Four finalists will each be awarded $250.\n\nABOUT THE PRIZE\nPoet\, novelist\, singer/songwriter\, artist\, music producer\, Buddhist monk\, Leonard Cohen has won countless hearts. \nI found his music six years ago and haven’t listened to much else since. Now every morning when I drop my daughter off to preschool\, she and I sing along to “Suzanne” on the way. Having spent countless hours with the Leonard Cohen Archive at the University of Toronto\, I’m in awe of the devotion he had for his craft\, blackening page after page. \nHis ability to blend the sacred and the profane\, the spiritual and the sensual remains unmatched. We are indebted to him for bridging the world of literature with the world of music. \nA couple of times in concerts\, he sang this two-liner: “no\, it wasn’t any good\, there’s no reason why you should remember me” while having given us a million reasons to remember him. \nWe hope this will push people who are aware of Cohen’s genius as a musician to turn to his poetry. DESCRIPTION:Submissions are now open for Issue 13: Superstition / Divination until November 30!\n\nHere we are – Issue 13. For this\, we chose a theme that embraces all that the number thirteen can mean. Specifically\, we call upon Superstition / Divination as our official theme\, to conjure all the ways that 13 toys with our relation to reality as a number of numeric dualities. It appears as a luck charm or a cursed omen depending on context. \nWe avoid the number 13 on elevators\, we feel a chill on a Friday the 13th; something just a little ominous looms – the potential for a correlation. The superstition adhered to the number 13 follows us\, whether or not we fully believe in its unlucky aura\, is it worth it to chance it? But what if…? \nOr\, is 13 misunderstood? As it represents karma\, tests of life\, and spirituality… in grappling with the abstract\, we seek something tangible. \nDivination is about correlation; how wisdom arises from pairing and juxtaposition. We peer into relationality and conjure meaning. The cosmos aids in this understanding\, letting pieces fall into alignment\, be it chaotic or planned. What follows the laws of nature and what refuses to? How do we read logic from the randomness of the universe? How does it speak to us through relationality? \nMoreover\, how are the ways that Superstition / Divination lean into the space of seeking understanding through the unknown; what about correlation across seemingly unconnected events? We look unto the expanse of divination\, the ancient divinatory spirit of our ancestors that pulled upon common chords of humanity and shared superstition journeys through time that reveled in communal beliefs. We embrace the historical nature of superstitions and divination as a tool to support communities in need. \nFor Issue 13\, we want your Superstition / Divination. What ways do you hold onto beliefs that guide your actions? How do you divine meaning from the world? Are superstition / divination two elements of the same essence? \nShow us your process\, your revelations. Share a spread or write into the correlation of cards or objects. Write into faith and belief that guides or binds you. We are here anticipating your revelations of the universe. How is it speaking to you? Scaring you? Lend us your divining wisdom. \n\nWhat We Look For:\nHere at Tiny Spoon\, we are especially interested in experimental work\, although not exclusively. DESCRIPTION:For this special issue\, we’re looking for works of short\, flash\, or micro-fiction and creative nonfiction on the theme of “aperture.” In photography\, the aperture is the space through which light enters the camera. In architecture\, apertures are commonly windows or doors: points of access or boundary between the interior and exterior spaces. An aperture can be a point of connection\, or control. It can be an opening\, a gap\, a portal\, or chasm. An aperture can be a wound. A point of entry\, or of no return. In fiction\, we’re looking for braided flash or micro snapshots\, surrealist\, realist\, magically realist\, speculative\, or even auto-fiction; fiction encountering the aperture of the void\, fiction exploring grief\, or borders\, or time travel\, or birth. Fiction examining the artist\, the photographer\, the painter. In creative nonfiction\, we’re looking for lyric essays as snapshots\, or memoirs as explorations of experience oriented around a single entry point. We’re looking for hybrid works\, works of ekphrasis\, essays\, and more. Wildly creative interpretations of the theme of “aperture” are welcome\, as are the explicitly literal – send us your discoveries\, musings\, glimpses\, and memories as stories. Please ensure work is submitted in a legible\, serif font (think Times New Roman or Garamond). We’re not too fussed about size or spacing. Please nothing longer than 3500 words. It is a story that opens the heart and rekindles the spirit. It is a simple piece that touches our readers and helps them discover basic principles they can use in their own lives. These stories are personal and often filled with emotion and drama. They are filled with vivid images created by using the five senses. In some stories\, the readers feel that they are actually in the scene with the people. \nChicken Soup for the Soul stories are written in the first person and have a beginning\, middle and an end. The stories often