SUMMARY:PFN - Limit Experience Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Sexual Congruency and the Wilds Within
DESCRIPTION:Sexual congruency generally refers to the internal alignment and harmony between a person’s sexual identity\, orientation\, desires\, and outward expression. It’s when someone’s internal sense of their sexuality—how they feel\, who they’re attracted to\, what they want—is in sync with how they live and express it in the world. It doesn’t necessarily mean conformity to external norms or expectations\, but rather a kind of internal coherence\, authenticity\, and truthfulness to self. \nFor some\, sexual congruency might come naturally; for others\, it might require a long process of unlearning shame\, navigating societal pressures\, or coming to terms with identity. \nAt its core\, sexual congruency is about feeling whole and honest in one’s sexual self which requires yielding to inner truth while navigating the persona we present while engaging in external experience. \nWe’re interested in reviewing work that is daring yet not overly performative. Honest but willful in its exploration of edges. We look forward to hearing from you. \n  \nSubmission fee: $6.93

SUMMARY:PF - The Clayjar Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Rooted
DESCRIPTION:Submissions\n\ntheme\nOur Summer 2025 theme is Rooted. For our summer issue\, we invite you to consider the particularities of the people and places you know and love. What might it mean for you/us to emulate the “settling down” of Christ?Consider the ethos of writers such as Wendell Berry\, Annie Dillard\, and Marilynne Robinson to inform your work. Don’t shy away from your corner of the world\, however unassuming you may consider it. \nRead more about our summer theme here: Rooted \n\n\nguidelines\n\n\npoetry:\n\n\nSee “About” section to get a feel for what kind of poetry we are looking for \n\n\nUp to 3 poems per submission \n\n\nPoems can be any length \n\n\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted\, but please inform us if your piece is accepted elsewhere \n\n\n\n\nprose:\n\n\nProse is distinct from poetry in that it has a more natural flow of speech & structure; see “About” section to get a feel for what we are looking for \n\n\nLess than 1\,000 words \n\n\nOne prose piece per submission \n\n\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted\, but please let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere \n\n\n\n\nmusings:\n\n\nOur Musings are meant to set readers on a path to meditating on certain concepts or certain aspects of God’s character. Part of being a Christian is accepting that we don’t know everything\, that there are things we cannot explain\, Musings can tackle these areas and leave readers in a place of pondering. \n\n\nNo less than 500 words\, no more than 1\,000 \n\n\n\n\ncraft:\n\n\nCraft articles should explain a creative exercise or form that creative writers can use to hone their craft. Your post should include both a clear connection on how this exercise relates to the spiritual discipline of writing and an example of the completed exercise so your readers can have a practical model to follow. \n\n\nYou can also choose to explore the work of a particular writer in a Craft Article. Your post should directly reference one or more of the poet’s work and how they might be a model for us today\, both in a spiritual and practical approach to writing. \n\n\nNo less than 1\,500 words\, no more than 2\,000 \n\n\nCraft Submissions will be exclusively posted on our Substack and are open year-round. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo-nos\nWe do not consider works that include profanity\, dark humor\, explicit content\, or sexual innuendo. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Opal Age Tribune. Theme: Fata Morgana
DESCRIPTION:Fata Morgana is a mirage\, an Italian word and the Arthurian sorceress Morgan Le Fey’s creation. For this edition\, we’re embracing the allure of illusion and taking chances on castles in the sky.\nWe’re interpreting Fata Morgana as something that makes your soul feel like it’s going 200 kph while your body stays still. The embodiment of the feeling of yearning and dreaming after seeing a movie that really hits in the theater\, walking away with a piece of your soul still sitting in chocolate shelled velvet seats. \nIt’s the moment before making a decision that will change the trajectory of your life\, or the memory of being seven years old and working up the courage to try sour candy for the first time. Or it’s serendipitous moments that you just can’t explain. \nWhat are we looking for? Send us your flash fiction\, eternity glimmers\, poetry\, inexplicable sensations\, soul whispers\, prose\, acts of free will\, theoretical essays\, serendipitous happenings\, plays\, incomprehensible mystery\, paintings\, consciousness glimpses\, esoteric musings\, analysis of art that makes your heartbeat a little faster\, personal mythologies\, perpetual yearnings\, memory expressions\, immortality tips\, lore\, out of body experiences\, daily magics\, whimsy awakenings\, ancestral healing\, fashion\, messages from friendly spirits\, butterfly effects\, personal philosophies\, string theories\, wonders\, the indomitable human spirit. \nDo I have to be queer to submit?\nOpal Age is a space dedicated and created by queer community.