SUMMARY:P - Abridged 0-101: Rebecca – theme: Haunting\, Convention\, Repression & Resistance
DESCRIPTION:ABRIDGED 0 -101: REBECCA SUBMISSION CALL\n‘From the smoky stacks of Merthyr…to a crumbling Manderlay’\n\nRebecca is in every picture we hang on our wall\, every shirt we slide from the hanger\,  every meal we lift to our mouths. The rooted tradition. The gripping convention. The language we find on our tongues. The shimmer of nostalgia. Rebecca is the hands of the past around the present\, intoxicatingly assured\, especially when we’re not. Rebecca knows. Rebecca was here first. The conspicuous absence. The room we can’t escape. Rebecca is the double\, the other\, the could have been. Rebecca made the footsteps we’re walking in. The mask and the masked. If we think too much about Rebecca\, we’ll start to wonder who we are. In place of our own names\, we write ‘Rebecca’. \nRemember Rebecca. Bury Rebecca. Love Rebecca. Fear Rebecca. Resist Rebecca. Fall into Rebecca. Wear Rebecca. Become Rebecca. Not just a person but personification. Not just a queen but a kingdom. Nobody’s mother but mother to millions. Rebecca waits in the dark and under the surface. Rebecca is the power of expectation and envy. Rebecca is the feared and desired. Rebecca is the rule and the resistance. Rebecca is wild in every attic. Rebecca is not what she seems. The skeleton in the cupboard. The corset in the drawer. The strings around our wrists. Rebecca is both the gate and the break-out. Rebecca’s sins cannot be spoken. Rebecca is our own unspoken sin. Rebecca made you do it. Rebecca won’t forget. Rebecca returns and returns. The house we exist in\, the house we keep running from\, the house that calls us back\, and the lit match that could burn it all down. \nOfficial memory is used to sanitise\, exclude and forget. Who remembers the tenant farmers\, who rebelled against the tollgates\, the Poor Laws and the Landowners in 19th Century Wales? Men\, dressed as women\, called themselves the Daughters of Rebecca (referencing Rebecca of biblical fame who talked about taking the gates of those who hate them) and destroyed toll-gates and attacked work-houses. The authorities called out the army was to quell the riots. This ‘official’ memory is still used as a weapon to attack the vulnerable\, the weak and the lost. From the smoky stacks of Merthyr…to a crumbling Manderlay. \nAbridged 0-101 ‘Rebecca’ invites poetry and/or art submissions on the conflicting themes of haunting\, convention\, repression and resistance. You may submit up to three poems to abridged@ymail.com which must be in a Word or PDF format. Unusually formatted poems we prefer in an PDF format\, material that is more straightforward in Word. Art should be in JPEG or similar format and at least 300dpi. Please note that this issue is A5 landscape shaped. Please also send a short bio and put your name and address on the email or it might get lost in the Spam folder. We can’t send proofs so please send the final version of your poem. The deadline for submissions is the 31st of May 2024. \n‘From the smoky stacks of Merthyr…to a crumbling Manderlay’ \nRebecca is in every picture we hang on our wall\, every shirt we slide from the hanger\,  every meal we lift to our mouths. SUMMARY:PF - Carmen Et Error Seeking Submissions
DESCRIPTION:The cause of Roman poet Ovid’s exile was “carmen et error”\, a poem and a mistake. We want your poems and your mistakes. Fiction that falls between genres. Weird\, wild poems. Anything speculative\, daring\, or just plain odd. Carmen et Error is a micro-journal/newsletter that features three-four pieces of exceptional work each quarter. \nWe’re looking for great work\, although we don’t mind if it’s a little rough around the edges (we’ll forgive an error or two)!  If you want to get a feel for what we like\, take a look at our past issues. \n  \nSUBMISSIONS\n  \n\n\n\nSubmit up to two pieces in a .docx or .pdf document to carmenetsubmissions@gmail.com. Please make sure the name of the document is the name of the piece so “Jabberwocky_poem” rather than “Carmen_submission”.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoems should be no more than 40(ish) lines. Fictions no more than 400(ish) words.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe publish translations where permission to publish is secured in advance from the original author or their estate.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA cover letter is not necessary but say hi!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease include a short biographical statementof no more than 100 words.