SUMMARY:P - Pedestal 89: Call For Submissions
DESCRIPTION:As editors of Pedestal Magazine\, we intend to support both established and burgeoning writers. We are committed to promoting artistic diversity and celebrating the voice of the individual. \nPedestal Magazine does not accept previously published work\, unless specifically requested; however\, we will accept simultaneous submissions\, if so noted. Please inform us immediately if your submission is accepted elsewhere. We do not accept submissions by regular mail. Neither do we accept email submissions. We now accept all work through Submittable.com. Please do not submit more than once per reading cycle. \nCurrent and Upcoming Guidelines:\nFor Pedestal 89\, scheduled for publication in December 2021\, editors will be accepting submissions of poetry. No restrictions on theme\, style\, length\, or genre. Please submit up to five (5) poems and include all work in a single file.\nOpen for submissions: November 1 – November 28\nPayment: $50 per accepted poem. \nPedestal Magazine publishes reviews of full-length poetry collections (we are no longer able to review chapbooks). Most of our reviews are selected and handled in-house by staff reviewers; however\, if you are interested in submitting a title for possible review\, or would like to review a specific title\, please query at pedmagazine@carolina.rr.com. \nHow to Submit Your Writing:\nAs mentioned above\, Pedestal Magazine does not accept previously published material\, unless specifically requested. The editors ask for first rights to any piece selected. At the time of publication\, all rights revert back to the author/artist; however\, Pedestal Magazine retains the right to publish the piece(s) in any subsequent issue or anthology\, whether in print or online\, without additional payment. Should you decide to republish the piece elsewhere\, we ask that you cite Pedestal Magazine as a place of previous publication and provide Pedestal Magazine’s web address. \nStarting with Issue 84\, Pedestal Magazine increased payment for accepted work from $40 to $50 per poem. In addition\, pay rates have been increased for editors and reviewers. Also\, because the amount of submissions received has dramatically increased over the last few submission cycles\, we are encountering rising administrative costs\, including fees related to use of the Submittable and MailChimp platforms. For these reasons\, we have implemented a $3 processing fee for all submissions. \nWe do our best to respond to submissions in 4-6 weeks. Please do not query regarding status of a submission until at least 8 weeks have passed. All questions pertaining to submissions should be addressed to the editor at pedmagazine@carolina.rr.com.

SUMMARY:N - Speak For Ourselves Essay Competition - Educational Institution Students
DESCRIPTION:The contest is open to Canadian citizens aged 25 and younger who are enrolled in or are attending an accredited secondary or post-secondary institution in 2021 or 2022. \nOTTAWA\, ON (September 27\, 2021): For Canadian students and young people who are frustrated that they don’t see themselves represented in the national discussion on issues of race\, culture and politics\, here is a great opportunity to finally be heard. \nIn Canada\, the dominant mainstream media narrative seems to offer a single\, simplistic\, politically-biased view to represent all people of colour on the most important political and cultural issues. But true diversity includes diversity of thought\, and in this respect\, minority communities are as diverse as any other communities in our country. \nTo help Canadian youth of different backgrounds create a national discussion that reflects the true diversity of opinions that we know is out there\, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute is launching the first ever Speak For Ourselves Essay Competition. \nThis competition will invite essays from Canadian students that push back against the prevailing narratives that are imposed upon or seek to marginalize diverse voices. The contest winner will receive a $1500 prize\, mentorship support\, and will have their essay featured in MLI’s Inside Policy magazine. As part of this contest\, MLI will also host a writing workshop\, mentorship roundtables\, and Instagram Live discussions for young Canadians. \n“A diversity of opinions from individuals with different backgrounds represents a strong measure of a successful democracy\,” said MLI Senior Fellow Jamil Jivani\, who also recorded a video message announcing the contest. “Young Canadians deserve to be heard\, especially those whose opinions are often left out of public debate.” \nThis essay competition is part of MLI’s Speak for Ourselves project\, which seeks to amplify the views of people of colour whose dissent from mainstream narratives might leave them without a platform for expressing their opinions. Launched in 2020\, Speak for Ourselves embodies the principle that all people are unique and entitled to think and speak for themselves without having ideas imposed onto them. \nAccording to MLI Munk Senior Fellow Shuvaloy Majumdar\, “supporting true diversity and inclusion is much more important than succumbing to the narrow ‘culture war’ debate being perpetuated in much of society.” \nThe contest is now open\, and essays can be submitted between now and November 29th at 11:59pm ET. Eligible participation is open to Canadian students aged 25 and younger. Essays can be anywhere between 750 and 1000 words in length. \nAs Jivani notes\, successful submissions will be those that provide “a unique and compelling argument or commentary on issues of race\, racism\, and diversity – the kind of argument you might not read in the opinion sections of Canada’s major papers or in a university classroom.” \nTo learn more about the essay contest\, a full list of rules\, requirements\, and key information can be found here. \nCommenting on the essay competition\, MLI Senior Fellow Kaveh Shahrooz says that it “presents an opportunity to reward a bright and talented young Canadian whose views and opinions deserve their time in the spotlight.” \nIn addition to the essay competition\, MLI will be hosting a digital writers’ workshop to discuss ideas and best practices for prospective participants. To register for the workshop\, click here. \nFurthermore\, media\, educational institutions\, and prospective participants are invited to contact: \nBrett Byers\nCommunications and Digital Media Manager \nhttps://www.macdonaldlaurier.ca/speak-essay-competition-contest-rules/

