SUMMARY:NF - Call for Submissions to Root Quarterly. Theme: Glass Houses
DESCRIPTION:“People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” It’s a phrase that evolved from Chaucer and on through the proverb mill\, with Benjamin Franklin and others taking turns at the wheel. It’s related to the idea that “those without sin should not cast the first stone” in that both convey a sense of needing to be self-aware about our own faults and vulnerabilities before we attack others. Though we live in a selfie culture\, we seem to have become correspondingly less self-aware. What can we do to pause\, and to reflect? What might help us in the process of regarding others as full human beings\, even when we may disagree with them? Why do we hate hypocrites so much? \nWHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: \nFiction\, including experimental fiction and erotica\, is welcome. Please send pieces of 500 to 2\,000 words. \nPersonal essays or articles for our “Switchbacks” section that relate points of inflection in a person’s life that have taken them to an unexpected and new place. Please send full pieces for consideration. \nTONE & STYLE \nIt’s okay to have a distinctive voice! But we’re also looking for writers who will largely forgo snark\, condescension\, bullying\, point-scoring\, self-serving virtue signaling\, etc.\, and will instead try on for size some finesse\, awe\, grace\, wit\, and humility. It’s okay to have questions and not answers. Ideas and issues are complicated\, and they take time to unwind. \nWe’re also looking for people who aren’t afraid to write a piece even if people within their bubble might disagree with it. Two great examples are here in The Atlantic and here in Seattle’s Weekly\, The Stranger. Both are written by hardcore liberals who are willing to call on other liberals to be more rigorous with their arguments. \nBe wild\, be funny\, be weird\, be contrarian. The worst we can say is ‘no.’ \nCOMPENSATION \nThis is a volunteer-run project\, and it’s a barn-raising in every way. Printing bills are expensive. But we know your time is valuable and that art isn’t free. That’s why we’ve got a subscription-based model and we don’t give our content away online. \nWe typically give honorariums of $50 to $150 depending on the piece and its length\, as well as for artwork contributions that illustrate articles. Longer\, solicited profiles or articles will be compensated at 10 cents per word\, to be determined at the time we agree on a proposal and consult our current funds. If there’s a piece that absolutely needs to be written but would require more time and research\, we’re willing to look into grants that may fund the work; we are a fiscally-sponsored project of Cultureworks in Philadelphia\, and can accept tax-deductible contributions. \n*If you are suffering from financial hardship and can’t afford a single issue at $15\, you may send an email to editor@rootquarterly.com and we’ll work something out. \nHOW TO SUBMIT \nTake in all of the above\, do a little reading\, cozy up with an issue. \nThen you can send us an email keeping all those guidelines and principles in mind. DESCRIPTION:Climate Change Anthology Submissions\n\n\n\nBronze Bird Books (www.bronzebirdbooks.com) is preparing a standalone anthology focused on climate change and related themes. We are especially interested in localized impacts. How has your community been affected by climate change? What might the future have in store for your region\, according to the modeling or changes you’ve witnessed firsthand? \n\nWe will be accepting submissions until August 15th\, 2024. \nOur objective is to view this high-stakes global issue through a personal and localized lens\, making the subject matter more relatable\, thus inspiring change initiatives. This anthology will primarily include poetry\, though we are also open to “cli-fi\,” essays\, or letters to future generations. Works addressing pollution or environmental degradation will also be considered. Beyond adverse impacts\, we’ll also consider literary works conveying a reverence for nature and sensitive ecologies. \nPublication Notes / FAQ: \n\nAugust 15th is the deadline for submissions.\nIf your submission is accepted for publication\, we will notify you by September 1st. If you haven’t heard from us by then\, consider it a pass. However\, barriers may exist to prevent sharing of thoughts and feelings leading to isolation and depression. It has been studied that poetry is an artform that allows people to express themselves in ways traditional communication cannot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is evidence showing the therapeutic benefits of poetry\, even across various vulnerable groups such as those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, seniors\, including those with dementia\, and troubled adolescents. Poetry acts as a non-medical intervention to promote public health and wellbeing\, with significant potential in enhancing quality of life. DESCRIPTION:Short story contest #44\nEXPERTISE \nFor this contest\, write a creative\, compelling\, well-crafted story between 1\,000 and 5\,000 words long in which one or more characters with significant expertise in some area matter to the story. The expert(s) DO NOT have to be the story’s main character(s)\, though it’s fine if they are–the judges won’t care either way. We’re also open to the idea that your story’s character(s) with expertise might be either wrong\, or frauds\, or idiots. (Or they’re legitimate experts!) SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Sinister Wisdom: A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal. Theme: Gender Diverse Lesbians