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimultaneous submissions are fine\, but please let us know ASAP if its accepted elsewhere.\n\n\n\n  \n\nWe do not publish or platform hate speech in any way. No transphobia/racism/sexism etc.\, please.\nWe do not accept submissions written by AI\, and reserve the right to permanently ban “writers” of AI fiction from future submissions opportunities.\nWe aim to reply to your submission within two weeks of submissions closing. Please query if you have not heard back in that time.\nWe ask for non-exclusive\, one-time\, worldwide rights to publish your work in digital formats\, and then to archive it indefinitely. We also nominate our published works for prizes including the Pushcart Prize\, Best Small Fictions and Best of the Net. If we do choose your work\, we will email at the time to confirm.\nWe are unfortunately unable to pay contributors at this time\, and we make no money from your work. However\, we occasionally run events and readings through The Braag and we do ask contributors to fill paid readings slots at our online events.

Please submit only once during each reading period. All poetry accepted poems are automatically considered for our Editors’ Prize; we often award a Translation Prize as well. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow does RHINO work? \nEvery submission is reviewed by at least three editors\, any of whom can nominate a poem to be brought to our editorial table; there the poem is read aloud\, discussed\, and voted on by all the editors in attendance. Majority votes win; no editor has any more or less decision-making power than any other. \nOur tastes are deliberately eclectic\, and we value the dynamic discussions we have around our editorial table. We take a “step forward\, step back” approach to our discussions\, making sure that all editors’ voices are heard. \nWe build our journal poem by poem\, organizing it alphabetically by author’s last name\, letting the poems speak to each other as they wish to. That is\, we don’t seek out poems by theme or kind. We select poems on their own merits\, not by the reputation of the poet who submitted it to us. Every poem is a new beginning. Every poem is a fresh start. \nWe are curious about who submits to us\, and we hope everyone feels welcome and encouraged to submit. We are looking for ways to reflect more deeply on our editorial practices\, to stretch our own ideas of what excellence is\, and to challenge ourselves to read beyond our comfort zones. \nNone of our editors are paid for their work. We create this journal because we believe in it\, we believe in the work we publish\, and we believe in the importance of collaboration and artistic community. \nWhat to Send:  \n\n\n3-5 poems or flash fiction/nonfiction pieces (500 words or fewer)\, totaling no more than 5 pages \n\n\nA single\, typed document (.doc\, .docx\, or .pdf) \n\n\nUnpublished work only (We don’t accept any previously published work\, including work that has appeared online\, or work already planned for publication in a chapbook\, book\, or elsewhere.) \n\n\nA copy of the work in its original language if you are sending a translation; the translator is responsible for obtaining the author’s permission to use their material. \n\n\nYour best version. We can’t accept edits or revisions once you submit. \n\n\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions\, but trust that you will withdraw your poem or packet promptly if accepted elsewhere. \n\n\n\nUpon Publication: \nAccepted poets will receive one copy of the issue featuring their poem\, and the opportunity to purchase additional copies at a discount ($7 + shipping). Accepted poems will be published on the RHINO website at least one year after print publication.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Twin Bill. Theme: All-Star Game
