SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Fourth River. Theme: For the Birds
DESCRIPTION:FOR THE BIRDS\nIf there is one animal that has consistently shown up in the submissions to The Fourth River\, for at least the last ten years\, it would be the feathered\, winged ones that rule the skies. \nBirds. \nIn fact\, there have been so many birds bursting from poems\, stories and essays that it has become a bit of an inside joke and also a teaching opportunity for graduate student editors engaging with the genre we call Nature Writing in the 21st century. Okay\, birds\, I tell them. But how are these birds special? If we can expect them to arrive in flocks\, how can we spot the ones that stand out? \nOkay\, birds\, we say. \nBut they had better surprise us! \n2025 marks 20 years of publication for The Fourth River and in this anniversary year\, instead of looking at them slightly askance\, we’ve decided we want to embrace them! \nSo\, bring us your birds! Your bevies and coveys\, your murders and unkindnesses\, your nests. Your bowers and roosts\, your migration routes. Your claws and plumage\, hollow bones and elliptical wings. Bring us swoop and sail and alight and soar. \nBring us eggs. \nBring pet birds flying around your living room and owls hunting mice under the moon. Bring literature and myth and extinction. Bring ravens and mockingbirds. Griffin and Harpy and Phoenix and Thoth. Archaeopteryx. Bring Quetzalcoatlus. Dodo. Great Auk. \nBring us delicate hummingbirds\, sure. But also those small brown scrappy ones\, nondescript and muscled out by the Cardinal-bullies at the feeder outside your window. Bring us pigeon and chicken and the un-lovely buzzard. Remind us that cassowaries can’t\, but turkeys sure can\, fly. \nLet us hear their chirps and screeches. \nLet us hear them sing. \nFor our fall\, 2025 digital issue\, we welcome your poems\, essays and stories about birds. \nPlease send 3-5 poems or up to 4\,000 words of prose at a time. \n— \nWe welcome submissions of poetry\, fiction and creative nonfiction that explore the relationship between humans and their environments\, both natural and built\, urban\, rural or wild. We are looking for writing that is richly situated at the confluence of place\, space and identity—or that reflects upon or makes use of landscape and place in new ways. \nFor all our submissions\, themed or otherwise\, we welcome especially work by writers who are part of marginalized groups: immigrant and indigenous writers; writers of color; women\, non-binary\, LGBQA and trans writers; writers with disabilities both visible and invisible. Send us your best work!

SUMMARY:F - Hearth Stories' Springtime Fair Anthology Seeking Stories Surrounding: Craft\, Recipe\, or Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Submissions: Springtime Fair\n\n\nAbout the Anthology\nWelcome to the Hearth Stories Springtime Fair! In this anthology we will be featuring stories that center around a craft\, recipe\, or ritual (see below for specifics). In addition to the story\, each author will provide a set of instructions to make/enact the craft\, recipe\, or ritual that was featured in their story. The idea is that this will let readers enjoy a great story while also learning something and engaging with the story in an interesting way. The story and the instructions should be firmly related (not just a random thing to make\, paired with a random story). \nSo\, what are we talking about when we talk about crafts\, recipes\, and rituals? Here are some examples\, but you are by no means limited to these: \n\nCrafts\nCrochet\, Knitting\, Sewing\, Weaving\, Macrame\nBasketry\nWoodworking\nSmithing\nJewelry Making\nRecipes (Vegan Only)\nBaking (bread\, pastry\, etc)\nCooking (soups\, sides\, mains)\nRemedies\, Medicines\, Tinctures\nRituals\nMagic or Spellcraft\nMeditation\nYoga\, Qi-Gong\, Tai-Chi\, etc.\nCeremonies\n\nWhen using the above suggestions keep in mind that you can be very specific—a specific knitting pattern\, for example—or you can be fairly general—an introduction to knitting\, for example. Either is fine. For the most part we are looking for something fairly brief\, but still actionable. In most cases the instructions should be shorter than the story. The submitting author needs to have the rights to use the instructions (you cannot just grab a pattern for something off the internet and call it yours without legal risk; the contract has a section where you will affirm you have the right to license the work you are submitting for publication). \n\n\nWhat to send\nWe are looking for a story that is accompanied by some form of tutorial\, lesson\, pattern\, recipe\, etc. (later referred to as your instructional section) that is relevant to the theme and relates to the specific story you are submitting. The expectation is that if you send\, for example\, a recipe… that recipe should have been used by characters in the story. Ideally\, it would be a/the major focus of the story. \n\nWritten Content To Send\nThe story itself\, which must feature a major element or plot relating to the theme\nAn instructional that is on theme and goes with your specific story. This should allow a reader to create/enact the thing featured in your story if the steps are followed\nA third person bio\nWord Count Range\n1\,000–5\,000 words\nWord count includes your instructional section\nGenre(s)\n\nhttps://hearthstories.org/submissions-springtime-fair.htmlAll generes should take place in largely pre/non-industrial settings\n\nFantasy\nLiterary Fiction\nRomance\nHistorical Fiction or Alternate History\nSubmission Types\nReprints are acceptable\, but you will need to add/include the instructional section\nTranslations will not be accepted\nSimulateneous submissions are great (so long as the submission to us includes the instructional section)\nMultiple submissions will not be accepted unless specifically requested by the publisher via e-mail\nAI/LLM/Generative-Software aided/written material will not be accepted (and the contract will have a stipulation stating as much)\nEnglish\, or a version of English that would