SUMMARY:N - Five Minutes Contest for Fall 2023. Theme: "Away"
DESCRIPTION:100 words about 5 minutes of your life\, on the theme of AWAY. Interpret any way you’d like. Submit up to five entries. \nSend us your 100-word piece about five minutes in your life and we’ll consider it for publication. Guidelines: \n• Piece should be 100 words\, formatted as one paragraph. Not 99. Not 101. Title\, which is not part of 100 words\, should be 15 characters maximum\, including spaces. \n• There should be one identifiable moment (approx. five minutes) that’s the crux of the piece. \n• We don’t publish:\n—retellings of dreams\n—retellings of things you imagined\n—retellings of things you saw without any reference to you/your response (we want you in the piece!)\n—erotic memoir\n—pieces containing graphic violence\n—pieces from the perspective of abusers\n—poetry or fiction\, though we are interested in poetic prose and memoir masquerading as fiction\n—pieces which overtly promote a theological or political ideology\n—pieces in which you tell us someone else’s memory as told to you\n—pieces that contain hate speech\n—slurs. \n• Each piece should be formatted without line breaks;\none block of text\, not multiple\, short paragraphs. \n• -We are receiving many (beautiful) submissions about the last time a writer saw a beloved person\, about putting a pet to sleep\, and about the quiet moments in the morning before the day starts. Due to the high number of submissions on these themes\, these pieces are less likely to receive acceptances. We challenge you to take risks with your voice\, your structure\, your chronology … anything that might set your piece apart. \nA panel of contest readers will read/score pieces. The top ten pieces will be sent to Contest Judge Karen Zey who will choose the winner as well as two runners-up. All top ten pieces will run in Five Minutes. \nThe winner will receive 2/5 the contest entry fees\, or $2 per entry. If 2 people enter\, the fees will add up to $10 and the winner will receive $4. If 100 people enter\, that amount will be $500 and the winner will receive $200. [Boring explainer: Submittable keeps $.99 per $5 entry. Five Minutes keeps $2.01 per entry. Winner wins $2 per entry.] \nPlease read Five Minutes’ guidelines for our regular submissions\, which apply here\, except you MAY submit even if you have pieces upcoming in Five Minutes\, and you may submit up to five times. We will return your entry and request a re-format if guidelines haven’t been followed. \nThe contest runs October 1-31; our regular submissions portal will open again on November 1.

SUMMARY:PF - EcoTheo Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Friendship
DESCRIPTION:We consider submissions of poetry and prose that explores questions of ecology and spirituality from within and outside all religious traditions. We are delighted by compelling stories and bewitching poems that reflect our values of curiosity\, justice\, and community. We consider all submissions for publication on our website and/or in our quarterly print issues. \nWINTER 2024 Theme: FRIENDSHIP \nAristotle said that friendship is one soul abiding in two bodies\, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge referred to it as a sheltering tree. Friendship transcends species; think of companion plantings\, where fennel and dill cheer each other on; or your favorite winsome image of chimpanzees and tigers loafing and inviting their souls. For our winter issue\, EcoTheo Review seeks fiction\, essays\, and poems that explore the tenderness\, sustenance\, vicissitudes\, and surprises of our friendships. We want to know about your human and more-than-human besties\, the trees and critters that have been with you through thick and thin. From October 15th-31st we look forward to considering your work! \nEcoTheo Review appreciates the trust involved in our relationships with authors and readers. We know how difficult it can be to share work\, especially of a sensitive nature. If the work you are sending us depicts traumatic events\, whether personal or historical in nature\, we invite you to consider including a Content Warning for our editors. Should we choose to publish such work\, we want to demonstrate care for our readers as well\, and our Publication Contract will include an opportunity for you to offer a Content Warning. These will be included when we publish the work\, online and/or in print\, as well as when we share the work through our social media accounts. We are grateful for the opportunity to consider your work. \nPlease allow at least 3 months while we review your submission. Our editors are all volunteers\, with other work\, family\, and creative commitments. We appreciate your patience as we give all submissions the consideration they deserve. We do not accept previously published work\, but we do accept simultaneous submissions. Please notify us promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. \nPoetry\nPoets must limit submissions to two per calendar year. Each submission may not include more than 3 poems and may not exceed 10 pages total. Poets who exceed the number of submissions per year\, the number of poems per submission\, or the number of pages per submission will be rejected. \n\nSubmit poems as a single file.\nAll efforts are made to preserve formatting.\nAllow 3 months before querying on the status of your work.\n\nProse\nWe welcome works of fiction and creative nonfiction of up to 5\,000 words. \nOur Ecology Editor Michelle Kim Hall is particularly interested in essays\, book reviews\, and interviews drawn from the fields of ecology.

