It describes music and art and culture\, as well as colors and flavors and comic-book sound effects. \nBut “POP!” can also pack a punch. DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: Happy Poems \nWhy is it so hard to write a happy poem? Correction: Why is it so hard to write a good happy poem? The lit world is rife with sadness\, anger\, depression\, horror\, fear\, rage\, outrage—the full range of negative emotions. This is of course a natural reaction to the news of the world and in fact just to the dailiness of living. And sure\, there are plenty of writers who bury their head in the sand and write nothing but shallow light verse. That’s not what we are looking for. (But feel free to submit anyway. Who knows?) \nWe instead propose an issue that finds something happy to latch on to\, some ray of hope beaming out from a crack in the steaming pile of dogshit that is the world. For this issue\, we want to see your version of a happy poem. The full range of happy. How do we acknowledge those things that bring us joy\, contentment\, or dare I say\, happiness\, even as the world burns down around us? \nInterpret this as you may. \nWould it make you happy to\, say\, see a certain politician shot from a cannon to the moon? Can you read the newspaper without crying and for a moment contemplate how lucky you are with your hot cup of coffee and someone you care about? Can we all breathe deeply and be in the moment and look for those things that make life worth living? \nHappiness is a complex emotion. Send us your happy poems\, whatever that means to you. DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers — How to be at Home in Canada: Placemaking in Indigenous\, Diaspora\, and Settler Texts\n  \n\nIn the landmark 1997 Delgamuukw land claim brought before the Supreme Court of Canada (Delgamuukw v. British Columbia)\, the Court ruled that traditional Indigenous story was admissible in court as evidence of land ownership\, legitimizing a kind of literary land claim. This special issue of Canadian Literature examines the way literary texts claim space and explore questions of belonging for Indigenous\, diaspora\, and settler populations. \nThe issue will consider narratives from communities in Canada that assert or contest relations between land\, story\, ownership and belonging—whether it be in rural or urban environments\, and in forms as varied as traditional Indigenous stories or hip hop’s practice of paying tribute to home through “reppin’.” Processes of claiming or challenging narratives of belonging are clearly different for Indigenous\, diaspora and settler populations\, since one consists of original inhabitants; another of immigrants with ties to elsewhere; and a third of settler populations who examine an uneasy colonial relationship to the land\, which ultimately contributes to either a sense of national belonging or alienation. Okanagan scholar\, author\, and activist Jeannette Armstrong writes\, “I am claimed and owned by this land\, this Okanagan” (174)\, and her poetry and prose embody that relationship. In Literary Land Claims (2015)\, settler scholar Margery Fee traces how texts use strategies to claim – or problematize the act of claiming – land\, story\, and belonging. How do other populations describe their belonging in territories claimed by Canada? \nBlack scholar Rinaldo Walcott\, in his essay “Towards a Poetics of Black Space(s) in Canada\,” signals the importance of such an undertaking: “It seems that one of the challenges facing contemporary Black Canadian art is to move beyond the discourse of nostalgia for an elsewhere and toward addressing the politics of its present location” (46-7). By centring the politics of the present\, this issue seeks to demonstrate the ways writers address the politics of place through literary land claims. Connecting community to place in the multiple national imaginaries both engenders and demonstrates belonging\, helping us redress systemic racism and assert the right to safe spaces. We will consider the politics of claiming stolen land\, and the ways that class\, race\, cultural practice\, gender\, sexuality\, and disability intersect into questions of territorial belonging\, nationhood\, and connection to place. \nAll papers examining space and place in relation to belonging in Canada are welcome\, in particular those examining questions of race\, cultural practice\, gender\, sexuality and disability. When is being seen and watched consensual or unsafe? \nOf course\, at first glance\, readers might think Magma’s Performance issue applies mainly to poets who have a specific style of poem or personality: slam poetry\, being in the ‘spotlight’. DESCRIPTION:No matter how you look at it\, some days are just bad days. Often times you are able to look back on those days and laugh about what happened. The Bad Day Book is here to help you take a step back and realize one day you may laugh about what is happening. Or\, it might even help you realize that compared to others\, maybe it isn’t really as bad of a day as you thought. \nWhat are the rules for story and poem submissions? \n\nStories should be about bad things\, but that are still funny. We are not looking to include tragic or heart breaking stories. This book is to get others to laugh\, gasp\, and cringe.\nStories MUST be personal and true events that have already happened. No AI bot stories. No creative writing. No fiction.\nWe prefer stories under 1200 words. We will consider works up to 1500 words\, but it is rare to have works picked that are over the preferred 1200.\nStories should be written with first person narration and told in past tense.\nDo not include any vulgarity\, controversial topics\, politics\, sex/drugs\, drinking\, illegal activities\, curse/crass/crude words. This is a family friendly publication.\nThough many bad days are caused by a “villain”\, whether it be a person/company\, do not name drop or tear down others. Focus the story on what happens directly to you and not the people on the other end. We will not publish works that are written to tear others down\, even if they have done shady stuff. You may refer to others as friends\, coworkers\, family member\, pen names or a vague descriptor.\nStories should include a beginning\, middle\, and an end. Begin straight in the action; no introductions to the story are necessary. Make sure you conclude your story\, but please do not end the story with any recap. They are considered particularly severe and are believed to lead to other immoral behaviors. The sins include: \n\n\nLust: Excessive or inappropriate sexual desires. \n\n\nGluttony: Overindulgence and overconsumption of food\, drink\, or anything to the point of waste. \n\n\nGreed: Avarice\, excessive desire for material wealth or gain. \n\n\nSloth: Laziness\, avoidance of physical or spiritual work. \n\n\nWrath: Uncontrolled feelings of anger\, hatred\, and vengeance. \n\n\nEnvy: Jealousy and coveting what others have or wishing for their downfall. \n\n\nPride: Excessive belief in one’s abilities\, a sense of superiority that often leads to disregard for others. \n\n\nThese sins are often viewed as the roots of other immoral actions and behaviors. In Christian teachings\, they are seen as obstacles to spiritual growth and are contrasted with the virtues one should cultivate instead. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUBMISSION PROMPTS \n1.