be at least semi-comprehensible to modern English speakers (Middle English\, strongly-dialectical English\, a made up form of English unique to your story/world)\, should be the written language of all submitted content\n\nThings/styles we are looking for\n\nCozy\, sweet\, cute\, kind\, hopeful\, and romantic stories (especially\, but not limited to\, queer romance)\nRural/pastoral life\, village fairs/festivals\, herb gathering\, traditional crafts (sewing\, weaving\, spinning)\, and song (include lyrics or sheetmusic if you have them)\nWorks that take place in nature\, wooded spaces\, mountains\, and fields\, stories that feel like spring (or\, really\, involve or evoke any seasons in a meaningful way)\nStories involving hermits\, issolated places\, cottages\, or wandering in the woods\nMedievalism\, peasant life\, arthurian-style settings and stories (without the war and combat)\, chivalry\nWitches\, paganism\, magic\n\nMore generally\, we are wanting the small adventures of daily life rather than adventures with swords\, conflict\, etc. \nNote: We are a vegan magazine. We will not generally publish mentions of leather/animal-products\, meat/animal consumption\, etc. and will request that they be changed to a vegan alternative during the edit process (if a story is accepted with these things present). This includes the instructional section of your submission. If you have questions about what is or is not deemed acceptible under this policy\, please reach out and ask. There are situations in which this pseudo-rule can bend a bit\, but they are difficult to enumerate. \n\n\nWhat not to send\nPlease review the what to send section\, as it is a better guiding light for what we are looking for than a list of negatives. However\, there are a few specific things we do not want: \n\nWorks featuring violence\, threat of violence\, war\, military themes\, weapons\, killing\, or combat\nModern-ish technology. If your story has a cell phone\, car\, spaceship\, electricity\, etc. it will be an automatic pass from us\nDragons and unicorns are very very hard sells for us\, especially as point of view characters. Please do not send them\, unless the story just features them as a minor background element\nNon-vegan content (leather\, eating animals\, etc). If you are unsure about whether something is vegan or not\, go ahead and submit\, but know that we may request things be removed or changed during editing if the story is accepted\n\n\n\nPay scale\nFor our anthologies we offer double our regular rate. 2¢ per word will be paid out for accepted stories. The instructional section counts toward the word count\, but should not be intentionally padded (please\, we do not charge for the magazine and make no profit from it whatsoever). We would love to be able to offer more\, but we are not bringing in any money to offset the cost and the given amounts are what we\, as individuals\, can bear financially to support authors while continuing to release the magazine. \nReprints are paid at half the rate of 1st publication stories. As such\, reprints will be paid out at 1¢ per word. \n\n\nHow to format your submission\nWe do not accept hard-copy manuscripts. As such\, you will be sending a digital file. Here are our preferences in that regard: \n\nPlease include\, at a minimum\, your e-mail address and the word count at the top of the manuscript\nSend the file as: rtf\, doc\, docx\, odt\, or md\nUse any font and font size you like (we will adjust to our preferences anyway)\nPlease include the story and the instructional section in a single document. The 3rd person bio should go in your submission e-mail (but we won’t disqualify you if it accidentally ends up at the end or beginning of your document as well).\n\n\n\nWhere to send\nWrite to us at hearthstories@protonmail.com with the following: \n\nThe subject will follow this format (do not include the quotes and brackets\, they are solely there to help define the format): “HS Anthology Submission: [Story Name] [Word Count]”\nThe file\, formatted as described above\, will be attached to the e-mail (we do not accept links to files)\nThe e-mail body will include\, at a minimum\, the author’s name and a short\, 3rd person\, author bio\nThe e-mail body will not include a synopsis of the story being submitted\nThe e-mail body will not have the story or the instructional pasted into it\n\nFailure to submit in the above format will result in your story being passed on unread. We regret having to institute a format like this\, but to combat a massive amount of spam we have received we want to know that folks at least took the time to look at these submission guidelines. If you have any trouble or you e-mailed and forgot to follow one of these items: reach out and let us know. We’re happy to work with you. Mostly we just want people to have read the guidelines. We value your time and want to read your work and appreciate you taking the time to submit to Hearth Stories: Spring Fair. \n\n\nWhat next?\nWe will e-mail you to confirm that we have received your piece. We will also be in touch by e-mail to let you know if we are passing on your piece\, moving your piece to a further reading round\, or interested in accepting your piece for publicaion. Unfortunately\, we will no longer be maintaining a checkable reading queue. If you do not get an e-mail confirmation that we received your story within two weeks of sending: please reach out and check with us. \nWe do ask that you notify us if you have placed your submission elsewhere under a contract that would prevent it from being featured in Hearth Stories. In such a case\, please include the word “ANTHOLOGY WITHDRAWN” in the subject line. \nIf your submission is deemed a good fit\, an offer e-mail will be sent out. Then suggested edits may be worked through\, contract will be signed\, and payments will be sent. Nice and simple. Then\, at the appointed time\, the issue/anthology containing your work will be released. Your name (as author of the work)\, the story\, a copyright notice assigned to you (as author of the given work) will all be included in the issue.

