SUMMARY:N - Call for Submissions to Griffith Review. Theme: Attachment Styles
DESCRIPTION:GriffithReview84\nAttachment Styles (non-fiction only)\nNow open\n\nThe attachments we form in our lifetimes shape our experience of the world and our understanding of who we are. ‘Hell is other people\,’ wrote Jean-Paul Sartre\, his point being less about misanthropy and more about how entwined our self-perception is with the ways in which others perceive us. And alongside our personal relationships – from filial to friendship\, from collegiate to romantic – sit the complex emotional connections we form with places\, ideas and objects. How do we navigate these varying attachments\, and what can they offer us when our lives are so mediated by technology? Can we break free of the tropes and traps associated with our most primal relationships: the social expectations of motherhood\, the burdens of filial duty\, the complexities of infidelity? \nAttachment Styles goes far beyond the family tree to consider the pleasures\, pitfalls and peculiarities of our messy human relations. \nThings for you to note:\n* We’re looking for non-fiction that responds to the theme.\n* We’d prefer pieces that are no longer than 4\,000 words (they can\, of course\, be much shorter than this). \nSubmissions close: 11:59 pm AEST\, 14 January 2024

SUMMARY:P - Shepton Snowdrops Poetry Competition. Theme: Nature Unbound

I’m looking for writing that reflects the drive that nature has to just be\, no matter where the boundaries lie. I’m looking for innovation of craft and thought. Not just dandelions squeezing through the gaps between paving slabs\, what about the re-wilding of rivers\, what about the window box encouraging pollinators in a high rise flat\, what about the nightingales singing from the overgrowth of an industrial estate’s wasteland. Grow your thoughts\, let your poems flourish. Where is the connection to nature that doesn’t conform to stereotype? How do you connect to nature if your life is constrained by circumstance\, disability\, societal?  Nature Unbound is about thinking outside of traditional nature writing tropes. I’m excited to see where you take it.”

SUMMARY:F - Myths\, Gods & Immortals Anthology Series Seeking Submissions about the Character of Anansi
DESCRIPTION:Discover the mythology of humankind through its heroes\, characters\, gods and immortal figures. Myths\, Gods & Immortals brings together the new and the ancient\, familiar stories with a fresh and imaginative twist. Each book brings back to life a classic mythological or folkloric figure\, with completely new stories alongside the original tales. New and emerging writers from open submissions\, reveal hidden themes\, casting fresh perspectives on well-known stories\, alongside specially commissioned text on the origins and the cultural background of the mythology. The first three books will focus respectively on Odin\, Anansi and Medusa. \n\nAnansi\nAnansi is at once a creator god\, a trickster folk hero\, a wily spider and a heroic symbol of resistance. From his origins in West African folklore\, to his lauded status in Jamaica\, Anansi is a versatile immortal whose many stories reflect the early world of his origins\, and the potential for re-imagination. Sometimes dark and chilling\, occasionally light-hearted\, but always lively and clever\, Anansi appears in the lives of everyday folk\, pricks the pomposity of the mighty and in this collection of new stories\, appears in the modern and the ancient world\, a symbol still of individuality and resilience\, adapting to City life\, with the undertow of ancient lore ever-present. Stories submitted for consideration need to explore new angles to the character: have him follow alternative paths\, present different viewpoints\, imagine new futures\, or perhaps pursue story lines that are hinted at in the original tales. \nSubmissions to: Anansi@flametreepublishing.com \nTerms:\n\nMultiple submissions are fine but must be in separate emails.\nSimultaneous submissions are fine but you must have the right to license your story in an anthology.\nFor accepted stories we pay Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) rates of 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories\, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints.\nWe will aim to read each story and confirm its status within 4 months of the submission deadline.\nPayment for the chosen stories will be made within 30 days of the final advertised publication date (see our website flametreepublishing.com for details)\, although some may be paid earlier than that.\nSubmission does not imply the right to publication. Each story will be read and assessed by the selection panel.\nLet us know in your submission email whether your story would be a reprint or is currently unpublished.\n\nImportant Notice about Submissions and Guidelines\nWe’re always looking for better ways of working so we’ve tweaked our submission process to allow us to read more stories\, and spend more time assessing the balance of our books. So follow these rules to avoid your story getting lost in our system! \n\nSubmissions must use the dedicated email address.\nThe subject line of the email must be the story title.\nThe file with the story must be attached to the email (.docx\, .doc or .rtf format).\nThe name of the file must match the name in the subject line.\nIf submitting more than one story\, please submit one story per email.\n\nOther useful tips for a more successful submission:\n\n\nThe file name of the submission must be the story name only.\nPlease just use spaces between words in the title (not _ or – ).\nIf the story name starts with A or The\, please use it at the beginning of the file name.\nIf you’d like to add some details about the story\, confirm if it’s new or a reprint\, or add a short bio of yourself\, please add to the body of the email not as an attachment.\nStory length is most likely to be successful at 3\,000-4\,000 words\, but we will still read stories slightly outside this range.\nIf submitting a story that has recently been submitted to us for consideration to another anthology\, please state this in the submission email.

