DESCRIPTION:Exploring the theme of Water\nMichigan State University Libraries Short Édition\, an innovative publishing platform affiliated with the international publisher Short Édition\, seeks short work (8\,000 character max\, about 1\,000 words) exploring the theme of Water. Submissions accepted through December 16\, 2022. Selected work will appear online and in MSU Short Édition machines\, and will be considered for publication internationally. This call is in conjunction with the Broad Art Museum’s 2022 fall exhibit\, Flint is Family in Three Acts\, featuring the photography of Latoya Ruby Frazier. Water\, for our purposes\, will be broadly interpreted and might include meditations on physical\, social\, racial\, environmental\, or other themes. We seek work that avoids platitudes and sentimentality\, demonstrates a deep understanding of craft\, and engages with fresh thinking. \nAccepted submissions will be included in a print issue distributed to all authors and added to MSU Libraries collections. Work will also be compiled in a themed issue available on the MSUL Short Édition site. \nPlease limit submissions to one story\, one short essay\, or up to five poems. Poems must be submitted separately. For example\, if you are submitting five poems\, each poem must be uploaded individually. Each submission should include a short biography directly beneath the work. DESCRIPTION:It’s after midnight\nsomewhere…\n \nSubmit to Flash Monster\nWell\, here’s something different. We’ve been running Halloween contests since 2014\, but this year\, in true nightmare before Christmas fashion\, we’re kicking off our Flash Monster contest mid-October and running it up until the holidays are upon us. \nThat may change the calculations on your lab-grown abominations a little bit; might be time to make your sins against Nature a touch more festive. \nThere’s plenty of room for holiday-themed horror here\, but we also don’t want to see 50 killer Santa Clauses or dozens of Krampuses (Krampi?). Mix things up. Winter themes work (we do love a good snow beast). So do monsters totally unrelated to winter and the holidays. \nIf you participated in or read our Folked-Up Flash contest earlier this year\, you know we’ve got a wicked hankering for folk horror\, and that’s not a bad angle to go here either. Tap into ancient pagan rituals. Subvert traditional holiday tropes. Gifts with sinister implications? Granted wishes with ironic outcomes? The holidays are a good time to mess with classical elements. A little sentimentality with your depravity? Sure\, why the hell not. We’re not monsters. Or just write about something gnarly and weird; that’s the whole point\, after all. \nWe like literary approaches\, but we also dig genre and pulpy takes as well.  Art house or grindhouse. DESCRIPTION:Vol. 4: SURVIVE \nTwo years into a global pandemic\, the existing stressors of domestic terrorism\, gender- and race-based hate\, and financial insecurity have reached a fever pitch. With basic human rights being stripped by governments at every turn\, it can feel like a struggle just to survive day-to-day. Yet survive we do\, and that’s an achievement deserving of recognition. \nFor this issue\, we want to hear what survival means for you and your queer identity as it relates to all areas of fashion\, including but not limited to clothing\, cosmetics\, skincare\, hair (styles and products)\, shoes\, perfumery/cologne\, accessories\, hosiery\, etc. Want to tell us about your favorite chainmail or faux-brass knuckles? What about that shade of red lipstick that feels like armor? How about your favorite bedazzled binder or mobility aid? We’d also love to hear about the roles clothing has played for in surviving (and/or recovering from) harm or protecting oneself against danger\, illness\, and other threats. Of course\, these are just a few examples. We are open to pieces across subjects and genres\, but in the spirit of queer and BIPOC celebration\, we’re especially interested in pieces that demonstrate triumph and endurance. \nNOTE: Submissions are not required to align with the theme\, but we will be highlighting the pieces that demonstrate survival. Priority\, as always\, goes to BIPOC writers and artists\, and we particularly want to hear from those in the trans\, non-binary\, intersex\, and other underrepresented and under-published communities.