DESCRIPTION:Gender Diverse Lesbians\nLimited Demographic: Submissions are restricted to lesbians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGender nonconformity has long\, thick\, roots in Lesbianism\, but the coexistence of being other gendered and Lesbianism is as varied in its narrative as what is meant by “gender diverse\,” “nonbinary\,” and/or “other gendered.” The controversy surrounding French Lesbian philosopher Monique Wittig’s statement\, “Lesbians are not women\,” provides a snapshot into this tension. This conclusion stemmed from her broader argument that woman is a social and political class defined by the patriarchal heterosexual contract; that man and woman are categories of dominance. Conceptualizing Lesbianism as resistance to the patriarchy-as freedom to be and love whoever despite the existing man-made binaries of humanity’s social roles\, places Lesbians outside of “man” and “woman.” \nWittig rejects the reclamation of woman as playing into the system of oppression and ultimately upholding it. Though not an argument for other genders and radical in its rhetoric\, her argument may be appropriated to tell a more gender inclusive story of Lesbianism. Us nonbinary\, gender diverse\, and genderqueer Lesbians are doing exactly what our cisters are doing: conceptualizing\, existing\, and loving outside of what is structured to have power over us. Yet\, our lives are not just theoretical\, philosophical\, or political arguments. We are not just bodies that you impress and practice your ideologies on. \nThis issue aims to hold space for Lesbians who explicitly fall in between (all over and simultaneously at) trans identities conceptualized as places on opposite ends: trans men and trans women. This issue seeks to honor and affirm Lesbians outside of the sex/gender binary in all forms that it may take and to include nonconcrete gender identities found in all cultural specifics. \nAction\, place\, and physicality. The discourse around gender has been so simultaneously concrete and abstractly individualistic. What does it mean to be trans\, but to not transition? Why is transness qualified by action? What if the change were only social\, and not medical? What happens when consider nonbinary as a subculture? How may we appropriate the language and theology of our Lesbian/Queer ancestors to foster a more gender diverse Lesbian world? \nWe seek essays\, short fiction\, poetry\, and oral histories that tackle these questions and more. Of utmost importance is a representation of gender diverse Lesbian lives in all forms. Please submit once through Submittable; submissions should be in one document (up to 10 pages). We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nWe find stories that include gratuitous violence distasteful. Sexism\, racism\, or other forms of intolerance are intolerable to us. That said\, you can certainly reveal a character through his/her prejudices; just don’t use a story to perpetuate negative stereotypes or ignorance. The world is already bursting with both. \nUsing the elements\n3Elements Literary Review  is a themed literary journal\, and all THREE elements (the specific words\, Poison Ivy\, Hologram\, Fire Escape) given for the submission period must be included in your story or poem for your work to be considered for publication. DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for our Summer 2024 Fox Tales Prize. The theme for this round is “Portraits of Failure.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWe’re challenging writers to delve into the moments when plans collapse\, dreams are crushed\, and efforts fall short. How does a person grapple\, adapt\, and ultimately grow from their failures? What unexpected insights or opportunities arise from these experiences? Is failure sometimes final? What does that mean for a person when it is? For this contest\, we hope writers will explore the hidden beauty\, resilience\, heartbreak\, disappointment\, and wisdom that stem from the greatest setbacks. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that interprets the theme best. The prize is $300 and print publication in the Winter 2025 issue. All submissions are considered for print publication in the Winter 2025 issue. Guest editor\, Tramaine Suubi contemplated about the term and how “it feels deeply resonant for our current times. My life\, my very body\, feels full of grief. As I tried to find home on 15 wildly different streets\, in five cities\, across four nations\, on three continents\, my body certainly kept the score. . . . In my present season of life\, I am reclaiming darkness and blackness as spaces of goodness—as spaces of rest\, reflection\, and revival. . . . Grief and gratitude are often intertwined in my findings.” \nThis issue’s theme is kitalo \n: an empathetic Luganda term of solidarity offered when someone experiences a spectrum of loss \n: directly translates to “this/that is tragic” but is far richer than that \nOur hope is that this issue gives women-identifying creatives a place where they can meditate on communal grief and communal gratitude. Here are some guiding questions about the theme: \n1) In the midst of grief\, how have others cared for you\, how do you care for others\, and how do you care for yourself? What are the most striking or profound examples you have experienced or witnessed? \n2) If your grief were to take the form of an animal (remember\, humans are animals\, too)\, which animal (fictional\, nonfictional\, or extinct) would it be and how would this animal behave? Be as specific as possible. Feel free to defy logic and science; grief often can. \n3) Have you ever immigrated to or emigrated from a different nation than your current nation of residence? What potential life paths and livelihoods did you leave behind as a result? Which ones do you still yearn for and why\, if any? \n4) Have you ever experienced a platonic break-up (real or imaginary friend)? If so\, how do you specifically navigate or ignore the gaps left by lost friendship? \n5) Who (fictional or nonfictional) is no longer present in your life\, whom you would like to offer your deepest gratitude to? \nYellow Arrow Journal is looking for creative nonfiction and poetry submissions by writers/artists who identify as women\, on the theme of kitalo. DESCRIPTION:Becoming Part of the EAP Community.\n\n\nJoin the conversation. \nIn EAP: The Magazine\, all sorts of writing comes under the heading of what we here call “very EAP.”  