SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Ephemera
DESCRIPTION:GENERAL GUIDELINES \n\nWe are looking for serious writers with an appreciation for language and the craft of writing. We want fiction with memorable characters and realistic plots\, poetry that is fresh and original\, and nonfiction that is both thoughtful and entertaining.\nWe will accept only writing that has been proofread for spelling and grammar. Trust us on this one. We keep our virtual machete very sharp for people who are grammatically challenged\, and we are not afraid to use it.\nHaving said that\, as an international ‘zine\, we accept differences in spelling usages (e.g. British vs American English) and will publish whatever is considered correct in an author’s home country.\nWe are not interested in explicit sexual content\, gratuitous violence\, or repetitive swearing\, unless it is essential to the plot and not included solely for shock value.\nPlease do not send us any of the following: poetry that sounds like it ought to be on a Hallmark card\, poetry you copied from a Hallmark card\, how-to articles\, first drafts of anything\, fanfiction\, anything full of sentimentality\, or religious and/or political propaganda disguised as fiction.\nThis ought to be obvious\, but only send us your own work\, humans. If you send us anything plagiarized or written by a robot\, remember we have a machete.\nWe do not accept previously published work. This includes not only formal publications in print and online journals\, but any pieces you may have posted to a blog\, personal website\, etc. If it’s already available to the public in some form\, we do not accept it.\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted by another journal.\nAs above\, we do not consider or accept submissions outside the specified submission period.\nWe reserve the right to make minor editorial changes without consultation\, where there are unintentional errors or inconsistencies in punctuation\, spelling or grammar.\nThe editors are all responsive to shameless flattery and to gifts of chocolate.\n\nPoetry Guidelines \nWe accept poetry of roughly 500 words or less\, although we are not terribly strict about this guideline.  We are rarely willing to be lenient with the theme when it comes to poetry\, and will do so only if the submission is very good. \nPlease note that we only accept three poems at any one time from a single author and\, for the most part\, publish only one poem from any one author per edition. \nFiction Guidelines \nWe accept fiction of roughly 5\,000 words or less related to the theme of the issue.   The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar/spelling\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \nPlease submit only one piece of fiction at a time\, and ensure stories are formatted as requested below. \nNonfiction Guidelines \nWe accept creative nonfiction of 3\,000 words or less. Halfway Down the Stairs is specifically looking for essays and memoir with a strong voice and a unique point of view. We publish well-written\, honest writing that inspires emotion. Humor is also appreciated. \nWe are not looking for stream of consciousness rants of a political or religious nature. Save those for your blog. We respond negatively to spelling and grammatical errors\, so please proofread your work closely if you wish to have it seriously considered. \nAs of 2018 we began accepting nonfiction submissions outside of the issue theme.  Submissions within the theme are still encouraged\, but high quality submissions outside the theme will also be considered for publication. Please note this only applies to nonfiction submissions. \nPlease submit only one piece of nonfiction at a time.

SUMMARY:PF - Augur Magazine: Limited demographic: BIPOC\, trans\, and/or disabled and Canadian citizens/permanent residents
DESCRIPTION:Augur makes room for writing from uncommon perspectives\, and brings together the often disparate realms of literary and genre fiction. Our goal is to publish at least 80% Canadian and Indigenous content\, offering new opportunities to the rich communities of speculative fiction writers in the North. And\, more importantly\, we’re committed to featuring intersectional narratives as represented by characters\, storytelling\, and\, in particular\, author representation. We want the kind of liminal that pulls voices together\, and honours difference as an integral part of our literary canon. \nA NOTE ON INTERSECTIONALITY \n\n\nIf you are comfortable with it\, we encourage writers to indicate their intersections in their cover letter. We pay attention to whose voices we publish\, and this information helps us be self-aware as we construct issues. \nHowever\, we acknowledge marginalized individuals are not often safe when they disclose their identities. Disclosure is not a requirement to submit. \nAny information disclosed will be treated as confidential. \nWhat does “intersections” mean? Any intersection of identity that you sit at. For example\, a POC trans settler\, or an allocishet white woman. Everyone sits at intersections of identity and privilege—please do not write that you have “no intersectional identity” in your cover letter. \nSome intersections might include: \n\n2SLGBTQIA+\nBlack\, Indigenous\, and/or POC\nMarginalized genders\nSettler\nDisabled\nNeurodivergent\nCitizenship status\nReligious minority\nClass\n\nAlthough this is by no means an exhaustive list. We also encourage folks who aren’t marginalized to get into the practice of self-identifying\, to normalize the practice across the board. \nPlease note