Send paper submissions to: \nProfessor Robert Dean Johnson / Department of English / Eastern Kentucky University / 521 Lancaster Ave / Richmond\, KY 40475. \nBy submitting via mail\, the piece must not be simultaneously submitted. Additionally\, by submitting via mail the author is agreeing that if we choose to publish\, they are agreeing to let us publish the piece “as-is” or with reasonable copy edits (not content or style) and granting us standard\, First North American Serial Rights. Because the deadline for printing will be tight\, we need them to agree to these things upfront because there will be no time to correspond with an author via email as we normally would. \nPlease convey our genre guidelines if you are passing along this information.  \nIf published\, for compensation\, they will receive a copy of the issue. Please let us know which address they would want it sent to. \n

SUMMARY:PFN - époque press é-zine Seeking Submissions about: Hunger
DESCRIPTION:We are now open for submissions to our next é-zine edition on the theme Hunger. \nHunger is about the body’s need for food and sustenance\, the agonizing and gnawing feeling when food is denied or the extreme impact experienced when starvation sets in. It is about what is consumed\, how things are consumed and whether the sense of satisfaction derived from satiating hunger can give way to addiction and greed. Hunger is also about a sense of yearning\, a strong wish or desire to achieve or want something. It can be a positive feeling\, something that is praised and valued in an individual\, but it is also something that can become all consuming\, a hunger which takes precedence over everything else. \nWhat does Hunger mean to you? \nWe are open for submissions of poetry\, short stories and short essays. Please submit your work in an attachment to the email as a MS Word Document. Please accompany your submission with a short bio of no more than 100 words telling us a little bit about yourself\, the motivation behind your work and how it aligns to the theme. This can be attached as a separate MS Word Document or within the text of the email. Please email submissions@epoquepress.com and in the subject header state ‘ezine submission’\, name of theme and your name.

SUMMARY:PFN - After Happy Hour Contest. Theme: Food
DESCRIPTION:We’re putting together a feast of words for our 4th contest issue. For this call\, we’re looking for stories\, essays\, and poems that feature food. That could be as a central image\, an aspect of the plot (cooking it\, eating it\, growing it\, etc.)\, a defining trait of the characters (cooks\, servers\, baking show contestants\, etc.)\, or a key detail of the setting (restaurant\, farm\, canning factory\, etc.). However it’s used\, food should feel necessary for and integrated into the work–we’re looking for more than just a passing mention of breakfast on the character’s way out the door. \nFood isn’t just limited to Earth/human fare\, either. Anything that a being consumes for sustenance counts as “food” for the purposes of this theme: predators hunting prey\, plant-based lifeforms that “eat” sunlight\, synthetic protein pastes\, or any other means of gaining nutrients a lifeform could use. Beverages can also count\, though we’re not interested in the typical “bunch of people in a bar” stories (unless you’re doing something very new\, cool\, and different with it). \nThe contest will be judged by the After Happy Hour editors. We read submissions anonymously\, so please remove your name and other identifying information from your file before sending it.\n \n\n\nPoetry: Send up to 3 individual poems\, no line or word limits. \nFiction: Send a single short story or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We have no upper word limits\, and aren’t opposed to publishing stories upwards of 5\,000 words that justify their real estate. \nCreative non-fiction: Send a single short work or up to 3 flash or micro pieces (fewer than 1\,000 words each) in a single document. We are specifically looking for creative non-fiction for this issue\, not scholarly essays about literary genres or subgenres (though if you’re using the tropes of scholarly essays within the context of a narrative or lyric piece\, that we do want to see). \nSuites: Send up to 5 linked works that will be considered as a set. Individual works within a suite can be poems or flash or micro-length prose (under 1\,000 words each). \nHybrid/Cross-Genre: Yes\, please. Follow whichever of the above guidelines makes the most sense. \nPrize Info: \nThe winners and honorable mentions for this contest will receive a percentage of the total entry fees paid (including purchases of After Happy Hour print issues): \n·         Up to 3 “ranked winners” will split 30%. \n·         Up to 3 honorable mentions will split 15% \nAll submitted works will also be considered for publication in the issue. If we publish your work and you don’t win a prize\, you’ll be paid at the standard contributor rate ($2.50 per printed page\, with a minimum of $15 and maximum of $50). \nHow much will I win\, though? \nIn the first 3 years\, the prize ranged between $103-$320 for winners\, and from $56-$160 for honorable mentions. We’ll post periodic updates on the Submittable page as the reading period moves along so you can get a sense for what you stand to win. \n\nGENERAL GUIDELINES\n\n\nPlease include a brief (100 word max) 3rd-person bio in your cover letter.\nTo limit editor and reader bias\, we read all submissions anonymously. To this end\, we ask submitters to remove their name and contact information from the document itself.