DESCRIPTION:One hundred seems perfect. It’s the basis of percentages\, the perfect test score\, the boiling point of water (Celsius)\, purity. Pythagoreans considered 100 as divine because it is the square (10 x 10) of the divine decad (10). Even a Scrabble set has 100 tiles. \nAnd yet 100 is a fragment. It’s an arbitrary marker\, like the “First 100 Days” of a president’s term—merely a promise of what’s to come\, or a whiff of what has passed. \nThe whole is a part and the part is a whole. The 100-word format forces the writer to question each word\, to reckon with Flaubert’s mot juste in a way that even most flash fiction doesn’t. At the same time the brevity of the form allows the writer “to keep a story free from explanation\,” as Walter Benjamin wrote. For life doesn’t lend itself so easily to our elucidations. “Incoherence is preferable to a distorting order\,” said Roland Barthes. None of us will ever know the whole story in other words. We can only collect a bag full of shards that each seem perfect. \n100 words for your story … no more or no less. Tell a story\, write a prose poem\, pen a slice of your memoir\, or try your hand at an essay. \nYou get 100 words—exactly 100 words—which is both the pain and the pleasure here. It’s short\, you tell yourself. You could write 100 words at a bus stop\, on your lunch break\, in your sleep. But with 100 words you must tell the whole story in its entirety\, so it holds together like a perfect little doll house. (Your title is not part of the 100 words.) \nPlease include a short bio (25 words\, max!) with your submission. Also\, did we say exactly 100 words? We weren’t kidding! Also\, make friends with your spell-check\, or have a friend proofread your story.

Over thousands of years\, we’ve forged narratives of our origins\, our journeys and our dreams as a means of accounting for who we are and to define our place in the world. \nIn the twenty-first century\, as our existential and environmental crises mount\, humanity’s place feels distinctly tenuous. What lessons from the past can inform\, even shape\, our increasingly uncertain future? And are the stories we’re telling ourselves about what comes next – environmental downfall or technological salvation – helping or hindering what we might do and where we might go? \nIn celebration of Griffith Review’s eightieth edition and twentieth anniversary\, Creation Stories looks to the stars above and the earth below to map our ever-evolving relationships with the world around us. From archaeology and astronomy to AI and transhumanism\, the preservation of traditional knowledge to the intricacies of postmodern identity\, this edition travels through time and space to explore the many tales of who we are and where we might be headed. \nThings for you to note: \n* We’re looking for non-fiction that responds to the theme.\n* We’d prefer pieces that are no longer than 4\,000 words (they can\, of course\, be much shorter than this).\n* Attention poets! Once you receive either an acceptance or rejection\, you are welcome to submit a different work to us. \nYour manuscript length must be 2\,000 words or fewer (not including the title\, author name\, or contact information). \nWhat we are seeking:\nFor Prose (as described by editor Jerry McFadden) \nWe are an “old fashioned” editorial crew: we love stories. We admire great writing; we swoon at beautifully worded sentences and lovely descriptions\, and chuckle at clever metaphors–but we always choose a great story over all of that. We constantly receive great character sketches\, serious mood pieces\, wonderfully written scenes that in the end are just wonderful scenes or elegant reminiscences.… And we judge all of this by one simple standard–where is the story? \nWhat’s a story? A character (or characters) that we care for (or hate) in a conflict (plot) that leads to a plausible resolution that has an emotional effect on the character and on the readers. For us\, a terrific story trumps even superior writing. The writing quality may be less outstanding than in the character sketches\, mood pieces\, scenes\, or reminiscences\, if the story pulls us in and makes us root for the character as he/she wrestles through a conflict. \nThis does not disqualify memoirs or reminiscences\, as long as they are told as a story–a real-life story. You are the character fighting through a conflict which changed you somehow. If this hadn’t happened\, you wouldn’t be trying to tell us about it. \nSo send us a story\, real or imagined. Give us great writing\, but more important\, give us a great story. We will love you for it. \nFor Poetry (as described by editor Paul Weidknecht) \nWe enjoy reading poetry at the Roundtable and are intrigued as to how poets translate their work from the various themes we offer. We understand the nature of much poetry is personal\, often highly so\, making the process of what goes into accepting or rejecting a poem difficult to define. Poets might rightfully ask\, “What makes a good (publishable) poem?” To which editors might deliver the easy answer\, “We know it when we read it.”  Of course\, that answer is too slippery to be of any value\, so here are some observations about poetry and how poets might refine their work: \nWhile prose can stand a degree of dilution\, poetry is concentrated. From speaking with poets at writer’s conferences\, I’ve heard that word—concentrated—come up time and again. In a poem\, possibly due to its brevity compared to a short story\, readers roll around the ‘flavor’ of words in their minds\, sort of like a literary sommelier. Word number and choice are important\, as poetry readers (read: editors) don’t skim. \nPoems addressing emotional issues\, i.e.\, the tragedy of losing a loved one\, are most effective when they reach out\, causing the reader to reflect in a similar way\, and hopefully\, compelling multiple readings. A silent nod by a reader might be one of the best compliments a poet can receive. \nOther items of which poetry is fine; its originality is refreshing—as long as you keep the interest of someone reading that abstractness. When a poem becomes too much of a puzzle\, reading it becomes a chore. A poem is not a piece of flash fiction with line breaks; short stories do that better. Read the poem out loud. How does it sound? Does it stumble along under the leaden awkwardness of worn phrases or does it ascend in the inspiration of inventive language and imagery? \nPerhaps the two most important rules regarding the creation of poetry\, or any other piece of creative writing\, are the most obvious to understand and simplest to do: keep rewriting your own work; keep reading others’ work.

