Send us your best poems\, short stories\, and essays about the fae as seen from a Pagan/polytheistic\, witchy\, and mythological point of view. Send us poems about the peri of ancient Persia\, Marie de France writing her famous lais\, the favorite trees of the Good Neighbors\, or Nicnevin of Scottish lore. Send us short stories about the armored fairies of the Orkney Islands\, an urban fantasy about a lawyer who specializes in negotiating with fairies\, a retelling of a classic fairy tale (with Fairy Godparent)\, or a story about a father trying to cure his child of elfshot. Send us essays about the impact of Lucy Allen Paton’s research on later scholars\, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Theosophical view of fairies\, fairies as fallen angels\, or the collection and composition of the Childe Ballads. \nSubmission Guidelines \nWe’re looking for hymns to Odin and Inanna and Sekhmet and Pele. Prayers to Hermes and Brigid and Asherah and Amaterasu-omikami. Short stories featuring (or otherwise referencing) Lugh and Yinepu and Hekate. Every poetic form\, from sonnet to rhyming couplet to free form\, is acceptable. There is no set length. \nAny genre of short story is welcome\, from mystery to fantasy to true lifeish to reimaginings of classic myths\, provided the Deities and heroes are treated respectfully (no bashing someone else’s Gods\, please!). Please limit your story to 3000 words or less (though a smidge over is fine). \nWe are also interested in reviews of: classic works of literature (such as new translations of The Eddas or The Iliad); books about the ancient world; books by modern Pagan authors about contemporary Paganism/s; academic journals and popular magazines that deal with Pagan themes or issues of interest to Pagans\, such as The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion\, Biblical Archaeology Review and witches&pagans; and comic books and graphic novels. \nWe are also interested in essays that address the nature of the Deities\, the mythologies of the various pantheons\, folklore\, ritual\, et cetera and et cetera. So\, for example\, we would be keen to read your essay on Hermanubis and how He relates to Hermes and Anubis. Or\, your essay examining primary sources for The Cailleach. Or\, a discussion of the evolution of Veles from (benevolent) God of the Underworld to (Christian) demon and how Polish and Slavic Pagans are resurrecting His worship. \nSimultaneous submissions are fine\, but please let us know as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. \nThe Big No-Nos. We absolutely WILL NOT accept submissions of writing or artwork created with AI software (e.g.\, Midjourney\, ChatGPT). DESCRIPTION:Our fourth standard issue – themed around the idea of Mending – is now open for submissions until DECEMBER 12th. \nMending in the traditional sense – fixing a hole in a dress\, darning a sock – is a long\, slow\, focused process. Mending is patient\, physical\, and persistent; when one is mending\, they have not yet reached the destination of healed\, but are presently participating in the act of healing.\n\nWhat does it mean to be present and active in the process of healing? When something needs to be fixed\, how do you begin to put the pieces back together? Where do you locate processes of mending and healing in your body? In your everyday routines? In your actions\, both intentional and non-intentional?\n\nFor Jelly Squid‘s fourth standard issue\, we’d like you to send us work that reflects on the idea of mending as a slow process of repair. In addition to more conventionally multispecies/nonhuman narratives\, I’m particularly interested in works by/featuring alterhuman characters and themes\, and am looking for the complex\, imaginative\, thoughtful over the polemic/educational. \nRegular fwp length guidelines apply (up to 1500 words/no more than 3 pages of poetry/hybrid pieces). \nPlease submit via Duosuma; unless we have made prior arrangements with you\, email submissions will not be considered. We hear it most often in the context of celebrity\, cashiers\, counselors\, and colleagues – unreturned attachments we form out of unmet needs. \nBut what if PARA/SOCIAL is more than a warning label?  What if PARA/SOCIAL signals possibility? \nTo write into PARA/SOCIAL is to explore: \n\nThe tenderness of feeling known by someone who does not know you.\nThe estrangement of being “with” people while remaining apart.\nThe creative sparks that fly in parallel play — lives brushing close\, never fully merging.\nThe edges where community becomes illusion\, and illusion shapes community.\n\nFor this issue we invite work that traces the edges of intimacy and illusion. DESCRIPTION:Home on the Range: Poems of the Queer Pastoral \nWe’re thrilled to announce a new book\, coming in 2027 and edited by Caleb Nichols. Home on the Range: Poems of the Queer Pastoral will collect together exciting contemporary poets  writing about queerness and nature\, helping create a new canon of LGBTQ+ writers in a genre that has traditionally been off-limits to them. \nThe book will celebrate and complicate a poetics of queer nature\, from redefining the boundaries between the urban\, the rural\, and the wilderness\, to rendering the ways in which queer people make their homes in the pastoral traditions which have so often excluded them. Send us your strangest\, sexiest\, thirstiest\, poems that\, broadly speaking\, fit with or interrogate the theme of queer pastoral. Published examples of the genre include Richard Scott’s poem\, ‘Pastoral’\, from his excellent collection Soho\, Mícheál McCann’s ‘Late Blight’ from Devotion\, or Seán Hewitt’s ‘Dryad’ from Tongues of Fire\, but many other possibilities abound. We welcome poems that celebrate queerness in nature; poems that queer the idea of nature; poems that bring the natural world into urban or queer spaces or situations; poems that complicate and/or interrogate these ideas. \nThis call is open to queer writers at any stage of their careers: from widely published poets to first-time submitters and everyone in-between. You may submit 1-3 poems on the theme\, but please only submit once.