that our editorial preference will always skew towards intersectional/marginalized/under-represented/diverse\, Canadian and Indigenous/Native/First Nations creators. \n\n\nA NOTE ON CITIZENSHIP DECLARATION FOR INDIGENOUS CREATORS\n\n\n\n\nCanadian granting bodies require us to keep track of who we’re publishing—we need to know that we’re hitting the required Canadian quotas. So\, as a result\, we ask folks to identify as from Canada/Turtle Island or as International. However\, we recognize that this complicates the submissions process for folks who live within Canadian settler borders but who resist/refuse Canadian identity. \nWe welcome all of our Indigenous authors and creators to self-identify their citizenship however feels most comfortable and accurate. If you prefer\, you are welcome to exempt yourself from the CND/TI and INT requirements—we just ask that you also let us know if you are situated within Canadian borders\, so we can keep track of what the Canadian government will recognize as a part of our quota. \nFICTION SUBMISSIONS\nShorts & Flash \n– Submit in standard manuscript format \n– Do not include identifying information \n– Send as a .doc or .docx file \n– Place content warnings under the title of your manuscript \n– If you would like to\, indicate your intersections (not required) \n– Let us know if it’s a simultaneous submission \n– Don’t submit any single story over 5000 words \n– Send a maximum of 2 stories per submissions cycle \nWe pay $0.11 cents (CAD) per word for short fiction (1000+ words)\, and a flat fee of $110.00 per flash fiction piece (1000 words and under). \nFinally\, for grant purposes\, please indicate if you have citizenship/residency in Canada/Turtle Island [CND/TI]\, are international [INT]\, or have a less clearcut relationship with Canada [OTH]—for example\, international students\, individuals living here without citizenship\, or any other relationship that is not easily defined. \nPOETRY SUBMISSIONS\nFor bards & wordsmiths\n– Submit in standard manuscript format for poetry \n– Submit as a .doc or a .docx file \n– Do not include identifying information \n– Place content warnings under the title of your manuscript \n– If you would like to\, indicate your intersections (not required) \n– Do not submit more than 5 poems\, to a maximum of 10 pages of poetry \nWe pay $60.00 CAD per poem \nFinally\, for grant purposes\, please indicate if you have citizenship/residency in Canada/Turtle Island [CND/TI]\, are international [INT]\, or have a less clearcut relationship with Canada [OTH]—for example\, international students\, individuals living here without citizenship\, or any other relationship that is not easily defined

DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: 50 Over 50\n\nPrairie Fire is giving centre stage to women writers over fifty! This special issue is a celebration that honours and recognizes the enormous contribution of living Canadian women writers\, who have helped shape CanLit and continue to do so. \nIf you are a woman\, aged fifty and over\, have at least one published piece of writing (literary journals\, anthologies\, books\, etc.) and live in Canada (or lived a substantial amount of your life in Canada) then we want to see your unpublished work\, as we compile this mosaic of new writing to be released in fall of 2024. \nThis special issue\, tentatively called “50 Over 50” will be guest edited by Katherine Bitney\, poet and one of the founders of Prairie Fire Press. \nSubmission Deadline: February 15\, 2024.\n  \nGUEST EDITOR: KATHERINE BITNEY\n\nBorn in England\, Katherine Bitney grew up in Saskatchewan and has spent most of her life on the Canadian prairies. SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to National Flash Fiction Day Anthology. Theme: Air\, Earth\, Water and Fire
DESCRIPTION:The theme of the 2024 National Flash Fiction Day anthology is THE CLASSICAL ELEMENTS: AIR\, EARTH\, WATER AND FIRE. \nYou can use any combination of the elements\, just one or all four\, which should give you plenty of space to play around with ideas. Will you take us flying in the air\, bring us down to earth\, set us alight with your words or plunge us into the watery depths? We can’t wait to find out. \nFeel free to interpret the theme however you wish\, in 500 words or fewer. Selected flashes will be published in National Flash Fiction Day’s 13th Annual Anthology. Payment is one contributor’s copy of the anthology. \nPlease submit up to three unpublished flashes of 500 words or fewer before our deadline. Titles are not included in the word count. There is no minimum word count and much shorter pieces are very welcome. We prefer you include all pieces in one document where possible\, though multiple submissions are fine if you are submitting on different occasions. \nThis year’s theme is THE CLASSICAL ELEMENTS – AIR\, EARTH\, WATER AND FIRE. The story does not need to include thematic words or phrases\, but it must touch on the theme in some way. \nSubmissions are open internationally. Although we anonymise submissions\, we actively encourage submissions by writers from underrepresented groups\, such as BAME\, LGBTQ+\, low income and disabled writers. \nEntries will be read and judged anonymously. To avoid disqualification\, please do not put your name\, address\, email\, telephone number or any personally identifying information on your document or in the file name. \nIn addition\, all selected pieces will be considered for one of two Editor’s Choice Awards.  The 2024 editors will each select one piece from the accepted stories to receive a £50 prize.

