SUMMARY:F - The Upper New Review Short Story Contest. Theme: A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in our 2024 Short Story Contest! \nThis is a short story fiction writing contest. \nThe short story contest is open to any English language writer anywhere on Earth\, aged 13 years or older. \nWe are open to receiving submissions of short stories originally written in a language other than English\, that have since been translated to English.  If this is the case\, the original non-English manuscript must be available for review upon request. \nThe Theme: Sense of Place \nThe theme for this short story contest is A Sense of Place. \nWe don’t want to provide too much structure to our theme.  We hope contest entrants will interpret this theme as they see fit\, expressing a keen sense of place within 3000 to 10000 words of fictional narrative. \nHowever: Our simple definition for sense of place is: figuring out the reality of where you are\, and how you perceive that reality\, and what your perception of that reality means to you. \nSubmissions \nWe’ll be using our Submittable platform to accept submissions for the short story contest. \nNo other forms of submission will be accepted. \nPrizes and Awards \nThe contest winner will receive a $200 cash prize. \nSeveral honorable mentions may be awarded to additional short story submissions. \nAdditionally\, three thematic prizes may be awarded in this short story contest\, depending on the quality of submissions\, at the discretion of The Upper New Review publisher.  These prizes include: \n\nDana Meadows Award – for demonstrated systems wisdom\nFritjof Capra Award – for demonstrated understanding of the hidden connections of the web of life\nGary Snyder Award – for demonstrated understanding of bioregionalism\n\nAll winners (the contest winner\, any honorable mentions\, and any thematic prize winners) will be published in The Upper New Review. \nRules and Guidelines \nThe entry fee to submit a single manuscript to the short story contest is $15. \nAll short stories entered into the contest will also be considered for publication in The Upper New Review\, regardless of the outcome of this contest. \nUploaded short story manuscripts should be properly formatted.  At a minimum\, manuscripts should be double-spaced\, using at least a 12-point serif font.  Please also include page numbers. \nSeveral standard file formats are acceptable for uploaded manuscripts.  PDF is preferred\, but not required. \nManuscripts do not need to be blinded for this contest.  This means that identifying information of the author should be included in the manuscript – this information does not need to be removed. \nThe minimum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 3\,000 words. \nThe maximum word count for short stories submitted to this contest is 10\,000 words. \nAuthors may submit up to four total short stories for this contest.  Each short story entered requires a separate submission and $15 entry fee.  Additional submissions from a single author beyond the maximum allowed of four submissions will be automatically rejected. \nThe manuscript submission review process commences upon receipt of submission. \nManuscripts submitted early in the contest submission window may be accepted for publication before the end of the contest deadline.  Status for publication does not have any effect on the contest awards outcome. \nAll cash prizes may be awarded contingent upon the volume of submissions to the contest. Awards are subject to change based on these submission volumes\, including the potential for increase in awards. \nAll contest submissions are final.  The Upper New does not offer refunds for submissions\, except upon written request under extenuating circumstances. \nAdditional online events and curated publications may be announced for contest entries and winners\, contingent upon the number and quality of submissions to the contest.

