SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Primer: A quarterly periodical of the strange and the beautiful. Theme: Efflorescence
DESCRIPTION:Submissions for Vol. One\, Issue Five are open \n\nOur publication avidly encompasses broad fields – from literature to science\, history to music\, all disciplines are welcome. We’re simply guided by this question: how do beauty and strangeness collide? \nFor our fifth issue\, we’re approaching this inquiry through the theme of Efflorescence. Of renewal and rejuvenation\, of coming into one’s own maturation — the process of efflorescence is about surrendering to change and leaning into the burgeoning possibilities of the new. “A bursting into flower”\, an “act of blossoming out”\, it is to embrace desire and feel one’s beauty\, greatly. It is also\, however\, to be at a point of utter vulnerability. Budding shoots are fragile\, after all — they are susceptible to harsh winds and careless gestures that\, whether deliberately or unknowingly\, tear them clean or scythe them down. What does it mean to bloom\, for you? \nTake that in any direction: you could reflect on a nascent love for something new or your coming-of-age\, then and now; you could consider what you’ve left behind to start anew or the growing pains of who you’re developing into. All these\, and more\, are welcome in Vol. Two\, Issue Five. \n/ \nGuidelines\n\nPublication history: We seek previously unpublished works\nGenre: There are no restrictions in genre\nWord limits: We ask for prose pieces and dramatic works to be not more than approximately 1500 words (we are\, after all\, a primer!)\nMultiple submissions: We accept a maximum of four pieces per submission – with the exception of visual art\, for which the maximum is ten pieces per submission

Send us your best story where sex\, desire\, or lust lead to the undressing and undoing of those involved. \nWe’re looking for all the same dark fiction\, crime and noir as our usual submissions\, but with a target length between 1\,000 and 2\,000 words\, and aligned with the monthly submissions prompt (see below). We’ll read through the best\, choose the one story that shines brightest\, and publish it online the following month\, paying $25 per accepted story. \nAfter a year\, we’ll collect all twelve stories into a Stone’s Throw Anthology\, to be published alongside our other print issues. \nPLEASE NOTE — If you have been accepted within the calendar year for Stone’s Throw\, you are ineligible to submit again during that same calendar year. SUMMARY:N - THIS Magazine Seeking Submissions for the Culture Issue. Theme: The Arts Industry in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Culture Issue \nWe’re now accepting pitches for our annual Culture Issue! This year’s theme is the arts industry in Canada. We’d like to cover what’s going well\, what’s not going so well\, and how we’re funding our endeavours in these tough times. While we’re not looking for many profiles of artists themselves\, we are interested in highlighting work artists are engaging in to keep their fields alive and promote innovation right now. We’re really interested in telling stories that are happening across Canada\, from the east to the west to the North. Keeping the arts healthy in small towns is as important\, and sometimes more so\, as what happens in big city scenes. Please pitch us about whatever you’ve noticed that’s weird and wonderful in your local arts scenes\, updates on your long-favourite festivals and bands\, supports you’d like to see for artists — we’re into it all. \nWe’re seeking news\, arts and ideas stories\, and features. This includes our back page open letter and memoir and opinion columns. We publish Canadian residents only and accept queries (not completed manuscripts). We suggest familiarizing yourself with the magazine and previously published stories before pitching. For more details on the kinds of pieces we run\, see below. \nWe like stories that aren’t likely to be found anywhere else\, ideally with a social justice tie-in. In your pitch\, it’s always great to say why you want to tell this story now\, why you’re the one to tell it\, sources you plan to consult\, and any takeaways your piece will include for the reader. In other words\, what might people learn\, or start to learn\, from reading your story? \nPitches are due Thursday\, July 4\, 2024 and can be sent to Sarah Ratchford\, editor@thismagazine.ca. \nThank you for pitching This Magazine! We can’t wait to read your ideas. \nWriters’ Guidelines \nThis Magazine welcomes queries only\, not already written pieces. A good This Magazine article offers background and context to ongoing national issues\, a challenge to the mainstream media perspective\, or an important story that hasn’t been told elsewhere. Subject matter includes politics\, culture\, the arts\, social issues\, labour\, feminism\, mental health\, race/racism\, Indigenous issues\, and sexuality\, with a focus on quality writing and in-depth reportage. Please note: This Magazine publishes Canadian residents only \nBefore you submit anything to the magazine\, be sure you are familiar with its approach. Pay particular attention to writing style and content. Articles for This Magazine should have a journalistic approach\, and be written in language simple enough to be comprehensible to a high school student\, with enough research and insight to be interesting to a PhD. Assume that you’re talking to knowledgeable readers (because you are). We encourage writers to grapple with big ideas\, but they must be conveyed with wit and style\, avoiding artistic\, journalistic\, legal\, or academic jargon.