DESCRIPTION:We love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nNon-Fiction: 500-800 word critical essays about your favorite first line from a literary work.\n \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story\, poem\, or essay be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \nFour-Part Stories: If you think you are up to the challenge\, you can write a four-part story that uses the spring\, summer\, fall\, and winter sentences (five parts\, if you are brave enough to include a fifth story that ends with the last line). The world may shift all around us\, tearing up our soil and roots. Yet\, through all of it\, we grow. We grow upwards – towards the sunlight that nourishes us and gives us the hope of a new Spring. The theme of Bloom & Blossom is all about the resurgence of life\, growth\, and the creativity we feel as the days start to get longer and our flowers begin to open up again. We want to hear from you what it means to Bloom & Blossom this Spring. \nWhat we’re looking for: We want your poetry\, short stories\, essays – any medium you choose to express yourself in is welcome!  For poetry submissions\, please submit up to three poems. DESCRIPTION:Spring Issue #3 Submission Guidelines\nWe appreciate good writing in any genre. We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nUsing the elements\n3Elements Literary Review  is a themed literary journal\, and all THREE elements (the specific words\, Fugitive\, Swing Set\, Pinecone) given for the submission period must be included in your story or poem for your work to be considered for publication. NO EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER. \nYour story or poem doesn’t have to be about the three elements or even revolve around them; simply use your imagination to create whatever you want. You can use any form of the words/elements for the given submission period. For example\, if the elements are: Flash\, Whimsy\, and Seizure; we would accept the usage of Flashed\, Whimsical\, and Seizures. \nHow to submit your work\nWe will only accept previously unpublished (including digital/online content) work submitted to us through Submittable. You can easily submit material to us from our Submit page. Any work that is sent to us as an attachment\, or in the body of an email\, through our ‘Contact’ page\, or any other way outside of Submittable will automatically be declined. \nLength\nThere is no minimum word count\, but please keep your fiction and nonfiction submissions under 3\,500 words. Poetry must be under two typed pages.

SUMMARY:F - The Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize
DESCRIPTION:Invisible Publishing is pleased to announce the inaugural Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize\, which will be awarded to a promising and unique literary fiction manuscript by a writer who has never had a full-length book (of poetry\, fiction\, or nonfiction) published. The selected manuscript will be published by Invisible Publishing in 2024–25. In addition to a $1000 advance against royalties\, the winning writer will receive a $3000 prize. \nInvisible is committed to publishing a diverse array of writers and presenting unique perspectives\, and we are looking for work that is deeply grounded in a sense of difference and the unexpected. Other than that\, we’re up for anything from holiday romances to new takes on the nineteenth-century whaling novel. With this in mind\, we strongly encourage LGBTQ2SIA+ writers\, Indigenous writers\, writers from marginalized communities\, and writers of colour to submit their work. \nThe Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize is awarded in collaboration with York University’s Book Publishing program and Dr. Matt Bucemi\, Assistant Professor of Book Publishing. York’s students will help Invisible’s staff to choose the winning manuscript and will offer their feedback on the initial edit. This is a chance for students to get an intimate look at the publishing process and to make a meaningful contribution to an exciting new project; once they have given their early input\, the project will be guided to completion by Invisible’s own team. The winning author will be given the opportunity to give a keynote talk and hold a Q&A with the York student community. \nPublisher Norm Nehmetallah on what makes the First Novel Prize so exciting: “Our mission is to publish wholly original books and to sustain literary communities of all sorts. This prize helps us fulfill that mission on several levels: we’ll discover new authors who deserve to have their voices broadcasted to the world\, bring excellent new books into the market\, and foster the next generation of publishing talent by showing students how the industry\, and independent publishing in particular\, works.” \nGuidelines: Authors must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents to submit. Otherwise\, submissions to the First Novel Prize should follow all of our existing submission guidelines. Agented submissions are welcome. The submission period for the inaugural prize runs from 9 January to 28 February 2023. The winner will be announced sometime in April.