SUMMARY:Fourth Genre - NONFICTION
DESCRIPTION:Here at Fourth Genre editorial we are thirsty for essays that give us something to drink besides mainstream ideologies and forms\, that showcase imagination and meaning-making capacities\, that embrace a love of a sentence’s shape. We believe good essays center the margin or marginalize the center\, or even better\, blow up the center-margin borders. We want essays that make the common uncommon—that are not about the things they pretend to be about. You know\, the essay about your shoelace that’s not really about your shoelace. We want to read more essays that reflect the intersections of race\, ethnicity\, culture\, class\, identity\, gender\, sexuality\, diasporas\, borderlands; and more essays that are cultural\, lyrical\, experimental\, personal\, environmental\, self-interrogative\, meditative\, and reflective\, as well as expository\, analytical\, exploratory\, or whimsical. We want to publish the best creative nonfiction essays\, understanding that notions of “best\,” of taste and genre\, are political and cultural.\n\n\nSubmission Guidelines \n\nGeneral Submissions: Accepted September 1 – November 30 only. Authors selected for publication paid with two (2) complimentary copies of the journal.\nPlease include an approximate word count. No need to include a bio.\nPlease be sure your name does not appear on the manuscript\, either on the front page or in the headers or footers.\n8\,000 word limit for general submissions.\nDuring the fall reading period\, we ask that you submit only one piece per author.\nSimultaneous submissions require immediate notification to Fourth Genre if accepted elsewhere.\n\nIMAGES & DERIVATIVE MATERIALS \n\nAlthough we love graphic and visual elements in essays\, we cannot print the inside pages in color. Any image in your essay must be effective in gray scale.\nAll images must be minimum 300 dpi at planned publication size.\nIt is the author/researcher’s obligation and responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright and/or other use restrictions prior to submitting materials to MSU Press for publication.\nCitations\, permissions\, and captions are required upon submission for all images\, including those derived from the internet.\nUse the Fourth Genre Permission Request Letter to obtain permission from image’s rightsholder.\nMSU Press cannot publish such materials until written clearance is obtained.

Accepting just about anything\, as long as it is created with abandon\, and we pay our contributors. This means that we’re open to so-called “genre fiction\,” from mystery to sci-fi to romance to fantasy to horror to whatever strikes your fancy. As long as the writing is powerful and abandons the preconceived notions of what is expected\, we want to read it \n\nFlash (fiction or nonfiction): max 1\,000 words each (1-3 pieces at a time\, please)\nShort story: max 7\,500 words\nLonger story: 7\,500-12\,000 words\nCreative nonfiction: max 8\,000 words\nPoetry: any length or form (please send no more than five poems at a time)\nAbandon Form: this is hybrid\, experimental\, and/or idiosyncratic work that doesn’t fit into conventional genres\, categories\, or forms\, and can be of any length\n\n.

