SUMMARY:F - F(r)iction's Short Story Contest
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: Nov 1\, 2022\nResults: Announced March 18\, 2023\nPrize: $1000 \nLimit: 7\,500 words \nFor full Submission Guidelines\, please read the information on our Submittable page carefully.  And please visit our formatting guidelines page to properly format your work for submission. We won’t reject a submission flat out for not following guidelines\, but we will frown the whole time we’re reading. \nAn insider tip for you all: We seek work that actively pushes boundaries\, that forces us to question traditions and tastes. If your work takes risks\, we want to read it. We like strong narratives that make us feel something and stories we haven’t seen before. To get an idea of the kind of work we look for\, please check out this page from our editors detailing what we look for in our submissions. \nWe also strongly recommend checking out a past issue of F(r)iction before submitting to our contests to get an idea of our general publishing aesthetic. We have several pieces available online\, but there’s nothing like holding a glossy\, full-color issue in your hands. You can check out all of our issues in our shop. \nWe accept work\, written in English\, from anywhere in the world—regardless of genre\, style\, or origin—and welcome speculative writing and experimental literature. Strange is good. Strange with a strong character arc is even better. Keep it weird\, folks.

SUMMARY:PFN - THEMA Call for Submissions: "So THAT's Why"
DESCRIPTION:Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. \nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. Subtlety is more creative. \n\n\n\n\nTHEMA isn’t for everyone. To find out why\, click here. \nNew to submitting manuscripts to journals?\nClick here to download a PDF file of a few basic guidelines. \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem.

SUMMARY:PFN - Moss Piglet Zine Call for Submissions. Theme: "Winter Wonderland" or "Winter of My Discontent"
DESCRIPTION:The Krazines  welcome submissions of prose and poetry for publication in its full-color\, monthly zine\, Moss Piglet.  Anyone of any age or talent level may contribute work (but please\, no politics.)  Each issue has a theme in place to jumpstart your imagination.  You may interpret these themes widely.\n\n\n\n\nOur theme is Winter Wonderland or Winter of My Discontent  Let your imagination be your guide in interpreting this theme. At the first sight of frost\, do you sing\, “Let It Snow\, Let It Snow!” or do you mutter\, “Bah\, Humbug!” Perhaps you live in a climate where you put Christmas ornaments on the cacti or you live in the Southern Hemisphere where winter arrives in the middle of the year. Perhaps\, this month’s theme causes you to recall winters of long ago and the people and the places you knew back then. Or this theme causes you to recite lines from Shakespeare’s Richard III or from John Steinbeck’s final novel\, Winter of Our Discontent. However you may interpret this theme\, send us your creative contribution by or before our deadline. \nSubmissions of Stories\, Essays & Poems\n\nPlease send text submissions in .doc\, .docx or PDF formats to info@krazines.com.  We are more apt to accept short works\, as our publication is digest-size\, but we don’t have a word limit.  Check out some of our past issues to get an idea on the style and length of written work that we have published. \nYou may provide multiple submissions\, but don’t go crazy. Someone has to read all of the stuff that comes across our desk. We’re OK with simultaneous submissions and previously published work. Just cite the place where your writing previously appeared. If you have a fancy title like Poet Laureate\, Writer-In-Residence\, or you have been knighted by the Queen\, we’d be happy to include that information in our publication right next to your name.

