SUMMARY:N - Queer Adventurers LGBTQIA Writing Contest 2023. Theme: "Firsts"
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for 1\,000 to 1\,500 word personal essays on the theme of Firsts. \nSpecifically\, we’re looking to hear a true first-person story of the first time you tried an outdoor activity and how it went. \nTrying something new outdoors builds skills and breaks us out of routine. It can lead to new friendships\, confidence\, and growth. \nLike that time I got lost in a Florida swamp and had to call 911 to get rescued\, it can also go spectacularly wrong! \nStories of the good\, the bad and the never-doing-that-again kind are all welcome! \nAll submissions must connect to the chosen theme and center your LGBTQIA identity. This means more than a passing mention of a sexuality or gender identity. We want to see LGBTQIA identities woven into the stories. \nAll submissions must come from an LGBTQIA author. \nAt Queer Adventurers\, we take an expansive definition of outdoor adventures. We love hardcore stories of multi-day trips and treks. We also appreciate the gentler activities: urban nature walks\, birding\, garden tours. We believe spending time in nature is healing\, regardless of the level of activity it involves. We’re deeply excited to hear your stories of LGBTQ travel firsts. \nEligibility: \nThis LGBTQ+ writing contest accepts submissions from writers anywhere in the world aged 18+. Stories must be previously unpublished. Stories that were previously published on a blog\, Instagram\, etc. are ineligible. Stories must be in English. \nOne submission per writer is allowed\, thanks! Submissions that exceed this work count will be deemed ineligible\, as will multiple submissions from a single writer. \nPrizes\nThe winning writer will receive a $150 cash prize\, payable via PayPal or Venmo.\nOne runner-up will receive a $50 cash prize\, payable via PayPal or Venmo.\nWinning and longlisted writers will have their essays published in Queer Adventurers.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to bath magg
DESCRIPTION:Submissions\n\nWe publish three times a year: in April for the Spring Issue\, August for the Summer Issue\, and December for the Winter Issue. Our submission windows are as follows: \nFebruary 1 – 29 for Spring Issue\nJune 1 – 30 for Summer Issue\nOctober 1 – 31 for Winter Issue \nPlease send no more than three poems as a word document to: bathmagg@gmail.com with the subject line ‘SUBMISSION’. Poems must be previously unpublished. Please include a short biographical note in the body of your email. Please create a new email thread for each submission (i.e.: if you’ve submitted to us before\, please don’t reply to a previous submission’s email thread). Poems submitted outside of the submission window will not be read. \nWe no longer accept simultaneous submissions. i.e.: please don’t send us work that is being considered elsewhere. We are a very small team\, with just the one inbox. We believe our turnaround time of five weeks from the close of the submission window is fair (and even quick) all things considered. \nWe have no restriction on theme or length but for long poems or sequences we suggest no more than three A4 pages. \nWe aim to respond to all submissions within five weeks from the close of the submission window. \nWe currently do not offer payment for poems (although we hope this might change soon). bath magg is run by a tiny team of volunteers\, so\, for now\, all we can offer is our love.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Parliament Literary Journal Seeking Submissions. Theme: "Secrets"
DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions\n\n\nHello my Owls\, \n \nEven though\, as I type this now\, the weather outside has hit near-record high temperatures and the added humidity has us stripped to the bare essential (we’re modest-ish)\, I’ve got Winter on my mind. I’m imagining what\, when the weather turns beyond the invigorating crisp of autumn into the shocking grips of the winter’s air\, what I’d like to be cozied up with. In selecting the theme for our Winter 2024 issue\, I envisaged myself under blankets\, curled into the nooks of someone equally soft and strong against me\, hot tea at the ready\, and reading . . . what exactly? What does Winter bring? \n \nAnd I thought: There’s something hushed about Winter\, voices muffled under layers\, our words bound closer to us. We don’t spill out the door as quickly or even as often as we do in the warmer weather. There is an alone-ness to the Winter not found in other seasons\, as we turn inside our homes and inside ourselves; hibernating with our thoughts… and our SECRETS. \n \nFor our Winter 2024 issue\, I invite you to join me in (metaphorically) opening the windows and shouting into the bitter air that awaits us SECRETS.   \n \nYou are invited to interpret this theme creatively. Create uniquely. Submit your most unusual and beautiful. \n \nShare your secrets.