Whether your focus is on tomorrow or 2099\, we want to see you take on the unknown. Sculpt a futuristic-looking meal\, write a poem about where you’ll be in 20 years\, or create a comic where retrofuturist aesthetics become chic. Experimental and abstract submissions are welcome. We are especially excited to receive writers’ forays into science and speculative fiction.\n\n\n-We primarily conduct submissions through our Google Form. Email submissions are only allowed for multipage comics. \n-We don’t consider artist bios alongside works and they will be ignored if included in a document. \n-Please submit each work separately. \n-Written work can be original prose\, poetry\, prosetry\, flash\, essays\, missives\, and more. It can be fiction or creative nonfiction. Please no articles\, critical essays\, reviews\, or translations of another person’s work. SUMMARY:PF - Meow Meow Pow Pow Seeking Submissions. Theme: Happy Phantom
DESCRIPTION:[Theme: Happy Phantom]   \nWhat pleasant ghosts have stopped to visit you recently? What red-haired anthems do you play on repeat while smiling specters tap at the window? A favorite album spins on repeat in the background shaking the walls like an earthquake. Shadows you consider friends peek out behind corners. We’re open for Happy Phantom submissions\, inspired by the artist and album that got us through some hard times; and the delight that comes with considering some songs visitors from the past. \nWe love surprising interpretations of our themes; we’re less keen on literal interpretations. That being said\, if we receive a piece that isn’t–in some way–reflective of the theme\, we’ll gnash our teeth and shake our fists at the heavens and then send you a wimpy rejection letter. Don’t make us do that–we hate that. \nWe love unpublished writers just as much as we love published writers (sometimes even more so). MMPP is more likely to publish work that is provocative and invigorating rather than overly complicated pieces of pomposity. Excite us with your garden-fresh flash and titillate us with your gutsy poems. Let us home your vigorous words and create art to accompany them. And after we marry your wise wordery\, we’ll bring the lit to the great outdoors. Length of the work: our sweet spot is between 150 to 300 words. Anything over or under\, we’ll be less psyched on. Poems? Let’s try to keep it under 25 lines\, bbz\, and no more than 3 poems per submission. Please indicate whether this is prose or poetry in your title or cover letter. We accept re-prints so long as you own the rights. \nIf you are rejected\, please wait until the next theme to submit.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Woolf. Theme: Music
DESCRIPTION:Hear\, play or make it. Be stilled\, stunned\, changed\, warped\, saved\, ruined or reborn by it. Music is the prompt for Issue 6 – so send us your best!  Note that the use of others’ published song lyrics or music is not recommended for copyright reasons). Be sure to visit our website to get the lowdown on submission guidelines. We look forward to seeing your work! \n\n\n  \n\n\ncreative nonfiction <2500 words\nflash fiction <1000 words\nmicrofiction <100 words\, up to 3 pieces in one document\nprose poetry <300 words\nshort fiction <2500 words\nHow to submit\n\n\n\n\nSubmissions for Issue 6 (Music) are open through 25 March 2024. Be sure to check out Duotrope for the details (especially when it comes to the use of published song lyrics in your work). But first\, have a look at our basic submission guidelines below. \n\n\n\n\nThe important stuff  \n\nWe only accept original\, unpublished work. If your work has already appeared in The Woolf\, please wait two issues before submitting again.\nOnly work sent through the official submission platform will be considered.\nNo name or identifying information should appear on the piece you’re submitting (we review the work blind).\nSimultaneous submissions are encouraged\, but please withdraw your work pronto if it has been accepted elsewhere (and if so\, congrats!).\nSubmissions are and will remain free. While submitting\, you are welcome to toss something into our tip jar to help us offset expenses – it’s always appreciated.\nWhile we can’t pay contributors at this time\, we promise to promote your pieces once the issue goes live and nominate the best work for international awards where we can. (In fact\, this micro from Issue 1 was selected for the Best Microfiction 2022 anthology.)\nDespite our name\, any reference to wolves or Virginia Woolf could raise our hackles – so proceed with caution.\nFinally\, please don’t send us work that makes us question our faith in this already fragile world – stuff that’s gratuitously sexual\, overly violent\, discriminatory\, vile or just kind of morally repugnant. And since we apparently have to spell this out: no animal cruelty.\n\n  \n\n\nRights and terms  \n\nBy submitting your work\, you grant us first electronic rights and non-exclusive archival rights. After first publication\, you retain ownership rights. If your work later appears elsewhere\, we’d love a credit for the first publication.\nSmall editorial adjustments to accepted submissions may be made in the name of clarity and flow. For more significant changes\, the author will be contacted. All other editorial decisions\, including art direction\, are the domain of The Woolf and final.\nWe reserve the right to remove contributions from the website without notice.