SUMMARY:PFN - Moss Piglet Zine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Tools
DESCRIPTION:Our theme is Tools. You might create work that’s inspired by the instruments in your garage\, or by those used in healthcare and dentistry\, in the arts and sciences\, in tailoring\, and in gardening. PC Magazine says that “virtually any program or utility that helps programmers or users develop applications or maintain their computers can be called a tool.”\n \nDEADLINE: Wednesday\, July 3\, 2024  Send to info@krazines.com. \nSubmissions of Stories\, Essays & Poems\nPlease send text submissions in .doc\, .docx or PDF formats to info@krazines.com. \nAs our publication is digest-sized\, we prefer short poems and prose pieces.  Your stories and essays may go up to 1\,000 words\, but anything beyond that total won’t be considered. \nYou may provide multiple submissions\, but don’t go crazy. Someone has to read all of the stuff that comes across our desk. \nWe’re OK with simultaneous submissions and previously published work. Just cite the place where your writing has previously appeared. \nIf you have a fancy title like Poet Laureate\, Writer-In-Residence\, or you have been knighted by a King or Queen\, we’d be happy to include that information in our publication. \nYou retain all rights to your work.

SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to the Sans. PRESS Garden Anthology. Theme: The Garden
DESCRIPTION:In the brightness of snow or in the rich colours of an orchard\, the world is blooming with tales to be told and life to be lived. There is deep pleasure\, sensual wonder – but also horrors untold\, and their roots might’ve grown tangled in the same patch of grass. \nFor our eighth anthology\, we want the stories that pick the fruit and take a daring bite; we want to watch the stains the juice leaves behind as it drips. We want to unpick the weaved tapestry of all that builds a garden – colours\, taste\, the senses\, life\, death\, regrowth; the flowers and the bugs. \nThe Garden is an anthology for stories that engage with the living world in all its glory and messiness. From blossom to decay\, stories can interpret the premise in any way; be as metaphorical or literal as you wish – just don’t be afraid to get a little dirt under your fingernails. \nWe are looking for stories inspired by our title – The Garden. All genres of writing are welcome; more than any specific story or style\, we want the emotional response the title evokes in you. \nIf you have previously submitted to our calls\, we recommend sending us a piece of work we have yet to read! We want to see the whole spectrum of your creativity\, so we’d love to see something new from you. \n  \n\n\n\n\nThe Rules\n1   One story per writer\, up to 5000 words (no minimum word count) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2   Make sure your name and personal information are not on the story file (only in the form!)\n\n\n\n\n\n3   Stories must be typed in readable font and size\, with the title as file name (ie. ShortStoryTitle.docx)\n\n\n\n\n4   Only submissions made through this form will be considered.\n\n\n\n\n\n5   Simultaneous submissions are okay\, but please inform us as soon as possible if you are selected elsewhere!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6  Submissions made with the use of AI will be disqualified.

SUMMARY:PFN - THEMA Seeking Submissions on: A New Routine
DESCRIPTION:ALL SHORT STORIES AND POEMS MUST RELATE TO THE PREMISE “A NEW ROUTINE” \nThe premise (target theme) must be an integral part of the plot\, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental. Fewer than 20 double-spaced typewritten pages preferred. Indicate premise (target theme) on title page. Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. Include self-addressed\, stamped envelope (SASE) with each submission. Rejected manuscripts unaccompanied by an SASE will not be returned. Response time: 3 months after premise deadline. Note: No handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNO READER’S FEE. \nNOTE: Previously published pieces are welcome\, provided that the submission fits the theme and that the author owns the copyright. \nMail to: THEMA\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747. \nOutside the US: email thema@cox.net \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem. \nCopyright reverts to author after publication. \nUnlike many publishers\, we prefer works submitted by the authors themselves\, without the involvement of an agent. \nNo handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNOTE: We do not accept e-mailed submissions EXCEPT from authors who live outside the U.S. \nFor those living outside the U.S.\, submit manuscript as an email attachment (readable by MSWord ― either as a DOC file or an RTF file)\, and include the following information on the title page: target theme\, title of work\, name of author\, email address and physical address. \n\n\n\n\nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. Subtlety is more creative.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Codhill Press Guest Editors Series. Theme: Motion and Stillness/Stillness and Motion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 submission period\, the theme is: Motion and Stillness/Stillness and Motion. The call looks for books that: start in one realm and end up somewhere else entirely; shift from confusion to understanding; explore the world around us and the movement of necessary change–and/or how we handle the need to pause and examine a world that increasingly spins faster; what we do in the moments after epiphany; the ways in which motion and stillness are inseparable. Importantly\, manuscripts might explore these points on personal\, communal\, national\, and/or global levels. \nGuest editors are selected from past award winners\, and serve a two-year appointment. Robert Krut\, who received the Codhill Award in 2018 for The Now Dark Sky\, Setting Us All on Fire (and subsequently also published Watch Me Trick Ghosts with the press) is currently in his second year\, and will select the manuscript. Also the author of This Is the Ocean and The Spider Sermons\, Krut is a long-time teacher of writing at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \nKrut expands on the press call by saying\, “Using a themed approach to submissions feels like a different way to find variety of fresh\, unique collections. Last year\, we received countless excellent submissions through this approach\, and I look forward to the work we receive through this new call.” \nSubmission Guidelines for the Codhill Press Guest Editor Series follow: \n\nAll submissions should be made through our submittable page.\nThis series has a reading period\, not a contest/competition. With your submission\, please tell us a little about yourself\, and share how your manuscript connects with the theme.\nManuscripts should be between 48-80 pages long\, not including front matter. Please include a table of contents; an acknowledgments page is welcomed but not required.\nThere is no reading fee for submissions.\nThe press is particularly interested in reading work by writers who have been historically underrepresented in\, and/or marginalized\, by traditional literary institutions.\nWe welcome submissions from both emerging and established writers.\nSubmissions will be accepted between May 1-June 30; the book selection will be announced by September 1\, with publication the following year.\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted; please contact the press immediately if the manuscript is no longer available.\nBooks will be published by Codhill Press and distributed by Codhill and SUNY Press; authors will receive 20 copies of the collection.