DESCRIPTION:Submissions \nArtwork by Scott Bolohan\nSubmissions are open for our All-Star Game issue. \nFiction \nWe are interested in short stories up to roughly 5\,000 words. Anything we deem significantly over the word count will not be read out of respect for the number of submissions our editors receive. \nWe are looking for writing that displays a strong personal style and a connection to the game of baseball. Most of all\, we are excited by stories that situate baseball in a broader context\, beyond the action of an individual game or at-bat. The more surprising connection to baseball\, the better. There is a $25 honorarium per accepted story. \nCreative Nonfiction \nCreative Nonfiction at The Twin Bill is a place for true stories\, boldly told. We have no formal requirements or word count\, and we encourage experimentation in the name of contemporary storytelling. \nThat said\, we urge writers to consider their story carefully and to use not a word more than strictly necessary. \nThere is a $15 honorarium per accepted piece. \nPoetry \nPlease send up to five poems per issue. We love baseball from all eras\, but we would particularly like to see poems of a more contemporary style or subject matter. \nThere is a $10 honorarium per accepted poem. \nGuidelines \nWe are on Submittable. Please submit here. There is a $3 submission fee. Writers retain all rights to their work. We are only interested in previously unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but please let us know if it is accepted elsewhere. Send any submissions\, questions\, or ideas to scott@thetwinbill.com. We would love to hear from you.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Broken City Magazine Seeking Submissions for the "Do It Yourself" Issue
DESCRIPTION:Issue 34 Submission Guidelines\nThe Broken City is currently accepting submissions for its summer 2024 edition: DIY. \nThat’s right\, readers\, it’s a Do It Yourself issue. No\, you don’t need to make the magazine for us—we want to hear about crafts\, construction\, repairs\, destruction\, recipes\, art and inventions (time machines included\, working or not). \nSend your poetry\, fiction\, essays\, illustrations and photography to thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com. \nDeadline is: June 1\, 2024. Submitters will be contacted after that date\, with news of acceptance or rejection. \n\nGeneral Submission Guidelines\n1. The Broken City will—at least briefly—consider any type of submission\, the most common being: poetry\, fiction\, essays\, comics\, illustrations\, photography\, music/book reviews. \n2. The Broken City is currently a non-paying publication. It is primarily a venue for new writers in search of exposure\, publishing credits and glory\, but does not discriminate against established submitters. \n3. The Broken City retains one-time publication rights to accepted submissions. Future rights to individual works published in The Broken City remain with the author. \n4. Written Submissions: Prose (fiction\, essay\, etc.) submissions must not exceed 3\,000 words. Poetry submissions should contain no more than five poems. \nText submissions should be attached to an e-mail as a document that has the extension .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt. Please\, no archaic or oddball extensions like .wpd. If there’s absolutely no way you can produce a .doc\, .docx\, .rtf or .txt file\, paste your submission into the body of your e-mail. \nPlace your name at the top of the first page of the document. Also\, use a single\, common\, easy-to-read font for the entirety of the document—no Comic Sans or Lisboa Light. Fancy fonts do not make your submission look cool; they make it unreadable. \n5. Visual Submissions: Photos\, illustrations\, artwork\, etc. should be high-quality and in either .jpg\, .gif\, .png\, .bmp\, .pdf or .tif format. Multiple\, large files should be sent in multiple e-mails (maximum 10 MB per e-mail). Photo series are preferred but individual shots will be considered as well. \n6. Previously published work and simultaneous submissions are permitted. Please notify The Broken City if your work is accepted elsewhere after you submit. \n7. Accepted work will be edited to correct spelling\, grammar\, punctuation\, sentence structure and word use errors. The Broken City will consult authors before making changes that would significantly alter the content of a submission\, but it should be expected that minor revisions will be made unilaterally. Poetry will not be edited without consent\, except to replace frustratingly odd combinations of dashes with an em dash. \n8. After submitting\, add thebrokencitymag@yahoo.com to the contacts or safe-senders list of your e-mail account to ensure that future e-mails from The Broken City don’t end up in your spam folder. \n9. Do not add The Broken City to your group mailing lists. The magazine does not want to receive news about your upcoming events or announcements that your blog has been updated. \n10. The Broken City receives hundreds of submissions per issue. The magazine is therefore unable to provide individualized feedback. If your submission is not accepted\, you will be sent a curt but polite rejection letter. \n11. Please read these educational essays from Taddle Creek magazine: \n\nSpaces after periods… one: good\, two: bad \nProper apostrophe use