\nWe are not opposed to sex\, violence\, or profanity when they are necessary to the story—we’re fans of all three\, in fact. Having said that\, we will not accept any work that contains hateful or discriminatory content\, including racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, and transphobia. Gratuitous sex and violence will probably get you rejected\, too.\nUse standard manuscript format (12-point Serif font\, standard margins and spacing). It’s not like we’ll reject you for a bad font (probably) but it makes it easier to read\, and that makes us happy. The exception is poetry that uses non-standard formatting for stylistic reasons. Prose writers have no excuse.\nWe accept submissions only through Submittable. If the Submittable platform presents an accessibility barrier\, please email us at AfterHappyHour@gmail.com and we’ll find a workaround.\nWe accept and encourage simultaneous submissions. All we ask is that you be a good literary citizen and withdraw your submission through Submittable if it’s accepted elsewhere (if you’re withdrawing part of a submission\, you can send us an e-mail). It is also expected that you’ll withdraw your submission from consideration by other journals if After Happy Hour accepts it.\nPlease send only one submission per category at a time. We’ll happily consider submissions in multiple categories from the same author (e.g. a poem and a story).\nIf you work in mixed genres (hybrid poetry/fiction\, illustrated stories\, etc.) submit the work in the category that seems to fit the best\, and we’ll figure it out.\nOur response time is generally less than 6 weeks\, but we are humans (mostly) and have been known to fall behind. If you haven’t heard from us in 3 months or more\, you can send an e-mail and give us a nudge. You can also check on the status of your submission at any time by logging into your Submittable account.\nAccepted submissions may be edited for grammar. All changes are sent to the author for approval before publication.\nWe acquire first publishing rights and electronic archive rights. All rights revert to the author following the work’s publication in After Happy Hour you can re-publish and anthologize your work at will. Content can be removed from the website on request\, but cannot be removed from the the issue in which it was published.

SUMMARY:PN - Bleating Thing Magazine Seeking Submissions on: Gaudy Infinitesimal
DESCRIPTION:SUBMISSIONS ARE\nOPEN\nfor ISSUE 03:\nGAUDY INFINITESIMAL\n\nFOR THIS ISSUE\,\nwe are seeking work that luxuriates in petite miracles;\ncatalogues of tiny happinesses; the captured essence of little treats. \nwe’re seeking work that celebrates the small things\nworth living for. \n\n\ncontent\nguidelines\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBleating Thing is a magazine of poetry\, essays\, and printable hybrid work. At this time\, we do not publish fiction.\nWhile we prefer essays to memoir/CNF\, we recognize that these lines often blur. If you feel your piece has a strong perspective or theme that emerges in a dialectic way\, you may submit in the essay category with the understanding that we will consider it as such.\nPlease read our “About” page and at least one issue of the magazine prior to submitting work.\nWe favor the visceral marginalia. While we understand this may (perhaps\, even frequently) include the grotesque\, we do not publish gratuitous depictions of sexual assault\, violence\, or self-harm.\nWe do not tolerate bigotry of any kind.\nWe do not accept previously published material\, unless the previous publication is out of print and no digital archive exists. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to NonBinary Review. Theme: Mistaken Identity
DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is currently open for submissions on the theme of MISTAKEN IDENTITY. \nHow often have you waved to a friend across a room\, only to realize the person you waved to isn’t who you thought they were? These benign little episodes of mistaken identity can be laughed off\, but there are so many times and so many ways mistaken identity can be humiliating\, criminal\, traumatic\, life-altering\, transforming. Whether you are the one who made the mistake or the one who is being mistaken for someone else\, there are so many ways it can happen\, and so many ways to respond. \nWe want your weird\, wonderful\, bizarre\, impossible stories of mistaken identity. We don’t want “I accidentally met the love of my life because I mistook them for my friend” stories. More like “I accidentally stopped the Earth from being blown to bits because I mistook the alien invaders for mosquitos and sprayed them with bug spray.” We want to be captivated by the unlikeliness of a story that probably could never really happen. \nIMPORTANT NOTICE\nZoetic Press does not accept AI generated content. If our editors judge that your content is AI-generated\, it will be declined. \nIf your work was accepted for Issue #37: False Memories or Issue #38: Rituals\, we’re sorry\, but we cannot accept your work at this time (see our general guidelines.) \nWe have different teams evaluating poetry\, and prose. If you submit to the wrong genre\, your submission will be declined. \nPoetry\nAll submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme and be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman\, or they will be rejected. Submitters may include up to THREE poems per submission\, but each must be a separate file. NonBinary Review pays a $10 flat fee for poetry. \nProse\nAll submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme\, and be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or they will be rejected. NonBinary Review  pays 1¢ per word for prose with a limit of 3000 words.