SUMMARY:PFN - Open Minds Quarterly Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Identity"
DESCRIPTION:The theme for Winter 2024 is: Identity \nHow has your experience with mental health challenges\, mental illness\, madness\, and/or neurodivergence shaped your identity? How do other identities intersect with your experience? Have mental health challenges\, mental illness\, madness\, and/or neurodivergence affected the way you see yourself? What about others? Do you feel your identity is understood by others? What would you like to tell them about it? We want to here all about how identity affects your lived experiences. \nWe encourage you to consider this theme and incorporate it into your work. Pieces that follow the theme will have a much higher chance of being selected for this issue than pieces that don’t follow the theme. \nNonfiction\, reviews\,  and letters\, should relate specifically to experiences of madness or mental health challenges. Poetry\, fiction\, or visual art submissions do not need to focus on madness/mental health\, but we may prioritize pieces that fit our mandate and this issue’s theme. \nWe focus on publishing contributors with lived experience and work based on first-hand experience. We do not publish work that tells other people’s stories for them or tells second-hand stories about them. \nOpen Minds Quarterly is a literary journal that features explorations of life in a mad world. We welcome writing and art from people with lived experience of what is variously called mental health challenges\, mental illness\, madness\, and neurodiversity. We strive to promote these voices and perspectives by publishing work based on first-hand lived experience. \nYou may submit to ONE of these categories per submission period: \n\nNonfiction: 1 piece limit\, 3000 word maximum.\nFiction: 1 piece limit\, 3000 word maximum.\nPoetry: 4 piece limit\, 96 lines maximum per poem (this includes stanza breaks\, but not the title).

SUMMARY:PFN - The First Line Literary Journal Seeking Submissions with the First Line: "It Was the Farthest North They Had Ever Been"
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of The First Line is to jump start the imagination–to help writers break through the block that is the blank page. Each issue contains short stories that stem from a common first line; it also provides a forum for discussing favorite first lines in literature. The First Line is an exercise in creativity for writers and a chance for readers to see how many different directions we can take when we start from the same place. \nSubmission Guidelines\n \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story or poem be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \n\n\n\n\nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four to five weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote to our international writers: Postage cost for sending author copies overseas is a little high\, so we are reducing international author payment by the amount it would cost to send one author copy overseas. However\, if you would like to receive an electronic version of the issue (PDF) instead of a hard copy\, author payment will not change.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Hunger: A Journal Seeking Submissions that are Collaborations
DESCRIPTION:What we hunger for:\nThe Hunger publishes visceral writing. The theme of “hunger” is not confined only to food\, but hungers and thirsts of all kinds: the craving for connection\, the human need to be filled or emptied\, the devastating desires that define our most alive moments. Hungers can be sexual\, romantic\, familial\, individualistic\, spiritual\, creative\, sorrowful\, conflicted\, humanistic\, and/or existential. \nWe are excited by the lyrical\, the experimental\, the strange\, the uncomfortable\, the vulnerable\, and just plain\, motherfucking honesty. Send us work that bleeds. We want to be devoured. \nWe nominate for Best of the Net and aim to widely promote our contributors’ work. We strive to create a writing community that is founded on principles of inclusion and diversity\, and gives a platform to a wide range of voices. We encourage all people\, regardless of race\, gender identity\, faith\, sexual orientation\, or political affiliation to submit. \nFeed us:\nFiction (up to 5\,000 words)\nPoetry (3-5 poems\, in one document)\nNonfiction (up to 5\,000 words) \nThe Hunger began as a collaboration between two best friends. Now\, as we prepare to publish its final issue\, we want to honor the spirit of our inception by inviting submissions of literary collaborations of all kinds: poems\, stories\, essays\, hybrid work\, and everything in between. The collaborative aspect can take whatever shape makes sense for the creation of the work; the only rule is that the piece(s) must be created by 2 or more people working together. \nThe submission window is open Sept 15 – Nov 1. The final issue will be published in December 2023. \nEach selected contributor will receive a token compensation of $20\, to be paid via Paypal\, Cashapp\, or Venmo.