SUMMARY:F - Necessary Fiction Seeking Stories about: Dangerous Creatures
DESCRIPTION:This October\, we’re publishing spooky stories with the theme “Dangerous Creatures.” As the introduction to Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s seminal collection Monster Theory states: “We live in a time of monsters.” So send us your monsters—your cryptids\, your undead\, your aliens\, your un-human creatures\, your bodies of difference\, your destroyer of straightforward categories and binaries. Because stories will be published in October\, we ask that you do not send “this politician is a monster”-type of story; take us somewhere deeper and more thought-provoking. \nGuidelines:\nWe accept unpublished fiction up to 3\,000 words only. Simultaneous submissions are fine but multiple submissions are not. Please double space your submission. You can expect to hear back from us no later than mid-August.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Sinister Wisdom: A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal. Theme: Mad Dykes\, Queer Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Mad Dykes\, Queer Worlds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMad Dykes\, Queer Worlds\nEnds on Sun\, Jun 30\, 2024 11:59 PM \nWhat is Madness\, and how do we\, as lesbian/queer creatives\, wield it? Amid much feminist discourse around the figure of the “madwoman\,” mostly as an archetype to be avoided or\, in some instances\, appropriated\, in reaction to rational distress under violently cisheteropatriarchal conditions\, comparatively little discussion has focused on the lived experience of psychiatric survivorship\, iatrogenic harm\, and abuse under the sign of “mental illness” or psychiatric disability. Behind and beyond the figure of the madwoman\, or the specter of “hysteria\,” are the lived (sur)realities of Madpeople of all marginalized genders. \nThis issue of Sinister Wisdom seeks contributions by lesbian\, queer\, and/or trans people self-identified as Mad\, mentally disabled\, and/or psychiatric survivors. Following the portmanteaue coinages “transMad” (Cavar)\, “neuroqueer” (Walker\, Yergeau\, and Michaels-Dillon)\, and “neurotrans” (Smilges)\, Madness and (gender)queerness are deeply entangled and often inextricable from each other\, both as they manifest “inside” us and in our ways of relating to our words\, world(s)\, lovers\, and friends. \nWhat\, who\, and where are Mad dykes\, and how do we find each other in a world increasingly oriented toward cisheteronormative\, whitewashed wellness? What are the legacies and ongoing violences of queer/trans pathologization in our communities and beyond? How do we live as transMad people amid cissexist\, saneist attacks from the reactionary Right? And how do we share\, negotiate\, or conceal our experiences of trauma\, altered realities\, and unfamiliar access needs while also building community? \nPlease submit works of any\, all\, or no genres\, including reviews and interviews\, up to 5\,000 words\, and a short contributor biography between 25 and 125 words. We are also seeking illustrations and photographs (.jpg or .tif files only\, print resolution size at least 300 ppi). Please do not send previously published work.

SUMMARY:PN - Chicken Soup for the Soul Series Seeking: Dog Stories
DESCRIPTION:Dog Stories \nWe are thrilled to announce that we are now accepting stories for our dog topic that is to be released in 2025. Because of the popularity of this topic\, we do a new dog book approximately every eighteen months so here is another chance for you to share a story or two about the member of your family who just happens to walk on four feet! \nDogs have always been considered companions and playmates that brighten our days and enrich our lives. What would we do without them? They are also wonderful and amazing teachers. The lessons we learn from our canine friends come in all shapes and sizes\, just like they do. Tell us the new thing your canine friend has taught you. How smart she is or how she outsmarted you! How he made you smile. How she “rescued” you after you “rescued” her. How he brought your family closer together\, helped you find love\, inspired you to change something in your human life. Stories can be serious or humorous\, or both. We can’t wait to read all the heartwarming\, inspirational\, and hysterical stories you have about your dogs. \n***Please note: If you submitted a story or poem for a previous dog book and we DID NOT publish it\, here is your chance to submit it to us again. If you submitted a story and we DID publish it in a previous dog book\, please do not submit it. We will not publish it again. \nHere are a few ideas but we know you will come up with more on your own: \n– How does your dog improve your life?\n– How does your dog warm your heart and make you smile?\n– How did your dog show kindness to a human or another animal?\n– How did your dog teach you to put things in perspective and not take yourself so seriously?\n– How did your dog teach you to forgive and move on?\n– How did your dog teach you to live in the present\, and BE present?\n– The crazy things your dog does\n– The crazy things you do for your dog\n– Has your dog demonstrated a surprising degree of empathy or comprehension of a situation?\n– How did your dog teach you about kindness?\n– Does your dog act a certain way with one family member and a different way with another?