Explore what it means to feel empowered and grounded in your body—and what it means to feel betrayed by it. Have you ever lost your body to dissociation? Or perhaps to transcendence? The body is a site of self-love\, self-hate\, and body neutrality alike: accepting loving odes\, body horror\, and everything in between. \n\nSubmit your work through Submittable. We do not accept submissions via mail.\nSubmit only work that has not been previously published (in print or online).\nWe gladly accept simultaneous submissions. If another magazine accepts your work for publication\, please advise us and withdraw your piece immediately.\nWe do not charge for submissions\, with the exception of our annual contests\, which also come with a one-year print subscription.\nFiction and creative non-fiction: up to 3500 words\, double spaced.\nPoetry: up to 5 poems\, submitted in a single doc file\, with each poem starting on a new page.\nSubmit all work in 12-point font\, Times New Roman preferred.

SUMMARY:P - Magma Poetry Seeking Submissions about: Performance
DESCRIPTION:Performance\nAll the world’s a stage\, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts. – from Shakespeare’s As You Like It \nWhile broadly defined\, there are many unique layers to Magma 89’s theme of Performance. For instance\, there are gendered\, and erotic undertones. Hermann Hesse decried: \nHow much have you lied! A thousand times\, even in your poems and books\, you have played the harmonious man\, the wise man\, the happy\, the enlightened man… \nCan poems explore the rawness and fragility of that\, and the different anxieties and pressures that certain notions of performance bring? \nOr else\, when does playing a role\, or having a mask\, become erotically charged? Who are we performing for and why? What does it mean to put on a show? When is being seen and watched consensual or unsafe? \nOf course\, at first glance\, readers might think Magma’s Performance issue applies mainly to poets who have a specific style of poem or personality: slam poetry\, being in the ‘spotlight’. We welcome submissions that want to celebrate and experiment with that – in style\, content or form. \nOr they might want to challenge what performance means for poetry entirely. Is there a difference between ‘performance poetry’ and ‘other types’? What changes if poems are written specifically with the intention of connecting with a live audience? What about different kinds of artistic performance: from theatre to music to dance to circus? \nThese few lines by Shakespeare offer up questions not just for performers\, but for people too. How have poets wrestled with authenticity and pretence? When do we switch between roles\, contexts and identities? \nA final lingering question for us is this: if all the world’s a stage\, then where is the backstage? \nWhat happens when there’s no one to perform for\, when no one is watching\, when everybody has gone home? Who are we then? \nWe look forward to reading your poems. \nHOW TO SUBMIT \n\nThe submissions window for ‘Performance’ is open 4th December 2023 – 4th January 2024\nWe welcome poems that have not been previously published\, either in print or online.\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please withdraw your submission or contact us if it is accepted for publication somewhere else first.\nYou may submit up to 4 previously unpublished poems (poem + translation counts as one poem):\n\nONLINE via Submittable in a single Word or PDF document\,