\n\n\nWe use words like “queer” so as to not be limited in our scope. Further\, “queerness” is in alignment with our philosophy. After all\, we dream borderlessly. \nIt is not required to disclose your identity to us. This is to honor the private lives of those who submit. Please do not assume the identity\, in turn\, of those who are published. \nWe will always shamelessly be a queer creative collective but we know too well the confines of the closet and societal dangers queer individuals face internationally. \nIt is our assumption and practice that those who submit are in solidarity with the queer community; our struggles and our limitless capacity for joy. \n\n\n  \nWhat to include in your submission\nPlease send your work in an editable format. Google Docs are preferred. \nInclude: \n1. Preferred name to be published with your work (or mark “anonymous” if you don’t want to share your name) \n2. Your Pronouns \n3. Social Media Handle for others to follow you and credit your work (optional) \n4. Where you’re from \n5. Type of Submission: \nEx: Letters\, Theory\, Poetry\, etc. \n6. Any Other Info You Want to include with your work \n(Images\, Medium\, Inspirations\, etc.) \nWe will be in contact with you a few days after submissions end to let you know if your work will be included in the next edition. \nWho can submit? Anyone and everyone. Aspiring creatives or those who have already been in the spotlight. See our submissions page for more details. \n  \nIs there  word count requirement?\nNo minimum\, 2000 word maximum per piece. (for now…) >:) \n  \nReady to submit?\nSend your piece as a .jpg\, .png\, Google Doc\, or PDF to opalagetribune@gmail.com

SUMMARY:PF - Submissions Open for Phylum Press. Theme: Bryophytes / Phoenix Moss

SUMMARY:PFN - Brink Literary Journal Open for Submissions Engaging the Theme of Obsession
DESCRIPTION:Through Submittable\, we accept a variety of hybrid work from work that resists categories\, Nonfiction to Fiction\, from Poetry to Translation. \nWe are interested in writing that presses boundaries by using more than one medium to tell a story; work that looks and feels different on the page. Additionally\, we look for submissions that engage the issue’s theme and the notion of being on the brink. We’re open to a variety of approaches\, but we’re not interested in sentimental or ready-made verse and will not accept any work that include racist\, misogynistic\, homophobic\, or other forms of hateful language. Please submit only unpublished pieces and notify us if your simultaneous submission is accepted elsewhere. \nBrink is open for hybrid and cross-genre submissions of any length and style engaging the theme of obsession. \nAt first glance\, obsession indicates preoccupation. It gestures toward desire. Obsessions command our attention\, motivate our actions\, and are always top of mind. \nBut the etymology of obsession hints at a different story. The root of the word indicates the action of besieging\, or\, as we might say in today’s language\, sitting. When you obsess\, you place yourself before something—an object\, a person\, an idea\, a task. This posture is not passive; it is active. Your presence is an investment. Your presence indicates your desire to absorb\, encompass\, and command. To learn. \nPlease note\, we are not interested in stories of harassment\, stalking\, or unequal displays of power or abuse. Instead\, tell us about your obsession with exoskeletons or your childhood obsession with reading the dictionary. Interrogate your obsession with tacos. What was the last thing you actively sat down to learn? Show us the space around obsession: what leads to it? What happens when it fades? Take us to the brink of obsession. \n\nPoetry\nPlease send us 3-5 unpublished poems\, totaling no more than 10 pages\, in a single document. \n\nThe poetry readers at Brink look for and are drawn to:\nFresh\, surprising\, evocative language\nPoems that create their own atmosphere\nFormal inventiveness and adventurousness\nPoems with an emotional core\nPoems that enact or embody tension narratively\, formally\, or emotionally\nPoems that give us a new understanding of what a poem can be\n\n\nFiction\nPlease submit no more than one piece that does not exceed 3\,000 words.\n\nNonfiction\nWe’re looking for work that reignites our idea of what an essay can do or be. We’re particularly excited about flash essays\, ekphrasis nonfiction\, lists\, diary entries\, erasures\, manifestos\, intense lyricism\, auto-theory\, translations\, and revelatory ruptures in form and syntax that breaks\, and remakes\, language anew. \nPlease submit no more than one piece that does not exceed 3\,000 words.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Spoon Knife Anthology Series Now Accepting Submissions on the Theme: Polarities
DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: Spoon Knife 10\n\n\nAutonomous Press is now accepting submissions of short fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and poetry for the 10th volume of Spoon Knife\, our annual genre-bending lit anthology. \nPlease read this whole page carefully before submitting; some details have changed this time around! \nTheme\nThe theme for Spoon Knife 10 will be Polarities. \nPolarities: pairs of opposite forces or qualities or tendencies. Good and evil. Love and hate. Life and death. Heroism and villainy. Feminine and masculine. Night and day. Vice and virtue. Old and new. Order and chaos. The public persona and the hidden shadow self. The mundane everyday world and that which lies beyond. \nWhat polarity lies at the heart of your story? In what ways does it manifest? What happens when the two sides of the polarity come into contact or