SUMMARY:PFN - Blood & Bourbon Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Ocean
DESCRIPTION:A drop in the ocean\n\n\nWith the year soon coming to a close\, we have decided to give our loyal followers a bit more time to write and submit pieces for the new issue. I think we all need a bit of time to take care of ourselves after a tumultuous\, fast-paced year that was 2024. \nIn a way\, this year has been much like the ocean: calm and welcoming one minute\, yet capricious and unpredictable the next. The ocean\, though\, is always trying to lure us back to its depth\, but we are careful not to overstay our welcome in this vast unknown. Are you tempted to discover what secrets the waters hold or do you feel safer with your feet planted in the sand on shore? Do you go to the harbour for loud parties with like-minded strangers or to find solace and peace? \n\nSubmissions\n\n\nBlood & Bourbon is here to showcase all things hard\, gritty\, and raw. That time you got in a bar fight\, that time you went to an S&M club\, that time you had an opinion that sparked a heated argument over a family dinner. We’re actively seeking submissions in the following categories: \n\nShort fiction or non-fiction\, 5000 words or less\nOpinion pieces or essays on any subjects\, 5000 words or less\nPoetry\, up to three pieces per submission\nBlack and white photography and illustrations.\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions and reprints. We provide author copies upon request with a small donation of $5. \nWe are now open for submissions until January 31\, 2025. The theme of the next issue is Ocean. \nWe’re interested in diverse voices and want to hear from you regardless of what you look like\, where you’re from\, what you believe\, who you like to fuck\, et cetera. \nSend your material to bandbsubmissions (AT) gmail.com. Your submission should be attached as a .doc\, .docx or .rtf file\, with your name\, address\, email address\, the story title (if applicable) and total word count at the top of the first page. Include a 50-word bio in the body of the email or in the Word doc. \nOur Process\nWe will send you an email at the end of the submission period\, letting you know if your work has been accepted. Please don’t expect to hear from us sooner\, but let us know if your work has been accepted anywhere else during this submission period. We accept about 30 submissions per issue. \nWe then assign one of our editors to work with you to polish your submission and apply our house style guide. Keep in mind that we are a Canadian publication\, so Canadian spelling will be applied to all work. Editing phase usually lasts about 2 months. \nOnce we receive all the final documents from our editors\, we’ll work on layout. You will have a chance to see and approve the print proof before the launch of the issue. Layout and proofreading phase takes about a week. \nWe will share the links to the issue with you\, so you can spread the word to your peers and followers. We currently publish on Amazon and Kobo\, in print and e-book format.

SUMMARY:PFN - After Happy Hour: A Journal of Literature and Art Seeking Reprints from now-defunct markets
DESCRIPTION:Even an excellent literary magazine doesn’t necessarily last forever. There are quite a few journals the After Happy Hour editors used to read (or were published in) that now no longer exist–and that’s a shame\, because they published great stuff that people should still be able to read. \nWe’d like to help fix that with a special online issue dedicated solely to work that was published in now-closed markets. What we specifically mean by that: \n\nFor print publications: They are no longer publishing new content in any format and past issues are no longer available for purchase directly from the publisher (or will be unavailable by May 2025\, for print journals that just announced their closure).\nFor online publications: Either a) the website is inactive\, or b) the journal has shown no signs of activity on their website and social media accounts for 3+ years\n\nAny creative work that was published in a journal that meets one of those qualifications is eligible for this call. This includes stories\, poems\, and personal essays\, along with hybrids and mixes of the above. We’re interested in works from any and all genres\, and especially in ones that blend\, blur\, or fall between genres. \nWe are only looking for reprints for this call. Unpublished work will be rejected unread. If you have unpublished pieces that fit our current contest theme (Food) you can submit them on that form. Otherwise\, please wait for our next unthemed open call\, which will open March 1st\, 2025. \nAll work selected for this issue will be paid a flat rate of $10 per piece. The reading period will be open concurrent with this year’s contest\, from November 1st\, 2024 through January 31st\, 2025. \nGeneral submission guidelines \nPoetry: no line or word limits. \nFiction: We have no hard word count limits\, though we are unlikely to publish something of novella length. \nCreative nonfiction: We are specifically looking for lyric or narrative nonfiction\, not scholarly essays (though if you’re using the tropes of scholarly essays within the context of a personal essay\, that we do want to see). \nSuites: Send up to 5 linked works that will be considered as a set. Individual works within a suite can be poems or flash or micro-length prose (under 1\,000 words each). \nHybrid/Cross-Genre: Yes\, please. Follow whichever of the above guidelines makes the most sense for your work. \nFor all submissions: \n\nPlease include a brief (100 words max) 3rd-person bio with your submission.