaurant\, farm\, canning factory\, etc.). However it’s used\, food should feel necessary for and integrated into the work–we’re looking for more than just a passing mention of breakfast on the character’s way out the door. \nFood isn’t just limited to Earth/human fare\, either. Anything that a being consumes for sustenance counts as “food” for the purposes of this theme: predators hunting prey\, plant-based lifeforms that “eat” sunlight\, synthetic protein pastes\, or any other means of gaining nutrients a lifeform could use. Beverages can also count\, though we’re not interested in the typical “bunch of people in a bar” stories (unless you’re doing something very new\, cool\, and different with it). \nThe contest will be judged by the After Happy Hour editors. We read submissions anonymously\, so please remove your name and other identifying information from your file before sending it.\n \n\n\nPoetry: Send up to 3 individual poems\, no line or word limits. \nFiction: Send a single short story or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We have no upper word limits\, and aren’t opposed to publishing stories upwards of 5\,000 words that justify their real estate. \nCreative non-fiction: Send a single short work or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We are specifically looking for creative non-fiction for this issue\, not scholarly essays about literary genres or subgenres (though if you’re using the tropes of scholarly essays within the context of a narrative or lyric piece\, that we do want to see). \nSuites: Send up to 5 linked works that will be considered as a set. Individual works within a suite can be poems or flash or micro-length prose (under 1\,000 words each). \nHybrid/Cross-Genre: Yes\, please. Follow whichever of the above guidelines makes the most sense. \nPrize Info: \nThe winners and honorable mentions for this contest will receive a percentage of the total entry fees paid (including purchases of After Happy Hour print issues): \n·         Up to 3 “ranked winners” will split 30%. \n·         Up to 3 honorable mentions will split 15% \nAll submitted works will also be considered for publication in the issue. If we publish your work and you don’t win a prize\, you’ll be paid at the standard contributor rate ($2.50 per printed page\, with a minimum of $15 and maximum of $50). \nHow much will I win\, though? \nIn the first 3 years\, the prize ranged between $103-$320 for winners\, and from $56-$160 for honorable mentions. We’ll post periodic updates on the Submittable page as the reading period moves along so you can get a sense for what you stand to win. \n\nGENERAL GUIDELINES\n\n\nPlease include a brief (100 word max) 3rd-person bio in your cover letter.\nTo limit editor and reader bias\, we read all submissions anonymously. To this end\, we ask submitters to remove their name and contact information from the document itself.\nWe are not opposed to sex\, violence\, or profanity when they are necessary to the story—we’re fans of all three\, in fact. Having said that\, we will not accept any work that contains hateful or discriminatory content\, including racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, and transphobia. Gratuitous sex and violence will probably get you rejected\, too.\nUse standard manuscript format (12-point Serif font\, standard margins and spacing). It’s not like we’ll reject you for a bad font (probably) but it makes it easier to read\, and that makes us happy. The exception is poetry that uses non-standard formatting for stylistic reasons. Prose writers have no excuse.\nWe accept submissions only through Submittable. If the Submittable platform presents an accessibility barrier\, please email us at AfterHappyHour@gmail.com and we’ll find a workaround.\nWe accept and encourage simultaneous submissions. All we ask is that you be a good literary citizen and withdraw your submission through Submittable if it’s accepted elsewhere (if you’re withdrawing part of a submission\, you can send us an e-mail). It is also expected that you’ll withdraw your submission from consideration by other journals if After Happy Hour accepts it.\nPlease send only one submission per category at a time. We’ll happily consider submissions in multiple categories from the same author (e.g. a poem and a story).\nIf you work in mixed genres (hybrid poetry/fiction\, illustrated stories\, etc.) submit the work in the category that seems to fit the best\, and we’ll figure it out.\nOur response time is generally less than 6 weeks\, but we are humans (mostly) and have been known to fall behind. If you haven’t heard from us in 3 months or more\, you can send an e-mail and give us a nudge. You can also check on the status of your submission at any time by logging into your Submittable account.\nAccepted submissions may be edited for grammar. All changes are sent to the author for approval before publication.\nWe acquire first publishing rights and electronic archive rights. All rights revert to the author following the work’s publication in After Happy Hour you can re-publish and anthologize your work at will. Content can be removed from the website on request\, but cannot be removed from the the issue in which it was published.

SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contests' Fall Black Prize Theme: Fragments of Time
DESCRIPTION:Fall Black Prize: Fragments of Time \nBlack Fox is accepting submissions for its Fall 2024 Black Fox Prize. The theme for this round is “Fragments of Time.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWhen we think of time\, we often think of a ticking clock. But time is more than merely seconds\, minutes\, hours\, or measurements. Time also has the power to shape our lives. It can be a fleeting moment\, a seemingly endless stretch\, or a loop. Time can be a guardian of memories\, the signal for change\, and the constant that connects us to the world around us. \nFor this contest\, we’re looking for writers to explore the intricacies of time: How does it mold us\, ruin us\, or set us free? Is time a friend or an enemy? Does time heal or wound? Whether it’s traveling through centuries\, racing against the clock\, or pausing in a single\, spectacular moment\, we want work that investigates the mysteries\, difficulties\, joy\, or wonder of time. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $325 and publication in the Winter 2025 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Winter 2025 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on December 1\, 2024. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager\, found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of January 2025\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:F - Fiction Potluck Contest Seeking Submissions on the Theme: A Very Speculative Holiday

SUMMARY:P - Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize. Theme: Love\, Faith\, & Sex
DESCRIPTION:Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize — $2000 Awarded\n\n\n\nEnds on Thu\, Nov 7\, 2024 11:59 PM \n\n\n\nThe reading period for the Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize runs from September 21 to November 7 (LC’s birth anniversary to death anniversary).\n$1000 will be awarded to a poem that explores the intersection of love\, faith & sex. Four finalists will each be awarded $250.\n\nABOUT THE PRIZE\nPoet\, novelist\, singer/songwriter\, artist\, music producer\, Buddhist monk\, Leonard Cohen has won countless hearts. \nI found his music six years ago and haven’t listened to much else since. Now every morning when I drop my daughter off to preschool\, she and I sing along to “Suzanne” on the way. Having spent countless hours with the Leonard Cohen Archive at the University of Toronto\, I’m in awe of the devotion he had for his craft\, blackening page after page. \nHis ability to blend the sacred and the profane\, the spiritual and the sensual remains unmatched. We are indebted to him for bridging the world of literature with the world of music. \nA couple of times in concerts\, he sang this two-liner: “no\, it wasn’t any good\, there’s no reason why you should remember me” while having given us a million reasons to remember him. \nWe hope this will push people who are aware of Cohen’s genius as a musician to turn to his poetry. It gives us deep honor to name this prize after the one and only Leonard Cohen and carry a part of his infinite legacy on our slim shoulders. \nAs Leonard would say\, forgive the poverty of these words for they do not reflect the abundance of our gratitude. \n— Karan Kapoor\, Editor-in-Chief\, ONLY POEMS \n  \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nSend us up to 3 pages of poetry. \nEach poem starts on a new page. \nIn the spirit of Leonard Cohen\, we ask that your poems deal in some way with the intersections of Love\, Faith\, & Sex. \nWe only accept previously uncurated work. \nWe love cover letters and would prefer knowing whose work we are reading. You are welcome to share your love for Leonard Cohen\, your publication history\, if any\, though that would not influence our decision. Please make sure that the document of your poems is stripped of any biographical information—use the cover letter field on Submittable for this. \nPlease withdraw your poems if they get accepted elsewhere. \nWe will respond to everyone by the end of this year. Winners will be announced and published in January. \nThere will be no deadline extensions. \nYour submission comes with an exclusive 33% discount off any of the annual ONLY POEMS membership tiers ($33-$82 value). \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThe Leonard Cohen Family Trust does not endorse this award\, ONLY POEMS\, or the prize winners. It is for their generosity we are allowed to name this prize after Leonard Cohen\, the Poet Laureate of the World.