conflict\, or when one transforms into the other? \nWhat We’re Looking For\nOne of the things that’s always set Spoon Knife apart from other anthology series is the wild diversity of genres represented in each volume. Each volume has its own theme\, and we aim to show how that theme can be woven into stories across multiple disparate genres. \nIn a given volume of Spoon Knife\, you might find the theme explored in tales of magical realism\, science fiction\, absurdist satire\, swords-and-sorcery\, historical romance\, and horror\, not to mention creative nonfiction and poetry. We especially love stories that defy established genre categories or creatively blend genres. \nUltimately\, our criteria for assessing a submission boil down to this: is it a good\, engaging\, and well-written story that plays with the volume’s theme in an interesting way? \nIf you’re not familiar with Spoon Knife\, please have a look at our most recent volume (that would be volume 8 at the moment\, since 9 is still in press) to get a sense of what we’re after. \nWhat We’re Not Looking For\nWe don’t accept simultaneous submissions\, or work that’s already been published elsewhere. \nWe don’t accept fanfic; any fictional characters or settings featured in your work must be your own original creations. \nThough we love well-written tales of social satire\, we don’t accept preachy or transparently didactic work that beats the reader over the head with some simplistic political lesson which could have been summed up in a social media post. \nSubmission Format\nWe only accept submissions in the form of Word documents (either .doc or .docx files). \nAll submissions must meet the following formatting criteria in order to be considered for publication: \n\n1-inch margins all around.\nNo headers\, footers\, or page numbers.\nNo title page\, just the title and your name at the beginning of the first page.\n12-point Times New Roman font.\nLine spacing set at 1.5 (not single-spaced or double-spaced).\nAbsolutely no underlining; use italics instead.\nFor em dashes\, please use the em dash character (not a hyphen or pair of hyphens)\, with no space in between the em dash and the surrounding words.\nUse serial commas (aka Oxford commas).\nThoroughly proofread and spell-check your submission before sending.\n\nNon-poetry submissions must also follow these formatting guidelines: \n\nFirst line of each paragraph indented this one doesn’t apply to poetry submissions.\nNo extra whitespace between paragraphs (i.e.\, only hit Return once after each paragraph)\n\nMaximum length for submissions is 10k words. Exception: You can assume this limit to be as flexible as you need it to be if you’re an author whom we’ve published in a previous Spoon Knife volume or whose submission the editors have actively solicited. \nSubmission Process\nEmail all submissions to info@autpress.com. The subject line of your email should be your name plus the words “Spoon Knife 10 Submission.” Because we get a ridiculous amount of email\, it’s important that you follow this email title format in order to prevent your submission from accidentally getting overlooked. \nDue to limited space and the large number of submissions each volume receives\, we’ll only accept one story per author. \nIf you’re submitting poetry\, you may send up to three poems (please send all of them in a single email). \nThere’s no need to send an author bio with your submission. If your submission is accepted\, we’ll be reaching out to you for a bio closer to the date of publication. \nOur editorial process for accepted submissions includes a close copy-edit. We’ll check in with you if it looks like there needs to be any change to your piece beyond basic typo fixes. Please note that we do not send pre-print author proofs. \nPayment and Rights\nPayment for accepted submissions will be $30 plus 1 cent per word\, sent near the time of the book’s release. You’ll also receive a free contributor copy of the book\, with the option of purchasing additional copies at a deeply discounted wholesale rate. \nYou retain the rights to reprint your work elsewhere in the future\, as long as you wait until at least six months after this volume of Spoon Knife is published. \nContributors will be notified of acceptance or rejection in January 2026. \nSpoon Knife 10 will be published in May 2026.

You may submit up to five poems and three prose pieces (all in separate files please). Poems shouldn’t be longer than 3 pages each\, and prose submissions should not be longer than 15 pages. Works in a different language are allowed (and encouraged!) but an English translation must be provided for our editors. If selected\, both versions will be published. Also\, if you submit a document\, please turn on sharing view for everyone. \nWe accept previously unpublished and previously published writing. For the former\, we ask for First North American Serial and Electronic Serial Rights\, and for the latter we ask for Second North American Serial and Electronic Serial Rights. Simultaneous submissions are allowed and encouraged. \nAI generated content is prohibited and we expect all work to be original! \ndates & deadlines\n \nThe deadline to submit is 7/31/2025 and we plan on publishing our first issue in late August. If you submit\, please expect an email response a month or two after submission with either a rejection\, acceptance\, or acceptance with edits (which is where if you choose\, we will work with you to edit the piece into something that aligns closer with the quality we are looking for).

SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs Seeking Submissions for their 20th Anniversary Edition on the Theme: Muse
DESCRIPTION:GENERAL GUIDELINES \n\nWe are looking for serious writers with an appreciation for language and the craft of writing. We want fiction with memorable characters and realistic plots\, poetry that is fresh and original\, and nonfiction that is both thoughtful and entertaining.\nWe will accept only writing that has been proofread for spelling and grammar. Trust us on this one. We keep our virtual machete very sharp for people who are grammatically challenged\, and we are not afraid to use it.\nHaving said that\, as an international ‘zine\, we accept differences in spelling usages (e.g. British vs American English) and will publish whatever is considered correct in an author’s home country.\nWe are not interested in explicit sexual content\, gratuitous violence\, or repetitive swearing\, unless it is essential to the plot and not included solely for shock value.\nPlease do not send us any of the following: poetry that sounds like it ought to be on a Hallmark card\, poetry you copied from a Hallmark card\, how-to articles\, first drafts of anything\, fanfiction\, anything full of sentimentality\, or religious and/or political propaganda disguised as fiction.\nThis ought to be obvious\, but only send us your own work\, humans. If you send us anything plagiarized or written by a robot\, remember we have a machete.\nWe do not accept previously published work. This includes not only formal publications in print and online journals\, but any pieces you may have posted to a blog\, personal website\, etc. If it’s already available to the public in some form\, we do not accept it.\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted by another journal.\nAs above\, we do not consider or accept submissions outside the specified submission period.\nWe reserve the right to make minor editorial changes without consultation\, where there are unintentional errors or inconsistencies in punctuation\, spelling or grammar. We will consult authors about anything more substantive.\nThe editors are all responsive to shameless flattery and to gifts of chocolate.\n\nPoetry Guidelines \nWe accept poetry of roughly 500 words or less\, although we are not terribly strict about this guideline.  We are rarely willing to be lenient with the theme when it comes to poetry\, and will do so only if the submission is very good. \nPlease note that we only accept three poems at any one time from a single author and\, for the most part\, publish only one poem from any one author per edition. \nFiction Guidelines \nWe accept fiction of roughly 5\,000 words or less related to the theme of the issue.   The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar/spelling\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \nPlease submit only one piece of fiction at a time\, and ensure stories are formatted as requested below. \nNonfiction Guidelines \nWe accept creative nonfiction of 3\,000 words or less. Halfway Down the Stairs is specifically looking for essays and memoir with a strong voice and a unique point of view. We publish well-written\, honest writing that inspires emotion. Humor is also appreciated. \nWe are not looking for stream of consciousness rants of a political or religious nature. Save those for your blog. We respond negatively to spelling and grammatical errors\, so please proofread your work closely if you wish to have it seriously considered. \nAs of 2018 we began accepting nonfiction submissions outside of the issue theme.  Submissions within the theme are still encouraged\, but high quality submissions outside the theme will also be considered for publication. Please note this only applies to nonfiction submissions. \nPlease submit only one piece of nonfiction at a time. \nSUBMISSIONS PROCESS\n \n\nPlease send all writing submissions to halfway . stairs @ gmail . com.\nDO NOT send your work as an attachment. (More details on why under point 5 below.)\nYour subject line should look like this: submission\, genre\, and title of your piece.  (Example: “Submission\, Fiction\, Monsoon Nights.”)  If you are submitting multiple poems\, state the number of poetry submissions instead of the title of the piece. (Example:  “Submission\, Three Poems by William C. Fredrikson.”) Please do not submit multiple genres in a single e-mail; if you would like to submit poetry and fiction\, send us two separate e-mails.\nWithin the body of your e-mail\, give us the following information: the title(s) of your submission(s)\, the name under which you wish to be published\, your e-mail address\, if the piece you are submitting has ever been published elsewhere\, if the piece you are submitting is a simultaneous submission\, and a brief introduction written in the 3rd person point of view.  If you are submitting multiple poems\, include these statements at the beginning of your e-mail\, and follow it with the actual poems. Example:\n\nThree Poems \nby William C. Fredrikson. \ncrazywillie57@gmail.com. \nNo\, the submitted poems have never published elsewhere. \nMonsoon Nights is not a simultaneous submission.  Elsewhere and Lady Luck are both simultaneous submissions.William C. Fredrikson teaches grade seven social studies in British Columbia.   His students think he looks exactly like Jack Nicholson.  In his spare time\, William enjoys playing the guitar\, reading Hemingway\, studying World War II history\, and making fun of reality television. \n\nIf we do choose to publish your piece\, we will also publish your biography. Your e-mail address is confidential\, and we will never publish it or give it out.\nAfter your introduction\, please post your piece within the body of your e-mail.  Please do not send your work as an attachment.  Please single space your work\, double spacing between paragraphs.  Please do not indent your paragraphs.\nProvide a content warning if it’s warranted: Let us know upfront if there is some kind of explicit content in your submission which we should be warned about in advance. We’ll leave this up to your discretion\, but examples could include abuse\, neglect\, self harm\, or violence.\nOptional: Let us know how you found us.  We’re curious as to where our readers and writers are coming from.\nOptional: Let us know if there’s a kind of image you visualize with your piece\, or even if you have an image you would like us to use if it is published (guidelines below). We reserve the right to choose alternatives – but we are happy to consider your suggestions.\n\nWe aim to respond to all submissions within 4-8 weeks of receipt\, and you will never wait more than three months for a response.