SUMMARY:PFN - Conjunctions: Revenants\, The Ghost Issue
DESCRIPTION:SUBMISSIONS\n\n\nSubmitting to Conjunctions\nPRINT ISSUE \nWe will accept submissions for our fall 2024 print issue\, Conjunctions:83\, Revenants\, The Ghost Issue\, via Submittable from May 13 – June 1\, 2024. All submissions will also be considered for our weekly online magazine.\n\n\n\n\n\nCONJUNCTIONS:83\nRevenants\, The Ghost Issue\nFall 2024\nCoedited by Joyce Carol Oates and Bradford Morrow\n\nGhosts\, wraiths\, specters. Poltergeists\, phantoms\, shades. They manifest in many shapes and dispositions in our lives and the literatures of all cultures. From the Egyptian to the Tibetan Book of the Dead\, from the Homeric epics to Shakespeare’s King Hamlet\, from the Victorian ghosts of Sheridan Le Fanu\, Violet Hunt\, and M. R. James to Amos Tutuola’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts\, from the ethereal creatures of Poe to the startlingly “realistic” ghosts of Henry James and Edith Wharton\, phantasmagoric beings mingle with the living. Nature itself may be “haunted”—an unknowable presence hostile to human intrusion\, as in Algernon Blackwood’s classic “The Willows.” Sometimes a ghostly haunting is metaphoric; often it is literal. The Japanese jorōgumo ghost appears as a beautiful maiden but is a lethal spider monster. Buddhism’s hungry ghosts have enormous stomachs and tiny mouths that represent how worldly desires blocked their path to nirvana.\n\n\nNote: If you miss the Submittable window\, we are also open for submissions by postal mail year-round. Please see below for instructions. \n  \nWHAT TO SUBMIT \nConjunctions publishes short- and long-form fiction\, poetry\, creative nonfiction\, and hybrid texts. We do not publish academic essays or book reviews. \nAll submissions must be in English and previously unpublished. We will consider works in translation for which the translator has secured the rights. \nAlthough we have no official restrictions regarding word count\, most of the manuscripts we select for publication are under eight thousand words long. For poetry submissions\, we suggest sending half a dozen poems\, depending on length. \nWe strongly suggest that writers new to Conjunctions read our recent issues to acquaint themselves with our publications. Subscriptions are available here.

SUMMARY:PFN - Moss Piglet Zine Call for Submissions. Theme: Dance
DESCRIPTION:The Krazines welcome your submissions of prose (fiction and nonfiction) and poetry for its July 2024 issue of its full-color\, perfect bound professional produced art and literature journal\, Moss Piglet. \nFor our submission guidelines\, click HERE. \nEach month\, we provide a new theme to inspire artists and authors to create their work. Our theme for July is “Dance.” You may be inspired to create work based on the literal or metaphorical meanings of dance. You might pick a popular phrase or song lyric\, e.g.\, “dance the night away\,” “dancing on the ceiling\,” “dancing in the dark\,” on which to base your creation. You might be inspired by a favorite dancer\, their moves\, their life\, or their words. Let your imagination dance. \nSubmissions of Stories\, Essays & Poems\nPlease send text submissions in .doc\, .docx or PDF formats to info@krazines.com. \nAs our publication is digest-sized\, we prefer short poems and prose pieces.  Your stories and essays may go up to 1\,000 words\, but anything beyond that total won’t be considered. \nYou may provide multiple submissions\, but don’t go crazy. Previously published poems will be considered for inclusion\, but must come with full attribution. \n\n\nContent Exclusions: Work of an overtly sexual nature\, or that promotes any form of hatred\, racism\, sexism\, or other expressions of intolerance will not be considered. \n\n\nWhere To Send Submissions: Submit your work by emailing us at editors@greeninkpoetry.co.uk – Please ensure that the email subject line includes “Summer Solstice”. \n\n\nSubmission Format: Please send your submissions formatted as a word document or PDF attached to an email\, or in the body of the email itself. \n\n\nOther Information\nWe will be publishing your submissions online\, so please do not submit your work unless you are happy for us to use this medium. This will require non-exclusive\, limited rights to publish your work and hold archival copies – all other rights remain with you\, and