SUMMARY:P - the ruth weiss foundation 2024 Poetry Contest: Haiku poems (fee-based)
DESCRIPTION:2024 ruth weiss Foundation Poetry Contest: Unleash Your Verse \n“I want my poems to evoke” — from the ruth weiss film\, ruth weiss The Beat Goddess trailer. \nDive into the Haiku Contest for 2024! Poets and dreamers\, this is your call to craft in the realm of haiku\, where each syllable bursts with meaning\, and every pause can capture a universe. \nWhy Haiku? Haiku distills poetry to its essence—17 beats\, a touch of nature\, a moment of Zen. Matsuo Basho captured it best: a silent pond\, a frog leaps\, and then silence again. It’s the art of minimalism\, where quiet truths resonate between the lines. \nThe Beat Generation’s Twist: Jack Kerouac saw haiku as a snapshot of life\, spontaneous and raw. He infused his verses with the rhythm of Bee Bop jazz\, transforming traditional haiku into quick\, sparse reflections of modern chaos. Similarly\, ruth weiss\, poet\, playwright\, artist\, and filmmaker\, painted her haikus across canvases\, blending jazz music and vibrant hues to evoke deep human emotions and experiences. \nTradition Meets Rebellion: We honor haiku’s rich legacy while daring to disrupt. Just as Kerouac and weiss reimagined traditional forms\, we invite you to either stand with the masters or chart new territories with your haiku. \nContest Categories and Prizes: \n• Maverick: $1\,200 \n• Emergent: $1\,000 \n• Youth (18 and under): $800 \n• School Grant (up to three schools): $900 \n• Founder’s Prize: $100 \n• Honorable Mentions: $200 each for the final ten winners (Total: $2\,000) \nPrize allocations may adjust depending on entry volume. \nHow to Begin? \nThe Essence of Haiku: Embrace kigo (season words) and kireji (cutting words)—the vital elements that ground your verse in the now and slice through to the heart. \nLive it: Write a haiku to a friend and share the inspiration. \nCan You Dig It? \nPlease send us your verses\, whether they cling to classic cliffs or dance on the edge of new waves. Join us in celebrating poetic legacy and innovation. Together\, let’s craft a tapestry of haiku that honors tradition and propels it into the future. \nPLEASE READ: \nCategories – choose one you belong to: \nMaverick – Ages 26 and up. The Maverick Award is open to all poets that embody the spirit of the maverick; whether published or not\, ruth weiss’s spirit is the exemplar of the Maverick. \nEmerging – Between ages 18 and 25. Emergent poets include a wide range of writers –those that exude a passion for writing. ruth weiss championed emerging poets throughout her long life as a bell-weather writer watching others evolve. \nYouth – Aged 18 and below to age 15. Share your love of writing and creativity while you explore the poet ruth weiss. \nMake sure your poem has never been published before. \nIf you win\, you agree for us to be able to publish your poem on our website. \n\n[Leave blank – add poem on the next step ‘application form’] \nMake sure your poem has never been published before. \nAll types of haiku are acceptable\, not just the formal. \n\nIf you win\, you agree for us to be able to publish your poem on our website.

Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases that contain a kireji\, or “cutting word”\, 17 on (phonetic units similar to syllables) in a 5\, 7\, 5 pattern\, and a kigo\, or seasonal reference. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as senryū. \nHaiku originated as an opening part of a larger Japanese poem called renga. These haiku written as an opening stanza were known as hokku and over time writers began to write them as stand-alone poems. Haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century. \n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind: \nFor haiku inspiration\, look closely at everything around you in nature\, at home\, at school\, and at work. Write your draft of a haiku\, letting yourself be free and creative. Then ask the following questions about your haiku to help you improve them.\n \n\nHow long is your haiku? It’s usually good to write in three lines of about 10 to 17 syllables. In Japanese\, you will want to stay with 5-7-5 sounds (‘mora’). In English\, haiku don’t have to be in the pattern of 5-7-5 syllables.\nSee this link if you want to know more. \nThe following questions are much more important to observe:\nDoes your haiku name or suggest one of the seasons—spring\, summer\, fall\, or winter? In Japanese\, a kigo or “season word” tells readers when the poem happens\, such as saying “tulips” for spring or “snow” for winter. This is one of the most important things to do in haiku.\nFor our contest this year\, you want to give it a Spring theme!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind (continued): \n\nDoes your poem make a “leap\,” by having two parts? In Japanese\, a kireji or “cutting word” usually cuts the poem into two parts (never three). It’s not just having two parts that matters\, though. Rather\, it’s the implication in the relationship of the two parts that matters. Giving your poem two often fragmentary parts is also one of the most important goals in haiku.\nIs your haiku about common\, everyday events in nature or human life? To help you do this\, describe what you experience through your five senses.\nDoes your poem give readers a feeling? It can do this by presenting what caused your feeling rather than the feeling itself. So others can feel what you felt\, don’t explain or judge what you describe.\nIs your poem in the present tense? To make your haiku feel like it’s happening right now\, use the present tense.\nDid you write from your own personal experience? When you write other kinds of poetry\, you can make things up\, but try not to do that with haiku. Memories are okay\, though.\nHow did you capitalize or punctuate your poem? Haiku are usually not sentences (they’re usually fragments)\, so they don’t need to start with a capital\, or end with a period.\nDoes your haiku avoid a title and rhyme? Haiku are not like other poems\, which may have these features. SUMMARY:PFN - The Capilano Review Spring Writing Contest: "Environments"
DESCRIPTION:The Capilano Review is pleased to invite submissions to its Spring 2024 Writing Contest\, guest-judged by Renee Gladman. \nThere is an air moved in the open—in around the thing about us. Where we lived remained so\, though there were occasional changes\, what we called moves\, of change of place or how we were there\, would stay there and because I liked that\, lived there. \nThrough these words from visionary thinker and writer Lyn Hejinian (1941–2024)\, we understand that the lands we inhabit (be they grasses\, cities\, paragraphs\, days\, our own bodies) exist in a constant state of flux\, moving as we move\, changing as we change\, all the time being made and unmade\, being seen and unseen. In writing with and about the environments that encompass us\, we form a relationship of drifts\, contortions\, and intimacies that shape the narratives of our experiences into speculations of care and wonder. This is a call for your meditations\, your forensics\, your elegies\, your wanderings on the possibilities of ongoing and intersecting geographies. How do we write an evolving ecology that supports mutability? What will be the future forms of our habitations? Lyric essays\, fiction\, poetry\, and other language-based interdisciplinary works are encouraged. \nThe winner will receive a $500 cash prize and publication in an upcoming print issue of The Capilano Review. The winner will be announced in August 2024. \nSubmission Guidelines \n\nSubmission period: April 15–May 15\, 2024\nWork must be original and previously unpublished\nSubmit up to 6 pages of poetry\, prose\, or other short experimental forms (PDF or Word formats only)\nAll entries will be considered anonymously. Please do not include your name or other identifying fields on your manuscript pages\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted\, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere so that we can remove your entry from the contest\n\nSubmission Fees*\n$25 for Canadian entries** \n$35 for US/International entries \n*Submission fee includes a complimentary one-year subscription to The Capilano Review.\n**Note: Submission fee is waived for Indigenous entrants. Please email contact@thecapilanoreview.com directly for alternate instructions to submit your work.

