SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Exposed Brick Literary Magazine. Theme: "Time Capsule"
DESCRIPTION:If you could capture this moment in a bottle and preserve it for the future\, what would that look like? Or what have you preserved that has stood the test of time? With this issue\, we want to take the best and most potent markers of our time and put them in a metaphoric time capsule. We want to know what you value and how those values will look after the test of time. \n  \nTo us\, “Time Capsule” means: \n1. What is something that reflects your values? \n2. How would you like to be remembered in the future? \n3. What is the essence of right now? \n4. Which things have been preserved from the past that are still relevant now? \n5. What are things you want to preserve? \n6. An artifact with its significance of preservation \n7. What has your family been through that has gotten them to this point and is important for future generations to know about. \n8. What is important in your culture that needs to be preserved? \n9. But as always\, it can mean whatever you want! \n  \nWe are excited to see your creative take on this theme.

SUMMARY:PFN - Persimmon Tree Short Takes Call for Submissions. Theme: "Shameless Self-Promotion"
DESCRIPTION:Submissions Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPersimmon Tree’s mission is to bring the creativity and talent of women over sixty to a wide audience of readers of all ages. We are looking for work that reveals rich experience and a variety of perspectives. Each issue of the magazine will include several fiction and nonfiction pieces\, and poetry by one or more poet(s). \n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT SUBMISSIONS REQUIREMENT: \nSubscriptions to PERSIMMON TREE are free\, but\, for your work to be considered\, you must be a subscriber.  Visit site to subscribe. \nShort Takes:  \nShort Takes are usually short pieces\, fiction or non-fiction (250-500 words)\, but can also be topical poetry. We’re especially interested in hearing about your experiences\, but you can include your thoughts\, dreams\, ideas and opinions. Humor and irony are always appreciated! \n  \nFALL ISSUE – publication date: September 15\, 2023\nTopic for the fall issue: Shameless Self-Promotion \nWhat we are looking for:\nWomen of the “boomer” generation and before were\, by and large\, raised to be self-effacing\, not to trumpet our accomplishments. In fact\, many of us came of age believing it would be unseemly for us even to have accomplishments. It’s time to step outside that (dis)comfort zone: Short Takes is open for bragging. Of all the fabulous things you have done in your life\, until now cloaked in demure silence\, which makes you proudest? Share it\, or them\, with pride\, and without embarrassment.\nSubmissions accepted: August 10\, 2023\, to August 20\, 2023\n(Please do not submit earlier or later than those dates.)

While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Do You Smell Burning?’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. We love free verse poems that take familiar situations and turn them on their head\, using unusual metaphors and drawing parallels no one else would see. Poems with a sense of place and story are always welcome\, as are experimental pieces. SUMMARY:N - The Letter Review Prize for Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction’s popularity is soaring due to the ever increasing demands of voracious readers who are hungry for content which is highly relevant to their interests. There’s never been a better time to be a nonfiction author\, or a more exciting time to publish nonfiction. Letter Review connects writers with the vast number of people in search of fresh nonfiction content. \nNonfiction is a broad category: we’ve all been enchanted by the spell of a compelling piece of nonfiction in one of its many evolving forms. The Letter Review Prize welcomes all forms of nonfiction including: Memoir\, journalism\, essay (including personal essay)\, fictocriticism\, creative nonfiction\, travel\, nature\, opinion\, and many other permutations. \nAny and all works which convey information about the real world are welcome. Nonfiction may inform\, it may persuade\, explore\, or divulge. It takes the shape of both anecdote and empirical observation. The inclusion of information which the author knows to be untrue or fictional is discouraged in this genre: but subjective conclusions are certainly encouraged. \nNonfiction competitions represent a wonderful opportunity for emerging writers to demonstrate their ability and secure publication. They also offer established writers an exciting arena in which to showcase new work and build their reputations. \nLetter Review believes in the power of literature\, and in the importance and magic of new writing. \nThe top three winning entries are declared the Winners\, and share equally in the Prize pool of $1000 USD. SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contest Theme: "Art of Deception"
DESCRIPTION:August 2023 Fox Tales Contest: Art of Deception\n\n\nFor the month of August 2023\, Black Fox is accepting contest submissions for our Fox Tales series. The theme for August is “Art of Deception.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nOur Fox Tales contests are month-long mini contests that run between our two main contests. They allow us to publish more writers and creative work outside of our usual biannual issues! \nFox Tales will be published as “mini books” on our Instagram account and website! Instagram carousels remind us of turning book pages\, and we thought it would be fun to transform carousels into mini books! We will design carousel pages for the winning stories and poetry. Writers should keep in mind word counts. We are not opposed to longer stories and will consider them\, but be aware shorter stories tend to resonate better with us for this project. We suggest keeping submissions around 500-2\,000 words. Poets may submit 3-8 poems. If a work is too long for 8 Instagram squares\, we will break it up into several parts. \nDo you have characters who are living in a realm of deceit or spinning webs of lies? We want to read about them for our August Fox Tales Contest! We’re looking for work that challenges perceptions\, showcases characters caught in a labyrinth of lies\, and/or leaves readers stuck in a gray area. Show us truth camouflaged by falsehoods\, the blurred line between fact and fiction\, or the entanglement of half-truths and illusions. Whether you submit a short story\, poem\, or creative nonfiction piece\, we want to explore complex emotions. Will the result be redemption or ruin? \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose 1-3 winners. The prize is $100 and publication as an Instagram carousel mini book and on our website as part of our Fox Tales series. Winners will also receive a Black Fox Writer Pack which contains writerly items from our sister company Writer’s Atelier and more. In each pack: \n\nOne back issue of Black Fox Literary Magazine\nA one-year digital subscription to Poets & Writers\nA copy of The Write Gym Workbook by Racquel Henry\nLittle Book of Writing Affirmations by Racquel Henry\nWriting Stickers\nA “Just F***ing Write” Pencil\nA “Get the Book Done” Tote Bag\nSticky notes\n\nThe contest entry fee is $9 and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on August 31\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be between 500-2\,000 words. For poetry\, send 3-8 poems in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of October\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:PFN - Beloved: Love Letters to the Beauty of ButchFemme Seeking Submissions on "Flesh"
DESCRIPTION:“Flesh” \n\nOur Autumn ’23 Theme\n\n\nIn decay\, there is devotion. Through flesh\, we express our desire. The grotesque and unsettling\, the terrifying and unholy\, the bare and exposed. Sinking teeth into the body of your lover or the lick of salt from sweat or tears or blood… how does your ButchFemme devotion become realized in the flesh? \nFor the third issue of Beloved\, we want to see your interpretations on the theme of Flesh. Send us your ButchFemme horror\, present us with the beauty of the grotesque\, show us how touch and devotion and consumption embody your ButchFemme identities and desires. \nYou are absolutely welcome to submit more than one piece for review\, but please divide your pieces into SEPARATE submissions unless your work is all part of one collection (ex: if you are submitting multiple different poems\, please only submit one per application unless they are all part of the same collection). \n\n\n\nPlease do not submit to our publication if your work is not somehow related to ButchFemme/StudFemme culture\, identities\, or experiences. Please be sure that all work submitted ties back to the central topic and theme of “Flesh”! Feel free to take a look at our mood board to get inspired\, and if you have any hesitance on whether or not your piece fits the theme\, just submit it anyway! We’d love to see it either way. 🙂 \nNOTE: We are currently only accepting works from applicants who are 18+!