SUMMARY:PFN - Fathom Magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Patience
DESCRIPTION:Want to write for Fathom? We’d love to hear from you. First\, it’s best if you become familiar with the type of content we publish. Then\, read our style guide for a checklist of what we are looking for in your writing. \nAt Fathom we publish articles\, personal essays\, profiles\, interviews\, book reviews\, Bible exposition\, theological and/or historical analysis\, poetry\, and short stories. The work we prefer often utilizes personal narrative to communicate the deeper aspects of the Christian faith and to draw our readers into the nuance surrounding an idea. We love writing that examines the unexplored angle and delivers a well-told story. \nWe suggest familiarizing yourself with our publication before submitting your work. Scanning through past issues of Fathom will give you an idea of the tone\, voice\, and approach we tend to take. And looking through our most recent issues will show you what our contributors have recently covered and how you can add to — not repeat — the ideas already in our publication. \nOur audience is made up of thoughtful\, curious Christians who desire to craft a multi-faceted life of faith. They typically want to engage their minds\, connect with artful expression\, and consider a new perspective or experience. \nWe aim to publish pieces that challenge our audience’s expectations\, enthrall our readers with a story\, and put together strands of thinking our readers haven’t thought to combine. We want to give all people who make their way to Fathom a reason to engage their minds and their emotions. \nSpecs\nOur standard articles fall between 1\,000 and 1\,600 words. Short stories should be at least 3\,000 words. Poems vary in length and style. \nIn the case of poetry\, please send the completed poem.  Poems vary in length and style.

SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions\, Nov. 6-12: The Fabulist Flash
DESCRIPTION:The Fabulist Flash\, a new flash-fiction project from The Fabulist Words & Art\, welcomes submissions from November 6-12 for fantastical and speculative writings of up to 1\,000 words. \nThe Fabulist Flash will debut in 2024\, and run in parallel to our current short-fiction programming. See below for program details. \nWord Count & Rate\n• We’re offering a flat fee of $100 for stories of up to 1\,000 words (the equivalent of an SFWA-qualifying rate of $0.10/word)\, payable upon contracted acceptance. \n• Going above the word count is fine if you need a little headroom to take the story home\, but it’s in your interest to keep it tight\, as the flat fee is firm. \n• You can review our flash-fiction contract here. \nWhat We’re Looking For\n• Fantastical and speculative fiction\, including science fiction\, fantasy\, horror\, myth\, fairy-story\, magic realism\, literary fabulism\, and genre/subgenre remixes. \n• Evocative and intriguing scenes\, settings\, places. \n• Clear\, efficacious writing that doesn’t shy away from the poetry within prose. \n• Wide-ranging human (or sentient) experiences that we care about\, or at least feel. \n• Yeah: Odysseys\, revelation\, transformation\, dilemma/struggle\, fluid dualities. \n• Nah: Grimdark\, military\, cops\, vengeance\, power trips. \n• Exploded/deconstructed cliches of any of the foregoing … \nIf you’re not sure where your story lands in these various target zones — just send us your best. Great work will shine through. \nPlease Think Twice\, We’ve Really Seen Quite Enough Of\n• Zombies\, zombie apocalypse\, teen vampire/werewolf romance\, cute Cthulhu/nice baby Elder God\, etc. \n• Splatter/gore/brutality \n• Virtual-reality visitations with the beloved deceased \n• Mundane fantasies of revenge\, sex\, financial and business success\, etc. \n• “Another Friday Night at the Elftown Police Station” — or really anything that takes fantastical archetypes or plot devices and makes them vernacular or silly: drinking hard liquor and shit-talking with a primal entity (Death\, Cupid\, Santa\, Time)\, for example\, or an all-powerful god with an ordinary mortal name and ordinary mortal foibles (“Bob\, creator of the Universe\, woke up one Sunday with a headache”). Maybe you ARE the next Neil Gaiman — but probably not? \n• “And then she/he/they woke up” (which includes not just it-was-all-a-dream but also we’re-all-living-in-a-giant-simulation) \n• Suicide and self-harm (we realize this stuff is real and we write to deal with