SUMMARY:P - Frontier Poetry's 2024 Nature & Place Prize. Theme: Nature & Place
DESCRIPTION:2024 Nature & Place Prize\nFebruary 22\, 2024\, to April 28\, 2024\nIn our pursuit of gentleness\, nostalgia\, and a reimagining of “home\,” Frontier Poetry is reviving the Nature & Place Prize. In her poem “Drowning Creek\,” Ada Limón takes us into the countryside\, “Past the strip malls and the power plants\, / out of the holler\, past Gun Bottom Road / and Brassfield and before Red Lick Creek\, / there’s a stream called Drowning Creek….” On her journey\, she has the strong urge to stop the car and observe the kingfisher perched on the transmission wire “eyeing the creek / for crayfish\, tadpoles\, and minnows.” She has aptly combined the urge to be in communion with nature\, with the visceral landscape of place observed from the loneliness of a car ride. In this same vein\, we invite you to submit work to the 2024 Nature & Place Prize. \nWe’re looking for poems rich and robust in language\, technique\, and form that pay homage to the natural world and all of the small marvels that occur in nature. We’re also interested in poems that observe geography and the landscape of home. Frontier Poetry warmly encourages poets of all backgrounds\, identities\, and ethnicities to enter. \nThe first-place winner will receive $3\,000 and publication. Second- and third-place winners will receive $300 and $200 respectively\, as well as publication. All shortlisted writers will also be considered for paid publication in New Voices. \n\nAbout the Guest Judge:\nFlower Conroy is a LGBTQIA+ artist\, NEA and MacDowell Fellow\, and former Key West Poet Laureate. Conroy’s books include Snake Breaking Medusa Disorder (winner of the Stevens Manuscript Prize)\, A Sentimental Hairpin (Eric Hoffer Finalist)\, and Greenest Grass (winner of the Blue Lynx Poetry prize). Her work has appeared/is forthcoming in New England Review\, American Literary Review\, The Yale Review\, and elsewhere. Currently she is curating a series of Ephemeral Altars that celebrate poetry collections through assemblage art. \nWhat Flower Is Looking For:\nWhen I initially heard the theme “Nature & Place\,” I had a confident (albeit vague) idea what that might mean; however\, the more I thought about it\, my sense of nature and place became excitingly less certain\, amorphous\, vast. I want (from these submissions) what I’d want from any poem: I want to encounter that which I didn’t know I needed to encounter; I want surprise of detail and syntax\, for a microcosm of a perspective and language (or languages) to flesh out a world I get lost in\, to be entranced by keenness of being and experience retold; I want nuance\, subtext\, and imagery to awe me. The theme of “Nature & Place” strikes me as abstractly concrete and concretely abstract—it conjures landscape\, yes\, but perhaps landscape as a presence in relation to a self or selves. It’s flesh and dirt\, past and future\, internal and external. I’ve no preconceived notions of what the poems should be beyond being visceral. \n\nGuidelines:\n\nSubmissions are open to all poets\, regardless of publication history.\nSend us only your best\, polished work—unpublished poems only\, please.\nAs part of our dedication to the pursuit of a more inclusive publishing world\, we are offering a free submission window for poets from historically marginalized groups at the beginning of the contest until we reach our cap of fifty. Please note the free portal will close when we hit our submission cap.\nPlease do not include any identifying information in the body of your document.\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.\nWe ask for no more than three poems (five pages) per submission. Please submit all your poems in ONE document. We have no particular aesthetic or formal requirements and consider all styles of poetry.\nEach entry requires a submission fee of $20.\nMultiple submissions (of up to three poems apiece) are allowed\, but each requires a separate entry fee.\nPlease include a brief cover letter with your publication history and personal bio. Also include any content warnings in consideration of our reading staff.\nWork generated by AI will be automatically disqualified.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing primarily in English. Some code-switching/meshing is very welcome.\nPlease do not submit work if you have a close relationship with the guest judge.\nIf you have any questions\, please visit our FAQ page. If you don’t find the answer to your question\, email us: contact (at ) frontierpoetry (dot) com.\nThe deadline is April 28\, 2024. We plan to announce winners and finalists in Summer 2024.\n\n\nEditorial Feedback Option:\nThis option costs $59 and will provide you with two pages of detailed and actionable feedback on your submission\, including suggestions for future submissions. The $149 option will provide you with three letters from three different editors. Our guest editors are paid a significant portion of the fee and all are astute and professional poets. Please allow eight to ten weeks after the contest closes to receive your feedback letter.

DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in our 2024 Short Story Contest! \nThis is a short story fiction writing contest. \nThe short story contest is open to any English language writer anywhere on Earth\, aged 13 years or older. \nWe are open to receiving submissions of short stories originally written in a language other than English\, that have since been translated to English.  If this is the case\, the original non-English manuscript must be available for review upon request. \nThe Theme: Sense of Place \nThe theme for this short story contest is A Sense of Place. \nWe don’t want to provide too much structure to our theme.  We hope contest entrants will interpret this theme as they see fit\, expressing a keen sense of place within 3000 to 10000 words of fictional narrative. \nHowever: Our simple definition for sense of place is: figuring out the reality of where you are\, and how you perceive that reality\, and what your perception of that reality means to you. \nSubmissions \nWe’ll be using our Submittable platform to accept submissions for the short story contest. \nNo other forms of submission will be accepted. \nPrizes and Awards \nThe contest winner will receive a $200 cash prize. \nSeveral honorable mentions may be awarded to additional short story submissions. \nAdditionally\, three thematic prizes may be awarded in this short story contest\, depending on the quality of submissions\, at the discretion of The Upper New Review publisher.  These prizes include: \n\nDana Meadows Award – for demonstrated systems wisdom\nFritjof Capra Award – for demonstrated understanding of the hidden connections of the web of life\nGary Snyder Award – for demonstrated understanding of bioregionalism\n\nAll winners (the contest winner\, any honorable mentions\, and any thematic prize winners) will be published in The Upper New Review. \nRules and Guidelines \nThe entry fee to submit a single manuscript to the short story contest is $15. \nAll short stories entered into the contest will also be considered for publication in The Upper New Review\, regardless of the outcome of this contest. \nUploaded short story manuscripts should be properly formatted.  At a minimum\, manuscripts should be double-spaced\, using at least a 12-point serif font.  Please also include page numbers. \nSeveral standard file formats are acceptable for uploaded manuscripts.  PDF is preferred\, but not required. \nManuscripts do not need to be blinded for this contest.  This means that identifying information of the author should be included in the manuscript – this information does not need to be removed. \nThe minimum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 3\,000 words. \nThe maximum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 10\,000 words. \nAuthors may submit up to four total short stories for this contest.  Each short story entered requires a separate submission and $15 entry fee.  Additional submissions from a single author beyond the maximum allowed of four submissions will be automatically rejected. \nThe manuscript submission review process commences upon receipt of submission. \nManuscripts submitted early in the contest submission window may be accepted for publication before the end of the contest deadline.  Status for publication does not have any effect on the contest awards outcome. \nAll cash prizes may be awarded contingent upon the volume of submissions to the contest. Awards are subject to change based on these submission volumes\, including the potential for increase in awards. \nAll contest submissions are final.  The Upper New does not offer refunds for submissions\, except upon written request under extenuating circumstances. \nAdditional online events and curated publications may be announced for contest entries and winners\, contingent upon the number and quality of submissions to the contest.

DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for its Winter 2024 writing prize. The theme for this round is “Fairy Tale Remix.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWhat if the big bad wolf was a person who had a past? Or what if Snow White wasn’t so perfect on paper? \nWe’re looking for original work that reimagines fairy tales from around the world! We challenge writers to reshape classic fairy tales and invent their own spellbinding versions. Give us a twist to a familiar plot\, introduce modern elements\, or explore unconventional characters. This theme is a chance to remix fairy tales in your own distinctive way. Enchant the hearts of our readers! \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $300 and publication in the Summer 2024 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Summer 2024 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on March 31\, 2024. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager\, found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of July 2024\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:F - On the Premises Short Story Contest Theme: Vehicle
DESCRIPTION:The Current Contest\nShort Story Contest #43 launched on Sunday\, December 10\, 2023. \nVEHICLE \nFor this contest\, write a creative\, compelling\, well-crafted story between 1\,000 and 5\,000 words long in which some kind of vehicle plays an important role. Merely using the vehicle as a simple plot device or to help characters get somewhere is not enough. For instance\, “While flying home I made a bunch of new friends on the flight” isn’t good enough\, because the same story–making new friends–could easily be told without the plane. \nGENRE RULES: No fiction aimed at readers younger than 12\, no exploitative sex\, no over-the-top grossout horror\, and no stories that are obvious parodies of existing fictional worlds/characters created by other authors. (For the same reason\, we do not accept “fan fiction”.) Other than that\, we’ll take anything from the most super-realistic literary drama to crazy farces (real-world or otherwise) to any variant of science fiction or fantasy you can imagine. Read our past issues and you’ll see. \nDeadline: 11:59 PM Eastern US time\, Friday\, March 1\, 2024. \nOne entry per author. There is no fee for entering this contest.\nRemember to take all identifying information out of your story! Tell us who you are in the space provided in the web form cover letter you get when you click on the “submit” button\, NOT in your story! No headers\, no bylines… just the story.

