SUMMARY:P - Submissions for the 2022 Airlie Prize are now open!
DESCRIPTION:Submissions for the 2022 the Airlie Prize will be open January 1st through March 15th\, 2022 to all poets writing in English\, regardless of place of residence. The winner will be notified in the fall following the submission and will receive a $1000 cash award upon publication of the book in September of the next year. The initial print run is 500 copies. \nAt Airlie Press\, our vision and mission are to publish books of poetry that are compelling\, innovative\, and representative of diverse voices. To that end\, submissions to the Airlie Prize will no longer be read anonymously. As a press\, we commit to participating in the ongoing conversation and practice regarding inclusion and equity. We encourage submissions from underrepresented voices and poets from marginalized communities. \nIn the interest of transparency\, we’d like to share our selection process. All manuscripts will be read by two Airlie Press editors (either past or present) and previous Airlie Prize winners. Each reader will choose 2-3 manuscripts to advance to the second round. Our main criteria in reviewing manuscripts is the quality of the work. All current editors will then read the manuscripts that have advanced to the second round\, and each will choose their top two selections. From that group of finalists\, the prize winner is chosen by consensus among all current editors. If you have submitted to the Airlie Prize before\, we encourage you to try again\, as the judging team of Airlie Press editors varies from year to year. \nPoets previously published or contracted to be published by Airlie Press are ineligible to enter this contest\, as are members of the Airlie advisory board. In the case that an entry to the contest is made by a close connection (friend\, relative\, student\, or former student) of one of the Airlie Prize readers\, that reader will recuse themselves from the review of that manuscript in the first round. Manuscripts that advance to the final round will be read by all current editors\, regardless of connection\, and a winner will be chosen by consensus. For the purposes of this contest\, we also define “close connection” as anyone with whom a reader has direct correspondence (either written or verbal) once a month or more. As poetry is a relatively small community\, we believe a passing acquaintance with one of the readers does not necessitate a recusal. \nSubmissions are accepted via Submittable during the submission period. Entry fee: $25 ($33 if you would like to receive a copy of the winning book; $38 for those residing outside the US wishing to receive the book). \nManuscript Guidelines: \n1.      Manuscripts should be 48 to 90 pages of original poetry in English (excluding front matter and end matter). No more than one poem should appear on a page. \n2.      Please be sure manuscript pages are numbered. \n3.      Please include a table of contents. \n4.      Please use a standard\, easy-to-read font such as Times New Roman in twelve-point size. \n5.      Poems included in the submission may have appeared previously in magazines or anthologies but may not have been previously published in a book-length collection of the author’s own work. \n6.      Authors may submit more than one manuscript as long as no material is duplicated between submissions. Each submission requires a separate entry fee. \n7.      This contest is limited to single-author submissions. Translations are not eligible. \n8.      We accept simultaneous submissions\, but ask that you notify us and withdraw your manuscript from Submittable if it is accepted by another publisher. Entry fees are nonrefundable. \n9.    The contest winner will participate in the judging for the Airlie Prize in the year following their book’s publication.

We believe that intent to act ethically\, clarity of guidelines\, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end\, we agree 1) to conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers\, judges\, or editors; 2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines—defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and 3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This code recognizes that different contest models produce different results\, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage.