SUMMARY:PFN - About Place Journal Invites Submissions for Volume VIII\, Issue IV\, “On Freedom.”
DESCRIPTION:All around us\, we see and hear calls for freedom from many different voices and different directions. Some of these calls are frightening; some are inspiring. How are we to understand this “freedom” moment? We seek poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and hybrid works that question\, reimagine\, and embody what freedom and unfreedom mean in our complex world. \nWe’re looking for work that explores freedom’s multidimensional nature—what historian Timothy Snyder distinguishes as negative freedom and positive freedom. Negative freedom is “freedom from” (oppression\, constraint\, violence)\, while positive freedom is “freedom to” (create\, speak\, love\, flourish). \nWe’re also interested in work that engages freedom as a process. Freedom requires cultivating “habits of freedom” (Snyder)—daily practices that sustain and expand our capacity for liberty. Author Maggie Nelson also understands freedom not as a fixed state but as an ongoing practice. \nWe view the act of creation itself as a habit or practice of freedom—a claiming of voice and space. We invite submissions that not only speak about freedom but express it through formal innovation\, boundary-crossing\, and aesthetic risk-taking. \nWe welcome explorations of what philosopher Hannah Arendt called “inwardness as a place of absolute freedom” as well as work that maps the external territories of political and social freedom. We’re interested in how art can articulate author bell hooks’ idea that “awareness is central to the process of love as the practice of freedom.” \nWe invite you to join us in the radical act of creative freedom\, to challenge constraint and to imagine liberation in both bold and quiet ways. \nAll submissions should be previously unpublished and should engage with the theme of freedom in thoughtful and nuanced ways. We welcome work in various forms and styles\, from traditional to experimental. \nWork must be submitted via Submittable by August 1\, 2025. \nAbout Place Journal is committed to amplifying diverse voices and perspectives. SUMMARY:PF - ette Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme "Roulette"
DESCRIPTION:ON ROULETTE: \nGames of chance\, fate\, the unknown. We’re interested in reversals of fortune\, luck\, the house. We like the glamor of old films and the lucky charm. Or consider roulette as a small wheel\, an engraver’s tool\, a stamp device. We are not interested in Russian roulette (thanks)\, but all else goes. Spin the wheel of your imagination and send us your best work. \n\nEtymology \nroulette (n.) \n“game of chance involving a revolving disk on a table\,” 1745; earlier “small wheel” (1734)\, from French roulette “gambling game played with a revolving wheel\,” an extended sense; “small wheel\,” from Old French roelete “little wheel” (12c.)\, formed on model of Late Latin rotella\, diminutive of Latin rota “wheel” (see rotary). An older name for this game was roly-poly or rouly-pouly (1712).(http://www.etymonline.com/word/roulette) \nDefinition \nroulette \nnoun \n\na game of chance played at a table marked off with numbers from 1 to 36\, one or two zeros\, and several other sections affording the players a variety of betting opportunities\, and having in the center a revolving\, dish like device roulette wheel into which a small ball is spun to come to rest finally in one of the 37 or 38 compartments\, indicating the winning number and its characteristics\, as odd or even\, red or black\, and between 1 and 18 or 19 and 36.\na small wheel\, especially one with sharp teeth\, mounted in a handle\, for making lines of marks\, dots\, or perforations:engravers’ roulettes; a roulette for perforating sheets of postage stamps.\nPhilately. a row of short cuts\, in which no paper is removed\, made between individual stamps to permit their ready separation. (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/roulette)\n\n\nSome History \nIn 1655\, the first\, crude version of the roulette wheel was created by the French mathematician and inventor\, Blaise Pascal\, in his quest to create a perpetual motion machine—or a machine\, that once started\, could not be stopped\, and would run on its own mechanism. Others added to the invention\, turning it into the classic rouge et noir casino game. It gained popularity with King Charles III of Monaco\, who built a casino that housed a beautiful roulette wheel. He added a zero to the wheel. This tilted roulette in the house’s favor\, and Charles’s kingdom expanded. \n\n\n\nSubmission Guidelines\n\n-ette loves small form: prose poetry\, micro and flash fiction. To get an idea of what we like\, please read our latest issue. Before sending work\, check out the theme.\nPlease send one flash or up to two micro fictions and/or prose poems (we do not accept poetry or nonfiction submissions at this time).