Each round is different; some judges will choose to have a theme\, some will not. Please check the Call for Submissions post for each individual contest (listed below and on our blog) for details on the theme. General guidelines are as follows: \nWe accept:\n\nFiction. A complete story\, up to 405 words (Get it?).\nNonfiction. A complete story\, up to 405 words.\nPoetry. One poem\, up to 5 lines (including prose poems).\nStage & Screen. A complete scene\, up to 4 pages. Please format according to the standard unpublished playwriting or screenwriting format.\nExperimental. A complete short form narrative utilizing innovative techniques and/or hybrid forms. All submissions are judged anonymously. Multiple entries are allowed. Simultaneous submissions and previously published works are not. One piece per entry. Each entry is $5.\n\n\nJudging: We read your work. We deliberate\, we duke it out\, and eventually we narrow it down. Our judge chooses 1st and 2nd place\, along with up to three honorable mentions.\n\n\nPrizes: The winners will all receive publication on the website. Our first and second place winners will also receive a cash prize–but here’s the fun part\, there’s no limit to how much you could win. The more entries we receive\, the larger the prize! Here’s a breakdown:\n\n1st prize: Online publication + 40% of all entry fees.\n2nd prize: Online publication + 20% of all entry fees.\nHonorable Mention: Online publication.\n\n\n\nIs your interest piqued?

SUMMARY:P - tiny wren Anthology Series Seeks "The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power an Fragility of Memories"
DESCRIPTION:Print Anthology Theme: The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power and Fragility of Memories\n\n\n\n\n  \nAnd it all stared back. We’ve met before\, my memory \nstarted to say\, somewhere. . . . \nAnd then I stopped: my father’s eyes were gray \nExcerpt from William Stafford’s poem “Fall Journey\,” originally published in Prairie Schooner\, Vol. 31\, No. 1\, Spring 1957 \nPoet + writer Kip Knott wants your memories. More precisely\, he wants your philosophical musings on memory for tiny wren lit’s next print anthology\, The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power and Fragility of Memories. \nMemories can stop us dead in our tracks with their epiphanies. Memories can also be as fragile + fleeting as words that hang for a moment before our face in the cold of a winter’s breath. William Stafford’s poem “Fall Journey” captures the electric jolt that can come with a sudden memory. Take a look at Kip’s own memory poem “Early Onset Ghost Town” published in ONE ART. \nFocus more on the nature of memory over detailing specific memories—memory formation\, loss of memory\, sensory memories\, short- or long-term memories\, memory recall\, etc. Include imagery + words that captivate or surprise\, delight or evoke certain emotions. \nSubmit up to six (6) tiny poems in a single Word document (.doc or .docx or .pdf). Each poem should be on its own separate page\, single-spaced\, + in 12-point font\, nothing fancy. Work should be your own + unpublished. Before you submit\, please read our FAQ page.  \nEach featured poet will receive a free contributor’s copy + 50% off for additional copies.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to River Mouth Review. Theme: "Local"
DESCRIPTION:We welcome poetry from both new and experienced poets! \nPoems are selected not only for their individual qualities\, but also in conjunction with the other poems chosen for each issue. Please consider that your poems\, if declined\, may simply not be the best fit for this publication at this time and place. \nSUBMIT : No more than 3 poems\, all in one single document\, with page breaks in between each poem. All forms of poetry are encouraged; read previous issues for a sense of our general vibe. Make sure your poems are as finished as you believe they can be before submitting. Very occasionally\, we may ask you to consider small edits before offering an acceptance. Complex forms and longer-line poems may need to be adjusted for our web platform. \nIf you have been previously published by RMR\, please don’t send more work for at least 2 years: we prioritize new-to-RMR voices. Please wait two months before inquiring about your submissions; however\, if you haven’t received a response by then\, feel free to send us a message via Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but PLEASE either withdraw your total submission as soon as possible if the poems are accepted elsewhere\, or use the message feature to let us know if you need to withdraw a single poem. Thank you!