SUMMARY:F - Every Day Fiction Seeking November Stories
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for some suitable stories for November 2023\, including: \n\nAll Saints Day\nAll Souls Day / Dia De Los Muertos\nSadie Hawkins Day\nGuy Fawkes Day\nRemembrance Day / Veterans Day\nWorld Kindness Day\nChildren’s Day\nAmerican Thanksgiving\nBlack Friday\nRed Planet Day\nany stories specifically featuring the month of November\, late autumn or early winter.\n\nThe deadline for these stories is October 27\, 2023\, at the end of the day (11:59 PM Pacific Time). \nGuidelines \nEvery Day Fiction is looking for very short (flash) fiction\, of up to 1000 words. There’s no such thing as too short — if you can do the job in 50 words\, have at it! — but our readers prefer pieces that tell or at least hint at a complete story (some sort of action or tension rising to a moment of climax\, and at least a clue toward a resolution\, though it doesn’t have to be all spelled out). \nAll fiction genres are acceptable\, and stories that don’t fit neatly into any genre are welcome too. While personal experiences and other non-fiction can be great sources of inspiration\, please turn them into fiction for us\, or send them elsewhere. \nOur readership is adult\, so children’s stories are unlikely to be accepted unless they are relevant to adults as well. On the other hand\, we are not impressed by gratuitous sex and violence\, or pointlessly foul language; edgy content should be necessary and appropriate to the plot and characters. Please consider that our readers may be at work or enjoying our stories over a meal\, so we tend to avoid explicit erotica and stomach-churning gore. \nIt ought to go without saying that any story submitted to Every Day Fiction must be your own unpublished original creation. If you publish a story on a blog\, even your own personal blog\, or any website accessible to the general public (i.e.\, if the story can be found and read online without a password or friend status or other limitation)\, it is considered published and therefore inappropriate for our market. \nSince we do not have the time or resources to manage copyright permissions\, please do not send us works with quoted song lyrics. You may use song titles and the names of composers\, lyricists\, and/or performers\, and you may paraphrase or refer to the song lyrics\, but we are unable to publish stories with directly quoted song lyrics unless they are in the public domain (written before 1920). \nWe will not publish stories which feature living public figures as characters\, although referencing them (e.g.\, in terms of a concert/event/sighting) is acceptable. Historical/deceased public figures are acceptable as characters. We do not publish fan fiction and will not publish stories which feature non-original characters\, although referencing them (e.g.\, in a film\, as a toy\, etc.) is fine\, and historical/cultural/legendary characters which are clearly not the property of a single creator (e.g.\, Santa Claus\, King Arthur) are also permissible. \nAll stories must be submitted through Submittable — we cannot accept stories via email or snail mail.

SUMMARY:PN - Friends Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Forgiveness"
DESCRIPTION:We prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought. Our readers particularly value articles on: exploring Friends’ testimonies and beliefs; integrating faith\, work\, and home lives; historical and contemporary Friends; social concerns and actions; and the variety of beliefs across the branches of Friends. \nFriends Journal prefers articles with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. Submissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them. \nWhat does it mean to forgive? Are there any preconditions? Any limitations? What does forgiveness do to us and to the forgiven? \nFeatures run 1200-2500 words \nLearn more general information at Friendsjournal.org/submissions.https://friendsjournal.submittable.com/submit/214030/jan-2024-forgiveness \n\n\nPoetry\n\n\n\n\n\nWe generally publish 2–3 poems in each issue. Please use this form for all poetry\, even poems that might be intended for specific issues. \nWe publish poems that use image and metaphor to recreate an experience for the reader—which show rather than tell\, “be” rather than mean. The subject matter should show an awareness of Friends ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them\, although the poet need not be a Friend. We prefer poems that are short\, have titles\, are adequately punctuated\, use words sparingly\, and are written in form. \nPlease submit a maximum of three poems at any given time; we prefer that each is uploaded individually. \nWe welcome submissions from Friends and non-Friends alike. While we’re casting a wide net\, we’re not the right market for erotica or extreme horror. We are also not a market for fan fiction or other works that use other folks’ intellectual property. We are a queer-affirming publication and will not be accepting any work based in homophobia\, transphobia\, or general racism\, sexism\, bigotry\, or fascism.

SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submisions to Bad Day Book. Theme: "On Vacation"
DESCRIPTION:No matter how you look at it\, some days are just bad days. Often times you are able to look back on those days and laugh about what happened. The Bad Day Book is here to help you take a step back and realize one day you may laugh about what is happening. Or\, it might even help you realize that compared to others\, maybe it isn’t really as bad of a day as you thought. \nWhat are the rules for story and poem submissions? \n\nStories should be about bad things\, but that are still funny. We are not looking to include tragic or heart breaking stories. This book is to get others to laugh\, gasp\, and cringe.\nStories MUST be personal and true events that have already happened. No AI bot stories. No creative writing. No fiction.\nWe prefer stories under 1200 words. We will consider works up to 1500 words\, but it is rare to have works picked that are over the preferred 1200.\nStories should be written with first person narration and told in past tense.\nDo not include any vulgarity\, controversial topics\, politics\, sex/drugs\, drinking\, illegal activities\, curse/crass/crude words. This is a family friendly publication.\nThough many bad days are caused by a “villain”\, whether it be a person/company\, do not name drop or tear down others. Focus the story on what happens directly to you and not the people on the other end. We will not publish works that are written to tear others down\, even if they have done shady stuff. You may refer to others as friends\, coworkers\, family member\, pen names or a vague descriptor.\nStories should include a beginning\, middle\, and an end. Begin straight in the action; no introductions to the story are necessary. Make sure you conclude your story\, but please do not end the story with any recap. It’s always best to end with a laugh.\nOnly submit a story once to each theme you would like it considered for. (Stories submitted more than once per theme will be deleted.)\nPoems must tell a story.\nWe do not pay for submissions\, only for published works.\nWe do not accept all submitted stories and poems to be published. Though not all submissions will be published in books\, some will be accepted for social media publication.\nIf your story or poem is selected to be published in one of our books or social media\, you will be asked to sign a permission release contract. The contract will allow The Bad Day Book rights to publish your story.\n\nYou maintain copyright under your name\nLicense will grant The Bad Day Book exclusive rights for 12 months\, with permission to use story in later editions as well. (Not exclusively-Written permission from author will be required for other uses)\nAfter the 12 months author may self-publish in any form (book\, blog\, etc) without making any changes to story or referencing The Bad Day Book.\nAfter 12 months author may publish with any third-party any rewritten variation of this story/life experience. No reference to The Bad Day Book required.\n\n\nPlease do not contact us to ask for an update about your story unless you need to know whether we are considering it because another publisher is interested in it too.\nIf your story or poem is not selected for any of the variations you have requested\, you will be notified if we would like to hold the submission for a different book edition or if The Bad Day Book with be passing on your story or poem.\nWe will not consider previous published stories or poems\, with one exception being previously published stories or poem from personal blog publications.\nAuthor name can be shown as first name only\, first and last name\, or a pen name if you would prefer to not use your real name\n\nIf you have already submitted a story or poem and are looking to change any story details or contact information please email mystory@thbaddaybook.com \nWe do not pay for submissions. We only pay for stories and poems that are published in books or on social media.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Pangyrus Lit Mag. Theme: "Left Unsaid"
DESCRIPTION:Pangyrus publishes well-crafted\, thought-provoking essays\, poems\, and stories online and in two print editions each year (one anthology and one specialty book). We welcome work in any genre and on all topics. \nSome of the work we accept will appear in our 12th print issue (Winter 2024-2025)! The theme for the issue is “Left unsaid.” We like the phrase’s suggestion of mystery\, innuendo\, high stakes\, emotional conflict\, and the limits of words. Sometimes what’s left unsaid is the cause of pain\, sometimes it’s a source of power. \nAlong with general submissions — on the theme of “Left unsaid” or not — we are interested in a few specific categories: Zest! (food writing); In Sickness and In Health (health\, the body\, and society); Field Notes (science and the environment); Schooled (education); Generations (family life\, parenting\, relationships); and The Sounding Board (artful takes on politics and international affairs). For full descriptions of these categories please visit this section of our Submittable page. We encourage you to read us at pangyrus.com to get a sense of what we’re looking for. \nIf you think our readers will find it entertaining and compelling\, send it our way. We read every submission that we get with fresh eyes and open minds. Accepted work will appear online. Only some work will appear in our print editions. All authors of accepted work will receive a payment of $20 via PayPal or they may choose to donate the payment back to Pangyrus. \nAll submitted work must be wholly original and previously unpublished. Please DO NOT send revisions of your work after you’ve submitted it. \nPoetry \nWe are interested in showing the range of poetry that exists in the contemporary moment. First and foremost\, we publish poetry in a wide range of styles and voices that moves us deeply and has us see the world in a new way. Please send a maximum of 3 poems contained within a single document. Because our volume of submissions is high\, we ask that you submit only once per reading period. \nFiction \nWe are looking for well-crafted\, thought-provoking fiction. Stories that are original\, passionate\, and surprising\, with strong narratives and an implicit understanding of people interacting with each other win us over. The tastes of our editorial team are far-ranging and eclectic. We welcome any and all work that displays the rare gift of storytelling\, that pulls our readers into the narrative and holds them there until the end. New voices and diverse voices are also a keen interest of ours. \nWord count: Submissions should be a maximum of 7\,500 words. Because our volume of submissions is high\, we ask that you send only one submission per reading period. Please\, no previously published work. \nNonfiction \nWe are looking for high-quality nonfiction writing that connects exciting ideas\, tells a compelling story\, and offers a fresh perspective. We favor two kinds of submissions: short\, focused essays between 600 and 1500 words\, and longer\, more reported features of up to 7\,500 words. Please send only one selection at a time.