you will be fully credited. \nWe will do our best to preserve any formatting you include in your submission in the digital edition\, but there may be minor changes due to differences in format between your submission and our working document – we will take all possible steps to ensure your desired format is preserved. \nIf you need modifications to be made to your poem after it has been accepted\, or for a poem to be removed\, please contact us as soon as possible via editors@greeninkpoetry.co.uk and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs. \nIf you have any questions about our submission requirements\, or any other part of Green Ink Poetry and our digital or print collections\, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

SUMMARY:PFN - carte blanche magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Play"
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ISSUE 49 “PLAY”\nIt has been a dark and challenging few years for many of us. Hustle culture is celebrated and plowing through our work days can leave us exhausted. Sometimes we need to take a break from the seriousness of day-to-day life and binge-watch a favourite Marvel Universe show or indulge in some variation of Cards Against Humanity with our family and friends. \nThe theme for our upcoming issue 49 is ”Play.” We are interested in your narrative and poetic experiments\, odd stories\, humorous pieces\, weird fiction\, and the quirky. We ultimately leave “Play” up for your interpretation. Have fun! \nWe invite creators to submit previously unpublished pieces in the following genres: fiction\, poetry\, creative nonfiction\, translations (French to English)\, photography\, and comics for carte blanche issue 49\, “Play.” \ncarte blanche acknowledges the intersectionality of individuals’ lived experiences and aims to provide a welcoming and safe space for racialized and marginalized voices. We encourage and welcome submissions by individuals who identify as LGBTQ2S+\, BIPOC\, disabled\, and those who live with mental health challenges or neurodivergence. \nGENERAL GUIDELINES\nSimultaneous submissions: We accept simultaneous submissions. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are sending your piece elsewhere and withdraw your submission via Submittable if it is accepted somewhere else. \nUnpublished submissions: We do not accept submissions that have been previously published\, including on personal websites and social media. \nFrequency of submissions: We encourage you to submit to carte blanche no more than once a year unless solicited by an editor. \nRights: We ask for first world serial rights and the right to archive your work on the website. DESCRIPTION:YRLR Issue 20 Call for Submissions\nExploring Sound & Melody \n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Issue 20\, we are exploring the themes of sound and melody. We are inspired by Robert Frost:\n“He would declare and could himself believe\nThat the birds there in all the garden round\nFrom having heard the daylong voice of Eve\nHad added to their own an oversound\,\nHer tone of meaning but without the words.” \n—From “Never Again Would Birds’ Song Be the Same”\nIdeas we would love to see explored include: \n\nWhat is the most frightening sound you’ve ever heard?\nWhat is the most glorious sound you’ve ever heard?\nHow is nature the ultimate musician?\nDo you remember the first song that ever struck a chord in your soul?\nWhat do you suppose the last word to ever be spoken by a human will be?\nCan a body in motion be a melody\, too?\nHow can silence sometimes be the loudest sound of all?\nWhat sounds soothe your soul? From small arias like the clink of a spoon while stirring coffee\, or the roll of a marble over the ground\, to grand hymns\, like thunder?\nWhere do you go\, or what do you do\, to escape the noise of your own consciousness?\nHow do you find harmony in the chaotic clamor of humanity?\n\nWe accept fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry of all flavors\, from free verse to found. We are also interested in submissions that include raven artwork. \n\nSubmission Guidelines:\n\nAll texts should use 12-point New Roman font and be double spaced. Poetry may be single spaced. Text file attachments may be submitted in .doc\, .docx\, or .rtf. \n\nFiction and Nonfiction: Entries should not exceed ten pages in length. Just let us know as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. \nResponse time:  \n2 months on average.  \nPayment:  \nNo. At this time we do not offer payment for submissions. SUMMARY:N - Carcanet Press Open Call. Theme: Lives & Letters