SUMMARY:The Fiddlehead - POETRY - Call for Submission
DESCRIPTION:The Fiddlehead‘s regular submission period via Submittable is currently open. Our reading periods are February 15 – April 30 and September 15 – November 30. We accept poetry\, fiction\, and creative nonfiction. Due to overwhelming submission volume\, once your work has been submitted\, we cannot process substitutions or modifications. Mailed submissions (in any category) are accepted and considered throughout the year. \nWe have three writing contests:  \n\nPoetry: opens September 1. Deadline December 1. Winning poem to be published in spring issue.\nCreative Nonfiction: opens March 1. Deadline June 1. Winning piece to be published in fall issue.\nShort Fiction: opens June 1. Deadline September 1. Winning story to be published in winter issue.\n\n*If a deadline falls on a weekend\, the deadline moves to the Monday. Deadlines are midnight Atlantic Time. Mailed submissions must be postmarked. \n* * * \nThe Fiddlehead is open to good writing in English or translations into English from all over the world and in a variety of styles\, including experimental genres. Our editors are always happy to see new unsolicited works in fiction\, including excerpts from novels\, creative nonfiction\, and poetry. We also publish reviews\, and occasionally other selected creative work such as excerpts from plays. Work is read on an ongoing basis; the acceptance rate is around 1-2% (we are\, however\, famous for our rejection notes!). Apart from our annual contest\, we have no deadlines for submissions. \nWe particularly welcome submissions from Indigenous writers\, writers of colour\, writers with disabilities\, LGBTQQIA+ writers\, and writers from other intersectional and under-represented communities. If you are comfortable identifying yourself as one or more of the above\, please feel free to mention this in your cover letter. \nThe Fiddlehead will not read work that is ableist\, misogynistic\, queer-phobic\, or racist. \nIf you are serious about submitting to The Fiddlehead\, you should read an issue or two to get a sense of the journal. Consider subscribing  or contact us to order sample back issues ($10-$15 plus postage). \nGeneral Guidelines for Unsolicited Submissions\n• Pay is $60 CAD per published page\, plus two complimentary copies of the issue with your work. Contributors may purchase additional copies of an issue at a discount. \n• The Fiddlehead buys first serials rights; copyright is retained by the author at all times\, and authors are free to resell the work\, though we do ask for a 90-day exclusive from our first publication of the work. \n• Writers may only submit once per calendar year per genre. (This does not include our contests). \n• Please wait for an editorial response before submitting again. We try our best to respond in a timely matter\, but due to volume of submissions\, a response may take 6 months or more. Please wait 6 months before querying. \n• We only consider unpublished work. Please do not submit work that has been previously published or accepted for publication\, including in anthologies\, chapbooks\, blogs\, Facebook pages\, or online journals. \n• For online submissions\, please submit one file containing your creative work (.doc\, .docx\, or .pdf). Log back in any time to check the status of your submission. \n• For hard copy\, mailed submissions\, all submissions should be typed/word-processed\, spell-checked\, and paginated. Please use white paper\, print on one side only\, and put your name on every page of your submission. \n• In Submittable\, please copy and paste your cover letter and biographical statement in the appropriate fields. \n• Tell us in your cover letter whether your submission is exclusive to The Fiddlehead or whether you have submitted it to other magazines simultaneously. If another magazine accepts your work for publication that you have also submitted to us\, then please advise us immediately.

SUMMARY:PNF - Puerto del Sol Seeks Writing on Water
DESCRIPTION:For over half a century\, Puerto del Sol has been dedicated to provide a forum for inventive and fresh prose\, poetry\, reviews\, criticism\, and artwork; and we strive to publish voices from emerging and established writers and artists. Most importantly\, we pride ourselves in not following a standardized aesthetic—instead\, we seek work that presents authenticity\, sincerity\, and respect. We recommend reading our most current issue or works from our online journal to get a sense of the content we have published recently. Thank you for your interest in our magazine\, and we look forward to reading your work. \nPuerto del Sol seeks work which engages with water in all its forms. Life and growth and blood and poison and drought and commodity. Snow and steam and tsunami. We want to read work as sharp and brittle as ice. We want stories\, essays\, and poems which drip from dew-soaked branches or crash like waterfalls. Show us something as vast as the sea or as small as a single droplet of acid rain. Send us your explorations of fluidity\, of the ways things shift and change\, and of things which cannot be held\, no matter how hard we try.

