SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Please See Me. Theme: Harmony
DESCRIPTION:We are OPEN for Submissions through July 22\, 2024\nfor the Fall 2024 Issue #15 – Harmony\nGeneral Guidelines\nWe seek previously unpublished\, creative\, and high-quality work in the form of poetry\, creative nonfiction/essays\, and fiction/short stories/flash fiction. Patients\, students\, family members\, caregivers\, nurses\, physicians\, healthcare consumers\, artists\, mental health providers\, physical therapists\, writers\, clergy—all of us will be patients one day and all are welcome to submit work. We are especially looking for content from vulnerable populations and those who care for them; content that connects us with every community\, makes us feel something\, helps us see illness\, wellness\, health\, or the healthcare environment differently\, and inspires equality in healthcare and the world. \nTheme Guidelines: Harmony\nHarmony in health or healthcare is a wonderful thing when it occurs. Finding that physical and mental equilibrium where mind and body are in sync are those periods in our lives akin to flow–we feel great\, we are thinking clearly and everything is going well. How much our lives are spent in harmony with ourselves? With those we love? What does the search for physical harmony look like for you? For someone you love? Or the search for harmony in our mind? How does illness–physical or mental–leave us in disharmony? \nFor providers: What does harmony in the care you deliver look like? In the relationships with your patients or colleagues? In working with care teams or trying to implement new technology to deliver advancements in care? What does cultural harmony look like in healthcare? \nThese are the stories in all forms–creative nonfiction\, short stories\, and poetry–we are curating for Fall Issue #15. \nGenre Guidelines\nPoetry\nPlease submit a maximum of three poems at a time. If you submit more than three\, we can only read the first three. \nFiction\nPlease submit short stories no more than 4\,000 words in length. Flash fiction\, up to 1\,000 words\, is welcome and encouraged. Submissions should be double-spaced in 12pt Times Roman or other serif font with 1″ margins. We will look at excepts of longer works on a case-by-case basis; please query us with a description of your project before submitting if greater than 4\,000 words. \nCreative Nonfiction\nPlease submit nonfiction pieces no more than 4\,000 words in length. Submissions should be double-spaced in 12pt Times Roman or other serif font with 1″ margins. We will look at excepts of longer works on a case-by-case basis; please query us with a description of your project before submitting if longer than 4\,000 words.

SUMMARY:F - CultureCult Press Seeking Submissions for the "Mono no aware" Anthology
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe invite writers to contribute their short and longer fictions to CultureCult’s upcoming anthology\, “Mono No Aware“ \n“Mono no aware” is a Japanese term that captures the deep awareness of the transient nature of life and beauty\, evoking a gentle sadness at their passing. It is the bittersweet realization that all things are fleeting\, and it invites us to appreciate the ephemeral moments that make life beautiful. Stories in this anthology should resonate with the theme of transience\, evoking the delicate beauty found in moments that are destined to fade. \nTHE FINAL DATE OF SUBMISSION IS JULY 21\, 2024 \nCome up with your own story or feel free to take inspiration from one of our writing prompts below: \n1) When I fell for a young artist’s ephemeral installations in nature\, I should’ve known that her creations always get reclaimed by the elements\, sooner than later. \n2) We are on a quest to photograph the fleeting bloom that appears once every hundred years atop a mountain which is (almost) impossible to climb. \n3) After accidentally attaining the keys to eternal life\, an ordinary man becomes acutely aware of the fleeting nature of life and the world around him \n4) An intelligent species that only lives for a day. When a researcher stumbles upon one of the greatest discoveries in science\, her ideas about life as we know it is about to change. \n5) She obsessively travels from one moment of grief in time to another. He keeps trying to lead the time machine to moments of beauty\, but