SUMMARY:PFN - Apofenie Magazine: Re(writing) Home
DESCRIPTION:For many writers\, the idea of “home” emerges through imagined intimacies—entangled in the experiences of longing and belonging and textured through the languages of memory and loss. In the Epilogue to her biomythography\, Zami\, Audre Lorde describes how\, as a daughter of immigrants\, “once home was a long way off\, a place I had never been to but know out of my mother’s mouth.” Similarly\, James Baldwin remarked that “Perhaps home is not a place\, but an irrevocable condition.” Home is\, in many ways\, not a location but a contouring of one’s history\, both material and imagined. Moreover\, for those who live in the margins\, this concept often fails to capture the social cost of their liminality. In this issue of Apofenie\, we seek poetry\, prose\, and nonfiction that addresses this question of home—its problems\, possibilities\, architectures\, and mythologies. To what extent does the idea of home offer an apparatus for belonging? What are some of ways that it can be reclaimed and reimagined? We are especially interested in work that thematizes the problem of home amidst dislocation\, war\, post-coloniality\, disability\, and marginalized identities (including LGBTQ+). \nPlease send all submissions to apofeniemagazine@gmail.com. Submissions should specify genre and include a three-sentence biographical statement. SUMMARY:PFN - Open Minds Quarterly Seeks Submissions. Theme: "Cycles"
DESCRIPTION:Open Minds Quarterly is a literary journal that features explorations of life in a mad world. We welcome writing and art from people with lived experience of what is variously called mental health challenges\, mental illness\, madness\, and neurodivergence. We strive to promote these voices and perspectives by publishing work based on first-hand lived experience. \nThe theme for Summer 2022 will be: CYCLES. We encourage you to think of this theme broadly and incorporate into your work. Pieces that follow the theme will have a much higher chance of being selected for this issue than pieces that don’t follow the theme. Nonfiction\, reviews\, open letters\, and research should relate specifically to experiences of madness or mental health challenges. Poetry and fiction submissions do not need to focus on madness/mental health\, but we may prioritize pieces that we feel fit our mandate and this issue’s theme. \nYou may submit one (1) of the following: \n\nNONFICTION—First-hand accounts\, personal essays\, and memoir. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nFICTION—Creative explorations of life through a mad lens. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nRESEARCH—Studies on mental health that pass a formal ethics review. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nLETTERS—Opinion pieces and letters for our editor or readers. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\n\nOR four (4) pieces of the following: \n\nPOETRY—From poets well-versed in mental health challenges. 4 piece limit.\nEXPERIMENTAL—Thinking and writing outside of the other boxes. 4 piece limit.\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions. Please notify us as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. We do not publish work that has been selected for publication elsewhere. We do not accept previously published pieces. We do not publish excerpts from longer works. \nYou must be 18 or older to make a submission. \nPlease note\, it may take up to 60 days after the submission period has closed to review your submission.

SUMMARY:N - Call for Submissions: New Literary Anthology on the Fibre Arts
DESCRIPTION:Knitting\, sewing\, embroidery\, crochet\, lacework\, felting\, beading and weaving have long been dismissed as “hobbies” or feminine pursuits. Editors Marita Dachsel and Nancy Lee are looking for essays (approx. 2\,000 to 5\,000 words) that engage fibre arts practice as a lens (positive or negative) through which to examine larger contemporary issues: identity\, technology\, climate change\, personal struggle\, politics\, family\, adventure\, relationship\, art\, science\, or any other complexities of life. These essays will challenge the traditional view of crafting and explore the role\, purpose\, frustration\, joy\, humour and necessity of fibre arts amidst the alienating pressures of modern life. \nWe are particularly interested in lived experiences and perspectives historically underrepresented in the fibre arts space\, work that challenges the dominant culture view and pushes beyond easy nostalgia and sentimentality to examine the unusual and unexpected. We invite essays that are formally inventive\, including graphic forms. \nDeadline for submission is April 15th\, 2022. Please send submissions to: fibreartsanthology@gmail.com. Contributors selected for publication will receive an honorarium as well as two contributor copies. The anthology will be published in fall 2023 by Arsenal Pulp Press.