SUMMARY:N - Friends Journal Seeking Submissions about: George Fox
DESCRIPTION:We’re breaking two of our rules for the June/July 2024 issue. The first is our aversion to running issues focused on particular individuals. Perhaps it’s a remnant of the kind of old-school Quaker humility that gave the world plain speech\, plain dress\, and plain meetinghouse architecture\, but we’re also a bit allergic to the “Great Man” histories that ignore the context behind most social movements. We also shy away from giving attention to anniversaries\, which seem rather arbitrary and also too plentiful. \nBut rules are meant to be broken\, right? This summer we’re looking at the 400th Anniversary or George Fox’s Birth (which occurred in July of 1624; historians are not sure of the exact day). \nFor those who have never walked into a meetinghouse or even cursorily scanned the Quaker Wikipedia entry\, Fox is the founder of the Religious Society of Friends. Well\, at least he’s credited for that. In reality there was already a strong movement of independent spiritual seekers when he arrived on the scene\, and there were dozens of other ministers\, organizers\, and writers who each left their mark on the burgeoning Quaker movement. \nStill\, there’s a very good question to be asked (and perhaps an article to be written) about whether we should be making this kind of a fuss for George Fox. The irony is that those first Friends weren’t themselves interested in recent historical movements. They distrusted academic learning\, rarely quoted spiritual contemporaries (except perhaps to mock them)\, and didn’t believe in any authority other than Christs’ inward inspiration and the Bible. What would Fox himself think of all the attention we give about him? When she first heard him preach\, Fox’s future wife Margaret Fell went into a swoon when he preached “You will say Christ saith this\, and the apostles say this; but what canst thou say?” \nMany modern Friends very much care about what the apostle Fox said. In the twentieth century\, many of the most visionary Friends were historians\, from Braithwaite to Jones to Brinton. Quakers have used histories to divide us with claims that some types of Friends are closer to the original vision than others. But they have also been used to unite us by giving us a shared history that all Friends can claim. \nFriends World Committee for Consultation has had its eyes focused on the anniversary for a while\, hoping that Friends across the globe can put aside differences to get to know one another through our shared spiritual ancestor. There’s been a growing interest in recent decades for increased communication to understand differences among Friends. This seems as good a time as any to throw a Quaker block party. \nWhat does George Fox mean to you? What parts of his life or writings have inspired and buoyed your own spiritual path? But we don’t just want a figurehead: we also want to understand the context of Fox’s life—his flaws\, his evolutions\, the things that make him not a saint but a fellow traveler. Give us the nuance. How did a movement coalesce around him? What lessons does his life provide for those of us wanting to bring together today’s seekers? What pieces of his legacy have we been overlooking? \nFinally\, a few pleas: please\, please\, please don’t write about Penn’s sword unless you’re discussing nineteenth-century Quaker hagiography (which\, to be honest\, could make for an interesting article for another issue). Also\, take care to not dice up Fox quotes with so many cuts and pastes and ellipses that the original meaning is obscured. Let’s try to approach him as he was\, or at least as he presented himself.\nFast Facts \n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.\nSubmissions close March 25\, 2024 (deadline extended)\nQuestions? Email editors@friendsjournal.org\n\nLearn more general information at Friendsjournal.org/submissions.

SUMMARY:PFN - Fruit: Queer Literary Journal Seeking Submissions about: Queer Space
DESCRIPTION:What does queer space mean to you? Where is it? We want you to take us there! You might write about a physical space\, past or present\, which has queer resonance. It could be fact or fiction. It might be a story\, a description\, a map. It could be somewhere you’ve been or want to go. It could be a home lived in or designed by queers. It could be a path or a tour. You might want to explore virtual worlds and imagined spaces. Or you might think about the page as a space. \nWe think of queerness as having a strong connection to space. The word ‘queer’ comes from the word athwart\, which means across.[i] The closet is a place which we’re out of or in. And during our daily lives\, space is often on our mind: we navigate areas which aren’t designed for us and may be unsafe. We seek out and make our own places. You could read more about queer space here. \nWho Can Submit \nAnyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ is welcome. We’re particularly keen to platform underrepresented voices. This includes people of colour\, trans* and working class authors\, and writers with disabilities. \nWhat to Submit \nCreative Writing \nFor us\, ‘queer writing’ is disruptive and boundary breaking. We like to read stories which haven’t been told before and stories told in new ways. For example\, there are plenty of ‘coming out’ narratives around; we’d only be interested in reading one if it did something new – either by being formally innovative or by presenting a different perspective. We look for writing which disrupts\, breaks and plays with language. All kinds of text-based work is welcome\, including poetry\, short fiction\, non-fiction and hybrid pieces. There are no restrictions on what you send us but since this is an inclusive space\, we reject prejudiced views. \nGuidelines \n\nProse word limit: 3000 (shorter pieces preferred).\nPoetry line limit: 100.\nReview line limit: 1500.\nYou’re welcome to submit one or more pieces of work up to the word or line limit.\nPlease present your writing in .doc or .docx format if possible.\nPlease include a short biography in your email.\nIf you are a writer based in the North of England\, let us know; we’re committed to publishing local talent.\nSimultaneous submissions accepted (but please notify us if your piece is accepted elsewhere).\nWe don’t accept previously published work.