We’ve published film scripts\, a libretto\, poems\, short stories\, and analyses of everything from the Museum of Jurassic Technology\, to Boris Pasternak’s love of the Everyday\, to Bugs Bunny as a model for foreign policy.  We’ve published a paean to the Dodo\, a poem of outrage about the betrayal of a revolution\, and the story of a snotty little kid who falls through a rabbit hole and fights a Gnome Army to change the world. \nAnd more. \nIf you’ve got something to say that is clear\, courteous\, and creative\, then we really would love to hear from you. Email  Mike for anything relating to Popular Culture\, email Marissa for Poems\, and email Tod for Everything Else. \nWe’re an eccentric bunch\, and an eclectic bunch\, but we’re also very welcoming and very curious about whatever you have to say. And you certainly don’t have to have the premise of a book in mind before joining the conversation (another of our favorite sayings: “The perfect is the enemy of the good”). If there’s something you’re passionate about\, try it out on us. Write an essay. A critique. A poem. A fanciful vision of whatever far off world it is that you daydream about. The plan is simply that the best and most inquiring of the pieces submitted to the quarterly magazine will be offered the opportunity to be worked on to eventually form books that will be published by EAP. \n(One caveat\, though—and a very important one\, too. If your secret wish is to become rich and famous\, and be able to look down on others less fortunate than you through the magic of your own writing\, we are the wrong place for you. What we’re looking for is people who are more interested in expressing something they have to say about who they are\, why the world is the way it is\, and what is possible to be done to make both of those better. Really. That’s who we’re looking for. You’re not going to get rich and famous with EAP. We think people trying to get rich and famous is a crummy way to run a culture\, prizing mindless competition over a real desire to understand reality. Just so you know.)

DESCRIPTION:We seek first publication rights (print and electronic) for all works submitted. Authors retain copyright of their work. \nGuidelines\n\nPlease do NOT print your name or contact details on your submission document.\nCordite only accepts unpublished work.\nSimultaneous submissions? Sure. Just inform us or withdraw if the work is accepted elsewhere.\nPlease send a maximum of three (3) poems in your submission. Submit only one time. 2nd and 3rd submissions\, even if 1 poem apiece\, will be rejected.\nPlease send all of your works in one (1) document. For electronic poetry\, submit a document with instructions on how and where to access the submission. Large sound and video files can be shared via Drive or similar open means. Submit a document with those URLs.\nSubmissions will only be accepted via this online submissions form.\nPlease keep in mind that the guest poetry editor(s) will not commence reading the submissions until the submissions window closes. Allow 5-6 weeks thereafter for notification.\nAuthors whose poems are accepted for the issue will be included on our mail list (which can be opted out of).\nAs a government-funded non-profit charity\, we can only pay Australian citizens  and permanent residents for poems published.\n\nSubmissions\n\nThe following conditions apply to all poetry submissions: \n\nWe will only read submissions sent during our official submission periods.\nCordite maintains a hybrid submissions policy. This means that the guest editor may invite five (5) Australian and five (5) overseas authors directly to submit to the issue. In addition\, the guest-editor will anonymously select an additional 30-35 works from Australian authors and use their discretion to select further overseas works. For each issue\, the guest editor does not know the identities of the online contributors (via Submittable) until after the final selections have been made.\nSimultaneous submissions? Sure. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 9th October – BELL\, BOOK & CANDLE – Seeking sin\, shame & all things dark & Halloweeny\, 800-2000 words – deadline Sunday 1st September \nWHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR\, IN SHORT:\n– New fiction\, i.e. unpublished (print/web/audio)\n– Stories which are on-theme\n– Anonymised (no name on the document)\n– Word count: STRICTLY 800-2000\n– Send to: liars@liarsleague.com\n \nStories must be \n1. Unpublished (in print or online)\, unbroadcast\, and not a prizewinner in any previous competition. \n2. Between 800-2000 words long. \n3. Submitted to liars@liarsleague.com by 11.59pm (UK time) on March 3. \n4. Submitted as an MS Word (.doc\, .docx) or .rtf document\, ideally with 1.5 or double spacing. NO PDFs PLEASE. \n5. Attached to an email which has the story title\, the month of the event and the theme in the subject header. Please put your name at the bottom of your email but NOT on your story\, as we prefer to judge anonymously. \n6. A prose short story. This means no poetry\, no scripts\, no non-fiction. We’ll look at novel extracts\, but only if they work as stand-alone pieces. \n7. ON-THEME. This means that there should be a traceable link to the theme\, or that the theme should be invoked or interpreted as a central part of the story. Simply featuring a bar called “Duck & Dive” if that’s the theme is not enough; but make your main character a dodgy dealer in stolen goods\, and we’ll be interested. \nWriters must be \n1. Willing to have their name and the text of their story up on this site if they win. \n2. Willing to be paid for their work in kind. Unfortunately\, Liars’ League does not currently pay contributors in $ or £. However\, if your story is chosen\, you will benefit from the following: \n– Publication of your story on this site: it will also be considered for future print anthologies published by our partners Arachne Press \n– Free drinks all night (if you are able to attend the event).