she refuses to give up control. \n6) A soldier in a bygone war writes a series letters to a loved one\, aware that each letter could be their last. \n7) Two lovers separated by memory meet once a year under a cherry blossom tree\, not knowing each meeting is both their first and their last. \n8) As a family leaves their beautiful ancestral home during a genocide\, a man explains to his son how change has been the only constant in human history \nWE ARE ACCEPTING: \nShort Story: (between 1500-8000 words) Send no more than ONE short story \nFlash Fiction: (between 100-1500 words) Send no more than TWO flash fictions \nWe are accepting TRANSLATED WORKS as well. Submission of translated works must be accompanied by a statement declaring that the translator has obtained the author’s permission and their publisher’s\, if required. \nSimultaneous Submissions are welcome but the author must inform us by e-mail as soon as the submitted piece is accepted elsewhere. Pieces cannot be withdrawn once CultureCult Press informs the author of its acceptance for publication. \nWe consider reprints but generally do not publish them unless they are absolutely exceptional. \nAt present\, we are unable to pay our contributors. \nEach contributor shall receive a COMPLIMENTARY DIGITAL COPY of the anthology as soon as it publishes. \nManuscripts should directly be sent to CultureCultMagazine@gmail.com \nEmails must have the subject line “Submission for MONO NO AWARE“ \nEach piece MUST be attached with a short bio (preferably within 100 words) and\, if possible\, a photograph of the author to go along with publication. \nPlease submit your files in the following formats: .doc /.docx /.txt. DO NOT submit PDFs.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Shallot: Journal of Mental Health\, Art\, and Literature Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Divergent
DESCRIPTION:The Shallot is open to artists with lived mental and emotional health experiences. \nVol. 3\, No. 2 – Prompt: “Divergent”\nTwo paths diverge in a yellow world; I am the one less traveled by\, they say. \nThey’re the type of person who walks upside down on the ceiling\, it makes sense to them and always has\, never mind that it moves away from pesky traditional expectations. They sort paint chips alphabetically\, then by color; they get dressed feet first; they love bearded dragons. \nNeurodivergent. To think differently\, with the brain trotting well-worn paths exclusive to the individual. More than a buzzword. A state of being; a state of risk; a state of safety. \nStanding by the stove\, they appear absent-minded\, stirring a stockpot\, its aroma swirling as it rises. They concoct their recipe backwards\, starting with flavor or the sauce and somersaulting it back to an acceptable protein. This will be a fusion\, unexpected and delicious\, elevating the plate in an unexpected way. To some a gut punch\, to some a handshake. They like a plate that does something interesting; unexpected. \nOur mental health intersects with the various factors of our identity. Our differences make us strong and can bring us together\, if we let them draw us into observation and conversation. We can share lived experience\, neurodivergent and not\, to render a more beautiful world. \nFor this edition\, send us a work that diverges from the norm or is somehow divergent. It may represent neurodivergence\, fusion\, exploration\, or something important or representative to you. \nSubmission Guidelines\n\nTwo written submissions per artist at this time. You can submit multiple pieces in the same entry.\n\n\n\nNonfiction\nFictionSubmissions\nPoetry\n\n\nWritten work should be no longer than 1000 words.\n\n\n\n\nNO submission fees.\n\n\nBio\n\nAlways include a third-person author/artist/professional bio. The bio should be at least 1-2 sentences and up to 50 words. 450-500 characters maximum. More extended bios will not be accepted.\n\nNote: There is a question for a more extended bio in this round of submissions. We may or may not continue this forward.\n\n\nWe will publish the bio\, your pronouns\, and links to your social media that you include.\nWe reserve the right to make grammatical changes while copyediting\, but you will get to approve the final version.\n\n\nQuestions\n\nAnswer all required questions in the submission system.\nYou must be 18 years of age or older to enter.