\nTo limit editor bias\, we read all submissions anonymously. Please remove your name and contact information from the document (including the headers\, top of the first page\, under the title\, etc.) before submitting it.\nUse standard manuscript format (11- or 12-point font like Times New Roman\, double-space prose/single-space poetry\, etc.). We won’t reject you for weird spacing or a bad font (probably)\, but following this standard makes things easier to read\, and that makes the editors happy. Poets/experimental prose writers have more liberty here if the non-standard formatting is used for formal or stylistic reasons. Straightforward prose writers have no excuse.\nWe accept submissions only through Submittable. Submissions sent to our e-mail will be deleted unread.\nSimultaneous submissions are accepted\, just please withdraw your submission if it’s accepted somewhere that would prohibit After Happy Hour from publishing it (e.g. a market with a post-publication period of exclusivity).\nMultiple submissions are accepted.\nIf you need to withdraw a longer prose piece\, or an entire packet of poems or flash prose\, you can choose the “withdraw” option on Submittable. To withdraw a single poem or flash piece from a packet\, you can message us through Submittable or e-mail us (afterhappyhour [at] gmail [dot] com).\nAccepted submissions may be edited for grammar. All changes will be sent to the author for approval before publication.\nWe request one-time publication rights (we can publish your work once) and non-exclusive electronic archive rights (we can keep the issue with your work in it online in our back issue archives). The author always holds the copyright to their work and retains all other rights\, including the right to publish the piece elsewhere after its publication in After Happy Hour.

DESCRIPTION:This issue considers “Fashion” in all its forms used in literary writing to reveal character. Think of elements of fashion that are a filter for underlying human emotion and a lens into identity. The garments themselves can be used to tell a story as well…from denim to silk\, from to sunglasses and swimwear to military attire. Settings can include anything that exudes fashion to generate meaning from the elaborate styles on the runway to the hats worn in formal gatherings. Topics can include exploration of characters who are identified by their attire\, like in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or The Great Gatsby. Poems can explore the mysteries of what we wear. Essays can investigate the evolution of certain attire\, or the personal meaning a specific style might have for the author. Let’s make this issue colorful and full of new insight! \nPlease submit your original\, previously unpublished short fiction\, creative nonfiction\, or poetry. Select one genre per submission to this category. For fiction or nonfiction\, it can be any page length. For poetry a selection of 3-5 poems. In your cover letter please include a brief bio of one paragraph and a mailing address for contributor copies. \nThis category will close when the submissions cap of 200 is reached.

SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs Seeking Submissions on the Theme of Midnight
DESCRIPTION:GENERAL GUIDELINES \n\nWe are looking for serious writers with an appreciation for language and the craft of writing. We want fiction with memorable characters and realistic plots\, poetry that is fresh and original\, and nonfiction that is both thoughtful and entertaining.\nWe will accept only writing that has been proofread for spelling and grammar. Trust us on this one. We keep our virtual machete very sharp for people who are grammatically challenged\, and we are not afraid to use it.\nHaving said that\, as an international ‘zine\, we accept differences in spelling usages (e.g. British vs American English) and will publish whatever is considered correct in an author’s home country.\nWe are not interested in explicit sexual content\, gratuitous violence\, or repetitive swearing\, unless it is essential to the plot and not included solely for shock value.\nPlease do not send us any of the following: poetry that sounds like it ought to be on a Hallmark card\, poetry you copied from a Hallmark card\, how-to articles\, first drafts of anything\, fanfiction\, anything full of sentimentality\, or religious and/or political propaganda disguised as fiction.\nThis ought to be obvious\, but only send us your own work\, humans. If you send us anything plagiarized or written by a robot\, remember we have a machete.\nWe do not accept previously published work. This includes not only formal publications in print and online journals\, but any pieces you may have posted to a blog\, personal website\, etc. If it’s already available to the public in some form\, we do not accept it.\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted by another journal.\nAs above\, we do not consider or accept submissions outside the specified submission period.\nWe reserve the right to make minor editorial changes without consultation\, where there are unintentional errors or inconsistencies in punctuation\, spelling or grammar. We will consult authors about anything more substantive.\nThe editors are all responsive to shameless flattery and to gifts of chocolate.\n\nPoetry Guidelines \nWe accept poetry of roughly 500 words or less\, although we are not terribly strict about this guideline.  