SUMMARY:P - Sprout: an eco-urban poetry journal Seeks Submissions on the Theme of: Care
DESCRIPTION:issue 4: care\n\n\n\n\n\n“Care is a species activity that includes everything we do to maintain\, continue and repair our ‘world’ so that we can live in it as well as possible. That world includes our bodies\, our selves\, and our environment\, all of which we seek to interweave in a complex\, life-sustaining web.”1\n(Fisher and Tronto\, 1990\, p. 40)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor SPROUT’s fourth issue\, we are seeking poetic submissions on the theme of ‘care’. As an experience and as a concept\, care is relational\, complex\, and broad; care also happens on a spectrum of caregiving and care-receiving. As an embodied\, interdependent\, and lifelong activity\, care appears to operate at multiple temporal and spatial scales\, and is often in flux as urban needs and ecological demands shift. We are thus particularly interested in work that interrogates the modes of engaging with others in (urban and natural) space that can speak to one or more of the following\, interrelated dimensions of care:\n\n\ncommunities of care;\ncare as a practice (and action);\nethics of care.\n\nWe are curious to see poets exploring how various methodologies of care manifest in ourselves\, in others\, and in both urban and natural spaces. The editors invite contributors to respond expansively and thoughtfully to this activated sense of care\, specifically calling for reflections on how care and stewardship of nature in urban environments can (or does) inform our sense of place and place-making. From the perspective of affect\, what does care look like or feel like? What modes of being does it summon? Is care instantiative or prospective? \nAs a journal\, we at SPROUT embrace literary experimentation in form and find ourselves inclined to publish works that play with both language and poetic expression. We encourage contributors to read our first three issues and acquaint themselves with the journal’s vision and mandate. As we are a creative project of The Nature of Cities\, we work towards thinking about greener cities for people. We publish work that speaks to these concerns and particularly welcomes image-text submissions and concrete poetry for this issue. \nPoets whose work is selected for publication\, will receive a small honorarium in USD. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nsubmitting your work\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmission Guidelines: \n\n\nSubmit 1 poem of no more than 50 lines each per submission (please note we will not consider manuscript submissions). You may submit as many single works as you like. Each poem should be a separate submission\, please do not put two poems in the same submission.\n\nSubmit via this form before March 22\, 2024.\n\nSubmissions must relate to the call’s theme: CARE.\n\nIf you have any questions about the submission guidelines\, please email the managing editor\, Emmalee Barnett\, sprout@thenatureofcities.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Fine Print: \n\n\n\nSubmissions to SPROUT must not be previously published\, including self-published work (this includes publication on blogs or social media). SPROUT should be the first publication of the work\, copyright under TNOC. SPROUT retains no rights to the individual pieces and is not due royalties for the republication of contributor’s works. We kindly ask that any republished work mention SPROUT as the place of first publication.\n\n\nWe are happy to consider simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know if your work has been accepted elsewhere. All decisions regarding submissions to SPROUT will be sent by the beginning of April 2024.\n\n\nPlease send us your best work. Your acceptance into the issue is subject to the editors’ discretion. Editors’ decisions are final. Editors cannot provide editorial feedback.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Twin Bill Seeking Submissions. Theme: Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Submissions \nArtwork by Scott Bolohan\nFiction \nWe are interested in short stories up to roughly 5\,000 words. Anything we deem significantly over the word count will not be read out of respect for the number of submissions our editors receive. \nWe are looking for writing that displays a strong personal style and a connection to the game of baseball. Most of all\, we are excited by stories that situate baseball in a broader context\, beyond the action of an individual game or at-bat. The more surprising connection to baseball\, the better. There is a $25 honorarium per accepted story. \nCreative Nonfiction \nCreative Nonfiction at The Twin Bill is a place for true stories\, boldly told. We have no formal requirements or word count\, and we encourage experimentation in the name of contemporary storytelling. \nThat said\, we urge writers to consider their story carefully and to use not a word more than strictly necessary. \nThere is a $15 honorarium per accepted piece. \nPoetry \nPlease send up to five poems per issue. We love baseball from all eras\, but we would particularly like to see poems of a more contemporary style or subject matter. \nThere is a $10 honorarium per accepted poem. \nGuidelines \nWe are on Submittable. Please submit here. There is a $3 submission fee. Writers retain all rights to their work. We are only interested in previously unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but please let us know if it is accepted elsewhere.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to The Gentian Journal. Theme: Found Things