Our judges are Marilyn Timms and Katherine Parsons. \nAll entries presented to the judges are anonymous. Our entry system automatically sends only the actual poems to the judges. Details of author and payment details are stored separately\, filed under the title of each poem. The administration database is locked until judging is complete\, when the names of successful poets are discovered and linked with their poem titles. \n\n\n\nRules for The Beginning . . . of the End competition 2024\nClosing date: 30 September 2024 at 11.59 BST\n\nThe contest is open to all poets\, except those who act as volunteers for Wildfire Words/Frosted Fire or major prizewinners in the last two years of Frosted Fire/Wildfire Words competitions.\nAll poems must be entirely the entrant’s own\, unpublished work.\nInternational entrants are welcome\, but entries must be in English. Entry fees are not refundable once an entry has been received.\nWork will not be returned\, so please keep a copy.\nWe are unable to give feedback on individual entries or on the results of the competition — the judges’ decisions are final.\nResults will be emailed by late October to all who entered\, and published on this website and social media.\nThe entry fee is £4 per poem or £12 for 4 — but on 10 September will rise to £5 per poem or £16 for 4.\nEntries must be paid for on the entry form\, and your entry file uploaded\, by the closing time of 11.59 pm on 30 September 2024. Our banking for credit or debit card payments is provided by PayPal\, but you do not need a PayPal account to pay by card.

SUMMARY:PFN - Didcot Writers Writing Competition. Theme: Contronyms
DESCRIPTION:Our current theme is: contronyms\nA contronym is a word that can mean two things\, which are opposites. We can dust a cake to add something to the surface\, or we can dust a shelf and remove something. Something can be held fast\, meaning it cannot move\, or it can be moving fast. A sanction can mean permission for something or punishment for something. See what contronyms you can come up with (feel free to google) and see what direction it takes your creative writing. \nDeadline for submissions: 30th September 2024 \nSubmission guidelines:\n\nSubmit your entry via the google form linked under ‘How to Submit’ below. Please note the entry fee for those who are not participants at our free online events.\nRespond to the theme/challenge/prompt. If you’ve got the perfect piece of work but it doesn’t fit the current challenge\, get in touch to suggest a theme for next time!\nThere is no lower word limit. The upper word limit (not including title) is 500 words.\nThere are no strict formatting requirements\, but nothing too weird please.\nPlease title your document with your entry title\, and also put the title at the top of the work. Do not include your name in the document as entries will be read anonymously. Full credit will be given to the author if the work is published.\nNo really bad swear words or explicit content\, please.\nSubmissions are welcomed from around the world\, but must be in English.\nWe don’t mind simultaneous submissions\, or if your entry has been published elsewhere in the past\, but please make sure your work is copyright cleared for it to be published online if chosen. (For example\, if you need to include the line ‘first published in…’ to comply with a former publisher’s terms\, let us know.)\nIf your work is selected as winner or ‘Reader’s Choice’ it will be published on our website. We reserve the right to make minor edits. We would like to leave your work on our site indefinitely\, but if you would like it removed after a minimum of 12 months online please get in touch.\nThere will be no monetary payments to authors for work accepted as this is a non-profit competition run by volunteers; there is a possibility your work may be included in a printed/ebook anthology in future – we will get in touch if we want to include your work.\nWe will keep your data in accordance with GDPR\, and use your email address only to contact you to announce the competition winners and let you know of new competition opportunities (maximum one email a month after the announcement of winners). You can unsubscribe at any time\, just email didcotwriters@gmail.com.\n\nHow to submit:\nIf you have not attended one of our events (online or otherwise) in the last 12 months you will need to pay a fee of £4 per entry. If you are unable to pay this fee\, all you have to do to receive a free entry is attend one of our events (there are lots of free events and many are online – see bit.ly/didcotwriters-calendar for dates\, and email didcotwriters@gmail.com for the links). \nPay the competition entry fee via PayPal here or via SumUp here (it’s the same price to you in both places\, but SumUp take less commission\, so we like them better). \nFor multiple entries: even for event participants only your first entry is free\, no matter how many events you have attended. So for second and subsequent entries to the same competition please pay the £4 fee using the link above. If you want to pay for multiple entries to the same competition you can do it as one transaction. \nSubmit your entry via the google form here (you will need to sign in). \nPlease make your document title the same as the title of your entry\, and include your title in your document (it’s not counted in the word count). All this saves us a headache later.