SUMMARY:P - Yaffle's Nest Competition. Theme: "What we Inherit from Water"
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nWater is essential for life. We drink it\, wash with it\, swim in it. Some of our earliest memories involve the taste or smell or sound of it. Water has the power to change landscapes\, it can soothe and frighten us\, but one thing is for sure\, we can’t live without it. \nThis competition will look for poems that speak to us about what we inherit from water and what that means depends on your own relationship with it. We want to see poems which show what you get from water in all its many forms. Poems that show what water provides and what it takes away. How being near it and in it makes you feel and what it’s like to be without it. Use water to write about something else. Tell us how it is\, tell us how it isn’t! \nThe competition judge is Mark Connors. First prize is £200\, second prize £50.00 and the third prize £25.00. The prizewinning and longlisted poems will all be included in an anthology entitled ‘What we Inherit from Water’\, to be published under the Yaffle’s Nest banner next year and launched on a date and at a venue tbc. \nTo enter the competition\, please pay the appropriate fee on PayPal. \nPlease include the reference: Yaffle Prize. \nEmail your submissions to \nyafflesnest@gmail.com \nPlease also include your name\, contact details \nand address in the body of the email. \nNo names should appear on the submitted document. \nPlease submit all poems on one document via a word/docx attachment. \n \n\n\nRULES\nOnly poems of 40 lines or less will be considered. \nThe poems may be in any style. \nWork deemed to be offensive will not be considered. \nAll entries must be the work of the poet submitting. \nPreviously published poems are not permitted. \nWe will not be accepting translations of poetry. \nNo changes can be made to poems once they have been submitted. \nAny entries in violation to the above will be disqualified. \nNo refunds will be given once work has been submitted. \nThe decision from our judges is final. \nNo correspondence regarding entries will be entered into. \n**As the poems are blind judged\, to keep anonymity\, \npoems which have been workshopped by the judge will be disqualified \nEntries can be made online via Pay Pal

SUMMARY:PFN - After Happy Hour Contest Theme: Animals
DESCRIPTION:For this year’s contest\, we want submitters to go wild–or domesticated\, or sentient\, or whatever other form of beastly you’re feeling. In other words: we’re seeking work from any and all genres that involves non-human living creatures in some way\, shape\, or form. \nSubmissions that fit the theme will include some kind of animal. Note that this doesn’t need to be a real animal. It can be a cryptid like a chupacabra\, a hybrid made via genetic engineering\, a robot pet\, or some new species that you’ve made up. It also counts if it’s a human who becomes an animal–a Kafka-style transformation\, for example\, or a were-beast\, Selkie\, etc. The animal can be an image or metaphor\, too\, but we’re looking for more than a passing mention of birds singing from the trees. The animal should be integral to the story in some way\, be that as a character\, a plot point\, or a central theme. \nEach $10 entry can be: \n\n1 prose work of 1\,000 words or longer\nup to 3 individual poems sent in a single document\nup to 3 flash or micro prose pieces in a single document\n\n  \nNumbers update 1/1: At the halfway point of the contest\, we’ve received 67 entries and the prize pool is currently at $320. \nPoetry: Send up to 3 individual poems\, no line or word limits. \nFiction: Send a single short story or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We have no hard