SUMMARY:N - Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review Seeking Submissions on How to be at Home in Canada: Placemaking in Indigenous\, Diaspora\, and Settler Texts
DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers — How to be at Home in Canada: Placemaking in Indigenous\, Diaspora\, and Settler Texts\n  \n\nIn the landmark 1997 Delgamuukw land claim brought before the Supreme Court of Canada (Delgamuukw v. British Columbia)\, the Court ruled that traditional Indigenous story was admissible in court as evidence of land ownership\, legitimizing a kind of literary land claim. This special issue of Canadian Literature examines the way literary texts claim space and explore questions of belonging for Indigenous\, diaspora\, and settler populations. \nThe issue will consider narratives from communities in Canada that assert or contest relations between land\, story\, ownership and belonging—whether it be in rural or urban environments\, and in forms as varied as traditional Indigenous stories or hip hop’s practice of paying tribute to home through “reppin’.” Processes of claiming or challenging narratives of belonging are clearly different for Indigenous\, diaspora and settler populations\, since one consists of original inhabitants; another of immigrants with ties to elsewhere; and a third of settler populations who examine an uneasy colonial relationship to the land\, which ultimately contributes to either a sense of national belonging or alienation. Okanagan scholar\, author\, and activist Jeannette Armstrong writes\, “I am claimed and owned by this land\, this Okanagan” (174)\, and her poetry and prose embody that relationship. In Literary Land Claims (2015)\, settler scholar Margery Fee traces how texts use strategies to claim – or problematize the act of claiming – land\, story\, and belonging. How do other populations describe their belonging in territories claimed by Canada? \nBlack scholar Rinaldo Walcott\, in his essay “Towards a Poetics of Black Space(s) in Canada\,” signals the importance of such an undertaking: “It seems that one of the challenges facing contemporary Black Canadian art is to move beyond the discourse of nostalgia for an elsewhere and toward addressing the politics of its present location” (46-7). By centring the politics of the present\, this issue seeks to demonstrate the ways writers address the politics of place through literary land claims. Connecting community to place in the multiple national imaginaries both engenders and demonstrates belonging\, helping us redress systemic racism and assert the right to safe spaces. We will consider the politics of claiming stolen land\, and the ways that class\, race\, cultural practice\, gender\, sexuality\, and disability intersect into questions of territorial belonging\, nationhood\, and connection to place. \nAll papers examining space and place in relation to belonging in Canada are welcome\, in particular those examining questions of race\, cultural practice\, gender\, sexuality and disability. Papers dealing with “third space” or “liminal space” are also encouraged. \nWe particularly encourage submissions from emerging scholars. In an effort to include a wide range of perspectives and approaches\, this issue will include shorter-form submissions combined with longer forms\, and an opportunity for emerging scholars to engage in a mentorship process in implementing editorial comments after the double-anonymized peer-review process. \n\nEDIT: A previous version of the poster for this call includes a typo for the word “Indigenous.” Please note that the link to learn more still works\, but the title of the issue will feature the corrected spelling rather than the misspelling in the previous poster.\n\nSubmission Guidelines \nAll submissions to Canadian Literature must be original\, unpublished work. Essays should follow current MLA bibliographic format (MLA Handbook\, 9th ed.). Word length for articles is 4\,000-8\,000 words\, which includes endnotes and works cited. \nPlease feel free to contact the journal editor\, Christine Kim\, at cl.editor@ubc.ca\, or the special issue guest editors\, Heather Macfarlane (hcm1@queensu.ca)\, Sophie McCall (smccall@sfu.ca) or Basmah Rahman (13bsr@queensu.ca) to discuss ideas ahead of time. Submissions should be uploaded to OJS by the deadline of January 1\, 2024. Our Submission Guidelines can be found at canlit.ca/submissions. General questions about the special issue may be directed to can.lit@ubc.ca. \nPlease limit images accompanying the submission to those receiving substantial attention in the article. Note that contributors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce images in their article\, and must pay any permission costs. The journal can provide a sample template for permission requests. Permissions must be cleared before publication. Please send low resolution images (small jpegs)\, in separate attachments. If the article is accepted\, high quality images will be required.1/1/2024) Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review: How to be at Home in Canada: Placemaking in Indigenous\, Diaspora\, and Settler Texts (N)