SUMMARY:NP - Farmer-ish: Farmers Write
DESCRIPTION:Farmer-ish is a journal dedicated to all things farmer–with a literary and educational slant. This journal is the culmination of my life’s work as a writing teacher\, writer\, and farmer. In the pages of this journal\, you will find coverage for everything from raising chickens to jam recipes to poetry about farming and Nature. In difficult times like these\, many are finding themselves more interested in growing food\, becoming makers\, and living more connectedly to Nature and their local farming communities. Our goal is to provide engaging and educational essays and how-to pieces for those interested in doing things like raising chickens\, gardening\, canning\, and sewing. Along the way\, we will offer poetry\, photography\, and creative nonfiction\, making Farmer-ish a journal that lives in between farming and the arts–a place we know so well here on Sands End Farm in beautiful Maine. \nCountry of Publication & Year Established\n\n\n\n United States\nEstablished in 2020\n\n\n\n\n\nPublication Medium & Frequency\n\n\n\nEElectronic Publication\nElectronic Publication\nPublished 4 x per year.\n\n\n\n\n\nNonfiction OPEN\n\n\nRolling Submissions:\n\nNext cutoff date is 10 December 2021* (approx. 23 days from now).Track 1\n\nAudience:\nOpen to a broad Audience.\nStyles:\nOpen to all/most Styles\, including: Literary\, Mainstream\, Personal.\nTopics:\nAgriculture/Agricultural Sciences (General\, Animal husbandry\, See guidelines)\, Lifestyle (Cooking\, Mind-body-spirit)\, Literature/Books (Theory/Analysis/Criticism\, See guidelines)\, Nature/Environment\, Other (See guidelines).\nTheme(s):\n\n\n\n\nTHEME\nDEADLINE\nTRACK\n\n\n\n\nFarmers Write\n10 Dec 2021*\nTrack 2\n\n\n\n\nTypes/Lengths:\n\n\n\n\nTYPE\nLENGTH DETAILS\n\n\n\n\nVReview Review\nNo specific word count limits known.\n\n\nYEssay Essay\nUp to 1\,000 words.\n\n\nZNarrative Nonfiction Narrative Nonfiction\n1\,000 – 2\,000 words.\n\n\n\n\nPayscale:\nWe list broad pay categories rather than payment specifics. SUMMARY:P - Submissions to Vallum 19:1 are now open! Theme: "Bridges."
DESCRIPTION:The ability to move oneself towards future possibilities and potentials brings us to bridges\, to principles of connection. Our current social and mental states can often seem to function on the premise of fragmentation\, with past and present chaos always sweeping away a moment of coming together. The bridging of gaps and grounding in the wake instability is crucial to our personal\, and collective\, well-being. We’re looking for poetry that speaks about these fractures and uncertainties\, and/or about our abilities to overcome them\, to build bridges. \nOur call is open to poems\, essays\, reviews\, interviews\, as well as audio or video peoms. Read more details on hot to submit through our Submittable! \nVallum is interested in original and previously unpublished work. Ideal submissions are well-crafted\, fresh and edgy. We are committed to enriching and continuing the tradition of poetry in the present day. We welcome submissions that deepen our understanding of what poetry is and can be. We are open to most styles\, whether experimental or traditional – though issues are usually put together with an underlying theme in mind\, so not all poetry can be accepted\, even if it is genius! \nSubmission fee: We charge a minimum fee of $3 per submission when submitting online. We use this fee to help cover reading fees and printing costs. Any donation of $10 or greater will be issued a charitable receipt. If this amount presents a barrier to your ability to submit\, please contact submission@vallummag.com. \nSimultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as submissions are withdrawn from Submittable in a timely manner. If your work has been published in our most recent issue\, please wait one issue before submitting again\, at which point we will be happy to consider more of your work \nSubmissions are accepted through Submittable only. We do not accept mailed submissions. \nWe pay our contributors!

SUMMARY:PFN - NOR Annual Editor Prizes For Fiction\, Nonfiction and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Entry fee comes with 1-year subscription. \nWe accept literary submissions in any genre.  We do not reprint previously published work\, book reviews\, or unsolicited translations. Our submission periods are September 15th to December 15th\, and January 15th to April 15th. \nWe recommend considering the page count of your work before submitting. Since NOR is a relatively thin volume\, a prose piece of more than 20 pages will have to work hard to find a place. \nSimultaneous submissions are fine\, but please let us know in your cover letter and inform us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. \nPlease submit only once per reading period in each genre unless we request more work. \nWe truly appreciate your interest in our magazine and we hope you will subscribe! \nFORMAT: \nPoems should be individually typed\, either single- or double-spaced\, on one side of the page. (Please do not send more than six poems in a single submission.) Prose should be typed\, double-spaced on one side. Cross-genre work or any work that is unusually formatted is welcome\, but please be aware that our page width and font size are restricted. If you are submitting through our online system\, we prefer Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx). \nRESPONSE TIME: \nApproximately 2 – 4 months \nWITHDRAWAL:  \nProse: please click “remove” on the submission manager to delete the entire document. \nPoetry: please click “activity” on the submission to add a note indicating which poem you would like withdrawn from consideration. \nThe Editors’ Prize For Nonfiction \nYou may submit one essay per submission. Prose should be typed\, double-spaced\, and be no longer than 20 pages. \nWinner receives a $1000 Prize and publication in New Ohio Review 31. \nSubmissions for this contest are “Concealed\,” meaning that NOR staffers and the judge will not know the identity of the submitter. Please exclude your contact information from your actual submission–including name\, email address\, and mailing address. \nPieces that are not selected will still be considered for publication in print and online. \nThe Editors’ Prize For Fiction \nYou may submit one story per submission. \nThe NORward Prize  For Poetry \nWe love the work of our poetry contributors and think they can help us find the next great NOR poem. For this reason\, we are happy to announce the 3rd annual “NORward Prize.”  \nThis prize will be judged by a group of our past poetry contributors. \nThe winner will receive a $1\,000 Prize and publication in New Ohio Review 31. \nAdditionally\, any poem that receives a first-place vote from one of our judges is guaranteed to be published on newohioreview.org. These will be “Honorable Mentions in the NORward Prize.” \nPieces that are not selected by our judges will still be considered for publication in our print issues (and our online editions). \nThe contest will be judged “concealed\,” meaning NOR staffers and contest judges will not know the identities of the entrants. Please exclude your contact information from your actual submission–including name\, email address\, and mailing address. \nYou may submit up to 6 single-spaced pages of poetry per submission entry. \nGood luck.