it\, just saying that successfully deploying it as a trope in the fantastical fiction we run is very\, very difficult to pull off) \nThat said … surprise us. If you feel you’ve written a truly original\, compelling take on any of these genre cliches\, we’re glad to check it out. \nPlease No\n• We are not open to AI/LLM-generated text. \n• No misogyny\, sexism\, racism\, bigotry\, hate\, etc. (view our nondiscrimination statement). \n• Previously unpublished works only — no reprints \nTo Submit\n• Check back on this page from Nov. 6-12\, or on our main Submittable portal\, for a live submissions button that will take you to our Submittable intake form. \n• Shunn format or at least double-spaced is great. \n• Please anonymize your submission! There must be no identifying details on your manuscript. Fear not — your contact info will be collected as part of the intake process\, and your cover letter will not be visible to our slush readers.

SUMMARY:PN - Autofocus Journal Call for Submissions. Theme: "Correspondences"
DESCRIPTION:For our Jan 2024 issue\, the theme is CORRESPONDENCES. \nWe want work in the form of letters (or emails\, texts\, other exchanges). Self-correspondences are great too (notes\, journals\, diaries\, etc.). \nWe’d consider some interviews–with writers or non-writers. \nWe like the idea of book-review-as-correspondence\, if that book review is done with a certain degree of self-reflexivity. We also like essays about essays. \nWork that blends or braids or threads any of these forms into a larger essay or poem (or whatever) are totally welcome. Encouraged\, even. \nBasically\, if you wrote something that seems in some way like a correspondence\, we’d like to see it. \nPlease send one piece up to 4\,000-ish words. \nCollaborations welcome (also encouraged). \nSimultaneous submissions expected. Unpublished work only please.

Confidence. Emotion. Our words fearlessly and unapologetically fascinate. Our process is challenging. Competitive. At least two editors give a story the “thumbs up” for publication.A story must speak to us\, exemplify our aesthetic\, and potentially delight readers. A tall order. \nWe explore intrepid culture: our stories feature danger elements\, struggle\, emotion\, and OVERCOMING. Our stories are intrepid first and not subordinated to other themes. We love odd\, quirky\, experimental stories\, and humor. \nA tip: if we’ve declined your submissions multiple times\, please don’t give up! Keep trying. But also\, read our published stories to clarify what we mean by intrepid culture. \nGo for the Gutsy! \nSubmission Guidelines for Flash Fiction and Short Stories:\n\nFlash Fiction 300 – 1\,000 words; Short Stories 1\,500 – 2\,500 words (firm). \nUnpublished Work Only: Story cannot be published anywhere online or publicly\, including social media\, community writing sites\, or personal blogs\, nor may work be retitled from said sites. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Stinging Fly
DESCRIPTION:Guidelines:\n\n\nWork must be previously unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere. \n\n\nOnly work submitted through our Submittable account will be considered. Submittable is free to use\, and there is no fee to submit your work to us. \n\n\nWe currently accept submissions in the following four categories: short fiction; novel extracts; non-fiction; poetry. Writers may only submit work to us under one category per submission period. Graphic fiction and non-fiction submissions are welcome. \n\n\nYour work should always be just as long (or as short) as it needs to be. If you are sending us a novel extract\, please don’t send us your full novel! Just a chapter or a section or a story-length passage will suffice\, so long as it can be enjoyed as a standalone piece. \n\n\nFor general poetry submissions\, you may send up to 3 poems. Your poems should be submitted together in one single file. \n\n\nFeatured Poets: In each issue we publish a number of poems (usually 5 or 6) by a poet who is working seriously towards a first collection. To be considered\, you should already have had work published in several other journals and magazines. We welcome poets who have previously had poems appear in The Stinging Fly. Please send 6-8 previously unpublished poems together in a single file. If we want to see more\, we will get back to you. If submitting for the Featured Poet slot\, there’s no need to make a separate general poetry submission. We will also consider individual poems within your Featured Poet submission for publication.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Rough Cut Press. Theme: "Withhold"
