We want fiction with memorable characters and realistic plots\, poetry that is fresh and original\, and nonfiction that is both thoughtful and entertaining.\nWe will accept only writing that has been proofread for spelling and grammar. Trust us on this one. We keep our virtual machete very sharp for people who are grammatically challenged\, and we are not afraid to use it.\nHaving said that\, as an international ‘zine\, we accept differences in spelling usages (e.g. British vs American English) and will publish whatever is considered correct in an author’s home country.\nWe are not interested in explicit sexual content\, gratuitous violence\, or repetitive swearing\, unless it is essential to the plot and not included solely for shock value.\nPlease do not send us any of the following: poetry that sounds like it ought to be on a Hallmark card\, poetry you copied from a Hallmark card\, how-to articles\, first drafts of anything\, fanfiction\, anything full of sentimentality\, or religious and/or political propaganda disguised as fiction.\nThis ought to be obvious\, but only send us your own work\, humans. DESCRIPTION:March is in like a lion and out like a lamb\, but this month at Stone’s Throw\, we want to reverse it. Give us meek characters who find their fire by the end of the story. What happens when repression gives way to hedonism and rage? Or maybe your protagonist was already a secret badass\, and just needed that nudge to show their true stripes? Maybe they go too far\, and have to make sense of what they’ve done when they come back to their senses? Keep it within the usual RHP boundaries. \nStone’s Throw is the monthly online companion to Rock and a Hard Place Magazine\, delivering shorter\, sharper content on a regular basis in an electronic medium\, before collecting all 12 stories for an annual print anthology. Each month\, writers will be given a submission prompt\, and the best of the best\, by our estimation\, will be posted here the following month. \nInterested in Submitting?\nStone’s Throw will open for submissions the first three days of every month\, from 12AM on the first through 12AM on the fourth (with some wiggle room here and there to account for the editors being human). We’re looking for all the same dark fiction\, crime\, and noir as our usual submissions\, but with a target length between 1\,000 and 2\,000 words\, and aligned with the monthly submissions prompt (see below). DESCRIPTION:To be honest\, I posted a theme and prompt for Issue 14 a couple weeks before the election. But I completely freaked out when I woke up Nov. 6 and saw the election results. I was shocked and horrified. I was also triggered. I felt shame and betrayal at what this country has become. I had to take some time off and I had to re-focus. \nIssue 14 will be a reaction\, a declaration of resistance\, a doubling down of queer and trans voices. Claude Cahun and her partner\, Marcel Moore\, were strident anti-fascists. They were so active in the resistance that they were captured\, imprisoned\, and sentenced to death. They only escaped that fate by the end of the war. So here’s the new theme for 14: \nWe Are Not Going Back!\n  \nWhat to Submit\nWriting\nWe accept any kind of written work: poetry\, prose\, essays\, fiction\, creative non-fiction\, scripts\, hybrid\, experimental writing\, whatever. \n500 Words or Less: You may submit up to three (3) per issue. \n500-1000 Words: You may submit up to one (1) per issue. \nWhat Not to Submit\n\nDon’t submit work that you do not have the rights to.\nErotica is fine\, but nothing explicit.\nWe appreciate horror as a genre\, but it’s not what we’re looking for.\nNo hate\, racism\, sexism\, misogyny\, transphobia\, torture\, gratuitous violence\, or anything that aspires to cause harm.\n\nHow to Submit\nWhat follows are our requirements for submissions of work to us. We will not typically reject a submission if it doesn’t meet these requirements exactly. However\, any contributor who consistently submits work that is sloppy or hard to understand\, is less likely to receive a notice of acceptance. \nWe require submissions to come from our Submission Form. This allows us to better keep track of them. \nWriting Submissions Format\nWe accept works submitted in plain text\, .rtf\, .doc\, .docx\, or .pdf. \nIf your work requires any special formatting\, pdf is suggested. We reserve the right to treat some of these types of work as text-based\, and some as visual art. But we can’t make any broad guidelines here. These kinds of works will necessarily involve conversations between author and publisher so that decisions can be made jointly.\n\nWritten work will be formatted and displayed according to our internal style guide. From breaking down the stereotypes of toxic masculinity to embracing emotional vulnerability\, it highlights the intersection of language\, culture\, and societal expectations surrounding what is deemed “masculine” and “feminine.” \nWe are eager to publish firsthand experiences by men\, factual retellings of stories told by men in the author’s life\, and reflections of the author’s personal experiences with emotion\, identity\, and the male experience.