SUMMARY:PFN - Arboreal Literary Magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Fresh Hell"
DESCRIPTION:Issue No. 04 Theme: Fresh Hell\nThe theme for our fourth issue\, Fresh Hell\, comes from a famous quotation attributed to wisecracking American satirist Dorothy Parker: \n\n\n\n\n\n[Parker’s] way of looking at life was incurably pessimistic. Confronted by the unknown\, she immediately prepared for the worst. Ordinary occurrences—the doorbell or a ringing telephone—made her wonder “What fresh hell is this?” \nMarion Meade\, Dorothy Parker: What Fresh Hell Is This? (1988)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe phrase “fresh hell” embodies the intersection of humor and despair in the face of life’s twists and turns. We invite you to respond to this theme by responding to the tumultuous and unpredictable facets of human experience—personal\, social\, cultural\, global\, or otherwise. \nThis might mean delving into intimate encounters with life’s daily challenges. Or dissecting the absurdities of our world\, casting a light on its more comically tragic elements. Maybe you have a pessimistic satirical take on life’s inherent chaos. Or perhaps your work explores personal growth our of the depths of fresh hells. \nAs always\, these are merely suggestions to get you thinking about the theme. Indeed\, we always appreciate thematic angles we haven’t considered! \n\n\nPoetry\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit poetry submissions to 4 poems.\nWe do not accept translations.\nAll poems should be included in a single document\, each poem starting on a separate page.\n\n\n\nFiction\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit fiction submissions to a single short story of no more than 4\,000 words.\n\n\n\nNonfiction\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit nonfiction submissions to a single essay of no more than 4\,000 words.

SUMMARY:PFN - Caustic Frolic Seeking Submissions on the Theme: CODA
DESCRIPTION:Call for Creative Works on the Theme ‘Coda’ – Fall 2023 Issue\n\n\nCaustic Frolic is excited to announce our call for submissions for the Fall 2023 issue\, centered around the theme of ‘Coda.’ A ‘coda’ is the final movement\, the closing statement\, the concluding brushstroke. Just as a musical composition finds its resolution in a coda\, we invite you to explore the art of resolution\, conclusion\, and the lingering resonance of ideas. \nIn music\, a coda serves as the grand finale\, bringing together the themes that have danced throughout the composition. Similarly\, we seek your fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry that embody the essence of coda.  Whether it’s the final chapter of a story or the last lines of a poem\, we’re eager to experience your interpretation of this powerful theme. \nAt Caustic Frolic\, we’re passionate about pushing creative boundaries. In this issue\, we encourage you to deconstruct and redefine the notion of coda. How can the conclusion be a new beginning? Explore innovative methods of crafting closure\, and let your creative expression find its ultimate resolution. \nSubmission Requirements: \n\nThe submission window for the Fall 2023 ‘Coda’ issue is from September 10 to October 15\, 2023\, ending at 11:59 PM EST.\nTo submit\, please send your cover letter WITHIN the body of your email\, which includes:\n\nYour name\, telephone number\, and email address\nA short bio (up to 150 words)\nSocial media handles you’d like to include (beside each handle\, indicate “YES” if you allow your work to be featured on our social media\, or “NO” if you prefer not to).\n\n\nDo not include any identifying information in your submission document(s). All submissions are evaluated anonymously. Identifying details should only appear in your cover letter.\nSubmissions should not exceed 6\,000 words.\nEssays should be formatted following the Chicago Manual of Style\, 16th edition; please use endnotes\, double-spaced\, on a separate page after the main text.\nAll fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry submissions must be in .docx file format.\nTranslation submissions must accompany the source language text and a note from the original author granting permission to publish the translation.\nWe accept up to 5 pieces per author\, but each submission should be attached individually.\n\nSend all submissions to causticfrolic@gmail.com. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Griffith Review on the Theme: "Past Perfect"