\nTotal submission word count should not exceed 1\,000 words.\nSend your work as a PDF. Include your name and contact information on the first page. Number the pages. Use a common\, 12-point font. Please double-space fiction. Prose poetry may be single-spaced.\nPlease include a short bio as well as your social media handles with your submission.\nWork submitted to -ette must be wholly original. Do not submit plagiarized or AI-generated work to -ette.\nWe take simultaneous submissions\, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.\nRegular response times vary\, but we try to respond within 1–3 months.\nIf your work is accepted for publication\, we ask for first-time publication rights and the right to retain the work in our archives. If republished elsewhere\, please credit -ette review.\nWe ask that writers only submit once per submission period. Contributors should wait six months to resubmit.\n-ette will not read or publish racist\, homophobic\, anti-trans\, or misogynistic writing.\n-ette is a tiny operation of two\, so unfortunately\, we cannot offer payment at this time. You will\, however\, receive the drawing that accompanies your published piece. In case of publication\, Beth will want to send it to you.\nTo hear more from -ette editors\, Beth Hahn and Nora Maynard\, on what we’re looking for\, listen to pod-ette Episode 1 here.\nReady? Email work to submissions@ettereview.com. In the subject line\, include your name and the category of submission (fiction\, micro\, prose poetry).

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Blood & Bourbon. Theme: Appetite
DESCRIPTION:Appetite for…\n\n\n\nWhat do you hunger for? \nIn this issue\, we want writing that devours. We’re talking about the kind of cravings that keep you up at night: for touch\, for power\, for memory\, for something you can’t name. Appetite isn’t just physical—it’s emotional\, existential\, maybe even dangerous. \nThis theme isn’t just about food\, though we welcome your feasts and rituals. It’s about the want that lingers\, the desire that warps\, the need that cannot be tamed. Characters who want too much. Or not enough. Narrators who deny themselves until they snap. \nWe’re interested in the thin line between indulgence and survival. Between love and addiction. \nWe dare you to get messy. \n  \n\nSubmissions\n\n\nBlood & Bourbon is here to showcase all things hard\, gritty\, and raw. That time you got in a bar fight\, that time you went to an S&M club\, that time you had an opinion that sparked a heated argument over a family dinner. We’re actively seeking submissions in the following categories: \n\nShort fiction or non-fiction\, 5000 words or fewer\nOpinion pieces or essays on any subjects\, 5000 words or fewer\nPoetry\, up to three pieces per submission\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions and reprints. We provide author copies upon request with a small donation of $5. \nWe are now open for submissions until August 2\, 2025. The theme of the next issue is Appetite. \nWe’re interested in diverse voices and want to hear from you regardless of what you look like\, where you’re from\, what you believe\, who you like to fuck\, et cetera. \nSend your material to bandbsubmissions (AT) gmail.com. Your submission should be attached as a .doc\, .docx or .rtf file\, with your name\, address\, email address\, the story title (if applicable) and total word count at the top of the first page. Visual art submissions should be attached as hi-res .jpgs or .tiffs. Include a 50-word bio in the body of the email or in the Word doc.

SUMMARY:PFN - Meat for Tea: The Valley Review Seeking Submissions. This Issue's Theme: Faux
DESCRIPTION:We seek original submissions in multiple genres for the “Faux” issue. Do know that themes are not to be taken literally. We encourage submitters to simply have fun with the theme\, or ignore it entirely. \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES – PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY: \n\nWriters: Writing submissions should be works of poetry and short prose no longer than 1500 words in length\,\n8000 words for short fiction and essays\, 1200 words for flash and microfiction. \nPlease only send CLEAN COPY. We do not edit copy.\nIf a work is accepted for publication\, it appears letter-for-letter as submitted.\nSubmissions with obvious typographic errors will be rejected.\nWe reserve the right to format copy to our layout standards.\nPlease also note that due to tight deadline and printing timelines\,\nrevisions likely will not be even possible after a work is accepted.\nTherefore\, please only submit works you’re fully confident in having published. \nAll writing should be sent as an editable document\,  ideally Microsoft Word Format (.doc or .docx\,) or RTF.\nBe aware that any formatting you use in your document will be changed to fit our layout specifications.\nDon’t get fancy unless you have something that is required for the piece (such as special formatting for a poem.)