SUMMARY:NP - Call for Submissions to Bad Day Book. Theme: Parenting
DESCRIPTION:No matter how you look at it\, some days are just bad days. Often times you are able to look back on those days and laugh about what happened. The Bad Day Book is here to help you take a step back and realize one day you may laugh about what is happening. Or\, it might even help you realize that compared to others\, maybe it isn’t really as bad of a day as you thought. \nWhat are the rules for story and poem submissions? \n\nStories should be about bad things\, but that are still funny. We are not looking to include tragic or heart breaking stories. This book is to get others to laugh\, gasp\, and cringe.\nStories MUST be personal and true events that have already happened. No AI bot stories. No creative writing. No fiction.\nWe prefer stories under 1200 words. We will consider works up to 1500 words\, but it is rare to have works picked that are over the preferred 1200.\nStories should be written with first person narration and told in past tense.\nDo not include any vulgarity\, controversial topics\, politics\, sex/drugs\, drinking\, illegal activities\, curse/crass/crude words. This is a family friendly publication.\nThough many bad days are caused by a “villain”\, whether it be a person/company\, do not name drop or tear down others. Focus the story on what happens directly to you and not the people on the other end. We will not publish works that are written to tear others down\, even if they have done shady stuff. You may refer to others as friends\, coworkers\, family member\, pen names or a vague descriptor.\nStories should include a beginning\, middle\, and an end. Begin straight in the action; no introductions to the story are necessary. Make sure you conclude your story\, but please do not end the story with any recap. It’s always best to end with a laugh.\nOnly submit a story once to each theme you would like it considered for. (Stories submitted more than once per theme will be deleted.)\nPoems must tell a story.\nWe do not pay for submissions\, only for published works.\nWe do not accept all submitted stories and poems to be published. Though not all submissions will be published in books\, some will be accepted for social media publication.\nIf your story or poem is selected to be published in one of our books or social media\, you will be asked to sign a permission release contract. The contract will allow The Bad Day Book rights to publish your story.\n\nYou maintain copyright under your name\nLicense will grant The Bad Day Book exclusive rights for 12 months\, with permission to use story in later editions as well. (Not exclusively-Written permission from author will be required for other uses)\nAfter the 12 months author may self-publish in any form (book\, blog\, etc) without making any changes to story or referencing The Bad Day Book.\nAfter 12 months author may publish with any third-party any rewritten variation of this story/life experience. No reference to The Bad Day Book required.\n\n\nPlease do not contact us to ask for an update about your story unless you need to know whether we are considering it because another publisher is interested in it too.\nIf your story or poem is not selected for any of the variations you have requested\, you will be notified if we would like to hold the submission for a different book edition or if The Bad Day Book with be passing on your story or poem.\nWe will not consider previous published stories or poems\, with one exception being previously published stories or poem from personal blog publications.\nAuthor name can be shown as first name only\, first and last name\, or a pen name if you would prefer to not use your real name\n\nIf you have already submitted a story or poem and are looking to change any story details or contact information please email mystory@thbaddaybook.com \nWe do not pay for submissions. We only pay for stories and poems that are published in books or on social media.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Deronda Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Trust
DESCRIPTION:The Deronda Review is primarily a poetry magazine\, but we are also open to short fiction\, essay\, and memoir. For the magazine itself\, prose submissions should be a maximum of 500 words. However\, longer prose works may be published on our homepage. Poetry submissions should consist of up to five poems\, either in ONE Word document or in the body of the email. Only works with special graphic requirements should be sent in a .pdf. We are open to reprints and simultaneous submissions; if your submission is simultaneous\, please tell us so. We recommend that  you read an issue (see “Archives” section)\, and consider our statement on the aims and character of the magazine\, here. \nWe publish one issue annually.  Our present reading period is from May 15 to July 15\, 2024.  Send to Esther Cameron\, derondareview at g mail\, or to Mindy Aber Barad\, maber4kids at yahoo period com.  \nFor the 2024 issue\,  our main theme will be Trust.  As we wrote in our email calling for submissions: \n Our theme\nThis time is “trust\,” and what we have in mind\nIs chiefly trust among us\, fellow-humans.\nWe know\, of course\, that some cannot be trusted\,\nThat there are various forces in this world\nWhich are not friendly\, of which we must beware;\nAnd that in order to get out of bed\nEach morning\, it is helpful if we hold\nSome trust\, that in the end all will be well\nThat there’s a Power which plans all for good.\nBut to perceive where trust is possible\nAmid the thickets of our human plane\,\nTo set one’s foot upon a bridge that’s offered\nWhich may conduct us toward a distant safety –\nThat is an art perhaps too little studied. \nFor modern life has trained us to rely\nLess upon one another than on systems\nIn which we find our places\, hopefully\nBy merit and desert\, according to\nInalienable rights. We trust they work\nFor good\, that justice can be found within them\,\nAnd where such trust is not betrayed too often\,\nThe people are well governed\, and are happy.\nBut where\, through machinations of the strong\nOr working of impersonal forces guided\nBy laws not moral\, but mechanical\,\nThe systems seem to turn against the beings\nBy and for whom they were at first designed\,\nThen it is well if those who can be trusted\nCan find each other and make common cause\nTo rectify the system\, or at least\nEndure\, outlast the evils of its breakage.\nOn this we have long thought\, nor is such thinking\nOriginal with us; see\, on our homepage\,\nThe document “Intelligent Community\,”\nWhich brings some old advice to present times. \nWe hope these thoughts inspire or bring to mind\nPoems of yours.