SUMMARY:P - Poemeleon: A Journal of Poetry Seeking Happy Poems
DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: Happy Poems \nWhy is it so hard to write a happy poem? Correction: Why is it so hard to write a good happy poem? The lit world is rife with sadness\, anger\, depression\, horror\, fear\, rage\, outrage—the full range of negative emotions. This is of course a natural reaction to the news of the world and in fact just to the dailiness of living. And sure\, there are plenty of writers who bury their head in the sand and write nothing but shallow light verse. That’s not what we are looking for. (But feel free to submit anyway. Who knows?) \nWe instead propose an issue that finds something happy to latch on to\, some ray of hope beaming out from a crack in the steaming pile of dogshit that is the world. For this issue\, we want to see your version of a happy poem. The full range of happy. How do we acknowledge those things that bring us joy\, contentment\, or dare I say\, happiness\, even as the world burns down around us? \nInterpret this as you may. \nWould it make you happy to\, say\, see a certain politician shot from a cannon to the moon? Can you read the newspaper without crying and for a moment contemplate how lucky you are with your hot cup of coffee and someone you care about? Can we all breathe deeply and be in the moment and look for those things that make life worth living? \nHappiness is a complex emotion. Send us your happy poems\, whatever that means to you. Give yourself a brief respite from whatever is ailing you to write some happiness into your life. \nFor ease of acceptance/rejection\, you may submit as many times as you’d like but submit ONLY one poem at a time. \nPlease include a 50 word third-person bio. Cover letter optional. Also optional: If moved to do so\,  include a 50 word contributor statement about the work submitted. (See past issues for examples of what we mean.) \n

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Exposition Review. Theme: "Pop"
DESCRIPTION:Every issue has a theme from which writers and artists can draw inspiration. We encourage those who submit to think outside the box; we look for stories that fit the theme yet make us think about it in different ways; we want work that satisfies and challenges traditional forms of storytelling. \nThe theme for our ninth annual issue is “POP!” \nRead more about how to submit below! \nPOP!: \nWhether it’s a bang from a child squeezing a balloon too tightly\, the disgusting ooze of a burst pimple\, or a hit song that sets hips swaying\, “POP!” demands a reaction. \nIt conjures sweet and bubbly memories\, like popping beers and popcorn while rooting for pop flies at the ballpark—perhaps with your Pops. It describes music and art and culture\, as well as colors and flavors and comic-book sound effects. \nBut “POP!” can also pack a punch. Balloons pop when the air pressure inside becomes stronger than the material containing it—a violent return to equilibrium when force is unevenly distributed. \nFor Vol. IX\, we’re seeking that surprise inherent in a “POP!” and the conflict that arises from it\, characters and ideas that burst off the page\, in language that crackles and snaps. \nSubmissions for Vol. IX will be open September 15–December 31.\nAll work is read and given fair consideration by our editorial staff. Guidelines for individual genres are as follows: \n\nFiction. Short stories and stand-alone novel excerpts up to 5\,000 words.\nFlash Fiction. Up to three pieces of flash or microfiction. Each piece should be no more than 1\,000 words; there is no minimum word count. The shorter\, the better!\nNonfiction. Memoir\, personal essays\, and creative nonfiction up to 5\,000 words.\nPoetry. Up to three poems of any form and in traditional or experimental styles. Translations are accepted as well.

SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submissions to Friends Journal. Theme: "Prayer and Healing"
DESCRIPTION:Prayer and Healing\n\n\n\nEnds on Mon\, Dec 18\, 2023 11:59 PM \n\n\n\nOur March 2024 issue will look at prayer and healing. There are some historical traditions—George Fox’s long-suppressed Book of Miracles comes to mind—but also personal testimonies recounted in Quaker journals. There are stories of Friends who seemed to be able to sense unanswered prayers and respond to spiritually threatening situations out of a kind of instinct. There have been traditions of healing dating back at least to the time Fox reportedly brought someone back to life after a fall from a horse broke their neck. \nWhat do we moderns think of such tales? What is prayer and how does it work? Do we pray to or for something? What does it mean to hold someone in the Light and is that the same or different than prayer? \nMany Friends work in healing. We treat bodies as doctors and nurses\, treat minds as therapists\, and treat souls in pastoral work or as hospice workers. How does prayer and healing work in these settings? \nModern life has given us much that needs prayer and healing. How do we heal from gun violence? Domestic violence? What about from war and our seemingly constant witness of state-sponsored brutalities? How do we address the mental health\, especially of young people\, especially after the trauma of the pandemic and lockdown isolation? How do Friends use techniques\, such as art\, poetry\, or sacred chant for healing? More pragmatically\, how do meetings come together to provide pastoral and spiritual care for Friends and neighbors under distress? \nFast Facts \n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.\nSubmissions close December 18\, 2023.\nQuestions? Email editors@friendsjournal.org\n\nLearn more general information at Friendsjournal.org/submissions.