SUMMARY:PFN - After Happy Hour Contest Theme: Animals
DESCRIPTION:For this year’s contest\, we want submitters to go wild–or domesticated\, or sentient\, or whatever other form of beastly you’re feeling. In other words: we’re seeking work from any and all genres that involves non-human living creatures in some way\, shape\, or form. \nSubmissions that fit the theme will include some kind of animal. Note that this doesn’t need to be a real animal. It can be a cryptid like a chupacabra\, a hybrid made via genetic engineering\, a robot pet\, or some new species that you’ve made up. It also counts if it’s a human who becomes an animal–a Kafka-style transformation\, for example\, or a were-beast\, Selkie\, etc. The animal can be an image or metaphor\, too\, but we’re looking for more than a passing mention of birds singing from the trees. The animal should be integral to the story in some way\, be that as a character\, a plot point\, or a central theme. \nEach $10 entry can be: \n\n1 prose work of 1\,000 words or longer\nup to 3 individual poems sent in a single document\nup to 3 flash or micro prose pieces in a single document\n\n  \nNumbers update 1/1: At the halfway point of the contest\, we’ve received 67 entries and the prize pool is currently at $320. \nPoetry: Send up to 3 individual poems\, no line or word limits. \nFiction: Send a single short story or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We have no hard word count limits\, and welcome stories in that hard-to-publish 5\,000-10\,000 word length that justify their real estate. That said\, this is a print issue\, so we won’t be able to publish anything that’s a true novella length. \nCreative non-fiction: Send a single piece of 1\,000 words or longer\, or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We are specifically looking for lyric or narrative non-fiction\, not scholarly essays (though if you’re using the tropes of scholarly essays within the context of a creative essay\, that we do want to see). \nHybrid/Cross-Genre: Yes\, please. Follow whichever of the above guidelines makes the most sense for your work.\n \nPrize Info:\nThe winners and honorable mentions for this contest will receive a percentage of the total entry fees paid (including purchases of After Happy Hour print issues): \n\nUp to 3 “ranked winners” will split 30%.\nUp to 3 honorable mentions will split 15%\n\nHow this will look in practice will depend on the work we receive. Possible scenarios: \n\nThree 1st place winners\, one each in fiction\, poetry\, and CNF\, who each get 10%; three honorable mentions\, one in each category\, that get 5%\nTwo 1st place winners\, one each in poetry and prose\, who each get 15%; two honorable mentions\, one in each category\, that get 7.5%\nOverall 1st (20%) and 2nd (10%) place\, plus 1-3 overall honorable mentions\nA single Grand Prize winner who walks away with the whole 30%\, plus 1-3 overall honorable mentions\n\nThe more submissions we get\, the more winners and honorable mentions we’re likely to award. All submitted works will also be considered for publication in the issue. If we publish your work and you don’t win a prize\, you’ll get $10 (basically you’ll get your entry fee back) and 2 copies of the print issue. \nGeneral Guidelines: \n\nPlease include a brief (100 words max) 3rd-person bio with your submission.\nTo limit editor bias\, we read all submissions anonymously. To this end\, we ask submitters to remove their name and contact information from the document before submitting it.\nUse standard manuscript format (11- or 12-point font\, standard margins/spacing). We won’t reject you for weird spacing or a bad font (probably)\, but following this standard makes things easier to read\, and that makes the editors happy. Poets/experimental prose writers have more liberty here if the non-standard formatting is used for stylistic reasons. Straightforward prose writers have no excuse.\nWe accept submissions only through Submittable. Submissions sent to our e-mail will be deleted unread.\nMultiple submissions are allowed\, but each submission must be accompanied by its own $10 submission fee.\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted for the contest. However\, your entry fee will not be returned if the piece is accepted elsewhere and you need to withdraw it.\nPreviously published work is not accepted for the contest. We are looking for new\, unpublished stories for this issue.\nIf you need to withdraw a longer prose piece\, or an entire packet of poems or flash prose\, you can choose the “withdraw” option on Submittable. To withdraw a single poem or flash piece from a packet\, you can message us through Submittable or e-mail us (afterhappyhour [at] gmail [dot] com).\nAccepted submissions may be edited for grammar. All changes will be sent to the author for approval before publication.\nWe acquire first publishing rights and electronic archive rights. All other rights are retained by the author. Following the work’s publication in After Happy Hour\, you can re-publish and anthologize your work as you see fit. Content can be removed from the website on request\, but cannot be removed from the issue in which it was published.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Argyle Literary Magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Blood