This contest is open to poets who have not yet published a full-length collection at the time of submission. We look forward to celebrating new and exciting work\, so please send us your best poems. The first-place winning poet will be awarded $3\,000\, publication\, and an interview in Palette Poetry. The second-place and third-place winners will receive $300 and $200\, respectively\, as well as publication. The top ten finalists will be selected by Palette editors\, and Guest Judge Morgan Parker will choose the three winners from among the ten finalists. \nMorgan Parker is the author of five books\, most recently the essay collection\, You Get What You Pay For. Previous titles include Who Put This Song On?\, a young adult novel; and the poetry collections Other People’s Comfort Keeps Me Up at Night\, There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé\, and Magical Negro\, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Poets with no publication history are especially encouraged to submit. Poets with only chapbooks published are also eligible. Poets with self-published full-length collections\, however\, are ineligible.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing in English—inclusion of other languages is welcome\, as long as the poem is largely written in English.\nDO NOT INCLUDE your name or identifying information in the document OR submission title box.\nWe are only accepting unpublished work. If your poem has been published elsewhere\, even on a blog or on social media\, it is not eligible.\nWe accept simultaneous submissions—just please send us a note if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere.\nYour submission must be no more than three poems and under ten pages. Please submit all your poems in ONE document. Please begin each poem on a new page and include each poem’s individual title.\nWe do accept multiple submissions (of one to three poems apiece)\, but each submission will include the $20 reading fee.\nPlease include a brief cover letter in the cover letter box with your publication history\, if any. This is where you can include your name and/or bio! If you select the editorial feedback option\, this cover letter is also where you can name which poem you’d like feedback on. To safeguard our reading staff\, please include content warnings in the cover letter\, if applicable\, as well.\nReview our FAQ page for frequently asked questions.\nNOTE: If after submitting you notice an error in your submission\, please message us rather than withdrawing and resubmitting your submission. We can open it to editing once so you can correct the error.\nPalette Poetry does not accept AI-produced work.\nContest closes September 22\, 2024. Submitters will be notified of their submission status 8-12 weeks after the contest closing date.

It’s time to put them down. \nWrite a 53-word story about a set \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe winner for September will receive a free copy of What Dwells between the Lines: Fifty-Three 53-Word Story Contest Winners Plus Tips on Writing Remarkably Brief Fiction\, and their story will appear on this page for the month of October and will be published in Issue 269 of Prime Number Magazine on January 1\, 2025. \nPlease read our guidelines carefully\nNO ATTACHMENTS\, PLEASE!\nPaste your story in the body of your email to 53wordstory@gmail.com\nHINT: Each month\, when we offer a new prompt\, we introduce it with a short 53-word description that suggests several ways you might consider the prompt. Even the photo can offer a different way to look at it. What are we looking for? A story that surprises us in its approach to the prompt\, something unusual and creative. The first idea that pops into your head probably popped into the heads of others too\, so you might want to take another look at how your story can be different. Challenge yourself to find an unusual way to write a 53-word story about the prompt\, and don’t think you have to use the prompt in your story\, literally; implying the word works too. Surprise us! That’s what we are looking for. \nHere’s how to enter (please read our guidelines carefully before sending us your story): \n–Your story must be 53 words—no more\, no less—titles are not included in the word count. Stories with fewer than or more than 53 words will be disqualified. Send only stories; poetry with line breaks will not be considered.\n–There is no age limit. This is a FREE contest\, so there is no age restriction.\n–Be careful of word count. Hyphenated words count as one word.\n–Titles are not included in the word count. If your story is not titled\, we will create a title for publication.\n–One submission per person. ‘Nough said.\n–NO ATTACHMENTS! Paste your story into the body of your email. Stories sent as attachments\, or images embedded in the email\, will not be considered.\n–By entering this contest the author grants Press 53 First Serial Rights to publish the story in Prime Number Magazine and to archive it permanently on our website. All other rights remain with the author.\n–Email your story directly to 53wordstory@gmail.com by the 15th  day of the month\, midnight Eastern Time. NO ATTACHMENTS\, PLEASE! \nOur judges for the 53-Word Story Contest are the editors of Press 53 and Prime Number Magazine. Our winner for this month’s contest will receive a free book from Press 53\, and the winning story will appear here on the 53-Word Story Contest page for the entirety of the month following the contest\, and will also be published\, along with the author’s *photo and 53-word bio\, in the next issue of Prime Number Magazine. \n(*we will request your photo and 53-word bio if your story is our winner\, so be prepared!)
