DESCRIPTION:For this special issue\, we’re looking for works of short\, flash\, or micro-fiction and creative nonfiction on the theme of “aperture.” In photography\, the aperture is the space through which light enters the camera. In architecture\, apertures are commonly windows or doors: points of access or boundary between the interior and exterior spaces. An aperture can be a point of connection\, or control. It can be an opening\, a gap\, a portal\, or chasm. An aperture can be a wound. A point of entry\, or of no return. In fiction\, we’re looking for braided flash or micro snapshots\, surrealist\, realist\, magically realist\, speculative\, or even auto-fiction; fiction encountering the aperture of the void\, fiction exploring grief\, or borders\, or time travel\, or birth. Fiction examining the artist\, the photographer\, the painter. In creative nonfiction\, we’re looking for lyric essays as snapshots\, or memoirs as explorations of experience oriented around a single entry point. We’re looking for hybrid works\, works of ekphrasis\, essays\, and more. Wildly creative interpretations of the theme of “aperture” are welcome\, as are the explicitly literal – send us your discoveries\, musings\, glimpses\, and memories as stories. Please ensure work is submitted in a legible\, serif font (think Times New Roman or Garamond). We’re not too fussed about size or spacing. Please nothing longer than 3500 words. If sending flash\, please send no more than 3 pieces of up to 1000 words each\, and micros of no more than 10 pieces of 100 words each. Accepted authors can expect to engage in a brief editorial process – we hope you will submit with a willingness to discuss recommended changes with the aim of enhancing your work for publication. \nWe are especially eager to publish pieces that engage with the work of marginalized and decentered people—Black and Brown creators\, LGBTQ+ creators\, and creators of all levels of dis/ability\, and to that end\, we invite creators to self-identify in their submissions. \nPlease note that Oyster River Pages will not publish any work that has been created\, in part or in full\, or in collaboration with generative artificial intelligence. Because of the popularity of this topic\, we do a new cat book approximately every eighteen months so here is another chance for you to share a story or two about the member of your family who just happens to walk on four feet! \nCats have always been considered companions and playmates that brighten our days and enrich our lives. What would we do without them? They are also wonderful and amazing teachers. The lessons we learn from our feline friends come in all shapes and sizes\, just like they do. Tell us the new thing your feline friend has taught you. How smart she is or how she outsmarted you! How he made you smile. How she “rescued” you after you “rescued” her. How he brought your family closer together\, helped you find love\, inspired you to change something in your human life. How she rules the roost! Stories can be serious or humorous\, or both. It is a story that opens the heart and rekindles the spirit. It is a simple piece that touches our readers and helps them discover basic principles they can use in their own lives. These stories are personal and often filled with emotion and drama. They are filled with vivid images created by using the five senses. In some stories\, the readers feel that they are actually in the scene with the people. \nChicken Soup for the Soul stories are written in the first person and have a beginning\, middle and an end. The stories often close with a punch\, creating emotion\, rather than simply talking about it. Chicken Soup for the Soul stories have heart\, but also something extra—an element that makes us all feel more hopeful\, more connected\, more thankful\, more passionate and better about life in general. A good story causes tears\, laughter\, goose bumps or any combination of these. \nThe most powerful stories are about people extending themselves\, or performing an act of love\, service or courage for another person. \nGuidelines for a Chicken Soup for the Soul story\n\nTell an exciting\, heartwarming or funny story about something that has happened to you or someone you know. Your story should be written in the first person and should be about yourself or someone close to you.\nTell your story in a way that will make the reader cry\, laugh\, get goose bumps or say “Wow!”\nThe story should start “in the action” and draw in the reader. Do not start your story with an introduction about what you are going to say\, or end with a concluding paragraph about what you just said.\nDon’t be afraid to speak from the heart. Many people tell personal stories for the first time in our books\, and they find it to be a cathartic and productive experience. We do let you use a pen name for your story if you do not want to use your real name.\nDon’t try fancy moves with tenses. Writing in the present tense about something that happened in the past rarely works.\nKeep your story to 1200 words or less. Tighten\, tighten\, tighten!\nYour story must be true. No fiction\, no creative writing.\n\nWhat a Chicken Soup for the Soul story IS NOT:\n\nA sermon\, an essay or eulogy.\nAn “as told to” story written by you for someone else. If you ghost-write a story for someone\, we thank you for helping that person share his or her story. That person’s name will be listed as the author and he or she can acknowledge your help in the bio section.\nA term paper\, thesis\, letter or journal entry.\nAbout politics or controversial issues.\nA biography or testimonial.\nA journalistic article about a third party that reads like a newspaper article.\n\nGuidelines for a Chicken Soup for the Soul poem\n\nWe love poems that tell a story. A Chicken Soup for the Soul poem does the same job as a story. The reader goes away having learned your story\, just through poetry instead of prose.\nWe do not publish poems that do not tell a story.\nWe also do not publish poems that seem overly focused on rhyming and read more like greeting cards.

