SUMMARY:F - The Third Annual Grist Climate Fiction Short Story Contest "Imagine 2200. Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors"
DESCRIPTION:Premise\nGrist invites you to submit a climate fiction short story for our third annual contest\, Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. \nImagine 2200 celebrates stories that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress\, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance\, adaptation\, reform\, and hope. Stories must be set between today and the year 2200\, in a future that shows the path to a clean\, green\, just world. We are looking for stories that showcase creative climate solutions and community-centered adaptations. We especially want to read — and share — narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by the climate crisis and stories that envision what a truly equitable\, decolonized society could look like. \nIn 3\,000 to 5\,000 words\, show us the world you dream of building. \nWe love to see stories that are rooted in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place\, customs\, cuisine\, and more) and rich subcultures that uplift traditions not often seen in mainstream literature. In addition\, we love rich characters with fully-fledged identities\, stories that challenge the status quo of extraction and oppression\, and stories that incorporate real world climate solutions or climate science. Stories need not be overly optimistic or rosy — the path to climate progress will involve hard work\, struggle\, and adaptation\, and we invite you to show that\, too. \nFinally\, we are also excited to see climate themes in stories from across genres — love stories\, fantasy adventures\, mysteries\, comedies. Give us YOUR take on climate fiction and what hope for our future means to you. \nWe’ll be looking for these core elements: \n\nCreative climate solutions\nHope in action\nVivid characters\nCompelling story\nDecolonized futures\n\nWe will also judge submissions based on the quality of artistic voice\, originality\, craft\, and technique. \nWhat we’re offering to winners:  \n\nCash prizes\nPublication on Grist and Grist partner sites as part of our Imagine 2200 collection\nA reason to stay hopeful\n\nThe winning writer will be awarded $3\,000\, with the second- and third-place finalists receiving $2\,000 and $1\,000\, respectively. An additional nine finalists will get $300 apiece. All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Grist’s website. \nThe deadline for submission is June 13\, 2023\, by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time. \nInspiration: Imagine 2200 draws inspiration from Afrofuturism\, as well as Indigenous\, Latinx\, Asian\, disabled\, feminist\, and queer futurisms. The contest is also grounded in hopepunk and solarpunk — literary genres that uplift equitable climate solutions and continued service to one’s community\, even in the face of despair. \nWe are excited to see what you write and to dive into the worlds you create!

SUMMARY:F - Fractured Lit Prize for Flash Fiction on the Theme of: "Legends\, Myths & Allegories"
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to launch a new themed contest for our microfiction and flash writers. From February 20 to April 16\, 2023\, we welcome writers to submit to the Fractured Lit Legends\, Myths\, & Allegories Prize. (We would also love to see your ghost stories!) \nUsing these genre themes\, we’re looking for stories that scare as much as they resonate\, stories that help us discover the roots of desire and conflict\, that shimmer on the page\, that keep us reading and wondering long after the last period on the page. Transport us from the here and now to a new land of discovery\, a fresh way of being entertained\, a new way of embracing all of the ways we show our humanness. Fractured Lit is a flash fiction–centered place for all writers of any background and experience. \nWe’re thrilled to partner with Guest Judge Natalie Lima\, who will choose three prize winners from a shortlist. The first-place winner of this prize will receive $3\,000 and publication\, while the second- and third-place winners will receive publication and $300 and $200\, respectively. All entries will be considered for publication. \nGood luck and happy writing! \nGUIDELINES: \n\nYour $20 reading fee allows up to two stories of 1\,000 words or fewer each per entry—if submitting two stories\, please put them both in a SINGLE document.\nWe allow multiple submissions—each set of two flash stories should have a separate submission accompanied by a reading fee.\nPlease send flash fiction only—1\,000 word count maximum per story.\nWe only consider unpublished work for contests—we do not review reprints\, including self-published work (even on blogs and social media). Reprints will be automatically disqualified.\nSimultaneous submissions are okay—please notify us and withdraw your entry if you find another home for your writing.\nAll entries will also be considered for publication in Fractured Lit.\nDouble-space your submission and use Times New Roman 12 (or larger if needed).\nPlease include a brief cover letter with your publication history (if applicable).\nWe only read work in English\, though some code-switching is warmly welcomed.\nWe do not read anonymous submissions. However\, shortlisted stories are sent anonymously to the judge.

SUMMARY:F - The Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize
DESCRIPTION:Invisible Publishing is pleased to announce the inaugural Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize\, which will be awarded to a promising and unique literary fiction manuscript by a writer who has never had a full-length book (of poetry\, fiction\, or nonfiction) published. The selected manuscript will be published by Invisible Publishing in 2024–25. In addition to a $1000 advance against royalties\, the winning writer will receive a $3000 prize. \nInvisible is committed to publishing a diverse array of writers and presenting unique perspectives\, and we are looking for work that is deeply grounded in a sense of difference and the unexpected. Other than that\, we’re up for anything from holiday romances to new takes on the nineteenth-century whaling novel. With this in mind\, we strongly encourage LGBTQ2SIA+ writers\, Indigenous writers\, writers from marginalized communities\, and writers of colour to submit their work. \nThe Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize is awarded in collaboration with York University’s Book Publishing program and Dr. Matt Bucemi\, Assistant Professor of Book Publishing. York’s students will help Invisible’s staff to choose the winning manuscript and will offer their feedback on the initial edit. This is a chance for students to get an intimate look at the publishing process and to make a meaningful contribution to an exciting new project; once they have given their early input\, the project will be guided to completion by Invisible’s own team. The winning author will be given the opportunity to give a keynote talk and hold a Q&A with the York student community. \nPublisher Norm Nehmetallah on what makes the First Novel Prize so exciting: “Our mission is to publish wholly original books and to sustain literary communities of all sorts. This prize helps us fulfill that mission on several levels: we’ll discover new authors who deserve to have their voices broadcasted to the world\, bring excellent new books into the market\, and foster the next generation of publishing talent by showing students how the industry\, and independent publishing in particular\, works.” \nGuidelines: Authors must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents to submit. Otherwise\, submissions to the First Novel Prize should follow all of our existing submission guidelines. Agented submissions are welcome. The submission period for the inaugural prize runs from 9 January to 28 February 2023. The winner will be announced sometime in April.

We won’t reject a submission flat out for not following guidelines\, but we will frown the whole time we’re reading. \nAn insider tip for you all: We seek work that actively pushes boundaries\, that forces us to question traditions and tastes. If your work takes risks\, we want to read it. We like strong narratives that make us feel something and stories we haven’t seen before. To get an idea of the kind of work we look for\, please check out this page from our editors detailing what we look for in our submissions. \nWe also strongly recommend checking out a past issue of F(r)iction before submitting to our contests to get an idea of our general publishing aesthetic. We have several pieces available online\, but there’s nothing like holding a glossy\, full-color issue in your hands. You can check out all of our issues in our shop. \nWe accept work\, written in English\, from anywhere in the world—regardless of genre\, style\, or origin—and welcome speculative writing and experimental literature. Strange is good. Strange with a strong character arc is even better. Keep it weird\, folks.