DESCRIPTION:Submit Your Work\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe seek experimental work of all genres by writers from the LGBTQIA community. We do not define or gatekeep what it means to be a queer writer: if you think your work belongs here\, then it belongs here. To get a sense of what we publish please read some of our former issues. We don’t know what we like until we see it. Each month we announce a different theme\, but don’t worry if the work you submit doesn’t quite fit: we often build issues and themes around work that takes us by surprise. \nWe seek personal\, political\, precise\, raw\, lyrical\, critical\, and experimental work; the stuff only you can write. Our readers are interested in interrogating systematic inequality\, sex\, sexuality\, gender\, phobias\, what it means to be an activist\, and what it means to create magic. We’re here to build a platform for a multiplicity of voices to converge\, and to compensate all contributing artists from day one. \nSimultaneous submissions are encouraged; we ask that you notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere. Written submissions are limited to 650 words. Please leave your name off of the submission itself and send one piece per submission\, in PDF format. We do not charge a submission fee or a subscription fee; we offer all published artists a $25 honorarium as compensation.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Free the Verse Poetry Magazine. Theme: "Hot Water"
DESCRIPTION:We are now accepting submissions for our winter issue. While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Hot Water’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. We love free verse poems that take familiar situations and turn them on their head\, using unusual metaphors and drawing parallels no one else would see. Poems with a sense of place and story are always welcome\, as are experimental pieces. You can read our latest issue\, Do You Smell Burning\, to get a sense of the poetry we publish. \nThe deadline for this issue is November 29th\, 2023. Please read our general submission guidelines below before sending us your work: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease submit up to 3 poems per issue\, in one submission. \n\n\n‘Hot Water’ is the title of the issue\, and therefore should not be the title of your poem. \n\n\nYour work must be original and unpublished\, either in print on online. We will accept work that has appeared on your personal website or equivalent. \n\n\nPlease include a brief third-person bio with your submission\, up to a maximum of 50 words. You are welcome to include details of previous publications\, but this will have no impact on whether your poems will be selected for our magazine. \n\n\nAt this time\, we only accept poems written in English. You are welcome to include words and phrases from other languages. \n\n\nIt is free to submit your work. At present we do not offer compensation to our authors. If your work is accepted for publication\, it will be published in our digital magazine. \n\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions. If one of your poems is accepted for publication elsewhere\, please let us know immediately via our contact page. \n\n\nYou must be over 18 years old to submit.

SUMMARY:PFN - Black Fox Prize: Rhapsody of Regret
DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for its ninth writing prize. The theme for this round is “Rhapsody of Regret.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWhat lies underneath the weight of regret? \nSo often\, regrets are reminders of roads not taken\, words left unsaid\, and chances not taken. They echo in the deepest parts of our minds\, insisting on what might have been. Whether fiction\, creative nonfiction\, or poetry\, we’re looking for work that uncovers the multifaceted nature of regrets. What emotions\, lessons\, and transformations emerge in retrospect? \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $300 and publication in the Winter 2024 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Winter 2024 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on November 30\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager\, found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of January 2024\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!