DESCRIPTION:Submissions Call for Issue 17: Found Things \nI’m Elliot\, Guest Editor for the second Gentian issue of the academic year. This theme particularly resonates with me because I’m fascinated by place and the way we engage with spatial meaning – we spend so much of our time in our own heads\, consumed by the mundane\, that we often forget to notice this physical world around us. \nHow can poetry be located in place\, object or function? This might be rooted in memory and nostalgia\, or a constant present association that you have with the world. A poem can so often be masked in the material world\, taking on the disguise of the accidental\, functional\, or instructive to do so. \nI look forward to receiving your submissions\, \nElliot Burrin\, Guest Editor \n\n\nPoetry \nSubmit your poems as an attached Word document\, not in the body of the email. \nYou can submit up three poems. \nPoems must be no longer than 40 lines. \nUse a standard typeface and 12pt. font. \nPlease put all poems on a new page and make your titles clear. \nWe accept translations that have been properly credited. \n\n\nSubmissions should be sent to thegentianjournal@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Gentian Submission’. \n\n\nIf you would prefer to be published under a pseudonym\, or ‘Anonymous’\, please specify in the body of your email. \nWe accept simultaneous submissions and submissions of previously published work. Please notify us if your work has been accepted elsewhere (we’d like to congratulate you!). \nWe ask for non-exclusive\, one-time\, worldwide rights to publish your work in a digital format\, and then to archive it indefinitely. If your work has first been published with us\, and is later reprinted\, please credit us with its first appearance. \nWe accept no hate speech of any kind\, and will not accept any poems we feel are racist\, sexist\, transphobic\, homophobic or ableist.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to About Place Journal. Theme: Strange Wests
DESCRIPTION:West has always been more than mere direction\, a setting sun\,  evening. In lands now known by many as the United States of America\,  West invokes a fraught mythology of wilderness and conquest\, of destiny and riches\, of jackrabbit homesteads and romantic distances\, of cowboys  and bears. For so long these symbols have dominated our histories of  these lands\, centering whiteness and masculinity in a rugged\, difficult  terrain. But the West and its frontier have always been strange\, full of contradictions\, queer even. As Josh Garrett-Davis\, a curator\, scholar  at the Gene Autry Museum of the American West\, posits of the regional  West\, “[It is] a borderland—or two-or-more-sided frontier—where old and  new coexist\, collaborate\, fight\, innovate\, [holding] ample grounds for  new stories.” \nThe West as we understand it has never been uninhabited. People have  thrived in communion with these lands for thousands of years. Flora and fauna\, too. Where some see vacant desert\, or land to be occupied for the next housing development\, we cast our eyes upon resilient life\, those who understand the importance of water and resource conservation. In South Dakota\, Indigenous water advocates protest pipeline routes\, while Chicano artists muralize the scar of a border wall with the painting of  roses. \nWe call contributors to conceive of the West beyond its conventional and colonialized framework. What happens when the dam breaks\, when waters flow along their pre-colonial course and stewardship is returned to the original caretakers of the land? There are many ways to deconstruct a dam\, an archetype\, to unearth histories long-buried in sand or alpine forest. The West is multiple and many. \nIn the next issue of About Place Journal\, we invite you to consider and reimagine all things West. Send us your visual poems and performances\, your experimental stories and essays\, your art classified  by no other name than art. As we decenter traditional subjects and propagandized histories of this ambiguous region\, share with us your witness and protests\, your lineages who have lived here longer than the word itself and this country. We are particularly interested in work from young\, emerging artists (17 and younger)\, as well as work by BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists\, especially those whose stories have been excluded  by a mythology of the west centered on whiteness\, masculinity\, and  extraction.https://aboutplacejournal.submittable.com/submit/282282/strange-wests \nAbout Place Journal Submission Guidelines\n\nPoetry: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 50 lines each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx & rtf. If your poetry submission contains special formatting\, we suggest submitting a PDF in addition to your Word doc.\nFiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction and other prose: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 4000 words each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx & rtf.\nThe total number of submitted pieces cannot exceed 5\, even if your submission includes items from several genre categories.\n\nEach submission must be accompanied by a bio in doc\, docx or rtf format. Bios should be in the third person and not exceed 150 words. Please include your website\, Twitter and Instagram links if desired. \nBy submitting\, you guarantee you hold the rights to the work\, and you grant About Place Journal the rights to publish the submitted work with first serial rights (FNASR). After publication\, rights revert to the author. Original\, previously unpublished work only. All pieces must be submitted through Submittable.