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nCarcanet has a rich list of prose titles entailing critical volumes\, essays\, biographies and eccentric texts of various kinds. A close familiarity with the list will help in determining whether a proposal is likely to prosper in this highly selective area of Carcanet’s activity. A 5000 word extract and a publishing rationale are welcome. \nCarcanet will consider work sent in PDF form to Submissions@carcanet.co.uk. Please include an email and provide a digital address for our response. If you are an individual subscriber to PN Review\, please indicate this in your covering e-mail. \nThe Editors’ decision is final. Given the volume of submissions we receive\, it is not possible for us to offer feedback on work submitted. We discourage simultaneous submissions. \nCarcanet’s Lives and Letters list is various and eccentric. Proposals can be drawn from the Carcanet backlist itself or can entail work new to the list. Issues of copyright should be addressed in any proposal. Neglected English-language writers from around the Anglophone world and writers in translation will be considered. A 1000 word extract from the introduction and up to 20 pages of text are welcome.

Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases that contain a kireji\, or “cutting word”\, 17 on (phonetic units similar to syllables) in a 5\, 7\, 5 pattern\, and a kigo\, or seasonal reference. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as senryū. \nHaiku originated as an opening part of a larger Japanese poem called renga. These haiku written as an opening stanza were known as hokku and over time writers began to write them as stand-alone poems. Haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century. \n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind: \nFor haiku inspiration\, look closely at everything around you in nature\, at home\, at school\, and at work. Write your draft of a haiku\, letting yourself be free and creative. Then ask the following questions about your haiku to help you improve them.\n \n\nHow long is your haiku? It’s usually good to write in three lines of about 10 to 17 syllables. In Japanese\, you will want to stay with 5-7-5 sounds (‘mora’). In English\, haiku don’t have to be in the pattern of 5-7-5 syllables.\nSee this link if you want to know more. \nThe following questions are much more important to observe:\nDoes your haiku name or suggest one of the seasons—spring\, summer\, fall\, or winter? In Japanese\, a kigo or “season word” tells readers when the poem happens\, such as saying “tulips” for spring or “snow” for winter. This is one of the most important things to do in haiku.\nFor our contest this year\, you want to give it a Spring theme!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you should keep in mind (continued): \n\nDoes your poem make a “leap\,” by having two parts? In Japanese\, a kireji or “cutting word” usually cuts the poem into two parts (never three). It’s not just having two parts that matters\, though. Rather\, it’s the implication in the relationship of the two parts that matters. Giving your poem two often fragmentary parts is also one of the most important goals in haiku.\nIs your haiku about common\, everyday events in nature or human life? To help you do this\, describe what you experience through your five senses.\nDoes your poem give readers a feeling? It can do this by presenting what caused your feeling rather than the feeling itself. So others can feel what you felt\, don’t explain or judge what you describe.\nIs your poem in the present tense? To make your haiku feel like it’s happening right now\, use the present tense.\nDid you write from your own personal experience? When you write other kinds of poetry\, you can make things up\, but try not to do that with haiku. Memories are okay\, though.\nHow did you capitalize or punctuate your poem? Haiku are usually not sentences (they’re usually fragments)\, so they don’t need to start with a capital\, or end with a period.\nDoes your haiku avoid a title and rhyme? Haiku are not like other poems\, which may have these features. Haiku don’t have titles and rarely rhyme.\n\n(adapted from Michael Dylan Welch’s excellent blog: https://www.graceguts.com/essays/haiku-checklist) \nAnother source worth reading\, with some more historical and stylistic information is  HAIKU: A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN 5-7-5  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease contact: haiku@ejca.org