SUMMARY:P - Plum Tree Tavern Seeks Submissions on the Theme: "Autumn Moon"
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS\nAUTUMN MOON\nPlum Tree Tavern invites the submission of works for a special Autumn Moon edition. Haiku or other short work not to exceed five lines are preferred; longer works may be submitted and will be considered. \nRegardless of length\, each submission must expressly contain the words “autumn moon” or a similar reference to the moon within the season\, such as “October moon” or “first frost moon.” Traditional kigo may also be used (scarecrow\, crickets\, or harvest as examples). \n\nPoems should be submitted within the body of an email addressed to plumtreetavern (at) gmail (dot) com.\nUp to three poems may be submitted. Please place Autumn Moon in the subject line of any submission. \nAt the editor’s discretion\, submissions may be selected for publication in regular editions of Plum Tree tavern. \n\nPlum Tree Tavern invites original and previously unpublished poetry of green witness and red protest. \nClimate change and social and economic repression are inextricably linked. The crowd denying or preventing effective responses to global warming is the same crowd repressing equality within society. \nFor the green witness and ecopoetic half of the equation\, Plum Tree seeks work focusing on specific images of physical nature. Work that focuses on the image in nature as it exists is greatly preferred over the writer’s judgments of the image. \nThe term “red protest” is deliberately used here to call for poetical works of leftist resistance. The tavern is not looking for wishy washy give peace a chance plea bargains but for work with a sharper edge. But manifesto\, diatribe and polemic without poetical structure or elements isn’t the ticket either. \n\nWorks of up to 40 lines sounds about right. Longer work will be considered. One submission of up to three poems per month sounds about right\, too. Speaking of the calendar\, please submit seasonal work: in season.

SUMMARY:PFN - Atticus Review Seeks Submissions on the Theme of "Language"
DESCRIPTION:The writing in Atticus Review is unashamed\, unadorned\, and unafraid. The stories we love are often lonely\, and sometimes ugly\, but we’re also deeply attracted to the bright\, bold\, and hope-infused. \nWe like hybrid\, unconventional work that pushes boundaries\, elevates and edifies on an intellectual level\, that investigates the inscrutable essence of a thing\, that avoids artifice to stand firmly in its unique voice. \nISSUE THREE: OPEN with a Special Folio on Language\nFor the December 2022 issue\, Atticus Review is looking for work for our open-themed issue. We are\, however\,  especially interested in work that engages with notions and explorations  of language. We are open to any and all interpretations of the prompt. \nThank you for your interest in publishing your work with Atticus Review. We are an online journal that publishes stories\, poems\, essays and other forms of creative digital media. \n Poetry: \nPlease submit 1-5 poems through Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are OK. In terms of style\, our bias tends toward lyrical narrative poetry\, though we’re definitely willing to read whatever — so long as it’s your best work! In other words\, think of your poems less as sermons and more as snapshots. They can be shocking\, serene\, heartbreaking\, elegant\, savage\, narrative\, surreal — or all of the above. \nFiction: \nSend one story of up to 4\,000 words. We especially like Flash Fiction. Stories that are 800 words or less. Stories that don’t need a lot of space to get their point across. If you are submitting Flash\, then you can submit up to three stories. \nWe want stories that engage our hearts and minds. Language matters. We like lyrical. We like dark humor. Most of all\, perhaps\, we want stories that matter. \nCreative Nonfiction:\nSend one piece of up to 3\,000 words. We especially like Flash CNF: pieces that are 800 words or less. \nWith  CNF\, we like seeing the small set against the big picture. We want to  know why this matters. We want writing that engages our hearts and minds. We like lyrical. We like dark humor. We like pieces that look inward and confront shame.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Medley Seeking Submissions on the Theme: "Mosaic"
DESCRIPTION:The Medley is now accepting entries for its eighth issue! The submission window will remain open till 11th December 2022. \n\nFor this issue\, we are on the lookout for works that articulate the theme\, MOSAIC. \nMosaic is a form of art that originally blossomed on the walls of ancient Greek aristocrats. This centuries-old art form uses fragments of multicolored rocks\, glasses\, or other seemingly scrapable materials to weave itself into an exquisite artwork. Despite its fragmentary nature\, the art form comes together as a whole to depict the beauty present in the mundane.\n\nHumanity\, as an inspiration for art\, also forms a mosaic of sorts. The complex and layered emotions\, the multifarious expressions of identities that integrate into an individual or the cultural and social fusion formed by the diversity of people in our daily life\, are transposed forms of mosaic art. From a myriad of shades\, contrasting ideas\, and challenging stories\, an elegant whole can be formed. So\, create your own literary mosaic with personalized experiences and convoluted emotions.\nNon-themed submissions will also be accepted for the issue.