SUMMARY:PF - Bronze Bird Books Love Poetry Anthology Seeking: Expressions of love with a seasonal arc
DESCRIPTION:To create a cohesive and deeply heartfelt book\, we’re primarily looking for expressions of romantic or Éros love. \nAs much as possible\, this anthology will tie various expressions of love to a seasonal arc. So\, whether it’s pumpkin spice latte dates in autumn or nostalgic recollections of summer love on a Coney Island boardwalk\, we welcome a specific sense of atmosphere. In past collections\, we’ve received many submissions about grief or the loss of a partner; we’ll consider those for this project\, too\, if the poem ultimately celebrates the love that existed or persists. \nPublication Notes / FAQ: \n\nJuly 15th is the deadline for submissions.\nIf your submission is accepted for publication\, we will notify you by August 1st. If you haven’t heard from us by then\, consider it a pass. (Since email deliverability can be a complex ordeal with many variables\, we recommend that you periodically check your spam folder in case we don’t directly reach your inbox.)\nSubmitted work should not have been previously published; needless to say\, it should also be original\, true to your experience\, and not written entirely by a bot!\nWe generally prefer poetry without complicated formatting. Longer lines of poetry don’t always fit in our standard 6” x 9” trim size. If it’s a prose poem\, it’s OK. Otherwise\, anticipate that very long lines may spill over if you exceed 68 characters and consider rebalancing your line breaks.\nWe are also open to prose poetry/flash fiction if it is thematically relevant. We will consider anything up to 1\,000 words.\nAll submitted works should have titles. We include a table of contents and need to refer to your work in some way.\nContributors grant First Publication Rights to the Bronze Bird Books love anthology. All rights revert to the author after publication. We will work to promote this collection and all contributors therein\, with bios and promotional links included at the end of the manuscript. All accepted contributors will receive a digital copy of the collection; the press does not have the resources to provide complimentary print copies.\nAfter you complete the Google Form\, you should automatically receive a copy of it. That email copy may alter the appearance/formatting of your submission; however\, rest assured that we have received the text exactly as you inputted it.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Primer: A quarterly periodical of the strange and the beautiful. Theme: Efflorescence
DESCRIPTION:Submissions for Vol. One\, Issue Five are open \n\nOur publication avidly encompasses broad fields – from literature to science\, history to music\, all disciplines are welcome. We’re simply guided by this question: how do beauty and strangeness collide? \nFor our fifth issue\, we’re approaching this inquiry through the theme of Efflorescence. Of renewal and rejuvenation\, of coming into one’s own maturation — the process of efflorescence is about surrendering to change and leaning into the burgeoning possibilities of the new. “A bursting into flower”\, an “act of blossoming out”\, it is to embrace desire and feel one’s beauty\, greatly. It is also\, however\, to be at a point of utter vulnerability. Budding shoots are fragile\, after all — they are susceptible to harsh winds and careless gestures that\, whether deliberately or unknowingly\, tear them clean or scythe them down. What does it mean to bloom\, for you? \nTake that in any direction: you could reflect on a nascent love for something new or your coming-of-age\, then and now; you could consider what you’ve left behind to start anew or the growing pains of who you’re developing into. All these\, and more\, are welcome in Vol. Two\, Issue Five. \n/ \nGuidelines\n\nPublication history: We seek previously unpublished works\nGenre: There are no restrictions in genre\nWord limits: We ask for prose pieces and dramatic works to be not more than approximately 1500 words (we are\, after all\, a primer!)\nMultiple submissions: We accept a maximum of four pieces per submission – with the exception of visual art\, for which the maximum is ten pieces per submission

SUMMARY:N - THIS Magazine Seeking Submissions for the Culture Issue. Theme: The Arts Industry in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Culture Issue \nWe’re now accepting pitches for our annual Culture Issue! This year’s theme is the arts industry in Canada. We’d like to cover what’s going well\, what’s not going so well\, and how we’re funding our endeavours in these tough times. While we’re not looking for many profiles of artists themselves\, we are interested in highlighting work artists are engaging in to keep their fields alive and promote innovation right now. We’re really interested in telling stories that are happening across Canada\, from the east to the west to the North. Keeping the arts healthy in small towns is as important\, and sometimes more so\, as what happens in big city scenes. Please pitch us about whatever you’ve noticed that’s weird and wonderful in your local arts