SUMMARY:N - Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Lesbian Studies\, Now
DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers: Lesbian Studies\, Now\n \nIn the contemporary cultural imagination\, lesbian feminism holds all of mid-twentieth-century feminism’s highest aspirations and its worst mistakes. The figure of the lesbian looms large in the ever-present nostalgia for second-wave feminism and the early years of women’s studies\, in eulogies to shuttered bars and bookstores\, and in the promises and perils of butch-femme couplings and gender aesthetics that have been hailed as the precursor to contemporary gender nonconformity. Such longings are often met with critique\, wherein lesbian separatism marks a supposedly quaint experiment that was ruined by its insistent whiteness and gender essentialism. \nFeminist scholarship mirrors this simultaneous disavowal and embrace of the lesbian. Lesbian studies is frequently offered as a question rather than a field of study\, so that feminist and queer theorists alike recursively ask: whither lesbian studies? And yet\, lesbian feminist studies are encountering a kind of revival: at the cutting edge of feminist theoretical\, historical\, ethnographic\, and social scientific scholarship is work that centers lesbian literary and cultural productions\, spaces\, aesthetics and icons\, relationships and kinship formations\, and historical epochs in feminist history. Lesbian feminist theory remains at the core of feminist theory curricula; lesbian feminists remain at the heart of feminist action across geography and period; and scholarly work about lesbians proliferates in and across the disciplines. \nWe understand the struggle to articulate a shared vision of lesbian feminism and lesbian feminist theory as a sign of the vitality of lesbian political life and of the continued urgency of feminism as a tool to confront the cataclysmic realities of the present. Whereas women’s and gender studies has recently embraced rage as a distinctly feminist affect\, we suggest confrontation as the heart of lesbian affective life\, culture\, and strategy. We use this special issue to stage and unfold the debates that mark the field as active\, contested\, and very much alive. \nWe invite rigorously interdisciplinary submissions on gender nonconformity\, family-building\, aesthetics\, performance and cultural production\, political actors and political ideologies\, academic feminisms and institutional life\, languages and literatures\, lesbian presences across feminist and queer historical epochs\, humor\, erotics\, nostalgia\, grief\, trans* lesbianisms\, domesticity\, dramas\, infighting\, limitations\, and revolutionary fervor. Submissions may address these and other questions: \n\nWhat is at stake in claiming “lesbian” as an identity\, as a politics\, and/or as an analytic? How does the figure of “the lesbian” circulate in debates about identity?\nWhat is the work of mourning\, grief\, nostalgia\, and disavowal with respect to the figure of the lesbian in feminist history and theory?\nHow does lesbian—as an analytic\, a theory\, a way of being—figure\, or what tools does lesbian offer\, in a post-Roe world? In the twilight of American empire? In the context of climate apocalypse? In the ongoing threat of viral pandemics?\nWhat strategies do histories of lesbian lifeways and/or new modes of lesbian living provide for thinking survival\, resistance\, and revolution?\nWhat pressure or insight does lesbian studies exert\, or what insights does it offer\, in relationship to disability studies? Black/ethnic studies? Trans* studies? Where does lesbian studies live within the academy?\nWhat promises\, delights\, surprises\, and investments attach to the lesbian today\, and how might we harness these affective intensities? In other words\, what does/can lesbian feminism do\, now?\n\nSigns particularly encourages transdisciplinary and transnational essays that address substantive feminist questions\, debates\, and controversies without employing disciplinary or academic jargon. We seek essays that are passionate\, strongly argued\, and willing to take risks. \nPlease submit full manuscripts electronically through Signs’s Editorial Manager system at http://signs.edmgr.com. Manuscripts must conform to the guidelines for submission available at http://signsjournal.org/for-authors/author-guidelines/.
