DESCRIPTION:Submissions.\nThis issue will explore our connections to the natural world through gardens. Topics can include the magic of the place\, its profusion of colors\, scents\, sounds\, healthy vegetables\, enthusiastic gardeners\, and similar topics. Settings may include organic farms\, horticulture gardens\, flower gardens or farms\, cultivated landscapes\, backyard gardens\, centers for agronomy\, the agrochemical industry\, places of ecologically sustainable agriculture\, Zen gardens\, moon gardens\, memorial public gardens\, and other similar settings. From the geometric shapes of gardens in European castles\, to the gardens of the Victorians on the wilder side\, gardens could be seen as an expression of individuality and culture. Gardens can serve as settings we venture into to work out our imaginations. This issue will explore the beauty and truth related to gardens through essays\, short stories\, and poetry. \nPlease submit your original\, previously unpublished short fiction\, creative nonfiction\, or poetry. DESCRIPTION:SPRING 2025 // Kith & Kin \nThe phrase kith and kin—which means friends and relatives—is decidedly folksy\, and definitely brings to mind more rural sensibilities. Long ago\, “kith” could also refer to knowledge\, or to a homeland—how are they all related? Do Americans think of themselves as one people anymore? What should we make now of the adage “Out of many\, one”? What makes a friend or neighbor\, and why are they important? “Kin\,” of course\, is still in use as a stand-in for “family.” Who do we consider family? Do non-human animals count? Do plants and insects? Will AI chatbots really replace human interaction? \nWHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: \n\n\nFiction\, including experimental fiction and erotica\, is welcome. Please send pieces of 500 to 2\,000 words. \n\n\nPersonal essays or articles for our “Switchbacks” section that relate points of inflection in a person’s life that have taken them to an unexpected and new place. Please send full pieces for consideration. \n\n\nEssays\, book reviews\, provocations\, cultural criticism and think pieces of 500 to 3\,500 words (We’re themed\, so make sure you tell us when you submit why it fits the theme). You can write about big issues\, movies\, TV\, books\, art exhibitions or anything else that has sparked a good idea. Email editors@friendsjournal.org\n\nIf there’s one topic we can simultaneously talk about both too little and too much\, it’s money. This is as true for Quaker meetings as it is for families. Our January 2025 issue opens the floor for discussion on “How Meetings Use Money.” (Friends Journal last considered this theme six years ago for our October 2018 issue\, before the pandemic turned the economy on its head and forever changed the landscape of employment.) There are many angles that Friends could discuss. We’ve brainstormed some ideas—but feel free to surprise us with your own take on the topic! \nWhere does our money come from? \nA lot of Quaker wealth is locked up in endowments started by “dead Quaker money”—wealth bequeathed by Quakers of centuries past. What responsibilities do we have to their original donors or the people they may have exploited? Friends benefited from Indigenous land displacement\, a century of slavery\, and the labor of workers in the industrial revolution. Later Quaker enterprises have been augmented by capital from these initial wealth sources. \nHow are we researching\, honoring\, and acknowledging these debts? What kind of forensic accounting can we do to understand the myriad sources of our inherited wealth? \nHow do we support our meeting? \nQuaker wealth continues to change in the twenty-first century. Most of the well-known historic Quaker businesses have been bought and sold over\, and there are fewer truly wealthy Quaker families. Many Friends today work in service or knowledge fields. How have these changes affected the finances of our denomination and the ability to live out our values in the workplace? As individuals and families\, how do we decide how much to donate to to our Friends meeting or church and how do we balance that out with other donations? \nHow do we support our members? \nThere’s sometimes an assumption that Quakers are all financially secure and well-off\, but that’s often not the case and it can shift throughout a lifetime. Rising inflation rates in many countries are squeezing bank accounts and the high costs of childcare in the United States are forcing families to change how they work. Many long-term trends were accelerated by COVID and lockdown. Manufacturing has continued to move overseas. Many once-stable jobs have been replaced by part-time\, subcontracted employment with little security\, even in academia. The rise of the so-called gig economy (typified by uber and doordash) and the proliferation of warehouse jobs (such as Amazon) employ millions at low salaries\, often seasonally. Many Friends have been affected by these changes. \nHow do we look out for and support people in our community who are struggling financially? Do we even notice their distress in our assumptions? Do we help with food\, clothing\, or money to help bridge over rent or mortgage payments? How can we ensure that financially strapped Friends are invited to Quaker events with costs? \nWhere does the money go? \nAn activist Friend of mine used to point to the nice furnishings in our meetinghouse and chuckle about how many good things we could fund in the community if we sold some of it off. Has your meeting liquidated any of its property or longstanding endowments for community service or for reparations of historic injustices? \nIt’s sometimes said budgets reflect an organization’s deepest values. Do meeting budgets reflect that? When we do find ourselves with extra funds from a bequest or windfall\, where do we spend it? How do we balance needs for our meeting community (building upkeep and repair\, scholarships for Friends)\, and when and how do we give it to others in our community? Where do we invest our corporate savings? Who decides how we spend money in our meetings? What kind of ministries are we supporting? What can we let go of? \nThere are a lot of meetinghouses mostly empty these days\, perhaps even more so after the pandemic pushed many to move to virtual or hybrid worship. Could we ever decide we don’t need all of these spaces? Or could we go further and sell our properties and start meeting at a rented space like a firehall or library once a week? How do we decide on the best use of our financial resources?