Hanihaki\, Victorian declarations of betrayal and hurt\, or how plants communicate with each other and the world around them. Alternatively\, anything we haven’t listed here – the weirder the better! Hit us with what you’ve got! \nISSUE 3 Theme: Flower Language\n \nSpring’s approaching here in Western New York\, and thus we’ll begin to see the snowdrops and daffodils make their way up through the ground or snow. Sometimes\, both! For this issue\, we’re looking for pieces that incorporate aspects of flower language into the piece or wholly embody the concept – we aren’t particular subscribers to any “one” flower language. If the meaning is clear (or unclear\, even)\, we’re on board – we aren’t all too picky. Just have fun and make us look back and double-check preconceived notions of what hydrangeas (or: any other flower) mean. \nThis theme is also not limited to just flowers\, but botany as a whole. What does it mean when we have a hollowed-out pumpkin stuffed with daylillies on our front porch? Whatever the answer\, we’re looking forward to it! \nWe look forward to seeing your work! We’ve got some rough guidelines for submissions – please email us if your submission can’t be uploaded in any of these forms – we can definitely work something out! \n\nWe accept our submissions blind. Please don’t submit documents with your name on them! We will yell.\nMake sure you’re not plagiarizing someone else’s work. If your piece references another work\, please be sure to indicate that in your submission.\nWe will not accept works which promote hate speech\, racism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, etc. Common sense. Kinda?\nONE submission (piece) PER dropbox. Do not send three prose pieces in one box and then two poems in another. We will also yell about this\, and may reject all if you are submitting more pieces than there are dropboxes.\n\nPreviously-accepted submissions are more than fine! Just let us know who accepted it first\, so we can credit them 🙂\n\nPoetry (.docx or .doc\, Max 40 Lines) \nFiction (.docx\, or .doc\, Max 2500 Words) \nCreative Nonfiction (.docx or .doc\, Max 2500 Words)

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Green Ink Poetry. Theme: Enclosure
DESCRIPTION:Equinox Collections: Enclosure\nWe are looking for beautiful poems exploring Enclosure and Inclosure; the loss of common land\, public access to nature\, and environmental management are all specific interpretations of this theme we’d particularly like to see\, and we will be selecting work for inclusion based on how well it relates to these themes as well as their integration into natural imagery. \nSubmission Details\n\n\nLength Limits: We cannot accept poems that are longer than an A4 page. \n\n\nFormat Limits: Blocks – Unfortunately\, neither our print or digital publications are able to properly display poems formatted as a block. \n\n\nMax Number of Poems: 3 – Whilst we love reading all of the work sent to us\, we’ve found that a hard limit on the number of poems sent per submission means we’re better able to give everyone the time and consideration they deserve. This means that any extra poems sent to us will be disregarded. \n\n\nCredit: Please include a short third-person bio in your submission\, including any personal social media handles or other links you would like to have listed. Previously published poems will be considered for inclusion\, but must come with full attribution. \n\n\nContent Exclusions: Work of an overtly sexual nature\, or that promotes any form of hatred\, racism\, sexism\, or other expressions of intolerance will not be considered. \n\n\nWhere To Send Submissions: Submit your work by emailing us at editors@greeninkpoetry.co.uk – Please ensure that the email subject line includes “Enclosure”. \n\n\nSubmission Format: Please send your submissions formatted as a word document or PDF attached to an email\, or in the body of the email itself.

