Our purpose is to encourage one another to know ourselves more deeply\, to value the stories we have to tell\, and to connect with a sense of feminine wisdom and community that has nourished women throughout history. \nWe honor the diversity of spirituality\, and recognize that the edification of one’s spiritual life brings healing to our earth\, to our families and communities\, and to ourselves. We center marginalized voices and prioritize the work of BIPOC creatives. We seek to create a safe and welcoming space for survivors of sexual assault\, domestic violence\, and child abuse. We reserve the right to remove any work from Cordella Magazine if it comes to our attention that the author is an abuser. \nWe are particularly interested in work that relates to a sense of spiritual life\, ecology\, and community\, but we welcome submissions of all kinds that reflect one’s unique stories. We accept poetry\, short fiction\, essays\, memoir and other creative non-fiction. DESCRIPTION:We love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nNon-Fiction: 500-800 word critical essays about your favorite first line from a literary work.\n \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story\, poem\, or essay be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \nFour-Part Stories: If you think you are up to the challenge\, you can write a four-part story that uses the spring\, summer\, fall\, and winter sentences (five parts\, if you are brave enough to include a fifth story that ends with the last line). DESCRIPTION:Spring Issue #3 Submission Guidelines\nWe appreciate good writing in any genre. We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nUsing the elements\n3Elements Literary Review  is a themed literary journal\, and all THREE elements (the specific words\, Fugitive\, Swing Set\, Pinecone) given for the submission period must be included in your story or poem for your work to be considered for publication. NO EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER. \nYour story or poem doesn’t have to be about the three elements or even revolve around them; simply use your imagination to create whatever you want. You can use any form of the words/elements for the given submission period. For example\, if the elements are: Flash\, Whimsy\, and Seizure; we would accept the usage of Flashed\, Whimsical\, and Seizures. \nHow to submit your work\nWe will only accept previously unpublished (including digital/online content) work submitted to us through Submittable. DESCRIPTION:Invisible Publishing is pleased to announce the inaugural Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize\, which will be awarded to a promising and unique literary fiction manuscript by a writer who has never had a full-length book (of poetry\, fiction\, or nonfiction) published. The selected manuscript will be published by Invisible Publishing in 2024–25. In addition to a $1000 advance against royalties\, the winning writer will receive a $3000 prize. \nInvisible is committed to publishing a diverse array of writers and presenting unique perspectives\, and we are looking for work that is deeply grounded in a sense of difference and the unexpected. Other than that\, we’re up for anything from holiday romances to new takes on the nineteenth-century whaling novel. With this in mind\, we strongly encourage LGBTQ2SIA+ writers\, Indigenous writers\, writers from marginalized communities\, and writers of colour to submit their work. \nThe Invisible Publishing First Novel Prize is awarded in collaboration with York University’s Book Publishing program and Dr. Matt Bucemi\, Assistant Professor of Book Publishing. York’s students will help Invisible’s staff to choose the winning manuscript and will offer their feedback on the initial edit. This is a chance for students to get an intimate look at the publishing process and to make a meaningful contribution to an exciting new project; once they have given their early input\, the project will be guided to completion by Invisible’s own team. The winning author will be given the opportunity to give a keynote talk and hold a Q&A with the York student community. \nPublisher Norm Nehmetallah on what makes the First Novel Prize so exciting: “Our mission is to publish wholly original books and to sustain literary communities of all sorts. This prize helps us fulfill that mission on several levels: we’ll discover new authors who deserve to have their voices broadcasted to the world\, bring excellent new books into the market\, and foster the next generation of publishing talent by showing students how the industry\, and independent publishing in particular\, works.” \nGuidelines: Authors must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents to submit. Otherwise\, submissions to the First Novel Prize should follow all of our existing submission guidelines. Agented submissions are welcome. The submission period for the inaugural prize runs from 9 January to 28 February 2023. The winner will be announced sometime in April.

DESCRIPTION:Submissions are restricted to women and nonbinary people \nEven as the conditions for human life on earth destabilize\, even as ecosystems collapse\, and bodies both human and nonhuman are uprooted from their homelands\, even as technologies enable and encourage unprecedented forms of disconnection\, human bodies are rediscovering old ways—and finding new and remarkable ways—to come into relation with place. In the last decade especially\, we’ve gained an enormous amount of scientific knowledge about trees\, about the mycelial realm\, about the waters\, about our atmosphere and cosmos.  And in many cases\, it’s been accompanied by a willingness to listen in ways that\, except for indigenous peoples\, we have not done before. \nIssue #16 (Deadline: March 17\, 2023) will center on the question of human bodies in (and out of) place. What brings us into profound relation to place—and what pulls us out? In a social world that feels less and less place-dependent\, and a physical world that is being reconfigured by climate change and habitat loss\, how do we sustain our connection to physical place? How does being in profound relation to place change everything between\, around and about us?

DESCRIPTION:When early Friends did away with the clergy they did away with hierarchy: or did they? Every generation of Friends have had debates over authority and leadership (sometimes fierce enough to lead to schisms) and the Friends Journal news column continues to publish modern-day stories which hinge on questions of power. With the rise of Quaker bureaucracies in the mid-twentieth-century\, a new kind of professional leadership has taken hold without always examining the pluses and minuses of these new roles. Quakers also have always benefited from a kind of renegade authority from below–think of a figure like Benjamin Lay\, speaking a truth to the power of the slave-owning Quaker leadership of the time\, expelled from membership. How do we encourage this kind of leadership—and how might we be discouraging it today? \nWe prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style and with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. We publish poems that use image and metaphor to recreate an experience for the reader—which show rather than tell\, “be” rather than mean. \nSubmissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them.. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought.

DESCRIPTION:Griffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle\n  \nIn his 1930 essay ‘Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren’\, John Maynard Keynes spelt out a vision of the impending utopia. Work\, he said\, will become a thing of the past. ‘For the first time since creation\,’ he predicted\, ‘man will be faced with his real\, his permanent problem – how to occupy the leisure which science…will have won for him.’ \nSo where did this vision of future past go? Like baco-foil suits and meals of protein pills\, it proved to be a concept that withered on the vine. Instead of an excess of free time to be enjoyed at leisure\, a radically different regime now dominates the developed nations: the leisure principle. \nThe leisure principle is one of work hard to play hard\, a rigorous pursuit of monetarised hedonism: YOLO\, live your best life\, have a good time all the time. It has rendered the world a pleasure garden – for those who can afford it – of interminable excess and consumption without end. \nGriffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle sets out to scrutinise the terms and conditions of this contemporary compact. From the ecstasy of the digital to the monied spectacle that is sport\, the gamification of everyday life to the flourishing hierarchy of influencers\, new codes and disciplines have emerged from this regimentation of recreation. \nWe’re looking for fiction and non-fiction that addresses the question of how we came to cede so much\, and at such a price\, just to amuse ourselves to death. Are we learning anything as we pay more to play more?
