DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\n\n\n\n \n\nGeist is a magazine of ideas and culture with a strong literary focus and a sense of humour. The Geist tone is intelligent\, plain-talking\, inclusive and offbeat. Each issue represents a convergence of fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry\, photography\, comics\, reviews\, little-known facts of interest\, cartography and the legendary Geist crossword puzzle.   \nWe encourage submissions from writers of colour\, writers with disabilities\, LGBTQIA2S+ writers\, and writers from other intersectional and marginalized groups. \nWhat to Submit \nBefore submitting work\, read several issues of Geist\, or dig into the archives at geist.com\, to get a sense of the kind of the work we publish. \nGeist is always seeking short non-fiction (around 800-1500 words\, flexible)\, typically personal narrative\, for the Notes & Dispatches section. DESCRIPTION:No matter how you look at it\, some days are just bad days. Often times you are able to look back on those days and laugh about what happened. The Bad Day Book is here to help you take a step back and realize one day you may laugh about what is happening. Or\, it might even help you realize that compared to others\, maybe it isn’t really as bad of a day as you thought. \nWhat are the rules for story and poem submissions? \n\nStories should be about bad things\, but that are still funny. We are not looking to include tragic or heart breaking stories. This book is to get others to laugh\, gasp\, and cringe.\nStories MUST be personal and true events that have already happened. No AI bot stories. No creative writing. No fiction.\nWe prefer stories under 1200 words. We will consider works up to 1500 words\, but it is rare to have works picked that are over the preferred 1200.\nStories should be written with first person narration and told in past tense.\nDo not include any vulgarity\, controversial topics\, politics\, sex/drugs\, drinking\, illegal activities\, curse/crass/crude words. This is a family friendly publication.\nThough many bad days are caused by a “villain”\, whether it be a person/company\, do not name drop or tear down others. Focus the story on what happens directly to you and not the people on the other end. We will not publish works that are written to tear others down\, even if they have done shady stuff. You may refer to others as friends\, coworkers\, family member\, pen names or a vague descriptor.\nStories should include a beginning\, middle\, and an end. Begin straight in the action; no introductions to the story are necessary. Make sure you conclude your story\, but please do not end the story with any recap. It’s always best to end with a laugh.\nOnly submit a story once to each theme you would like it considered for. DESCRIPTION:THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Seven Deadly Sins\, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins\, are a classification of vices in Christian teachings. They are considered particularly severe and are believed to lead to other immoral behaviors. The sins include: \n\n\nLust: Excessive or inappropriate sexual desires. \n\n\nGluttony: Overindulgence and overconsumption of food\, drink\, or anything to the point of waste. \n\n\nGreed: Avarice\, excessive desire for material wealth or gain. \n\n\nSloth: Laziness\, avoidance of physical or spiritual work. \n\n\nWrath: Uncontrolled feelings of anger\, hatred\, and vengeance. \n\n\nEnvy: Jealousy and coveting what others have or wishing for their downfall. \n\n\nPride: Excessive belief in one’s abilities\, a sense of superiority that often leads to disregard for others. \n\n\nThese sins are often viewed as the roots of other immoral actions and behaviors. In Christian teachings\, they are seen as obstacles to spiritual growth and are contrasted with the virtues one should cultivate instead. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUBMISSION PROMPTS \n1. Character Profiles: Create a unique character personifying one of the seven deadly sins. DESCRIPTION:Augur makes room for writing from uncommon perspectives\, and brings together the often disparate realms of literary and genre fiction. Our goal is to publish at least 80% Canadian and Indigenous content\, offering new opportunities to the rich communities of speculative fiction writers in the North. And\, more importantly\, we’re committed to featuring intersectional narratives as represented by characters\, storytelling\, and\, in particular\, author representation. We want the kind of liminal that pulls voices together\, and honours difference as an integral part of our literary canon. \nA NOTE ON INTERSECTIONALITY \n\n\nIf you are comfortable with it\, we encourage writers to indicate their intersections in their cover letter. We pay attention to whose voices we publish\, and this information helps us be self-aware as we construct issues. \nHowever\, we acknowledge marginalized individuals are not often safe when they disclose their identities. Disclosure is not a requirement to submit. \nAny information disclosed will be treated as confidential. \nWhat does “intersections” mean? Any intersection of identity that you sit at. For example\, a POC trans settler\, or an allocishet white woman.