We are rarely willing to be lenient with the theme when it comes to poetry\, and will do so only if the submission is very good. \nPlease note that we only accept three poems at any one time from a single author and\, for the most part\, publish only one poem from any one author per edition. \nFiction Guidelines \nWe accept fiction of roughly 5\,000 words or less related to the theme of the issue.   The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar/spelling\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \nPlease submit only one piece of fiction at a time\, and ensure stories are formatted as requested below. \nNonfiction Guidelines \nWe accept creative nonfiction of 3\,000 words or less. Halfway Down the Stairs is specifically looking for essays and memoir with a strong voice and a unique point of view. We publish well-written\, honest writing that inspires emotion. Humor is also appreciated. \nWe are not looking for stream of consciousness rants of a political or religious nature. Save those for your blog. We respond negatively to spelling and grammatical errors\, so please proofread your work closely if you wish to have it seriously considered. \nPlease submit only one piece of nonfiction at a time. \nSUBMISSIONS PROCESS\n \n\nPlease send all writing submissions to halfway . stairs @ gmail . com.\nDO NOT send your work as an attachment. (More details on why under point 5 below.)\nYour subject line should look like this: submission\, genre\, and title of your piece.  (Example: “Submission\, Fiction\, Monsoon Nights.”)  If you are submitting multiple poems\, state the number of poetry submissions instead of the title of the piece. (Example:  “Submission\, Three Poems by William C. Fredrikson.”) Please do not submit multiple genres in a single e-mail; if you would like to submit poetry and fiction\, send us two separate e-mails.\nWithin the body of your e-mail\, give us the following information: the title(s) of your submission(s)\, the name under which you wish to be published\, your e-mail address\, if the piece you are submitting has ever been published elsewhere\, if the piece you are submitting is a simultaneous submission\, and a brief introduction written in the 3rd person point of view.  If you are submitting multiple poems\, include these statements at the beginning of your e-mail\, and follow it with the actual poems. Example:\n\nThree Poems \nby William C. Fredrikson. \ncrazywillie57@gmail.com. \nNo\, the submitted poems have never published elsewhere. \nMonsoon Nights is not a simultaneous submission.  Elsewhere and Lady Luck are both simultaneous submissions.William C. Fredrikson teaches grade seven social studies in British Columbia.   His students think he looks exactly like Jack Nicholson.  In his spare time\, William enjoys playing the guitar\, reading Hemingway\, studying World War II history\, and making fun of reality television. \n\nIf we do choose to publish your piece\, we will also publish your biography. Your e-mail address is confidential\, and we will never publish it or give it out.\nAfter your introduction\, please post your piece within the body of your e-mail.  Please do not send your work as an attachment.  Please single space your work\, double spacing between paragraphs.  Please do not indent your paragraphs.\nProvide a content warning if it’s warranted: Let us know upfront if there is some kind of explicit content in your submission which we should be warned about in advance. We’ll leave this up to your discretion\, but examples could include abuse\, neglect\, self harm\, or violence.\nOptional: Let us know how you found us.  We’re curious as to where our readers and writers are coming from.\nOptional: Let us know if there’s a kind of image you visualize with your piece\, or even if you have an image you would like us to use if it is published (guidelines below). We reserve the right to choose alternatives – but we are happy to consider your suggestions.\n\nWe aim to respond to all submissions within 4-8 weeks of receipt\, and you will never wait more than three months for a response.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Cordite Poetry Review. Theme: Remember
DESCRIPTION:How is memory assailed by states\, by time\, by the formation of institutional practices of commemoration? \nAlessandro Portelli once wrote that oral testimonies ‘are not always fully reliable … Rather than being a weakness\, this is however\, their strength: errors\, inventions\, and myths lead us through and beyond facts to their meaning’. \nWhat are the bigger truths beyond facticity and how is the present enriched and unsettled by what we REMEMBER? \nSubmissions\n\nSubmission to Cordite 116: REMEMBER\, with poetry guest-edited by Micaela Sahhar and Anne-Marie Te Whiu\, closes 11.59pm Melbourne time on Sunday\, 2 February 2025. \n*Submissions for Cordite Scholarly are always accepted. \nSubmissions of poetry in translation can be sent to our Translations Editor at any time: alice [@] cordite.org.au. \nThe following conditions apply to all poetry submissions: \n\nWe will only read submissions sent during our official submission periods.\nCordite maintains a hybrid submissions policy. This means that the guest editor may invite five (5) Australian and five (5) overseas authors directly to submit to the issue. In addition\, the guest-editor will anonymously select an additional 30-35 works from Australian authors and use their discretion to select further overseas works. For each issue\, the guest editor does not know the identities of the online contributors (via Submittable) until after the final selections have been made.\nSimultaneous submissions? Sure. Just inform us or withdraw if the work is accepted elsewhere.\nPlease place up to three (3) poems in one (1) Word or RTF document (unless specifically noted otherwise for special issues)\, with no identifying details in the document itself.\nWe are not able to offer feedback on individual poems.\nSubmissions will only be accepted via Submittable …\nSubmissions may need to be developed to adhere to our Guide for Indigenous Editing and Writing.\n\n