scenes\, updates on your long-favourite festivals and bands\, supports you’d like to see for artists — we’re into it all. \nWe’re seeking news\, arts and ideas stories\, and features. This includes our back page open letter and memoir and opinion columns. We publish Canadian residents only and accept queries (not completed manuscripts). We suggest familiarizing yourself with the magazine and previously published stories before pitching. For more details on the kinds of pieces we run\, see below. \nWe like stories that aren’t likely to be found anywhere else\, ideally with a social justice tie-in. In your pitch\, it’s always great to say why you want to tell this story now\, why you’re the one to tell it\, sources you plan to consult\, and any takeaways your piece will include for the reader. In other words\, what might people learn\, or start to learn\, from reading your story? \nPitches are due Thursday\, July 4\, 2024 and can be sent to Sarah Ratchford\, editor@thismagazine.ca. \nThank you for pitching This Magazine! We can’t wait to read your ideas. \nWriters’ Guidelines \nThis Magazine welcomes queries only\, not already written pieces. A good This Magazine article offers background and context to ongoing national issues\, a challenge to the mainstream media perspective\, or an important story that hasn’t been told elsewhere. Subject matter includes politics\, culture\, the arts\, social issues\, labour\, feminism\, mental health\, race/racism\, Indigenous issues\, and sexuality\, with a focus on quality writing and in-depth reportage. Please note: This Magazine publishes Canadian residents only \nBefore you submit anything to the magazine\, be sure you are familiar with its approach. Pay particular attention to writing style and content. Articles for This Magazine should have a journalistic approach\, and be written in language simple enough to be comprehensible to a high school student\, with enough research and insight to be interesting to a PhD. Assume that you’re talking to knowledgeable readers (because you are). We encourage writers to grapple with big ideas\, but they must be conveyed with wit and style\, avoiding artistic\, journalistic\, legal\, or academic jargon.

SUMMARY:PFN - Moss Piglet Zine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Tools
DESCRIPTION:Our theme is Tools. You might create work that’s inspired by the instruments in your garage\, or by those used in healthcare and dentistry\, in the arts and sciences\, in tailoring\, and in gardening. PC Magazine says that “virtually any program or utility that helps programmers or users develop applications or maintain their computers can be called a tool.”\n \nDEADLINE: Wednesday\, July 3\, 2024  Send to info@krazines.com. \nSubmissions of Stories\, Essays & Poems\nPlease send text submissions in .doc\, .docx or PDF formats to info@krazines.com. \nAs our publication is digest-sized\, we prefer short poems and prose pieces.  Your stories and essays may go up to 1\,000 words\, but anything beyond that total won’t be considered. \nYou may provide multiple submissions\, but don’t go crazy. SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to the Sans. PRESS Garden Anthology. Theme: The Garden
DESCRIPTION:In the brightness of snow or in the rich colours of an orchard\, the world is blooming with tales to be told and life to be lived. There is deep pleasure\, sensual wonder – but also horrors untold\, and their roots might’ve grown tangled in the same patch of grass. \nFor our eighth anthology\, we want the stories that pick the fruit and take a daring bite; we want to watch the stains the juice leaves behind as it drips. We want to unpick the weaved tapestry of all that builds a garden – colours\, taste\, the senses\, life\, death\, regrowth; the flowers and the bugs. \nThe Garden is an anthology for stories that engage with the living world in all its glory and messiness. From blossom to decay\, stories can interpret the premise in any way; be as metaphorical or literal as you wish – just don’t be afraid to get a little dirt under your fingernails. \nWe are looking for stories inspired by our title – The Garden. All genres of writing are welcome; more than any specific story or style\, we want the emotional response the title evokes in you. \nIf you have previously submitted to our calls\, we recommend sending us a piece of work we have yet to read! We want to see the whole spectrum of your creativity\, so we’d love to see something new from you. \n  \n\n\n\n\nThe Rules\n1   One story per writer\, up to 5000 words (no minimum word count) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2   Make sure your name and personal information are not on the story file (only in the form!)\n\n\n\n\n\n3   Stories must be typed in readable font and size\, with the title as file name (ie. ShortStoryTitle.docx)\n\n\n\n\n4   Only submissions made through this form will be considered.\n\n\n\n\n\n5   Simultaneous submissions are okay\, but please inform us as soon as possible if you are selected elsewhere!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6  Submissions made with the use of AI will be disqualified.