DESCRIPTION:Theme One: Blood\nWe are fascinated by it. We fear it. We need it to live. Without it\, we die. We spill it for love and country. It binds us together. It tears us apart. \nIn Issue #2 (March 2024)\, The Argyle will introduce the inclusion of its “Theme” page\, which will showcase selected pieces of poetry\, fiction\, nonfiction\, and digital art that are based on a particular theme in each issue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorks for the March 2024 issue will be based on the theme of Blood. Contributors may interpret the theme literally or figuratively; however\, the concept of blood must be reflected (directly or indirectly) in their submissions. Note: While speculative pieces may be considered\, we are not looking for works of horror\, gore\, or gratuitous violence. \n\n\n\n\nSubmission Guidelines\nWe are looking for original\, unpublished work; however\, we are also all about reprinting strong pieces that aren’t done making their “rounds” (just let us know where reprints were originally published and acknowledge you currently retain the rights to them). Please do let us know if your submission (or part of your submission) has been accepted elsewhere ASAP via our submission email (submissions@theargylelitmag.com) so we can remove it from consideration and give you a heartfelt “Congratulations!” \nThe Argyle accepts general submissions for poetry\, short fiction\, essays\, interviews\, reviews\, and more. \n\n\nShort fiction\, CNF\, & Essays – up to 3 pieces (approximately 3\,000 words each). We can be a little flexible for longer pieces). \n\n\nPoetry – up to 6 poems (no limitations\, but rhyme at your own risk). \n\n\nNo submissions created with AI (either partially or totally) may be submitted for consideration! \nSubmit your work at submissions@theargylelitmag.com\, including “Submission type – Name + number of pieces” in the subject line (ex: Poetry submission – John Doe (5 pieces). SUMMARY:P - Yaffle's Nest Competition. Theme: "What we Inherit from Water"
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nWater is essential for life. We drink it\, wash with it\, swim in it. Some of our earliest memories involve the taste or smell or sound of it. Water has the power to change landscapes\, it can soothe and frighten us\, but one thing is for sure\, we can’t live without it. \nThis competition will look for poems that speak to us about what we inherit from water and what that means depends on your own relationship with it. We want to see poems which show what you get from water in all its many forms. Poems that show what water provides and what it takes away. How being near it and in it makes you feel and what it’s like to be without it. Use water to write about something else. Tell us how it is\, tell us how it isn’t! \nThe competition judge is Mark Connors. First prize is £200\, second prize £50.00 and the third prize £25.00. The prizewinning and longlisted poems will all be included in an anthology entitled ‘What we Inherit from Water’\, to be published under the Yaffle’s Nest banner next year and launched on a date and at a venue tbc. \nTo enter the competition\, please pay the appropriate fee on PayPal. \nPlease include the reference: Yaffle Prize. \nEmail your submissions to \nyafflesnest@gmail.com \nPlease also include your name\, contact details \nand address in the body of the email. \nNo names should appear on the submitted document. \nPlease submit all poems on one document via a word/docx attachment. \n \n\n\nRULES\nOnly poems of 40 lines or less will be considered. \nThe poems may be in any style. \nWork deemed to be offensive will not be considered. \nAll entries must be the work of the poet submitting. \nPreviously published poems are not permitted. \nWe will not be accepting translations of poetry. \nNo changes can be made to poems once they have been submitted. \nAny entries in violation to the above will be disqualified. \nNo refunds will be given once work has been submitted. \nThe decision from our judges is final. \nNo correspondence regarding entries will be entered into. \n**As the poems are blind judged\, to keep anonymity\, \npoems which have been workshopped by the judge will be disqualified \nEntries can be made online via Pay Pal

SUMMARY:PFN - 3Elements Literary Review Seeking Submissions Including the Three Elements: Orchestra\, Bedridden\, Sift
