Do you understand women’s music as pedestrian\, thrilling\, conservative and/or a site for resistance? \nThis upcoming issue of Sinister Wisdom will be a holistic retrospective on the women’s music cultural movement. We invite contributions that both reflect and shed new light on the complex herstories of the women’s music movement—joys\, sorrows\, triumphs\, challenges\, and lessons. Whether you write about the things we throw away\, ignore\, discard\, or scavenge for\, we want to read your poems\, prose\, and hybrid works. How do you define trash? How does trash intersect with our ecological and social spheres and communities? How do we live\, breathe\, and write trash? In what ways do we embody\, become\, reject what is worthless? Do you think trash is beautiful\, valuable\, something to be treasured? Who defines what is or is not our filth? \nSend us your work about treasures you’ve reclaimed\, leftovers\, pulpiness\, messiness\, griminess\, and excessiveness. DESCRIPTION:As we embark on our twelfth issue amid the spring of a solar eclipse\, we turn our attention to the vast expanse and endless awe that is our celestial ceiling. We sojourn into soft\, vacant space\, illuminate with drifting\, cosmic light. How are we connected – to ether\, each other – as we witness again our midday sun become nothing more than a corona of light embracing our lunar sister? What fragments of light reach us? \n“Humans became human when they started looking up” – a Delphi tour guide told us this when we pondered the mountain peaks from afar\, speaking of celestial abyss we wonder about the explosions and ruptures which catalog our dreams above our very heads as we turn\, in our own moments of stillness\, on an Earth with such mighty force we do not notice\, yet it rules everything surrounding everything. Magic! \nAstronauts ponder the depths of the space belly illuminating the galaxy\, the velvet frontier of meaning. Planets aligning\, lunar energy moving ripples upon the water and shifting the whole of the galaxy. Moons clinging to the bellies of planets like dear companions. Companionship and space as a relationship to the offerings of potential. The galaxy is a soup and the planets are the bobbing meatballs. \nEclipse is the hovering of two beings meeting in a dance of universe\, blocking\, occultation of two bodies rupturing the sight line before your eye. Shadowing of the sun\, veiling the bride of life in an obscure darkness. The atmosphere is a blanket of time. \nCelestial bodies held in orbit around one another. What are our gravitational pulls? What kismet and timing allow for one to shroud the other so that a halo of light might frame the moon? What does this mean for other moments that feel cosmic? For moments that might be in alignment / misalignment / disalignment? What might be other natural or forced altered perspectives? \nWe want your whimsy\, spaced-out dreams\, your illuminations and darkness. We want your astrological projections and zodiac antics. We want your universe unveiled within Issue 12 CELESTIAL ECLIPSE. \nWHAT WE LOOK FOR:\nHere at Tiny Spoon\, we are especially interested in experimental work\, although not exclusively. DESCRIPTION:By some research estimates\, 98 percent of climate and environmental reporting is negative. Climate stories tend to focus on the overall issue and impact by explaining climate science or consequences. Very few focus on action or offer examples of what successful and inspiring collective climate action looks like. \nPsychologists have been studying how stories about climate change affect people. They tell us that the doom and disaster narratives that dominate newsfeeds often lead us to withdraw\, shut down and feel isolated. Stories about climate solutions and actions do the opposite. Narratives and art that center solutions\, introduce us to everyday climate heroes\, and showcase the joy discovered through community engagement often lead to feelings of agency and possibility. \nThe “Climate Stories in Action” series will expand our vision of climate activism and help people imagine meaningful ways to be involved. We are inviting storytellers to submit poetry\, nonfiction\, and fiction that showcase climate activism in professional\, civic and community life. We are interested in stories that help shift our cultural mindset from despair to creative possibility and from isolation to collective purpose. \nWe welcome submissions about how being a part of this critical climate movement can help us live better\, more meaningful\, lives. We are interested in stories that help us dream about what is possible\, that bring to life why collective action matters\, and that inspire people to find or redefine their roles in the climate movement. \nThis groundswell of new climate stories—narratives and art that people can see themselves in—is essential to building the collective response needed at this hingepoint for humans and the planet. \nSubmission Period and Payment\nPriority submission deadline is April 8\, 2024\, at midnight. We want stories set in and around the nation’s more often overlooked locales—isolated small towns\, remote reservations\, bedroom communities\, and other underrepresented areas of Canada. Give us rural superheroes\, backwater supervillains\, and tales of characters/communities at a crossroads.How does place impact your character? Are they unable to reconcile their superpowers with their residence or is it the people who pose the problem? Does your hero struggle to maintain a secret identity where everyone knows everyone or do they find that familiarity weirdly comforting given the challenges of being superpowered?\n\nSubmission Guidelines:  \n\nWord Count: 500-3500\nOur editors are based in Northern Ontario\, but our contributors can be from across Canada.\nCanadian characters living their ‘super’ lives while still retaining their national/regional identity/connection.\nStories that know the tropes and cliches—those applied to superheroes and Canada both—and either explore or subvert them.\nHeroes that reconcile their superpowers with the limits of their home—geographic\, political\, economic…heck\, tie in the weather—so long as they’re original characters with strong connections to specific parts/cultures of Canada.\nHave your protagonists face situations unique to our nation/their region thereof. DESCRIPTION:“We are dismissed as emotional. It is enough to make you emotional.” \n—Sara Ahmed \nMany scholars and artists have remarked on the importance of anger in art and everyday life. In her 1981 keynote presentation to the National Women’s Studies Conference\, Audre Lorde delivered the indicting line “anger is loaded with information and energy\,” reminding us that such anger should not be considered a source of shame\, but evidence of the injustices that “brought that anger into being.” \nThis issue seeks to hold space for the “ugly feelings” we are often told to tame\, to clean up\, and to quiet: our rage\, our annoyance\, our frustration. We aim to honor the wisdom of unruly emotions. We understand that feelings cannot be boxed and separated from one another\, and we acknowledge the muddling of it all. Rage with a side of grief? Anger with a dash of paranoia? Vexed yet anxious? We get it. Rage comes in different forms\, tempos\, and decibels and we want to amplify it! \nFor this issue\, we are looking for pieces that seek to express the complexities of such a charged emotion. We welcome expressions\, critiques\, and meditations on rage in a variety o\, and short fiction. We encourage perspectives that contextualize the social\, cultural\, and political realities of anger. Who is allowed to express their anger? How\, and when\, is rage a symptom of our social conditions and dispositions? What forces attempt to stifle such a resistance? We are looking for work that seeks to reorient our understanding of emotions and their function in “polite” society. \nFor this issue\, please submit:  \nProse: up to 4\, 000 words \nPoetry: up to four poems \nOnly previously unpublished work will be considered.