\n– Did your dog get lost and\, by some unexplainable miracle\, return home?\n– Has your dog ever done something extremely embarrassing?\n– How did your dog teach you about humor?\n– Did you train him\, or did he train you?\n– Who rescued who?\n– Learning about loyalty and unconditional love\n– My dog seems almost human and can understand the things I’m saying or feeling\n– Does she talk back to you?\n– How my dog picked me\n– How my therapy dog has made a difference\n– How my dog changed my family\n– Your work at a shelter or rescue organization and have great stories from there \nRecipe for a Winning Chicken Soup for the Soul Submission\nA Chicken Soup for the Soul story is an inspirational\, true story about ordinary people having extraordinary experiences. It is a story that opens the heart and rekindles the spirit. It is a simple piece that touches our readers and helps them discover basic principles they can use in their own lives. These stories are personal and often filled with emotion and drama. They are filled with vivid images created by using the five senses. In some stories\, the readers feel that they are actually in the scene with the people. \nChicken Soup for the Soul stories are written in the first person and have a beginning\, middle and an end. The stories often close with a punch\, creating emotion\, rather than simply talking about it. Chicken Soup for the Soul stories have heart\, but also something extra—an element that makes us all feel more hopeful\, more connected\, more thankful\, more passionate and better about life in general. A good story causes tears\, laughter\, goose bumps or any combination of these. \nThe most powerful stories are about people extending themselves\, or performing an act of love\, service or courage for another person. \nGuidelines for a Chicken Soup for the Soul story\n\nTell an exciting\, heartwarming or funny story about something that has happened to you or someone you know. Your story should be written in the first person and should be about yourself or someone close to you.\nTell your story in a way that will make the reader cry\, laugh\, get goose bumps or say “Wow!”\nThe story should start “in the action” and draw in the reader. Do not start your story with an introduction about what you are going to say\, or end with a concluding paragraph about what you just said.\nDon’t be afraid to speak from the heart. Many people tell personal stories for the first time in our books\, and they find it to be a cathartic and productive experience. We do let you use a pen name for your story if you do not want to use your real name.\nDon’t try fancy moves with tenses. Writing in the present tense about something that happened in the past rarely works.\nKeep your story to 1200 words or less. Tighten\, tighten\, tighten!\nYour story must be true. No fiction\, no creative writing.\n\nWhat a Chicken Soup for the Soul story IS NOT:\n\nA sermon\, an essay or eulogy.\nAn “as told to” story written by you for someone else. If you ghost-write a story for someone\, we thank you for helping that person share his or her story. That person’s name will be listed as the author and he or she can acknowledge your help in the bio section.\nA term paper\, thesis\, letter or journal entry.\nAbout politics or controversial issues.\nA biography or testimonial.\nA journalistic article about a third party that reads like a newspaper article.\n\nGuidelines for a Chicken Soup for the Soul poem\n\nWe love poems that tell a story. A Chicken Soup for the Soul poem does the same job as a story. The reader goes away having learned your story\, just through poetry instead of prose.\nWe do not publish poems that do not tell a story.\nWe also do not publish poems that seem overly focused on rhyming and read more like greeting cards.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to époque press é-zine. Theme: Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Submissions are now open for our next é-zine theme ‘Belonging’. What does Belonging mean to you? It could be said that having a sense of belonging is one of our most basic needs\, a need for us to feel an affiliation for a particular group\, where we can feel secure\, included\, embraced and welcomed. It is about having an affinity for a place\, a situation or a set of common beliefs. It is something that binds us to other people and places\, fosters loyalty and shapes our own individual identities. But does this sense of belonging originate through self selected mythologising\, selective historical remembrance or blind adherence to what we are told we should believe? What consequences are there for those who do not belong\, for the outsider\, or for those who are desperate to belong and be accepted at all costs? As always the theme is open to interpretation. Submissions will close on 30th June 2024. \nwritten wordWe are open for submissions of poetry\, short stories and short essays. Please submit your work in an attachment to the email as a MS Word Document. Please accompany your submission with a short bio of no more than 100 words telling us a little bit about yourself\, the motivation behind your work and how it aligns to the theme. This can be attached as a separate MS Word Document or within the text of the email. Please email submissions@epoquepress.com and in the subject header state ‘ezine submission’\, name of theme and your name.