\nWe STRONGLY encourage very general formatting for most written work.\nYour font will be changed\, we don’t use indents for paragraph breaks\, and we will re-format as needed.\nPlease keep the formatting simple.\nSee below\, as well. \nEmbedded images in a text document might lead to rejection\, due to difficulty in layout.\nIf you feel you must have embedded images\, please email us before submitting. \nIMPORTANT: PDF is NOT an acceptable file format\, except for the rare case of a work depending strictly on physical formatting and font(s).\nPlease email us FIRST if you want to submit a PDF for a text piece.\n(WHEN IN DOUBT\, DON’T SEND PDF UNLESS YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE TEXT MUST BE IN A STRICT FORMAT.\nThis basically means\, if you’re using unusual fonts and/or formatting that is absolutely critical to the piece.) \nSO:\nDISCLAIMER: We shall still reserve the right to reformat PDF submissions to fit our layout standards.\nSubmitting as PDF is not an assurance that we will print the item as it looks in the PDF. Additionally\, if we are forced to re-format from a PDF we will not be responsible for errors in the format conversion.\nIf you have questions about this policy regarding your work\, please contact us via email before submitting. \nMust include a third-person bio\, 100 words maximum. Pronoun preferences are encouraged! \nNo submitting written work via email or a file transfer service unless requested. Please use Duosumo. \nDue to time constraints\, physical submissions via regular mail will NOT be considered for inclusion. \nSimultaneous submissions are accepted as long as the submitter notifies us IMMEDIATELY  upon their work being accepted elsewhere. The best way to notify us of a piece accepted elsewhere when submitting  through Duosuma is to immeditely withdraw the piece. There is no assurance we will know it is withdrawn unless\nyou withdraw it directly through Duosuma. Email is inadaquate for withdrawls for Duosuma submissions.\nIf we accept a submission\, it will be printed. Our timeline is so tight that there is no other option. \nPlease note: you are free to withdraw a piece for any reason via Duosuma  unless we have accepted it for publication. We don’t “hold work hostage”. \nAlso note: due to the frequently large volume of submissions and our limited publication space\, sometimes we may not get to accepting or rejecting a submission during the submission cycle in which it was presented. \n\n  \n\nNumber of Pieces: Up to 5 pieces per submission.\nSingle File: Not required; may include a separate file/link for each piece.\nAnonymous submissions are not required.\nSimultaneous submissions are allowed.\nReprints are not allowed.\nMultiple entries are allowed.\nAI-assisted works are not allowed.\n\n\nSubmission fee: $4.85

SUMMARY:FN - Call for "Short Takes" Submissions to Persimmon Tree: An Online Magazine of the Arts by Women Over Sixty on the Theme: Putting It All Away
DESCRIPTION:Issue #76–Fall 2025–Putting It All Away \n\nThere comes a time when we must put away all the stuff that has grown around us\, a time for clearing the decks. Often\, that means cleaning out the closet or the so-called “guest” room\, or putting away last season’s clothes. It can equally refer to our lives: to freeing ourselves from the overbearing or annoying people who just make us feel bad\, or the surfeit of tasks and obligations we’ve taken on (“I’m just a gal who can’t say no”). Or it can refer to our inner selves: it can mean breaking old\, bad habits\, or silencing the squalling inner child. January is traditionally the moment for grand resolutions promising self-improvement\, but fall is a season for new beginnings\, too\, with summer ending (in the northern hemisphere\, at least) and school starting up again. What have you put away? What should you? \nProjected publication date: Wednesday\, September 17\, 2025\n \n\n\n\n  \n\nShort Takes\nShort Takes are usually short prose pieces\, fiction or non-fiction (250-500 words)\, but can also be topical poetry\, sometimes even drawings or photography. We’re especially interested in hearing about your experiences\, but you can include your thoughts\, dreams\, ideas and opinions. Humor and irony are always appreciated! \nPlease read and follow these instructions carefully. We regret that we cannot accept any submission that does not follow these guidelines. In particular\, make sure that the address on your email is correct. \nYour submission must be under 500 words. Submit it to us as a Word document; be sure your name\, address\, phone number\, and email address are all in the Word document. Send us the document by an email addressed to shorttakes@persimmontree.org\, and type “Short Take” in the subject line of the email. \nInclude a headshot and short bio (no more than 50 words) in the email. \nYou must be subscribed to submit; click here to subscribe. Submissions and subscriptions are free.