word count limits\, and welcome stories in that hard-to-publish 5\,000-10\,000 word length that justify their real estate. That said\, this is a print issue\, so we won’t be able to publish anything that’s a true novella length. \nCreative non-fiction: Send a single piece of 1\,000 words or longer\, or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We are specifically looking for lyric or narrative non-fiction\, not scholarly essays (though if you’re using the tropes of scholarly essays within the context of a creative essay\, that we do want to see). \nHybrid/Cross-Genre: Yes\, please. Follow whichever of the above guidelines makes the most sense for your work.\n \nPrize Info:\nThe winners and honorable mentions for this contest will receive a percentage of the total entry fees paid (including purchases of After Happy Hour print issues): \n\nUp to 3 “ranked winners” will split 30%.\nUp to 3 honorable mentions will split 15%\n\nHow this will look in practice will depend on the work we receive. Possible scenarios: \n\nThree 1st place winners\, one each in fiction\, poetry\, and CNF\, who each get 10%; three honorable mentions\, one in each category\, that get 5%\nTwo 1st place winners\, one each in poetry and prose\, who each get 15%; two honorable mentions\, one in each category\, that get 7.5%\nOverall 1st (20%) and 2nd (10%) place\, plus 1-3 overall honorable mentions\nA single Grand Prize winner who walks away with the whole 30%\, plus 1-3 overall honorable mentions\n\nThe more submissions we get\, the more winners and honorable mentions we’re likely to award. All submitted works will also be considered for publication in the issue. If we publish your work and you don’t win a prize\, you’ll get $10 (basically you’ll get your entry fee back) and 2 copies of the print issue. \nGeneral Guidelines: \n\nPlease include a brief (100 words max) 3rd-person bio with your submission.\nTo limit editor bias\, we read all submissions anonymously. To this end\, we ask submitters to remove their name and contact information from the document before submitting it.\nUse standard manuscript format (11- or 12-point font\, standard margins/spacing). We won’t reject you for weird spacing or a bad font (probably)\, but following this standard makes things easier to read\, and that makes the editors happy. Poets/experimental prose writers have more liberty here if the non-standard formatting is used for stylistic reasons. Straightforward prose writers have no excuse.\nWe accept submissions only through Submittable. Submissions sent to our e-mail will be deleted unread.\nMultiple submissions are allowed\, but each submission must be accompanied by its own $10 submission fee.\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted for the contest. However\, your entry fee will not be returned if the piece is accepted elsewhere and you need to withdraw it.\nPreviously published work is not accepted for the contest. We are looking for new\, unpublished stories for this issue.\nIf you need to withdraw a longer prose piece\, or an entire packet of poems or flash prose\, you can choose the “withdraw” option on Submittable. To withdraw a single poem or flash piece from a packet\, you can message us through Submittable or e-mail us (afterhappyhour [at] gmail [dot] com).\nAccepted submissions may be edited for grammar. All changes will be sent to the author for approval before publication.\nWe acquire first publishing rights and electronic archive rights. All other rights are retained by the author. Following the work’s publication in After Happy Hour\, you can re-publish and anthologize your work as you see fit. Content can be removed from the website on request\, but cannot be removed from the issue in which it was published.

