DESCRIPTION:SUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nWe appreciate good writing in any genre. We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nWe find stories that include gratuitous violence distasteful. Sexism\, racism\, or other forms of intolerance are intolerable to us. That said\, you can certainly reveal a character through his/her prejudices; just don’t use a story to perpetuate negative stereotypes or ignorance. The world is already bursting with both. \nUsing the elements\n3Elements Literary Review  is a themed literary journal\, and all THREE elements (the specific words\, Orchestra\, Bedridden\, Sift) given for the submission period must be included in your story or poem for your work to be considered for publication. NO EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER. \nYour story or poem doesn’t have to be about the three elements or even revolve around them; simply use your imagination to create whatever you want. You can use any form of the words/elements for the given submission period. For example\, if the elements are: Flash\, Whimsy\, and Seizure; we would accept the usage of Flashed\, Whimsical\, and Seizures. \nLength\nThere is no minimum word count\, but please keep your fiction and nonfiction submissions under 3\,500 words. Poetry must be under two typed pages. \nSubmission period category limits\nWe will only accept the following number of submissions per submission category: Fiction and nonfiction is capped at no more than two submissions per submission period. Poetry is limited to three submissions per submission period. \nMultiple submissions\nWe do not accept multiple submissions within the same document/file. Each submission (fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry\, art\, photography) must be submitted individually. \nSimultaneous submissions\nSimultaneous submissions are completely fine with us. DESCRIPTION:Our title is Good News….? The work “gospel” really means good news. But is what we regard as good news always good news? Even the loveliness of Christmas and the birth of the special baby is tinged with sadness; the beautiful Coventry carol isn’t about the little baby Jesus but about one of the children who was going to be slaughtered because Herod thought a new king had arrived. \nMany of the Jews who survived the Holocaust fled to Israel … only to be plunged into another conflict that has flared up time and time again. And look what’s happening now. \nGreat\, World War II ended in 1945. In 1947 the Indian sub-continent was torn apart. \nOn 20 April 1889 a woman was delighted to have given birth to a baby boy she named Adolf. Her husband would be pleased. Only he grew up to be abused by a step-father and in turn did his own abusing. Big time. \nYes\, the technology for electric vehicles is improving all the time. Except that many electronic parts come from the Ukraine and most of the lithium for the batteries comes from Afghanistan. And what of the carbon footprint that making them creates? \nIt seems we can’t do right for doing wrong. \nThere may be a sense of “be careful what you wish for”. \nOr: is the good news a trace of hope in a bleak time? Perhaps those elements of our lives for which we should be grateful? \nAnother thought: good news doesn’t sell newspapers. Therefore there are a lot of good news stories that don’t get told. Can you unearth one? \nPerhaps even what looks like bad news is actually good. \n\nHow to Submit\n\n\nPlease name your file as your story antholgy  e.g.  Finding the Butterfleis Good news ….?\n\nTry to avoid having the word “Good News” in your title but if you must make sure there are other words.   \n\n\nTexts should be:\n\nBetween 1\,000 and 5\,000 words \nPreviously unpublished \nDouble-spaced (Please do not put an extra double-space between paragraphs but do indent new paragraphs – use the Word paragraph settings to set this up) \nIn a regular font – e.g. Times New Roman or Arial\, 12 point \n\nYour name should not appear anywhere on your text. \nPlease use the header and footer function in Word to create headers and footers. Include the title of your story and the anthology in the header and page numbers in the footer.\n\n\nPlease adhere to these guidelines even if they sound pernickety – it really helps us if you submit this way. Although we wouldn’t necessarily reject your story if it was fantastic and you’d done something a little out of kilter\, if you’re borderline or your story is very similar to another this could be a deciding factor.

DESCRIPTION:For this issue\, our theme is flower language – take that as you will. Hanihaki\, Victorian declarations of betrayal and hurt\, or how plants communicate with each other and the world around them. Alternatively\, anything we haven’t listed here – the weirder the better! Hit us with what you’ve got! \nISSUE 3 Theme: Flower Language\n \nSpring’s approaching here in Western New York\, and thus we’ll begin to see the snowdrops and daffodils make their way up through the ground or snow. Sometimes\, both! For this issue\, we’re looking for pieces that incorporate aspects of flower language into the piece or wholly embody the concept – we aren’t particular subscribers to any “one” flower language. DESCRIPTION:West has always been more than mere direction\, a setting sun\,  evening. In lands now known by many as the United States of America\,  West invokes a fraught mythology of wilderness and conquest\, of destiny and riches\, of jackrabbit homesteads and romantic distances\, of cowboys  and bears. For so long these symbols have dominated our histories of  these lands\, centering whiteness and masculinity in a rugged\, difficult  terrain. But the West and its frontier have always been strange\, full of contradictions\, queer even. As Josh Garrett-Davis\, a curator\, scholar  at the Gene Autry Museum of the American West\, posits of the regional  West\, “[It is] a borderland—or two-or-more-sided frontier—where old and  new coexist\, collaborate\, fight\, innovate\, [holding] ample grounds for  new stories.” \nThe West as we understand it has never been uninhabited. People have  thrived in communion with these lands for thousands of years. Flora and fauna\, too. Where some see vacant desert\, or land to be occupied for the next housing development\, we cast our eyes upon resilient life\, those who understand the importance of water and resource conservation. In South Dakota\, Indigenous water advocates protest pipeline routes\, while Chicano artists muralize the scar of a border wall with the painting of  roses. \nWe call contributors to conceive of the West beyond its conventional and colonialized framework. What happens when the dam breaks\, when waters flow along their pre-colonial course and stewardship is returned to the original caretakers of the land? There are many ways to deconstruct a dam\, an archetype\, to unearth histories long-buried in sand or alpine forest. The West is multiple and many. \nIn the next issue of About Place Journal\, we invite you to consider and reimagine all things West. Send us your visual poems and performances\, your experimental stories and essays\, your art classified  by no other name than art. As we decenter traditional subjects and propagandized histories of this ambiguous region\, share with us your witness and protests\, your lineages who have lived here longer than the word itself and this country.