As it represents karma\, tests of life\, and spirituality… in grappling with the abstract\, we seek something tangible. \nDivination is about correlation; how wisdom arises from pairing and juxtaposition. We peer into relationality and conjure meaning. The cosmos aids in this understanding\, letting pieces fall into alignment\, be it chaotic or planned. What follows the laws of nature and what refuses to? How do we read logic from the randomness of the universe? We love the enthusiasm but tend to lose track of your work due to our high volume of emails! \nWe do not accept AI generated work of any kind. Period. Attempting to submit AI work will be an automatic rejection. The same goes for any kind of prejudice. We have a zero tolerance policy. \nPoetry: No more than five poems or ten pages. DESCRIPTION:William Burroughs hypothesized that language is a virus from outer space. Agree or disagree\, language does inhabit us just as we inhabit it. Language represents—and is—imagination in action. It dances in an everyday state of evolution and is the shared invention of us all\, whether we love\, loathe\, or have never heard of each other. We treat words with great care or with abandon. We are reckless with language\, sloppy\, incoherent\, liars. But words are truths in themselves\, precious\, each one special\, incandescent. No matter whether we realize what daily miracles they are\, they will always survive us\, gifts we pass down the generations. We Love All We Voices celebrates the languages of poetry\, fiction\, essays\, in all their glory\, with works by some of our most pioneering writers. \nConjunctions has always been language-centric. In that spirit we are also featuring a special portfolio edited by Trinidadian-American novelist Robert Antoni\, in which vernacular writing is explored as an agent of its own authenticity—open\, malleable\, subversive\, aggressively multi\, overtly political\, plenty rude\, and alive. Nowhere have English-based vernaculars proliferated so vociferously as in the Western Hemisphere’s first melting pot\, the Caribbean. Writings from this far-flung diaspora\, as much or more than any other\, make melody central to their meaning. Glossaries and footnotes are out; this cognitive and acoustic work must be accomplished in context. Perhaps most challenging of all\, until fairly recently\, there were few models to follow. Email editors@friendsjournal.org\n\nLearn more general information at Friendsjournal.org/submissions. \nOur March 2025 issue will look at Neurodiversity. We know this is a very broad topic. Wikipedia defines it as recognizing “the diversity within sensory processing\, motor abilities\, social comfort\, cognition\, and focus as neurobiological differences.” Neurodiversity is typically likened to a spectrum and for good reason\, as everyone’s experience is unique. \nFirst and foremost\, we want to hear from neurodiverse Friends. If you’re new to Quakers\, what has drawn you in? Is there something about Quaker worship that works especially well for you? What has been your experience of Quaker process and business meeting and culture? We also want to know what doesn’t work. We realize that experiences can be very different person-to-person and meeting-to-meeting\, but are there specific adaptations that meetings could consider to better accommodate the needs of neurodiverse visitors? \nWe’re also curious about what Friends meetings and churches have already done to make themselves more accessible. This could be anything from setting clear expectations in worship to adapting First-day school programs to allow for more movement and fidgeting. What do families with neurodiverse members need from their Quaker meeting? \nFriends schools are another interesting case. There are a handful of Friends schools whose missions are to support learning differences (others have cited religious exemptions to refuse accommodations\, alas). For those who do serve neurodiverse students\, we’d like to hear how Quaker educational techniques have been adapted for that work.