Tuck in! \nWhatever’s on your plate\, we can’t wait to sample your work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOURNAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:\n \n\n\nTo be considered for publication\, your work must be submitted via our online submission form\, here: https://fs20.formsite.com/john1420/zg9d1wbpmu/index \n\n\nThe submission form will ask you to attach your work as a Microsoft Word document. No other file types will be read by our editing team. \n\n\nPlease ensure the attached file bears the same name as the title of your work and that it does not contain your name or identify you in any way. \n\n\nWe ask that you format your submission using a plain\, size 12pt font (e.g. Arial\, Calibri or Times New Roman) with 1.5 line spacing. \n\n\nIn preparing your work for submission\, take note of any advertised themes for our up-coming editions. \n\n\nBe sure to edit and proofread your work thoroughly prior to sending it to inScribe. \n\n\nYou may submit as many works as you like\, but please complete a separate submission form for each title (also bear in mind that sending multiple works does not automatically improve your chances of publication – quality over quantity is far more important). \n\n\nBe sure to observe the maximum length of 3\,500 words per story (fiction and non-fiction) and 50 lines per individual poem. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:P - the ruth weiss foundation 2024 Poetry Contest: Haiku poems (fee-based)
DESCRIPTION:2024 ruth weiss Foundation Poetry Contest: Unleash Your Verse \n“I want my poems to evoke” — from the ruth weiss film\, ruth weiss The Beat Goddess trailer. \nDive into the Haiku Contest for 2024! Poets and dreamers\, this is your call to craft in the realm of haiku\, where each syllable bursts with meaning\, and every pause can capture a universe. \nWhy Haiku? Haiku distills poetry to its essence—17 beats\, a touch of nature\, a moment of Zen. Matsuo Basho captured it best: a silent pond\, a frog leaps\, and then silence again. It’s the art of minimalism\, where quiet truths resonate between the lines. \nThe Beat Generation’s Twist: Jack Kerouac saw haiku as a snapshot of life\, spontaneous and raw. He infused his verses with the rhythm of Bee Bop jazz\, transforming traditional haiku into quick\, sparse reflections of modern chaos. Similarly\, ruth weiss\, poet\, playwright\, artist\, and filmmaker\, painted her haikus across canvases\, blending jazz music and vibrant hues to evoke deep human emotions and experiences. \nTradition Meets Rebellion: We honor haiku’s rich legacy while daring to disrupt. Just as Kerouac and weiss reimagined traditional forms\, we invite you to either stand with the masters or chart new territories with your haiku. \nContest Categories and Prizes: \n• Maverick: $1\,200 \n• Emergent: $1\,000 \n• Youth (18 and under): $800 \n• School Grant (up to three schools): $900 \n• Founder’s Prize: $100 \n• Honorable Mentions: $200 each for the final ten winners (Total: $2\,000) \nPrize allocations may adjust depending on entry volume. \nHow to Begin? \nThe Essence of Haiku: Embrace kigo (season words) and kireji (cutting words)—the vital elements that ground your verse in the now and slice through to the heart. \nLive it: Write a haiku to a friend and share the inspiration. \nCan You Dig It? \nPlease send us your verses\, whether they cling to classic cliffs or dance on the edge of new waves. Join us in celebrating poetic legacy and innovation. Together\, let’s craft a tapestry of haiku that honors tradition and propels it into the future. \nPLEASE READ: \nCategories – choose one you belong to: \nMaverick – Ages 26 and up. The Maverick Award is open to all poets that embody the spirit of the maverick; whether published or not\, ruth weiss’s spirit is the exemplar of the Maverick. \nEmerging – Between ages 18 and 25. Emergent poets include a wide range of writers –those that exude a passion for writing. ruth weiss championed emerging poets throughout her long life as a bell-weather writer watching others evolve. \nYouth – Aged 18 and below to age 15. Share your love of writing and creativity while you explore the poet ruth weiss. \nMake sure your poem has never been published before. \nIf you win\, you agree for us to be able to publish your poem on our website. \n\n[Leave blank – add poem on the next step ‘application form’] \nMake sure your poem has never been published before. \nAll types of haiku are acceptable\, not just the formal. \n\nIf you win\, you agree for us to be able to publish your poem on our website.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Volume 7 of Shift: A Publication of MTSU Write. Theme: Bending\, Blurring\, & Breaking Genre (NPF)
DESCRIPTION:SHIFT Issue 7: Bending\, Blurring\, & Breaking Genre \n“All great works of literature either dissolve a genre or invent one.” -Charles J. Shields \nThe ability to organize things into neat little boxes & categories is something we love to do––genre is one such example. However\, people rarely fit so neatly into the boxes we are put in. Our identities & ways of knowing can be messy\, fraught\, complicated\, & language-transcending. Overtime\, our ideas of what genre is & what it can be are starting to align more closely with who we know ourselves to be\, too. \nConsider Walt Whitman’s creation of free verse poetry\, or Truman Capote’s unconventional blending of journalism & non-fiction novel writing for his book In Cold Blood. For SHIFT volume 7\, we ask you to place yourself in this tradition. Lean into ambiguity & leave us guessing. Toe the line between two worlds. Send us your favorite works that defy genre & conventional exceptions. Send us your poem that reads like a story\, your flash fiction that feels like a scene straight out of a play––hell\, maybe even a recipe that reads like a poem! Send us your Both/And. \nVOLUME 7 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES \nGeneral Guidelines: We do not accept previously published work. We do not accept work with song lyrics or any other copyrighted material that doesn’t fall under fair use or isn’t in the public domain. \nFormatting your manuscript: Do not submit PDFs—only Word documents. We prefer that all manuscripts be in 12-point type in any of the standard fonts (Times New Roman\, Cambria\, Calibri\, etc.). Number pages sequentially with page numbers positioned at the bottom center of the page and keep margins at 1”. \nSince we are bending\, breaking\, and blurring genres\, the following guidelines may be taken with a grain of salt\, but please do not create extra work for our small editing team. \nSubmissions of fiction-ish and creative non-fiction-ish work should be double-spaced. Poetry-ish submissions may be single-spaced. All lines of poetry-ish work should have a hard return at the