SUMMARY:F - Liars' League Seeking Submissions about: Dreams & Reality
DESCRIPTION:WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR\, IN SHORT:\n– New fiction\, i.e. unpublished (print/web/audio)\n– Stories which are on-theme\n– Anonymised (no name on the document)\n– Word count: STRICTLY 800-2000\n– Send to: liars@liarsleague.com\n \nStories must be \n1. Unpublished (in print or online)\, unbroadcast\, and not a prizewinner in any previous competition. \n2. Between 800-2000 words long. \n3. Submitted to liars@liarsleague.com by 11.59pm (UK time) on March 3. \n4. Submitted as an MS Word (.doc\, .docx) or .rtf document\, ideally with 1.5 or double spacing. NO PDFs PLEASE. \n5. Attached to an email which has the story title\, the month of the event and the theme in the subject header. Please put your name at the bottom of your email but NOT on your story\, as we prefer to judge anonymously. \n6. A prose short story. This means no poetry\, no scripts\, no non-fiction. We’ll look at novel extracts\, but only if they work as stand-alone pieces. \n7. ON-THEME. This means that there should be a traceable link to the theme\, or that the theme should be invoked or interpreted as a central part of the story. Simply featuring a bar called “Duck & Dive” if that’s the theme is not enough; but make your main character a dodgy dealer in stolen goods\, and we’ll be interested. \nWriters must be \n1. Willing to have their name and the text of their story up on this site if they win. \n2. Willing to be paid for their work in kind. Unfortunately\, Liars’ League does not currently pay contributors in $ or £. However\, if your story is chosen\, you will benefit from the following: \n– Publication of your story on this site: it will also be considered for future print anthologies published by our partners Arachne Press \n– Free drinks all night (if you are able to attend the event). Teetotallers will be fed. \n– A reading of your work by a professional actor (CLICK HERE to see a blog post on what that’s like\, written by five-time winning author Mike Clarke) \n– An MP3 and a link to a YouTube video recording of the reading \n– SUBMITTING FROM ABROAD? If you *cannot* attend the event\, due to living abroad or some other obstacle\, we will send you a free book to thank you for your contribution\, as drinks are rather messy to post. You can choose your favourite title from our selection of four anthologies (one award-winning!)\, or any book by any of our authors. \nIMPORTANT: By submitting your work to Liars’ League you are giving us permission to add your email address to our mailing list – this means we can inform you of the winning stories and send updates\, links to our latest stories\, and competition and submission opportunities approximately monthly. If you want to be removed from our mailing list you can email us at any time with Unsubscribe in the subject line. We’ll never share your data with anyone else – promise. \nSubmission of your work also gives us permission to upload the text and an audio and video recording of your story (if successful) onto our website\, YouTube channel and podcast so that everyone can enjoy it. If this is an issue just email and we’re happy to discuss. \nAnd finally … \n1. Please submit no more than ONE story per theme. This is for reading-time reasons. \n2. Please don’t resubmit any story we have previously rejected unless we ask you to\, however much it has changed. \n3. Please don’t be discouraged. We really want to see your work – so send it in! SUMMARY:PFN - PRISM international Seeking Submissions on: Hybrids
DESCRIPTION:What is the joy of the hybrid gesture? Where does it live? And how does hybridizing create that secret third thing? We’re curious about the possibility of the hybrid\, its spirit\, generations\, and generative qualities; its rendering into something capacious enough to hold the boundlessness of the in-between\, the cut-up\, the collab. And in the context of nations and worldviews intent on categorizing and punishing the act of mixing or joining together\, what does hybridity promise for those of us who don’t fit neatly into established norms of nation\, sexuality\, body\, and more? \nSend us your cross-genre mash-ups\, poetry comics or collages\, ekphrastic combines\, fragmentary epistles\, mixtapes on repeat\, queerings of genre/space/time\, counter-colonial translations\, intertextual visions—the unexpected work that creates its own language and rules. If you’re a writer who lives between worlds\, or if hybridity speaks to you in a different way\, we also want to hear from you. \nPROSE GUIDELINES\n\n\nSubmit only one piece at a time\, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1\,000 words)\, in which case you may submit up to three pieces in a single document.\n\n\nOur recommended length for submissions is approximately 4\,000 words or less. We have a limited page count per issue and aim to offer a platform for as many talented writers as possible. While we accept prose submissions of up to 25 pages (6\,250 words)\, we must emphasize that it is only exceptional pieces of this length that will receive publication.\n\n\nSend original\, unpublished literary essays\, personal essays\, hybrid-genre works\, and literary journalism. Please note that we do not publish rhetorical\, academic\, or strictly journalistic non-fiction.\n\n\n  \nPOETRY GUIDELINES \n\n\n\n\nSubmit up to four poems\, to a maximum of six pages. Do NOT submit six one-page poems.\n\n\nWe welcome cross-genre and interdisciplinary poetry and poetics.\n\n\nIn your cover letter\, please specify the number of poems you are submitting and list the titles of the poems.\n\n\nPoetry submissions should be typed and single-spaced. If you would like to submit poems with alternate spacing\, please mention it in your cover letter and submit a PDF instead of a Word document.