SUMMARY:F - Myths\, Gods & Immortals Anthology Series Seeking Submissions on Circe and Anansi
DESCRIPTION: Flame Tree are bringing you a brand new gorgeous hardcover series brimming with myths and short stories. \n  \nDiscover the mythology of humankind through its heroes\, characters\, gods and immortal figures. Myths\, Gods & Immortals brings together the new and the ancient\, familiar stories with a fresh and imaginative twist. Each book brings back to life a classic mythological or folkloric figure\, with completely new stories alongside the original tales. New and emerging writers from open submissions reveal hidden themes\, casting fresh perspectives on well-known stories\, alongside specially commissioned text on the origins and the cultural background of the mythology. We’ve already closed submissions for the first two books in the series\, Medusa and Odin\, where stories are still under consideration. We’re now opening up submissions for the next two books\, Circe and Anansi. \n \n\nCirce\nEnchantress\, goddess\, witch\, predatory seductress… Inevitably\, Circe has been best-known in these terms\, through the male gaze of Homer\, Hesiod et al.\, as interpreted by readers and storytellers until today. Rarely does the classic literature give us a rounded view of a woman subject to the same flaws and emotions as the rest of us: jealousy\, desire\, unrequited love; her witchcraft is perhaps not so much dreadful as awe-inspiring and led by nature. What we know of her story is piecemeal\, from many sources. This enriching collection will bring together new stories and ancient origins\, offering a wider perspective on the whole life of the enigmatic\, enchanting Circe. Stories submitted for consideration need to explore new or expanded angles to the character: have her follow alternative paths\, present different viewpoints\, give deeper background\, counter the patriarchal narrative and male gaze\, or perhaps pursue story lines that are hinted at in the original tales and poetry. \nSubmissions to: Circe@flametreepublishing.com \n  \nTerms:\n\nMultiple submissions are fine but must be in separate emails.\nSimultaneous submissions are fine but you must have the right to license your story in an anthology.\nFor accepted stories we pay Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) rates of 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories\, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints.\nWe will aim to read each story and confirm its status within 4 months of the submission deadline.\nPayment for the chosen stories will be made within 30 days of the final advertised publication date (see our website flametreepublishing.com for details)\, although some may be paid earlier than that.\nSubmission does not imply the right to publication. Each story will be read and assessed by the selection panel.\nLet us know in your submission email whether your story would be a reprint or is currently unpublished.\n\nImportant Notice about Submissions and Guidelines\nWe’re always looking for better ways of working so we’ve tweaked our submission process to allow us to read more stories\, and spend more time assessing the balance of our books. So follow these rules to avoid your story getting lost in our system! \n\nSubmissions must use the dedicated email address.\nThe subject line of the email must be the story title.\nThe file with the story must be attached to the email (.docx\, .doc or .rtf format).\nThe name of the file must match the name in the subject line.\nIf submitting more than one story\, please submit one story per email.\n\nOther useful tips for a more successful submission:\n\n\nThe file name of the submission must be the story name only.\nPlease just use spaces between words in the title (not _ or – ).\nIf the story name starts with A or The\, please use it at the beginning of the file name.\nIf you’d like to add some details about the story\, confirm if it’s new or a reprint\, or add a short bio of yourself\, please add to the body of the email not as an attachment.\nStory length is most likely to be successful at 3\,000-4\,000 words\, but we will still read stories slightly outside this range.\nIf submitting a story that has recently been submitted to us for consideration to another anthology\, please state this in the submission email.\nDeadline for submissions is 23rd June 2024.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Volume 7 of Shift: A Publication of MTSU Write. Theme: Bending\, Blurring\, & Breaking Genre (NPF)