SUMMARY:PFN - THEMA Seeking Submissions on: A New Routine
DESCRIPTION:ALL SHORT STORIES AND POEMS MUST RELATE TO THE PREMISE “A NEW ROUTINE” \nThe premise (target theme) must be an integral part of the plot\, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental. Fewer than 20 double-spaced typewritten pages preferred. Indicate premise (target theme) on title page. Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. Include self-addressed\, stamped envelope (SASE) with each submission. Rejected manuscripts unaccompanied by an SASE will not be returned. Response time: 3 months after premise deadline. Note: No handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNO READER’S FEE. \nNOTE: Previously published pieces are welcome\, provided that the submission fits the theme and that the author owns the copyright. \nMail to: THEMA\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747. \nOutside the US: email thema@cox.net \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem. \nCopyright reverts to author after publication. \nUnlike many publishers\, we prefer works submitted by the authors themselves\, without the involvement of an agent. \nNo handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNOTE: We do not accept e-mailed submissions EXCEPT from authors who live outside the U.S. \nFor those living outside the U.S.\, submit manuscript as an email attachment (readable by MSWord ― either as a DOC file or an RTF file)\, and include the following information on the title page: target theme\, title of work\, name of author\, email address and physical address. \n\n\n\n\nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. SUMMARY:N - HerStry Seeking Stories about Grief
DESCRIPTION:Grief\nWe’re steeped in grief. Especially now\, in this (post?) COVID world\, when so many of us have lost so much. But this isn’t a theme about COVID grief (though you can certainly write about that)\, this is a theme about the grief that is with us now\, the grief that was with us long ago\, and the grief that grows with us. Don’t be afraid to bring us broken\, heavy stories. We can handle it. \n** HerStry is always happy to share stories anonymously—if your story is selected for publication\, simply let your editor know you would not like your name shared ** \nTHE RULES:\n\n\nAll stories must be true and about you. \n\n\nStories must follow the theme in some way\, interpretations can be wide. \n\n\nStories must stay between 500–3\,000 words. \n\n\nDocuments should be double spaced\, 12Pt font with 1 inch margins. \n\n\nSubmissions must be in .doc or .docx form—we do not accept PDFs. \n\n\nStories are read blind. Please DO NOT put any identifying material on your manuscript. Manuscripts that don’t follow this rule will be automatically disqualified without being read. We realize personal essays may contain your name; a first name is fine. \n\n\nPlease include a third person bio. Cover letters are fine\, but not necessary (we don’t read them\, we’re more interested in what you’ve written). \n\n\nPlease submit only once per theme. \n\n\nWe do not accept previously published stories. \n\n\n\n\n\nHerStry centers the experiences of women identifying persons. We’re looking for work from bigender/polygender persons\, cisgender women\, intergender persons/intersex persons\, nonbinary persons/gender non-conforming persons\, transgender women/transfeminine persons\, two spirit. In other words\, if you are a cis man\, please refrain from submitting.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Codhill Press Guest Editors Series. Theme: Motion and Stillness/Stillness and Motion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 submission period\, the theme is: Motion and Stillness/Stillness and Motion. The call looks for books that: start in one realm and end up somewhere else entirely; shift from confusion to understanding; explore the world around us and the movement of necessary change–and/or how we handle the need to pause and examine a world that increasingly spins faster; what we do in the moments after epiphany; the ways in which motion and stillness are inseparable. Importantly\, manuscripts might explore these points on personal\, communal\, national\, and/or global levels. \nGuest editors are selected from past award winners\, and serve a two-year appointment. Robert Krut\, who received the Codhill Award in 2018 for The Now Dark Sky\, Setting Us All on Fire (and subsequently also published Watch Me Trick Ghosts with the press) is currently in his second year\, and will select the manuscript. Also the author of This Is the Ocean and The Spider Sermons\, Krut is a long-time teacher of writing at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \nKrut expands on the press call by saying\, “Using a themed approach to submissions feels like a different way to find variety of fresh\, unique collections. Last year\, we received countless excellent submissions through this approach\, and I look forward to the work we receive through this new call.” \nSubmission Guidelines for the Codhill Press Guest Editor Series follow: \n\nAll submissions should be made through our submittable page.