SUMMARY:Recreation.gov Announces 2022 "Share Your Story" Writing Contest for Outdoor Adventurists
DESCRIPTION:Recreation.gov has launched its second annual “Share Your Story” adventure writing contest\, inviting visitors of America’s federal public lands to submit stories detailing their experiences exploring and spending time in the great outdoors. Experiences must have taken place between January 1\, 2020 and April 30\, 2022. Visitors can submit stories from now until April 30\, 2022 for a chance to win great prizes and have their story featured on Recreation.gov. The 2021 inaugural contest generated nearly 1\,200 entries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrand Prize Winner\, 2021 Share Your Story Contest\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“When Recreation.gov first launched the ‘Share Your Story’ contest in 2021\, we set out to discover stories from people across the nation who got outside to experience nature in a new way\, and particularly how those experiences helped them find peace\, tranquility\, or adventure during the first year of the pandemic\,” said Rick DeLappe\, Program Manager at Recreation.gov. “We were blown away by the entries\, many of which covered memorable moments with loved ones and a newfound sense of gratitude and appreciation for public lands and waters. We look forward to receiving more stories in 2022 of how the great outdoors has brought people peace\, enjoyment\, and a sense of togetherness\, with nature\, family\, or new friends you meet along the trail.” \n\n\nParticipants can submit stories that fall within up to two of four categories\, including Traditions (Old and New)\, RV/Campervans\, Family Trips\, and Activities and Adventure. \n“As we enter the third year of this global pandemic\, the outdoors continues to provide comfort and solace\,” said Eugenie Bostrom\, Recreate Responsibly Coalition Manager. “Brought together by a love of the places that sustain us\, our outdoor community continues to expand as more see the benefits of nature. The Recreate Responsibly Coalition\, in collaboration with Recreation.gov\, invites you to share your perspective and experiences of responsible and holistic outdoor recreation.” \nAs we reflect on the benefits that nature provides during challenging times\, we can rely on storytelling to keep us connected and to provide comfort. In celebrating stories of outdoor adventures or peace-seeking in nature\, we can see ourselves in each other and in the places that tie us together. The genesis of #RecreateResponsibly is to care for one another and for the places that we play or find solace\, and we can share that through insightful and uplifting recollections of our experiences.” \nParticipants can enter up to two stories during the contest period for a chance to be one of the total 29 winners of various prizes\, including: \n–       Three Grand Prize Winners: The first Grand Prize Winner will receive $1\,500 from an outdoor retailer\, the Second Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1\,000 from an outdoor retailer\, and the third Grand Prize Winner will receive $500 from an outdoor retailer. Additionally\, each winner will receive an America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands (ATB) Pass\, providing access to more than 2\,000 federal recreation sites across the country. \n–    Four Overall Category First Place Winners: Each winner will receive $300 from an outdoor retailer and an ATB pass. \n–    Four Overall Category Runner Up Winners: Each winner will receive $150 from an outdoor retailer and an ATB pass. \n–    Four Monthly First Place Winners: Each winner will receive $150 from an outdoor retailer and an ATB pass. \n–    Four Monthly Runner Up Winners: Each winner will receive $100 from an outdoor retailer and an ATB pass. \n–    Ten Honorable Mention Winners: Each winner will receive branded gear from Recreation.gov. \nStories and any accompanying photos must have taken place between January 1\, 2020 and April 30\, 2022 and must be within the facilities of participating agencies: National Park Service; U.S. Bureau of Land Management; U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; U.S. Forest Service; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; National Archives; and NOAA Marine Sanctuaries. \nThe contest promotion period to submit stories will conclude on April 30\, 2022. SUMMARY:PF - The First Line: "Thomas hadn't expected to be alive when the town's time capsule was opened."
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2021 \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story\, poem\, or essay be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \nSubmissions: We prefer you send manuscripts via email to submission (@) thefirstline (dot) com. We accept stories in MS Word or Word Perfect format (we prefer attachments). Please do not send pdf versions of your story or links to Google docs. Make sure your name and contact information\, as well as your bio\, are part of the attachment. Stories also can be sent to The First Line‘s post office box. No manuscripts will be returned without an accompanying SASE with sufficient return postage. \nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $5.00 – $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time.

SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs\, Theme: "Open and Shut"
DESCRIPTION:Halfway Down the Stairs publishes poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and book reviews. We publish primarily literary and mainstream work\, but accept work in most genres\, with children’s literature and erotica as the exceptions. \nHalfway Down the Stairs accepts simultaneous submissions but are not interested in reprints. All work should be thoroughly proofread before it is submitted. They are not interested in cliche stories or anything with a trite punchline. \nHalfway Down the Stairs are open to submissions of three poems at a time\, or one piece of prose. Work in every genre should try to relate to the theme\, although they occasionally publish poetry that is unrelated to the theme if they feel that it is particularly good. They expect to receive all submissions via email and they have rather strict submission guidelines\, so make sure to review them before submitting. \n\nFiction OPEN\n\nWe accept fiction related to the theme of the issue. The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \n\n\n\nDates:\n\nOpen to fiction submissions through 01 May 2022*\n\nAudience:\nOpen to a broad Audience. Excluding: Children.\nGenres:\n\n\n\n\nGENRE\nSUBGENRES\n\n\n\n\nGeneral General\n\n\n\nOpen to all/most Genres Open to all/most Genres\nExcluding: Erotica.\n\n\n\n\nStyles:\nOpen to all/most Styles\, including: Humorous\, Literary\, Mainstream\, Realist.\nTopics:\nOpen to all/most Topics\, including: Other (May vary).\nTheme: Open and Shut\nTypes/Lengths:\n\n\n\n\nTYPE\nLENGTH DETAILS\n\n\n\n\nFlash Fiction Flash Fiction\nUp to 1\,000 words.\n\n\nShort Story Short Story\n1\,000 – 5\,000 words.\n\n\n\n\nPayscale:\nWe list broad pay categories rather than payment specifics.