The survivors of torture we support come to the UK as refugees and often struggle to find the words to explain their journey\, feelings and the trauma they experienced\, as they cope with language barriers in a new country. In some stories\, the readers feel that they are actually in the scene with the people. \nChicken Soup for the Soul stories are written in the first person and have a beginning\, middle and an end. The stories often close with a punch\, creating emotion\, rather than simply talking about it. Chicken Soup for the Soul stories have heart\, but also something extra—an element that makes us all feel more hopeful\, more connected\, more thankful\, more passionate and better about life in general. It did turn out to be a lot of fun in the end. It was so much fun\, in fact\, that I’m getting a whole new batch of judges this time. Same setup as before\, maybe we’re not qualified\, but I’ve never let that stop me. The reading will be blind and fair. It didn’t matter last time\, but let’s cap the stories at 2\,000 words. No minimum. We’ll close early if we get 150 submissions\, but that seems unlikely. \nNo reprints\, please. Simultaneous submissions are ok\, and the zine will only be in print form\, so I don’t know if you count anything in it as ‘published’. Also\, I’m not asking for exclusive rights\, just the rights to include it in the zine. If you want to make my life a little easier\, remove your name from your submission ahead of time. The judging will be blind and if you can’t or won’t take your name off your submission\, I can do it. It’s not grounds for disqualification\, just an extra step. \nI don’t feel like anyone should have to say it\, but don’t send in anything written by\, or with the assistance of\, AI like ChatGPT\, Gemini\, or whatever else is out there. DESCRIPTION:Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize — $2000 Awarded\n\n\n\nEnds on Thu\, Nov 7\, 2024 11:59 PM \n\n\n\nThe reading period for the Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize runs from September 21 to November 7 (LC’s birth anniversary to death anniversary).\n$1000 will be awarded to a poem that explores the intersection of love\, faith & sex. Four finalists will each be awarded $250.\n\nABOUT THE PRIZE\nPoet\, novelist\, singer/songwriter\, artist\, music producer\, Buddhist monk\, Leonard Cohen has won countless hearts. \nI found his music six years ago and haven’t listened to much else since. Now every morning when I drop my daughter off to preschool\, she and I sing along to “Suzanne” on the way. Having spent countless hours with the Leonard Cohen Archive at the University of Toronto\, I’m in awe of the devotion he had for his craft\, blackening page after page. \nHis ability to blend the sacred and the profane\, the spiritual and the sensual remains unmatched. We are indebted to him for bridging the world of literature with the world of music. \nA couple of times in concerts\, he sang this two-liner: “no\, it wasn’t any good\, there’s no reason why you should remember me” while having given us a million reasons to remember him. \nWe hope this will push people who are aware of Cohen’s genius as a musician to turn to his poetry. It gives us deep honor to name this prize after the one and only Leonard Cohen and carry a part of his infinite legacy on our slim shoulders. \nAs Leonard would say\, forgive the poverty of these words for they do not reflect the abundance of our gratitude. \n— Karan Kapoor\, Editor-in-Chief\, ONLY POEMS \n  \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nSend us up to 3 pages of poetry. \nEach poem starts on a new page. \nIn the spirit of Leonard Cohen\, we ask that your poems deal in some way with the intersections of Love\, Faith\, & Sex. \nWe only accept previously uncurated work. \nWe love cover letters and would prefer knowing whose work we are reading.