SUMMARY:P - Passionfruit Poetry Prize. Theme: Being In Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Being In Bodies\n\n \n\nSubmissions to our first themed poetry competition are open until 31st January 2024 \n1ST PRIZE £250\n2ND PRIZE £50\n3RD PRIZE £25\nABOUT THE THEME:\nFor this poetry contest\, we are calling for poetry that engages with the experience of being in bodies. \nWe are always embedded in our environment. We inhabit physical bodies that exist in space while we are thinking\, feeling\, reading\, and writing. \nSend us poetry that recognises that embodiment in some way: poetry about breathing and breathlessness; poetry about soft touches and the sensation of sunlight on your skin; poetry about the body’s limits\, its pain\, its power and its powerlessness; poetry which makes us cringe and poetry that makes our blood boil; poetry that reminds us what it is to be human\, to exist in and to interact with bodies. \nAs always\, we are open to broad interpretations of the theme – feel free to surprise us and to stretch our imagination! \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nThe entry fee (per submission of up to 3 poems) is £4. If the fee prevents you from entering the contest\, get in touch with us at editor@passionfruitreview.com\nSubmissions are open to all poets writing in English.\nPoems must be previously unpublished.\nStrong language is fine – abusive or discriminatory language is not.\nSimultaneous submissions are welcome – just let us know promptly through the submissions manager if you need to withdraw any of your poems.\nSubmit 1-3 poems in a single file.\nPoems up to 40 lines will be considered (we consider longer poems as general submissions!)\nPlease note that the review process will be kept strictly anonymous. Do not include any identifying information in your attached documents.

SUMMARY:F - The Blue Frog Flash Fiction Prize. Theme: A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:2024 Theme: “A Sense of Place”\nWhether on the streets of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival or in a gas station bathroom somewhere outside Cedar Rapids\, where our characters are and where their stories take place has meaning. So we want to see stories were the setting comes to life and becomes a character all its own\, stories where the characters’ surroundings are irrevocably tied to their moments that matter\, stories where the setting reaches out and grabs the reader to place them right there in that specific time and place. It can be as grand as the moon or as mundane as the driveway\, we just want to be there! \nPrizes:\n1st Place: $500 \n2nd Place: $150 \n3rd Place: $50 \n** All three winners will also receive a signed book from the Guest Judge and the original artwork that accompanies their published story. \nRules & Misc.:\n— Fiction only. \n— 1\,000 words maximum (this is a firm limit). \n— All submissions should be the author’s original work and not previously published elsewhere (this includes blogs\, social media\, etc). \n— Multiple submissions are allowed\, but each should be submitted separately (with no limit to the amount of entries). \n— Simultaneous submission are allowed\, but please email to withdraw your submission as soon as it has been accepted elsewhere. There are no refunds of entry fees. Please also keep in mind our quick contest turnaround time when considering sim subs. \n— Publication rights: If selected as a winner and published in Flash Frog\, we ask for the right to display the work for the duration of the journal. Copyright remains with the writer in all cases. If your work is subsequently reprinted elsewhere\, please acknowledge Flash Frog as the site of first publication. \n— All previous Flash Frog contributors are eligible\, regardless of when they were published. \n— All submissions will receive a response before the finalists are announced. \n— Aside from a small fee to the Guest Judge and Artist\, 100% of entry fees go to Flash Frog writers/artists (contest prize money + helping us continue to be a paying market year round while keeping general submissions free). \n— Prize money will be paid via PayPal on the day of publication. \n— All entries are also eligible for standard Flash Frog publication. \n— Initial reading will be done by Flash Frog staff. Once finalists are selected\, any identifying information will then be removed from submissions so that the Guest Judge can read blindly. \nHow to Submit:\n— Please send each submission separately as an attachment to flashfroglitmag@gmail.com (please use .doc\, .docx. or .rtf). Please Use “CONTEST SUBMISSION: Your Story Title” as the subject. \n— Please pay the $5 submission fee using the link below. (If the name on your PayPal/Credit Card is drastically different than what appears in your submission email\, you may want to note this in your email.) \n— Once both your story and your payment are received\, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours.

I’m looking for writing that reflects the drive that nature has to just be\, no matter where the boundaries lie. I’m looking for innovation of craft and thought. Not just dandelions squeezing through the gaps between paving slabs\, what about the re-wilding of rivers\, what about the window box encouraging pollinators in a high rise flat\, what about the nightingales singing from the overgrowth of an industrial estate’s wasteland. Grow your thoughts\, let your poems flourish. Where is the connection to nature that doesn’t conform to stereotype? How do you connect to nature if your life is constrained by circumstance\, disability\, societal?  Nature Unbound is about thinking outside of traditional nature writing tropes. I’m excited to see where you take it.”