close with a punch\, creating emotion\, rather than simply talking about it. Chicken Soup for the Soul stories have heart\, but also something extra—an element that makes us all feel more hopeful\, more connected\, more thankful\, more passionate and better about life in general. A good story causes tears\, laughter\, goose bumps or any combination of these. \nThe most powerful stories are about people extending themselves\, or performing an act of love\, service or courage for another person. \nGuidelines for a Chicken Soup for the Soul story\n\nTell an exciting\, heartwarming or funny story about something that has happened to you or someone you know. The superstition adhered to the number 13 follows us\, whether or not we fully believe in its unlucky aura\, is it worth it to chance it? But what if…? \nOr\, is 13 misunderstood? As it represents karma\, tests of life\, and spirituality… in grappling with the abstract\, we seek something tangible. \nDivination is about correlation; how wisdom arises from pairing and juxtaposition. We peer into relationality and conjure meaning. The cosmos aids in this understanding\, letting pieces fall into alignment\, be it chaotic or planned. What follows the laws of nature and what refuses to? How do we read logic from the randomness of the universe? How does it speak to us through relationality? \nMoreover\, how are the ways that Superstition / Divination lean into the space of seeking understanding through the unknown; what about correlation across seemingly unconnected events? We look unto the expanse of divination\, the ancient divinatory spirit of our ancestors that pulled upon common chords of humanity and shared superstition journeys through time that reveled in communal beliefs. We define emerging writers as anyone who has no more than one full-length book (this includes\, poetry\, fiction\, nonfiction\, comics\, etc).  If you are making a transition into another genre\, please let us know in the cover letter. DESCRIPTION:If we’re being honest with ourselves\, the story really would have gone like this… \nThere are always things we wish for\, things we hopped for or regrets we have about certain moments in our lives. With ourselves and with people we love. In January we’re looking for your stories about what you would have done if you were being honest with yourself. What you wish you had done or what you regret never having done. What is a truth about yourself that you’ve never yet shared? We are looking for your raw honest words\, even if they are harsh\, even if they paint you in a bad light. Even if they hurt. \n** HerStry is always happy to share stories anonymously—if your story is selected for publication\, simply let your editor know you would not like your name shared ** \nTHE RULES:  \n\nAll stories must be true and about you.\nStories must follow the theme in some way\, interpretations can be wide.\nStories must stay around 3\,000 words.\nDocuments should be double spaced\, 12Pt font with 1 inch margins and in an easy to read font. DESCRIPTION:theme: wild goose chase \nAre you pursuing an unattainable treasure or leading a horse down a winding road? Are the geese in the office park menacing you? Or are they protecting their goslings? Whether you’re a Mercutio who has lost a battle of wits or are racing toward a goal in V-formation\, send us prose and poems for Wild Goose Chase. Throw together some unwieldy words that refuse capture and submit the soft down of your tender moments to us. \nWe publish based on a rotating theme that lasts for three months. See below for the latest premise and the cutoff dates. We love surprising interpretations of our themes; we’re less keen on literal interpretations. That being said\, if we receive a piece that isn’t – in some way – reflective of the theme we’ll gnash our teeth and shake our fists at the heavens\, and then send you a wimpy rejection letter. Don’t make us do that – we hate that.  Length of the work: our sweet spot is between 150 to 300 words. Anything over or under\, we’ll be less psyched on. Poems? Let’s try to keep it under 25 lines\, bbz\, and no more than 3 poems per submission. We accept re-prints so long as you own the rights. SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to Stone's Throw. Theme: Opulence
DESCRIPTION:The holidays are over\, and it’s time to get back on the straight and narrow. Easier said than done\, though. This month\, we want stories about overindulgence. Opulence. Living beyond your means. Whether that’s money\, drugs\, generosity\, or viciousness\, we want stories about people who overdo it\, and what happens when they realize they’re in a hole they can’t hope to fill. \nStone’s Throw will open for submissions from the first of every month. We’re looking for all the same dark fiction\, crime and noir as our usual submissions\, but with a target length between 1\,000 and 2\,000 words\, and aligned with the monthly submissions prompt (see below). We’ll read through the best\, choose the one story that shines brightest\, and publish it online the following month\, paying $25 per accepted story. \nAfter a year\, we’ll collect all twelve stories into a Stone’s Throw Anthology\, to be published alongside our other print issues. \nPLEASE NOTE — If you have been accepted within the calendar year for Stone’s Throw\, you are ineligible to submit again during that same calendar year.