SUMMARY:PFN - 86 Logic: A Celebration of Artists from the Hospitality Industry Seeks Submissions for Issue #10
DESCRIPTION:86 Logic is a quarterly magazine representing artists with roots in the hospitality industry. It is made up of a team of veteran bartenders\, servers\, and hosts who love discovering how art and hospitality intersect. Submissions are open to anyone who has worked in the industry—restaurants\, bars\, and hotels\, to name a few. \nWe pride ourselves in having an easy submission process. Unlike most publications\, printed or otherwise\, we have no restrictions on file type\, size of submission (though our ‘zine is only so big)\, or on the type of work submitted. We feel this keeps us open to all printable genres. \nCurrently we are accepting any and all forms of work including but not limited to stories\, poems and non-fiction for our print magazine that explores\, promotes\, and celebrates artists with roots in the hospitality industry.\nYou must have worked in the hospitality industry — restaurants\, bars\, hotels\, etc. — at some point in your life.  \nSubmission Guidelines are simple. There are none. Show us what you have\, however you have it.  If we like it\, we’ll work with you to get it suitable for publication. We very likely won’t publish your 85 page novella\, but we might use some of it. \nEach selected submitter will receive a copy* of the issue featuring their work. Unfortunately\, we are unable to monetarily compensate artists at this time. \n*International contributors will receive digital versions

SUMMARY:PFN - Young Ravens Literary Review Seeks Submissions on "Exploring and Celebrating Womanhood"
DESCRIPTION:Issue 17 Call for Submissions!\nExploring & Celebrating Womanhood\n\n\n \nThe Priestess Tagerem\n\n\n\nWomanhood is a complex experience that involves more than motherhood or traditional expressions of femininity. From Virginia Woolf’s “a room of her own” to Maya Angelou’s “I’m a woman/ Phenomenally./ Phenomenal woman\,/ That’s me\,” women have claimed their voices unapologetically as writers and creators. \nBut there is still not enough of women’s voices and perspectives in the world. In Issue 17 of Young Ravens\, we are exploring womanhood in all forms as woven into our lives\, histories\, fairy tales\, and myths. We are looking to explore the full range of women’s experiences\, as creators\, historical figures\, the Divine Feminine\, and beyond. \nWe are inspired by a statue of the Egyptian priestess Tagerem\, who was seen as the wife of the god Re. In a version of Tagerem that exists at the Met\, she is bisected at her center. She was thought to display the ideal female form\, but we do not see her face; we only know half of her story. During the Late Period of Egyptian history\, women gained more opportunities “to record elements of their own biographies on stelae and statues” (The Metropolitan Museum of Art). \nWhat are the stories of women that are missing? Whose voices and perspectives need to be expressed today\, carved on monuments and chalked across busy streets? Ideas we would love to see you explore include: \n—Woman as a free and variable being: human.\n—Woman as seared into ink and tale\, from Eve to Cinderella. Can you trace their faces in your own\, or the other women in your lives?\n—Do you remember the day when you realized that your mother had another name before “mom\,” and wondered at the mystery of her?\n—Woman as God. What is the feminine divine\, and how can it be recovered or honored?\n—Woman as World. How does the natural world reflect the many facets of femininity?\n—Woman within. Share those moments that have broken and remade you again and again.\n—Women among us. Their stories shine and fall into shadow alongside your own—who are they? \nWe accept fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry of all flavors\, from free verse to found.  We welcome voices across the gender spectrum\, including LGBTQIA+ creators. \nSubmissions will be accepted until December 13th\, 2022. Please check out our submission guidelines for further information.