DESCRIPTION:SUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nWe appreciate good writing in any genre. We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nWe find stories that include gratuitous violence distasteful. Sexism\, racism\, or other forms of intolerance are intolerable to us. That said\, you can certainly reveal a character through his/her prejudices; just don’t use a story to perpetuate negative stereotypes or ignorance. The world is already bursting with both. \nUsing the elements\n3Elements Literary Review  is a themed literary journal\, and all THREE elements (the specific words\, Orchestra\, Bedridden\, Sift) given for the submission period must be included in your story or poem for your work to be considered for publication. NO EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER. \nYour story or poem doesn’t have to be about the three elements or even revolve around them; simply use your imagination to create whatever you want. You can use any form of the words/elements for the given submission period. For example\, if the elements are: Flash\, Whimsy\, and Seizure; we would accept the usage of Flashed\, Whimsical\, and Seizures. \nLength\nThere is no minimum word count\, but please keep your fiction and nonfiction submissions under 3\,500 words. Poetry must be under two typed pages. \nSubmission period category limits\nWe will only accept the following number of submissions per submission category: Fiction and nonfiction is capped at no more than two submissions per submission period. Poetry is limited to three submissions per submission period. \nMultiple submissions\nWe do not accept multiple submissions within the same document/file. Each submission (fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry\, art\, photography) must be submitted individually. \nSimultaneous submissions\nSimultaneous submissions are completely fine with us. Our only requirement is that you notify us as soon as you can if you intend to publish your piece with another publication. \n

SUMMARY:F- Call for Submissions to Bridge House Annual Anthology. Theme: Good News...?
DESCRIPTION:Our title is Good News….? The work “gospel” really means good news. But is what we regard as good news always good news? Even the loveliness of Christmas and the birth of the special baby is tinged with sadness; the beautiful Coventry carol isn’t about the little baby Jesus but about one of the children who was going to be slaughtered because Herod thought a new king had arrived. \nMany of the Jews who survived the Holocaust fled to Israel … only to be plunged into another conflict that has flared up time and time again. And look what’s happening now. \nGreat\, World War II ended in 1945. In 1947 the Indian sub-continent was torn apart. \nOn 20 April 1889 a woman was delighted to have given birth to a baby boy she named Adolf. Her husband would be pleased. Only he grew up to be abused by a step-father and in turn did his own abusing. Big time. \nYes\, the technology for electric vehicles is improving all the time. Except that many electronic parts come from the Ukraine and most of the lithium for the batteries comes from Afghanistan. And what of the carbon footprint that making them creates? \nIt seems we can’t do right for doing wrong. \nThere may be a sense of “be careful what you wish for”. \nOr: is the good news a trace of hope in a bleak time? Perhaps those elements of our lives for which we should be grateful? \nAnother thought: good news doesn’t sell newspapers. Therefore there are a lot of good news stories that don’t get told. Can you unearth one? \nPerhaps even what looks like bad news is actually good. \n\nHow to Submit\n\n\nPlease name your file as your story antholgy  e.g.  Finding the Butterfleis Good news ….?\n\nTry to avoid having the word “Good News” in your title but if you must make sure there are other words.   \n\n\nTexts should be:\n\nBetween 1\,000 and 5\,000 words \nPreviously unpublished \nDouble-spaced (Please do not put an extra double-space between paragraphs but do indent new paragraphs – use the Word paragraph settings to set this up) \nIn a regular font – e.g. Times New Roman or Arial\, 12 point \n\nYour name should not appear anywhere on your text. \nPlease use the header and footer function in Word to create headers and footers. Include the title of your story and the anthology in the header and page numbers in the footer.\n\n\nPlease adhere to these guidelines even if they sound pernickety – it really helps us if you submit this way. Although we wouldn’t necessarily reject your story if it was fantastic and you’d done something a little out of kilter\, if you’re borderline or your story is very similar to another this could be a deciding factor.

SUMMARY:PFN - THEMA Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Bookmarks
DESCRIPTION:Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. \nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. Subtlety is more creative. \n\n\n\n\nTHEMA isn’t for everyone. To find out why\, click here. \nNew to submitting manuscripts to journals?\nClick here to download a PDF file of a few basic guidelines. \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem.