\nThis series has a reading period\, not a contest/competition. With your submission\, please tell us a little about yourself\, and share how your manuscript connects with the theme.\nManuscripts should be between 48-80 pages long\, not including front matter. Please include a table of contents; an acknowledgments page is welcomed but not required.\nThere is no reading fee for submissions.\nThe press is particularly interested in reading work by writers who have been historically underrepresented in\, and/or marginalized\, by traditional literary institutions.\nWe welcome submissions from both emerging and established writers.\nSubmissions will be accepted between May 1-June 30; the book selection will be announced by September 1\, with publication the following year.\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted; please contact the press immediately if the manuscript is no longer available.\nBooks will be published by Codhill Press and distributed by Codhill and SUNY Press; authors will receive 20 copies of the collection.

SUMMARY:F - Necessary Fiction Seeking Stories about: Dangerous Creatures
DESCRIPTION:This October\, we’re publishing spooky stories with the theme “Dangerous Creatures.” As the introduction to Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s seminal collection Monster Theory states: “We live in a time of monsters.” So send us your monsters—your cryptids\, your undead\, your aliens\, your un-human creatures\, your bodies of difference\, your destroyer of straightforward categories and binaries. Because stories will be published in October\, we ask that you do not send “this politician is a monster”-type of story; take us somewhere deeper and more thought-provoking. \nGuidelines:\nWe accept unpublished fiction up to 3\,000 words only. Simultaneous submissions are fine but multiple submissions are not. Please double space your submission. You can expect to hear back from us no later than mid-August.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Sinister Wisdom: A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal. Theme: Mad Dykes\, Queer Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Mad Dykes\, Queer Worlds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMad Dykes\, Queer Worlds\nEnds on Sun\, Jun 30\, 2024 11:59 PM \nWhat is Madness\, and how do we\, as lesbian/queer creatives\, wield it? Amid much feminist discourse around the figure of the “madwoman\,” mostly as an archetype to be avoided or\, in some instances\, appropriated\, in reaction to rational distress under violently cisheteropatriarchal conditions\, comparatively little discussion has focused on the lived experience of psychiatric survivorship\, iatrogenic harm\, and abuse under the sign of “mental illness” or psychiatric disability. Behind and beyond the figure of the madwoman\, or the specter of “hysteria\,” are the lived (sur)realities of Madpeople of all marginalized genders. \nThis issue of Sinister Wisdom seeks contributions by lesbian\, queer\, and/or trans people self-identified as Mad\, mentally disabled\, and/or psychiatric survivors. Following the portmanteaue coinages “transMad” (Cavar)\, “neuroqueer” (Walker\, Yergeau\, and Michaels-Dillon)\, and “neurotrans” (Smilges)\, Madness and (gender)queerness are deeply entangled and often inextricable from each other\, both as they manifest “inside” us and in our ways of relating to our words\, world(s)\, lovers\, and friends. \nWhat\, who\, and where are Mad dykes\, and how do we find each other in a world increasingly oriented toward cisheteronormative\, whitewashed wellness? What are the legacies and ongoing violences of queer/trans pathologization in our communities and beyond? How do we live as transMad people amid cissexist\, saneist attacks from the reactionary Right? And how do we share\, negotiate\, or conceal our experiences of trauma\, altered realities\, and unfamiliar access needs while also building community? \nPlease submit works of any\, all\, or no genres\, including reviews and interviews\, up to 5\,000 words\, and a short contributor biography between 25 and 125 words. We are also seeking illustrations and photographs (.jpg or .tif files only\, print resolution size at least 300 ppi). Please do not send previously published work.