SUMMARY:F - Stone's Throw Submissions Theme for March: In Like a Lamb; Out Like a Lion
DESCRIPTION:March is in like a lion and out like a lamb\, but this month at Stone’s Throw\, we want to reverse it. Give us meek characters who find their fire by the end of the story. What happens when repression gives way to hedonism and rage? Or maybe your protagonist was already a secret badass\, and just needed that nudge to show their true stripes? Maybe they go too far\, and have to make sense of what they’ve done when they come back to their senses? Keep it within the usual RHP boundaries. \nStone’s Throw is the monthly online companion to Rock and a Hard Place Magazine\, delivering shorter\, sharper content on a regular basis in an electronic medium\, before collecting all 12 stories for an annual print anthology. Each month\, writers will be given a submission prompt\, and the best of the best\, by our estimation\, will be posted here the following month. \nInterested in Submitting?\nStone’s Throw will open for submissions the first three days of every month\, from 12AM on the first through 12AM on the fourth (with some wiggle room here and there to account for the editors being human). We’re looking for all the same dark fiction\, crime\, and noir as our usual submissions\, but with a target length between 1\,000 and 2\,000 words\, and aligned with the monthly submissions prompt (see below). We’ll read through each story\, choose the one story that shines brightest\, and publish it online the following month\, paying $25 per accepted story. \nAfter a year\, we’ll collect all twelve stories into a Stone’s Throw Annual Anthology\, to be published alongside our other print issues. \nPLEASE NOTE — If you have been accepted within the calendar year for Stone’s Throw\, you are ineligible to submit again during that same calendar year. However\, we look forward to reading your submissions during our regular RHP Magazine open calls!

SUMMARY:PFN - Hedge Apple: The literary magazine of Hagerstown Community College Seeking Submissions on the Theme of: Labyrinth
DESCRIPTION:We are open for general submissions and “Labyrinth” theme submissions until February 15th\, 2025. \n\n\n\nSubmission Guidelines: \n\nWho can submit: We love to see work from Hagerstown Community College students\, staff\, faculty\, alumni\, and community members\, but we also love showcasing work from authors and artists around the world. In other words\, if you are reading this\, we are interested in seeing your work!\n\n\nPayment: Contributors will receive a complimentary print copy of their work if it is published in print. With deep apologies to our international contributors\, we are unable to mail copies outside of the United States at this time.\n\n\nNo cover letter is necessary\, although you are welcome to send us a few sentences of artist/author bio if you want to. If your piece is accepted\, we will ask for a bio later.\n\n\nART SUBMISSIONS: Files (photos\, 2D art\, photos of 3D art\, digital art) should be clear\, professional JPEG\, PNG\, or TIFF files. By sending us your work\, you grant us permission to publish it both online and in print\, but you retain rights to publish or show it anywhere else that you wish.\n\n\nFICTION/POETRY SUBMISSIONS: Please stay under 2000 words. Most pieces we publish are under 1000 words.\n\n\nBy submitting\, you are agreeing to light editing that does not change the meaning or style. If your work is accepted for publication\, you will receive a galley of your submission and be given a chance to review edits and then respond with either corrections or approval. However\, nonresponse will be considered approval of minor editing changes.\n\n\nBy sending your work to be considered for publication in our magazine\, you are granting us North American serial rights\, which means that we will publish the work online and in print\, and then the copyright will return to you. If the work is republished\, we ask that the Hedge Apple be credited.\n\n\nWe do accept simultaneous submissions but not previously published pieces of poetry or fiction; please be courteous and withdraw your story/poem from consideration upon acceptance at another venue.\n\nWHAT WE LIKE: \nAt the Hedge Apple\, we believe that literature and artwork are essential parts of humanity. These powerful channels can offer us hope and healing\, bring us together\, and give voice to the marginalized. They aren’t highbrow pursuits reserved only for intellectuals—literature and art are for everyone. Fresh voices are essential\, and we love fledgling artists. We are passionate about helping you find your niche\, whether it’s through our feedback or the resources provided on our website. Yes\, we want to hear from you veteran crafters too\, so please send us your work as well. We want to hear what you have to say. \nWe are looking for mixed media submissions (prose\, poetry\, art\, photography\, and videos) of all genres. We are especially drawn to pieces that showcase vulnerability and draw from real life experiences. That does not mean we don’t enjoy comedic takes on life\, fantasy epics\, and unconventional pieces. We like to uphold the unique\, showcase the weird\, and embrace the uncomfortable.