\nThe book will be edited by Caleb Nichols and released via fourteen poems in early 2027. We will have an open call for all queer poets that feel moved by the themes\, whether published or new to writing. What sort of butch-femme future are we building together? \nSinister Wisdom’s Butch-Femme Renaissance issue is interested in all genres and styles of writing from butch-femme identified lesbian\, dyke\, queer\, gender non-conforming and trans folks. If you live a butch-femme lifestyle or see yourself in butch-femme dynamics — or have something to say about why you don’t — we want to hear from you. \nWe are especially interested in reported work — interviews with local community groups\, Q&As\, grassroots organizing features\, essays\, sex and dating topics. DESCRIPTION:Puerto del Sol is seeking work which engages with the theme of Doublethink \nDoublethink: a paradox of the mind. Yes\, doublethink as in: Orwellian. As in: TikTok propaganda. Fact and opinion fused in contradiction. Reality v.s. Reality. The two wolves within. Self induced hypnosis\, self denial. Patriotism. The state as victim but powerful. The oppressed as weak but dangerous. The performance of a lie. The proletariat. The politique. Doublespeak. Doubling back. Words obscured and disguised.  \nSend us work that navigates this dystopia\, this manipulation; these reversals. Work that traverses the wastelands of distortion. What is at odds with your own sense of reality? With the Party? Have we fallen down a Reddit rabbit hole of indoctrination? Will we make it out the other side? Give us the feeling of contradiction. To know and not to know\, and the choices between. \nThis themed feature will appear as part of our Spring 2026 print issue. SUMMARY:PFN - Asymptote Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Attention
DESCRIPTION:SUBMIT TO THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF OUR SPECIAL FEATURE: ON ATTENTION \nIn an age of fractured focus\, how do we attend—to each other\, to the world\, to the overlooked? \nIn response to the overwhelming number of submissions we received (100 submissions in six weeks) to our original call\, we have decided to organize at least one more installment of this Special Feature. \nSimone Weil once called attention “the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Mary Oliver claimed it was our “endless and proper work.” We are seeking works of fiction\, literary nonfiction\, and poetry—written originally in English or translated into English—that engage with the politics and poetics of attention: its scarcity and its cultivation. We welcome responses that cross borders—of genre\, of geography\, of language—and expand our understanding of what it means to look closely\, to listen fully\, to dwell in the present. Submissions must be sent through Submittable.\n \nYou may submit creative work of no more than 5\,000 words by one author in total. For this Special Feature\, we will consider works originally written in English as well as works translated into English. Here\, again\, is our call: \nIn an age of fractured focus\, how do we attend—to each other\, to the world\, to the overlooked? \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES \nAsymptote welcomes submissions of hitherto unpublished translated poetry\, fiction\, nonfiction and drama; certain types of original English-language nonfiction\, including literary and critical writing. Please note the following genre-specific and general guidelines. \nPoetry \nPlease send up to 10 pages of poetry translated into English. If the originals are included in the submission\, the length of the entire document may reach 20 pages (that is\, a maximum of 10 pages of translated work accompanied by 10 pages of original material). Please start each poem or section of a long poem on a new page unless the work absolutely demands to be read without page breaks. \nFiction\nThe submission might include one or more works of short fiction or excerpts of a longer work translated into English. Please send no more than 5\,000 words in total. \nLiterary Nonfiction \nThis includes genres such as memoir\, despatch (reportage)\, travelogue and the occasional essay. Nonfiction submissions must be work translated into English\, except for essays about translation\, which may be written in English. To get a stronger sense of what we are looking for\, go through the past articles that we have published. Send no more than 5\,000 words in total. \n  \nGENERAL GUIDELINES \nAll submissions should be sent as one Microsoft Word attachment (as a .doc file\, please) via Submittable. \nSubmissions must not have been previously published. \nSimultaneous submissions are permitted\, but we ask in return that you notify us by email as soon as you learn of an acceptance elsewhere. \n  \nSubmission Fee: $10\n