SUMMARY:PN - Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review Seeking Submissions on: Suburb Nation
DESCRIPTION:Call For Papers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for Papers — Suburb Nation\n\nDeadline: August 15\, 2025 (Pacific Time) \nSubmission length: 7\,000-8\,000 words (including works cited and notes) in either English or French \n  \nCanadian fiction\, film\, and television increasingly abound with representations of suburban life\, such as Sort Of\, co-created by and starring playwright Bilal Baig; Run the Burbs\, co-created by and starring Andrew Phung; the film adaptations of Catherine Hernandez’s novel Scarborough and David Chariandy’s novel Brother; Larissa Lai’s speculative post-Greater Vancouver novels Salt Fish Girl and Tiger Flu; and Mona Awad’s 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl\, a collection of linked stories mostly set in “Misery Saga\, which is what you’re allowed to call Mississauga if you live there” (1). Foregrounding the lives of people of colour\, often first- and second-generation immigrants\, these recent depictions centre the suburbs in Canadian experience\, offering more varied representations than the stifling\, empty periphery of earlier treatments\, such as Margaret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye\, Barbara Gowdy’s Falling Angels\, or even Dionne Brand’s What We All Long For. In her monograph Canadian Suburban\, Cheryl Cowdy quotes the speaker in Brand’s long poem Thirsty to describe how Canadian suburban imaginaries are marginalized by the assumption that the suburbs are “prefabricated from no great narrative” (xii). They seemingly lack culture and are rarely associated with “dissident artistic or poetic expression\,” Cowdy points out; more often\, suburbs serve as the butt of jokes and are seen as fertile ground for comedians\, such as Mike Myers\, Jim Carrey\, and the pop band The Barenaked Ladies (xii). \nThis special journal issue will examine literary approaches to suburban life in Canada across a range of mediums\, genres\, and periods\, paying attention to the suburbs as both an imaginative and a material form. We are especially interested in considering how the mid-twentieth-century popular representation of the suburb as a white\, middle-class\, automobiled enclave has been written otherwise across varied experiences of racialization\, diaspora\, and generation—and in the era of fossil-fueled climate change. What dreams and diasporas land immigrants and Indigenous people in suburbs? What histories are disrupted and which are forged in suburban lives and spaces? How do queer and trans people find and write themselves through suburbia? What other places and social lives are relationally entangled in the suburbs—in social connections\, in memory\, in colonial displacements\, and in material economies of labour\, production\, consumption\, waste\, and emissions? How are suburban arrivals and departures—and pasts and futures—narrated? What poetic practices engage suburban form and its social relations? \nWe invite papers of 7\,000-8\,000 words\, in English or in French\, that join us in asking: If Canada is a suburban nation\, what are its suburban stories? \n\nSubmission Guidelines\nAll submissions to Canadian Literature must be original\, unpublished work. Essays should follow current MLA bibliographic format (MLA Handbook\, 9th ed.). Word length for articles is 4\,000-8\,000 words\, which includes endnotes and works cited. \nPoetry\nWe accept submissions of original poems from Canadian citizens and permanent residents. All poetry submissions must include a short biography that lists previous publications or\, for as yet unpublished poets\, a few lines that give context for your work. \nDue to space considerations\, poems of 1-2 pages in length are preferred. Please do not include more than 5 poems per submission. Files must also be in Portable Document Format (.pdf) to ensure proper spacing and formatting. \nAccepted poems will be published in the journal and on the website. Note that your Social Insurance Number will be required for a small honorarium. Separate arrangements for payment will be made if your poem has been accepted for publication. \nArticles\nInclude the following information in your submission:\n\nAuthor bio (50-100 words)\nAbstract (maximum 150 words)\nFor special/themed issue submissions: (1) Specify which call for papers you are responding to\, and (2) indicate whether you would like your paper to be considered for a future general issue if it is not accepted into the special/themed issue\n\nSubmission length\n\nWord count: Between 7\,000-8\,000 words (including endnotes and references)\nShorter works between 2\,000-3\,000 words may be submitted for consideration for the Opinions & Notes section (specify upon submission). These are not peer reviewed so they are also not considered scholarly articles.\n\nDocument formatting\n\nFont: 12 pt.\, Times New Roman (or another default font such as Calibri or Arial)\nSpacing: Double-spaced\nPage layout: Standard\, with 1-inch margins on each side and 8.5 x 11-inch dimensions\nFile format: Word document (.doc or .docx)\nCitations: Formatted according to the latest edition of MLA style\n\nAnonymize your paper\nIf necessary\, submit an original version of your paper and an anonymized version with identifiable information removed\, such as acknowledgments sections. \nIn Microsoft Word documents\, author information must be removed from the file. \n\nOn Windows:\n\nGo to “Options” under the Tools menu.\nGo to “Security.”\nUnder “Privacy Options\,” select the box “Remove personal information from the file on save\,” then click “OK.”\nSave the file.\n\n\nOn Mac:\n\nGo to “Preferences” under the Word menu.\nGo to “Security.”\nUnder “Privacy Options\,” select the box “Remove personal information from the file on save\,” then click “OK.”\nSave the file.To ensure the integrity of the anonymous peer-review process\, every effort should be made to anonymize the identities of authors and reviewers.\n\n\n\nFeel free to contact us if you have questions about what is considered identifiable information or want support anonymizing your document. \n\n\n\n\nSubmission Checklistcles