SUMMARY:PFN - MSU Libraries Short Édition Seeks Submissions with the Theme "Water"
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the theme of Water\nMichigan State University Libraries Short Édition\, an innovative publishing platform affiliated with the international publisher Short Édition\, seeks short work (8\,000 character max\, about 1\,000 words) exploring the theme of Water. Submissions accepted through December 16\, 2022. Selected work will appear online and in MSU Short Édition machines\, and will be considered for publication internationally. This call is in conjunction with the Broad Art Museum’s 2022 fall exhibit\, Flint is Family in Three Acts\, featuring the photography of Latoya Ruby Frazier. Water\, for our purposes\, will be broadly interpreted and might include meditations on physical\, social\, racial\, environmental\, or other themes. We seek work that avoids platitudes and sentimentality\, demonstrates a deep understanding of craft\, and engages with fresh thinking. \nAccepted submissions will be included in a print issue distributed to all authors and added to MSU Libraries collections. Work will also be compiled in a themed issue available on the MSUL Short Édition site. \nPlease limit submissions to one story\, one short essay\, or up to five poems. Poems must be submitted separately. For example\, if you are submitting five poems\, each poem must be uploaded individually. Each submission should include a short biography directly beneath the work. If you do not receive an automatic confirmation email for each submission\, we have not received your work. \nPlease do not submit previously published work for themed issues.

SUMMARY:F - The Molotov Cocktail Flash Contest Series Call for Submissions. Theme: "Flash Monster"
DESCRIPTION:It’s after midnight\nsomewhere…\n \nSubmit to Flash Monster\nWell\, here’s something different. We’ve been running Halloween contests since 2014\, but this year\, in true nightmare before Christmas fashion\, we’re kicking off our Flash Monster contest mid-October and running it up until the holidays are upon us. \nThat may change the calculations on your lab-grown abominations a little bit; might be time to make your sins against Nature a touch more festive. \nThere’s plenty of room for holiday-themed horror here\, but we also don’t want to see 50 killer Santa Clauses or dozens of Krampuses (Krampi?). Mix things up. Winter themes work (we do love a good snow beast). So do monsters totally unrelated to winter and the holidays. \nIf you participated in or read our Folked-Up Flash contest earlier this year\, you know we’ve got a wicked hankering for folk horror\, and that’s not a bad angle to go here either. Tap into ancient pagan rituals. Subvert traditional holiday tropes. Gifts with sinister implications? Granted wishes with ironic outcomes? The holidays are a good time to mess with classical elements. A little sentimentality with your depravity? Sure\, why the hell not. We’re not monsters. Or just write about something gnarly and weird; that’s the whole point\, after all. \nWe like literary approaches\, but we also dig genre and pulpy takes as well.  Art house or grindhouse. Take a new approach to well-established monster archetypes or create something nobody’s ever seen before. \nYou can check out some past Flash Monster issues here\, here\, here\, here\, here\, here. \nThe top three entries will win cash money. \n$300 for Flash Monster 2022 winner \n$200 for 2nd place \n$100 for 3rd place \nWe also give mad respect to 4th-10th place\,\npublishing them in our Flash Monster mega-issue\nand in a future print anthology\, with contributor copy included. \n \nSubmit to Flash Monster\nFollow these guidelines\, and your best nightmare before Christmas could come true. \n– All submissions must absolutely be under 1\,000 words\, and we tend to look more kindly on 750 or fewer because… THREE-HEADED SQUIRREL! \n– All contest submissions will be read blind\, so we won’t be playing favorites. \n– Please paste your entry into the corresponding field. Do not list your name anywhere or we’ll assume you won’t be able to accurately recite the words that break the curse. \n– Submissions must be previously unpublished work\, and you will retain copyright (duh). By entering this contest\, you give us permission to publish your work (if selected for our Top 10) both online and in a future print anthology. \n– No limit on how many entries you can submit\, but you must submit them one at a time. Don’t just mash them all in there. \n– Contest soft deadline is end of day (PST) Monday\, December 5th\, 2022. Winners announced on December 19th and we’ll unwrap the Flash Monster 2022 mega-issue before the eggnog turns. \n– And\, most importantly\, this is a FLASH MONSTER contest\, so you must include some sort of literal or figurative monster. But again\, this can be in any form imaginable.