DESCRIPTION:SHIFT Issue 7: Bending\, Blurring\, & Breaking Genre \n“All great works of literature either dissolve a genre or invent one.” -Charles J. Shields \nThe ability to organize things into neat little boxes & categories is something we love to do––genre is one such example. However\, people rarely fit so neatly into the boxes we are put in. Our identities & ways of knowing can be messy\, fraught\, complicated\, & language-transcending. Overtime\, our ideas of what genre is & what it can be are starting to align more closely with who we know ourselves to be\, too. \nConsider Walt Whitman’s creation of free verse poetry\, or Truman Capote’s unconventional blending of journalism & non-fiction novel writing for his book In Cold Blood. For SHIFT volume 7\, we ask you to place yourself in this tradition. Lean into ambiguity & leave us guessing. Toe the line between two worlds. Send us your favorite works that defy genre & conventional exceptions. Send us your poem that reads like a story\, your flash fiction that feels like a scene straight out of a play––hell\, maybe even a recipe that reads like a poem! Send us your Both/And. \nVOLUME 7 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES \nGeneral Guidelines: We do not accept previously published work. We do not accept work with song lyrics or any other copyrighted material that doesn’t fall under fair use or isn’t in the public domain. \nFormatting your manuscript: Do not submit PDFs—only Word documents. We prefer that all manuscripts be in 12-point type in any of the standard fonts (Times New Roman\, Cambria\, Calibri\, etc.). Number pages sequentially with page numbers positioned at the bottom center of the page and keep margins at 1”. \nSince we are bending\, breaking\, and blurring genres\, the following guidelines may be taken with a grain of salt\, but please do not create extra work for our small editing team. \nSubmissions of fiction-ish and creative non-fiction-ish work should be double-spaced. Poetry-ish submissions may be single-spaced. All lines of poetry-ish work should have a hard return at the end to preserve intended line formatting. Single space lines of poetry-ish pieces\, but include an extra line between stanzas. All play-ish need to follow proper screenplay format or they will automatically be rejected. Here’s a helpful link for your reference: https://ptfaculty.gordonstate.edu/lking/CPF_play_formatting2.pdf \nInclude a cover page with the title of the piece and author’s contact information (name\, email address\, address\, and telephone number). All work should be submitted with a bio that includes the name you wish to be included as your byline for your piece. \nSimultaneous submissions: MTSU Write wants every writer to have the greatest possible chance at acceptance. Therefore\, we accept multiple submissions from one writer. You may submit work in up to three genres. Please follow the guidelines for each genre listed below when submitting. \nSubmission fees: MTSU Write is a non-profit organization. We do not charge a fee for submissions. Our objective is to simply encourage literary excellence and creativity.  Writers whose work is accepted will receive one contributor’s copy. \nWORD COUNT GUIDELINES \nAlthough we are thrilled to see how you bend\, break\, and blur genres\, we are only human. Thus\, we must cap word counts for practical reasons. \nFiction and Short Story-ish: Flash fictionish pieces should be approximately 400-1\,000 words. Short storyish submissions may not exceed 5\,000 words. We accept any genre from literary fiction to sci-fi. Double-space the text of the manuscript. \nCreative Non-fiction-ish: Submissions of creative non-fiction should not exceed 5\,000 words. We accept personal essays\, essays on writing technique and process\, memoir excerpts\, travel writing\, journalistic essays\, etc. \nPoetry-ish Poetry submissions may be up to four pages in length and writers may submit up to four pieces of poetry. We accept poetry of all forms and genres\, but no translations. \nPlay-ish: Keep play-ish submissions to 10 minute or one-act forms. Follow the standard stage-play format when submitting. Here’s a helpful link for your reference: https://ptfaculty.gordonstate.edu/lking/CPF_play_formatting2.pdf \nIf these guidelines are a little too bendy\, broken\, or blurred for you\, feel free to shoot us your questions at shift@mts.edu \nFor more information about our mentoring program\, visit www.mtsu.edu/write For more information about SHIFT and to see past issues\, visit www.shift-write.com