DESCRIPTION:Griffith Review 83: Past Perfect\nThe past\, famously\, is a foreign country – but in the twenty-first century\, it’s one in which we increasingly seek solace. \nNo matter the relentless pace of technological innovation and the digitisation of everything from money to media – our appetites for retro design and aesthetics\, for cultural products that reimagine technicolour-dream versions of decades gone by\, or for fantasies of a past golden political age are ever on the rise. \nBut what fuels this love affair with recycling our history? What periods do we choose to romanticise\, and how do our rose-tinted glasses occlude reality? Is all this nostalgia signifying – as the late Mark Fisher opined – ‘the slow cancellation of the future’? \nThis edition of Griffith Review surveys our need to idealise\, sensationalise and glamorise – and asks what the circular nature of our obsessions says about our present cultural moment. \nSubmissions open rom fMonday 4 September to Sunday 15 October.\nThings for you to note:\n* We’re looking for non-fiction and fiction that responds to the theme.\n* We’d prefer pieces that are no longer than 4\,000 words (they can\, of course\, be much shorter than this).\n* Attention poets! We’ll be opening a separate poetry call-out on 23 October – keep an eye on our social media and newsletter for more details soon.\n* We’ll let you know the outcome of your submission within eight weeks of the call-out closing date.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Fathom Magazine. Theme: "Gentleness"
DESCRIPTION:Want to write for Fathom? We’d love to hear from you. First\, it’s best if you become familiar with the type of content we publish. Then\, read our style guide for a checklist of what we are looking for in your writing. \nAt Fathom we publish articles\, personal essays\, profiles\, interviews\, book reviews\, Bible exposition\, theological and/or historical analysis\, poetry\, and short stories. The work we prefer often utilizes personal narrative to communicate the deeper aspects of the Christian faith and to draw our readers into the nuance surrounding an idea. We love writing that examines the unexplored angle and delivers a well-told story. \nWe suggest familiarizing yourself with our publication before submitting your work. Scanning through past issues of Fathom will give you an idea of the tone\, voice\, and approach we tend to take. And looking through our most recent issues will show you what our contributors have recently covered and how you can add to — not repeat — the ideas already in our publication. \nOur audience is made up of thoughtful\, curious Christians who desire to craft a multi-faceted life of faith. They typically want to engage their minds\, connect with artful expression\, and consider a new perspective or experience. \nWe aim to publish pieces that challenge our audience’s expectations\, enthrall our readers with a story\, and put together strands of thinking our readers haven’t thought to combine. We want to give all people who make their way to Fathom a reason to engage their minds and their emotions. \nSpecs\nOur standard articles fall between 1\,000 and 1\,600 words. Short stories should be at least 3\,000 words. Poems vary in length and style. \nIn the case of poetry\, please send the completed poem.  Poems vary in length and style.

SUMMARY:F - The Last Line Literary Journal Seeking Submissions Ending with the Line: "Samir was never one to back down from a challenge"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2022 \nFiction: All stories must end with the last line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile).\n \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our last line to a story that they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our last line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our last lines. Also\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nAll Stories: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple stories for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories in the same issue. \nSubmissions: We prefer you send manuscripts via email to submission (@) thelastlinejournal (dot) com. We accept stories in MS Word or Word Perfect format (we prefer attachments). Please do not send .pdf versions of your story. Make sure your name and contact information\, as well as your bio\, are part of the attachment. Stories also can be sent to The Last Line‘s post office box (PO Box 250382\, Plano\, TX\, 75025-0382). No manuscripts will be returned without an accompanying SASE with sufficient return postage. The 2023 last line is: \nSamir was never one to back down from a challenge.\nDue date: October 1\, 2023 \nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices to everyone who submitted within three to four weeks after the issue’s deadline. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $20.00 – $40.00 for fiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time. \n(Note to our international writers: Postage cost for sending author copies overseas is becoming outrageous\, so we are reducing international author payment by the amount it would cost to send one author copy overseas. However\, if you would like to receive an electronic version of the issue [PDF] instead of a hard copy\, author payment will not be changed.)