end to preserve intended line formatting. Single space lines of poetry-ish pieces\, but include an extra line between stanzas. All play-ish need to follow proper screenplay format or they will automatically be rejected. Here’s a helpful link for your reference: https://ptfaculty.gordonstate.edu/lking/CPF_play_formatting2.pdf \nInclude a cover page with the title of the piece and author’s contact information (name\, email address\, address\, and telephone number). All work should be submitted with a bio that includes the name you wish to be included as your byline for your piece. \nSimultaneous submissions: MTSU Write wants every writer to have the greatest possible chance at acceptance. Therefore\, we accept multiple submissions from one writer. You may submit work in up to three genres. Please follow the guidelines for each genre listed below when submitting. \nSubmission fees: MTSU Write is a non-profit organization. We do not charge a fee for submissions. Our objective is to simply encourage literary excellence and creativity.  Writers whose work is accepted will receive one contributor’s copy. \nWORD COUNT GUIDELINES \nAlthough we are thrilled to see how you bend\, break\, and blur genres\, we are only human. Thus\, we must cap word counts for practical reasons. \nFiction and Short Story-ish: Flash fictionish pieces should be approximately 400-1\,000 words. Short storyish submissions may not exceed 5\,000 words. We accept any genre from literary fiction to sci-fi. Double-space the text of the manuscript. \nCreative Non-fiction-ish: Submissions of creative non-fiction should not exceed 5\,000 words. We accept personal essays\, essays on writing technique and process\, memoir excerpts\, travel writing\, journalistic essays\, etc. \nPoetry-ish Poetry submissions may be up to four pages in length and writers may submit up to four pieces of poetry. We accept poetry of all forms and genres\, but no translations. \nPlay-ish: Keep play-ish submissions to 10 minute or one-act forms. Follow the standard stage-play format when submitting. Here’s a helpful link for your reference: https://ptfaculty.gordonstate.edu/lking/CPF_play_formatting2.pdf \nIf these guidelines are a little too bendy\, broken\, or blurred for you\, feel free to shoot us your questions at shift@mts.edu \nFor more information about our mentoring program\, visit www.mtsu.edu/write For more information about SHIFT and to see past issues\, visit www.shift-write.com

SUMMARY:F - Myths\, Gods & Immortals Anthology Series Seeking Submissions on Circe and Anansi
DESCRIPTION: Flame Tree are bringing you a brand new gorgeous hardcover series brimming with myths and short stories. \n  \nDiscover the mythology of humankind through its heroes\, characters\, gods and immortal figures. Myths\, Gods & Immortals brings together the new and the ancient\, familiar stories with a fresh and imaginative twist. Each book brings back to life a classic mythological or folkloric figure\, with completely new stories alongside the original tales. New and emerging writers from open submissions reveal hidden themes\, casting fresh perspectives on well-known stories\, alongside specially commissioned text on the origins and the cultural background of the mythology. We’ve already closed submissions for the first two books in the series\, Medusa and Odin\, where stories are still under consideration. We’re now opening up submissions for the next two books\, Circe and Anansi. \n \n\nCirce\nEnchantress\, goddess\, witch\, predatory seductress… Inevitably\, Circe has been best-known in these terms\, through the male gaze of Homer\, Hesiod et al.\, as interpreted by readers and storytellers until today. Rarely does the classic literature give us a rounded view of a woman subject to the same flaws and emotions as the rest of us: jealousy\, desire\, unrequited love; her witchcraft is perhaps not so much dreadful as awe-inspiring and led by nature. What we know of her story is piecemeal\, from many sources. This enriching collection will bring together new stories and ancient origins\, offering a wider perspective on the whole life of the enigmatic\, enchanting Circe. Stories submitted for consideration need to explore new or expanded angles to the character: have her follow alternative paths\, present different viewpoints\, give deeper background\, counter the patriarchal narrative and male gaze\, or perhaps pursue story lines that are hinted at in the original tales and poetry. \nSubmissions to: Circe@flametreepublishing.com \n  \nTerms:\n\nMultiple submissions are fine but must be in separate emails.\nSimultaneous submissions are fine but you must have the right to license your story in an anthology.\nFor accepted stories we pay Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) rates of 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories\, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints.\nWe will aim to read each story and confirm its status within 4 months of the submission deadline.\nPayment for the chosen stories will be made within 30 days of the final advertised publication date (see our website flametreepublishing.com for details)\, although some may be paid earlier than that.\nSubmission does not imply the right to publication. Each story will be read and assessed by the selection panel.\nLet us know in your submission email whether your story would be a reprint or is currently unpublished.\n\nImportant Notice about Submissions and Guidelines\nWe’re always looking for better ways of working so we’ve tweaked our submission process to allow us to read more stories\, and spend more time assessing the balance of our books. So follow these rules to avoid your story getting lost in our system! \n\nSubmissions must use the dedicated email address.\nThe subject line of the email must be the story title.\nThe file with the story must be attached to the email (.docx\, .doc or .rtf format).\nThe name of the file must match the name in the subject line.\nIf submitting more than one story\, please submit one story per email.\n\nOther useful tips for a more successful submission:\n\n\nThe file name of the submission must be the story name only.\nPlease just use spaces between words in the title (not _ or – ).\nIf the story name starts with A or The\, please use it at the beginning of the file name.\nIf you’d like to add some details about the story\, confirm if it’s new or a reprint\, or add a short bio of yourself\, please add to the body of the email not as an attachment.\nStory length is most likely to be successful at 3\,000-4\,000 words\, but we will still read stories slightly outside this range.\nIf submitting a story that has recently been submitted to us for consideration to another anthology\, please state this in the submission email.\nDeadline for submissions is 23rd June 2024.

Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases that contain a kireji\, or “cutting word”\, 17 on (phonetic units similar to syllables) in a 5\, 7\, 5 pattern\, and a kigo\, or seasonal reference. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as senryū. \nHaiku originated as an opening part of a larger Japanese poem called renga. These haiku written as an opening stanza were known as hokku and over time writers began to write them as stand-alone poems. Haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century. \n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind: \nFor haiku inspiration\, look closely at everything around you in nature\, at home\, at school\, and at work. Write your draft of a haiku\, letting yourself be free and creative. Then ask the following questions about your haiku to help you improve them.\n \n\nHow long is your haiku? It’s usually good to write in three lines of about 10 to 17 syllables. In Japanese\, you will want to stay with 5-7-5 sounds (‘mora’). In English\, haiku don’t have to be in the pattern of 5-7-5 syllables.\nSee this link if you want to know more. \nThe following questions are much more important to observe:\nDoes your haiku name or suggest one of the seasons—spring\, summer\, fall\, or winter? In Japanese\, a kigo or “season word” tells readers when the poem happens\, such as saying “tulips” for spring or “snow” for winter. This is one of the most important things to do in haiku.\nFor our contest this year\, you want to give it a Spring theme!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind (continued): \n\nDoes your poem make a “leap\,” by having two parts? In Japanese\, a kireji or “cutting word” usually cuts the poem into two parts (never three). It’s not just having two parts that matters\, though. Rather\, it’s the implication in the relationship of the two parts that matters. Giving your poem two often fragmentary parts is also one of the most important goals in haiku.\nIs your haiku about common\, everyday events in nature or human life? To help you do this\, describe what you experience through your five senses.\nDoes your poem give readers a feeling? It can do this by presenting what caused your feeling rather than the feeling itself. So others can feel what you felt\, don’t explain or judge what you describe.\nIs your poem in the present tense? To make your haiku feel like it’s happening right now\, use the present tense.\nDid you write from your own personal experience? When you write other kinds of poetry\, you can make things up\, but try not to do that with haiku. Memories are okay\, though.\nHow did you capitalize or punctuate your poem? Haiku are usually not sentences (they’re usually fragments)\, so they don’t need to start with a capital\, or end with a period.\nDoes your haiku avoid a title and rhyme? Haiku are not like other poems\, which may have these features. Haiku don’t have titles and rarely rhyme.\n\n(adapted from Michael Dylan Welch’s excellent blog: https://www.graceguts.com/essays/haiku-checklist) \nAnother source worth reading\, with some more historical and stylistic information is  HAIKU: A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN 5-7-5  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease contact: haiku@ejca.org

SUMMARY:N - Carcanet Press Open Call. Theme: Lives & Letters
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nCarcanet has a rich list of prose titles entailing critical volumes\, essays\, biographies and eccentric texts of various kinds. A close familiarity with the list will help in determining whether a proposal is likely to prosper in this highly selective area of Carcanet’s activity. A 5000 word extract and a publishing rationale are welcome. \nCarcanet will consider work sent in PDF form to Submissions@carcanet.co.uk. Please include an email and provide a digital address for our response. If you are an individual subscriber to PN Review\, please indicate this in your covering e-mail. \nThe Editors’ decision is final. Given the volume of submissions we receive\, it is not possible for us to offer feedback on work submitted. We discourage simultaneous submissions. \nCarcanet’s Lives and Letters list is various and eccentric. Proposals can be drawn from the Carcanet backlist itself or can entail work new to the list. Issues of copyright should be addressed in any proposal. Neglected English-language writers from around the Anglophone world and writers in translation will be considered. A 1000 word extract from the introduction and up to 20 pages of text are welcome.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to the Lifespan Series. Theme: Death
DESCRIPTION:Death – Lifespan Vol. 12\n\n\nSubmissions for Death Lifespan Vol. 12 HAVE OPENED. \nSubmissions close 20th June 2024. \nFrom 2021 through to mid-2024\, Pure Slush has been conducting a 12-volume anthology series\, looking across the Lifespan. \nThis has been a unique opportunity to contribute works taking characters across the arc of their whole lives\, whether prose or poetry\, fiction or non-fiction. \nOr alternately\, to create unlinked works. \nDeath is the final volume in this anthology series. \nYour Death submission must be: \n\noriginal\, so previously unpublished online or in print (so that includes authors’ websites and blogs)\n150 word minimum limit for fiction and non-fiction\, stories and essays / maximum 1000 words. (That’s for each story / essay: maximum number of prose pieces you can submit is 3.)\n80 word minimum limit for poetry / maximum 1000 words. (That’s for each poem: maximum number of poems you can submit is 5.)\nmust include something about death and dying.