SUMMARY:F - On the Premises Short Story Contest Theme: Vehicle
DESCRIPTION:The Current Contest\nShort Story Contest #43 launched on Sunday\, December 10\, 2023. \nVEHICLE \nFor this contest\, write a creative\, compelling\, well-crafted story between 1\,000 and 5\,000 words long in which some kind of vehicle plays an important role. Merely using the vehicle as a simple plot device or to help characters get somewhere is not enough. For instance\, “While flying home I made a bunch of new friends on the flight” isn’t good enough\, because the same story–making new friends–could easily be told without the plane. \nGENRE RULES: No fiction aimed at readers younger than 12\, no exploitative sex\, no over-the-top grossout horror\, and no stories that are obvious parodies of existing fictional worlds/characters created by other authors. (For the same reason\, we do not accept “fan fiction”.) Other than that\, we’ll take anything from the most super-realistic literary drama to crazy farces (real-world or otherwise) to any variant of science fiction or fantasy you can imagine. Read our past issues and you’ll see. \nDeadline: 11:59 PM Eastern US time\, Friday\, March 1\, 2024. \nOne entry per author. There is no fee for entering this contest.\nRemember to take all identifying information out of your story! Tell us who you are in the space provided in the web form cover letter you get when you click on the “submit” button\, NOT in your story! No headers\, no bylines… just the story.

SUMMARY:P - the engine(idling Seeking Submissions on: The Slant
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Submissions are currently OPEN for Issue 2! \nThe theme is The Slant\, as in … \n\n“ Tell all the truth but tell it slant —” \n\nPoems that explore the associations and connections of a unique mind. The poet’s eye. A perspective that only the individual could conjure. Worlds\, experiences\, thoughts\, and events cast in a new and distinct light. Poems that focus on the strength of voice and personality. Poems that tinker with language\, imagery\, and unfamiliarity. We want a peek behind the curtain\, to see how the poet sees. \nThe theme is very loose and open to interpretation. The poem’s subject can be anything\, as long as it is told slant. \nOverall\, we are looking for writing that is arresting\, musical and absorbing.  We champion originality\, inventiveness\, word-smithing\, vivid imagery\, and bold leaps. \nTo submit\, please email 1 – 4 poems to the editor at engineidling@gmail.com. \nYou may send poems as a .docx attachment\, or copy / paste them into the body of the email. \nPlease use a standard font.  We will not be able to accommodate specialized formatting. Tabs and indents are okay\, however\, lots of white space\, shape poems\, or poems with specific spatial needs don’t translate well on site. \nCover letters are appreciated but not necessary. At minimum\, include a short third person bio\, with your name (or pen name) as you would like it to appear in the issue.  Your bio can list some of your previous publications\, and/or something interesting about yourself. A few lines will do. Please also include your Instagram / X handles if you want to be followed / tagged in posts\, in the event of your publication. Our acceptance letter asks you for permission to post snippets of your work on social media to promote the issue. \nWe do not charge for submissions\, and we unfortunately cannot pay our contributors. \nthe engine(idling is a new publication.  Depending on the number of submissions we receive\, expect to hear from us within one month\, but likely much sooner.  If you have not heard back from us after one month\, feel free to inquire by replying back to your original email. \nSimultaneous submissions are okay\, but please promptly withdraw work accepted elsewhere by replying back to your original submission email. \nPreviously published work will not be accepted at this time. \nWe honor First North American Serial Rights.  We want to be your piece’s first publication but the rights to the work are always yours. Your work is your own.  If your piece is published in another journal after publication here\, we ask that you include a nod to us being the first. \nWe will not read work that is intentionally hateful\, nor will we entertain the saccharine. \nWe look forward to reading your work! \nWe love experimental work\, work that pushes boundaries\, work that is unexpected or plays with the unfamiliar\, absurdists\, humorists\, hybrid forms\, cut / pastes and erasures (with sources cited)\, rhyming poems\, traditional forms\, free verse\, surrealists\, prose poems\, micro poems\, works that cannot be defined… \nThe rules are very loose and we are always open to something new. The evidence of craft is what interests us most.