\n\nYou must be minimum 18 years of age to submit. \nWe prefer submissions to be made through Submittable (scroll below) and much prefer Word.docx to PDFs or other alternatives. \nIf you have any questions\, please email edpureslush@live.com.au. \nTo submit\, click here. Please include the word DEATH\, plus your name and the title of your submission\, and the word count. (Please note: word counts do not include titles or your name.) \nPLEASE NOTE: if you are submitting more than one poem\, story or essay\, we really prefer they are all included on one document. So if you have 5 poems or 3 stories to submit\, please include them on one document\, and thus make one submission\, rather than 5 submissions (one for each poem) or 3 submissions (one for each story). \nIf you are new to Pure Slush\, please include a brief bio or profile of yourself.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Young Ravens Literary Review. Theme: Sound and Melody
DESCRIPTION:YRLR Issue 20 Call for Submissions\nExploring Sound & Melody \n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Issue 20\, we are exploring the themes of sound and melody. We are inspired by Robert Frost:\n“He would declare and could himself believe\nThat the birds there in all the garden round\nFrom having heard the daylong voice of Eve\nHad added to their own an oversound\,\nHer tone of meaning but without the words.” \n—From “Never Again Would Birds’ Song Be the Same”\nIdeas we would love to see explored include: \n\nWhat is the most frightening sound you’ve ever heard?\nWhat is the most glorious sound you’ve ever heard?\nHow is nature the ultimate musician?\nDo you remember the first song that ever struck a chord in your soul?\nWhat do you suppose the last word to ever be spoken by a human will be?\nCan a body in motion be a melody\, too?\nHow can silence sometimes be the loudest sound of all?\nWhat sounds soothe your soul? From small arias like the clink of a spoon while stirring coffee\, or the roll of a marble over the ground\, to grand hymns\, like thunder?\nWhere do you go\, or what do you do\, to escape the noise of your own consciousness?\nHow do you find harmony in the chaotic clamor of humanity?\n\nWe accept fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry of all flavors\, from free verse to found. We are also interested in submissions that include raven artwork. \n\nSubmission Guidelines:\n\nAll texts should use 12-point New Roman font and be double spaced. Poetry may be single spaced. Text file attachments may be submitted in .doc\, .docx\, or .rtf. \n\nFiction and Nonfiction: Entries should not exceed ten pages in length. Limit of 2 entries per submission. \n\n\nPoetry: Limit of 5 poems per submission. \n\nDo not submit to more than 2 categories at the same time. \nPlease include proper MLA citations for all quotations. \nPlease note that we do not accept previously published work or AI generated material\, and neither are we interested in profanity\, gratuitous violence\, or erotic material. Just let us know as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. \nResponse time:  \n2 months on average.  \nPayment:  \nNo. At this time we do not offer payment for submissions. We take First Electronic Publishing Rights and reserve the right to keep your work in an online archive. \nElectronic submissions:  \nYes.  \n\nSend all submissions to youngravensliteraryreview@gmail.com.\n\n\nSpecify your submission genre and name in the subject line of the email. SUMMARY:PFN - carte blanche magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Play"
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ISSUE 49 “PLAY”\nIt has been a dark and challenging few years for many of us. Hustle culture is celebrated and plowing through our work days can leave us exhausted. Sometimes we need to take a break from the seriousness of day-to-day life and binge-watch a favourite Marvel Universe show or indulge in some variation of Cards Against Humanity with our family and friends. \nThe theme for our upcoming issue 49 is ”Play.” We are interested in your narrative and poetic experiments\, odd stories\, humorous pieces\, weird fiction\, and the quirky. We ultimately leave “Play” up for your interpretation. Have fun! \nWe invite creators to submit previously unpublished pieces in the following genres: fiction\, poetry\, creative nonfiction\, translations (French to English)\, photography\, and comics for carte blanche issue 49\, “Play.” \ncarte blanche acknowledges the intersectionality of individuals’ lived experiences and aims to provide a welcoming and safe space for racialized and marginalized voices. We encourage and welcome submissions by individuals who identify as LGBTQ2S+\, BIPOC\, disabled\, and those who live with mental health challenges or neurodivergence. \nGENERAL GUIDELINES\nSimultaneous submissions: We accept simultaneous submissions. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are sending your piece elsewhere and withdraw your submission via Submittable if it is accepted somewhere else. \nUnpublished submissions: We do not accept submissions that have been previously published\, including on personal websites and social media. \nFrequency of submissions: We encourage you to submit to carte blanche no more than once a year unless solicited by an editor. \nRights: We ask for first world serial rights and the right to archive your work on the website. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication. In the case of translated pieces\, you must already have received permission from the original French publisher to translate the piece prior to submitting your translation to us. \nPayment: carte blanche pays an honorarium of $75 for each published piece. We hope to increase the amount in the future.
