SUMMARY:PFN - Arboreal Literary Magazine Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Fresh Hell"
DESCRIPTION:Issue No. 04 Theme: Fresh Hell\nThe theme for our fourth issue\, Fresh Hell\, comes from a famous quotation attributed to wisecracking American satirist Dorothy Parker: \n\n\n\n\n\n[Parker’s] way of looking at life was incurably pessimistic. Confronted by the unknown\, she immediately prepared for the worst. Ordinary occurrences—the doorbell or a ringing telephone—made her wonder “What fresh hell is this?” \nMarion Meade\, Dorothy Parker: What Fresh Hell Is This? (1988)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe phrase “fresh hell” embodies the intersection of humor and despair in the face of life’s twists and turns. We invite you to respond to this theme by responding to the tumultuous and unpredictable facets of human experience—personal\, social\, cultural\, global\, or otherwise. \nThis might mean delving into intimate encounters with life’s daily challenges. Or dissecting the absurdities of our world\, casting a light on its more comically tragic elements. Maybe you have a pessimistic satirical take on life’s inherent chaos. Or perhaps your work explores personal growth our of the depths of fresh hells. \nAs always\, these are merely suggestions to get you thinking about the theme. Indeed\, we always appreciate thematic angles we haven’t considered! \n\n\nPoetry\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit poetry submissions to 4 poems.\nWe do not accept translations.\nAll poems should be included in a single document\, each poem starting on a separate page.\n\n\n\nFiction\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit fiction submissions to a single short story of no more than 4\,000 words.\n\n\n\nNonfiction\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease limit nonfiction submissions to a single essay of no more than 4\,000 words.

SUMMARY:PFN - Caustic Frolic Seeking Submissions on the Theme: CODA
DESCRIPTION:Call for Creative Works on the Theme ‘Coda’ – Fall 2023 Issue\n\n\nCaustic Frolic is excited to announce our call for submissions for the Fall 2023 issue\, centered around the theme of ‘Coda.’ A ‘coda’ is the final movement\, the closing statement\, the concluding brushstroke. Just as a musical composition finds its resolution in a coda\, we invite you to explore the art of resolution\, conclusion\, and the lingering resonance of ideas. \nIn music\, a coda serves as the grand finale\, bringing together the themes that have danced throughout the composition. Similarly\, we seek your fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry that embody the essence of coda.  Whether it’s the final chapter of a story or the last lines of a poem\, we’re eager to experience your interpretation of this powerful theme. \nAt Caustic Frolic\, we’re passionate about pushing creative boundaries. In this issue\, we encourage you to deconstruct and redefine the notion of coda. How can the conclusion be a new beginning? Explore innovative methods of crafting closure\, and let your creative expression find its ultimate resolution. \nSubmission Requirements: \n\nThe submission window for the Fall 2023 ‘Coda’ issue is from September 10 to October 15\, 2023\, ending at 11:59 PM EST.\nTo submit\, please send your cover letter WITHIN the body of your email\, which includes:\n\nYour name\, telephone number\, and email address\nA short bio (up to 150 words)\nSocial media handles you’d like to include (beside each handle\, indicate “YES” if you allow your work to be featured on our social media\, or “NO” if you prefer not to).\n\n\nDo not include any identifying information in your submission document(s). SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Griffith Review on the Theme: "Past Perfect"
DESCRIPTION:Griffith Review 83: Past Perfect\nThe past\, famously\, is a foreign country – but in the twenty-first century\, it’s one in which we increasingly seek solace. \nNo matter the relentless pace of technological innovation and the digitisation of everything from money to media – our appetites for retro design and aesthetics\, for cultural products that reimagine technicolour-dream versions of decades gone by\, or for fantasies of a past golden political age are ever on the rise. \nBut what fuels this love affair with recycling our history? What periods do we choose to romanticise\, and how do our rose-tinted glasses occlude reality? Is all this nostalgia signifying – as the late Mark Fisher opined – ‘the slow cancellation of the future’? \nThis edition of Griffith Review surveys our need to idealise\, sensationalise and glamorise – and asks what the circular nature of our obsessions says about our present cultural moment. \nSubmissions open rom fMonday 4 September to Sunday 15 October.\nThings for you to note:\n* We’re looking for non-fiction and fiction that responds to the theme.\n* We’d prefer pieces that are no longer than 4\,000 words (they can\, of course\, be much shorter than this).\n* Attention poets! We’ll be opening a separate poetry call-out on 23 October – keep an eye on our social media and newsletter for more details soon.\n* We’ll let you know the outcome of your submission within eight weeks of the call-out closing date.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Fathom Magazine. Theme: "Gentleness"
DESCRIPTION:Want to write for Fathom? We’d love to hear from you. First\, it’s best if you become familiar with the type of content we publish. Then\, read our style guide for a checklist of what we are looking for in your writing. \nAt Fathom we publish articles\, personal essays\, profiles\, interviews\, book reviews\, Bible exposition\, theological and/or historical analysis\, poetry\, and short stories. The work we prefer often utilizes personal narrative to communicate the deeper aspects of the Christian faith and to draw our readers into the nuance surrounding an idea. We love writing that examines the unexplored angle and delivers a well-told story. \nWe suggest familiarizing yourself with our publication before submitting your work. Scanning through past issues of Fathom will give you an idea of the tone\, voice\, and approach we tend to take. And looking through our most recent issues will show you what our contributors have recently covered and how you can add to — not repeat — the ideas already in our publication. \nOur audience is made up of thoughtful\, curious Christians who desire to craft a multi-faceted life of faith. They typically want to engage their minds\, connect with artful expression\, and consider a new perspective or experience. \nWe aim to publish pieces that challenge our audience’s expectations\, enthrall our readers with a story\, and put together strands of thinking our readers haven’t thought to combine. We want to give all people who make their way to Fathom a reason to engage their minds and their emotions. \nSpecs\nOur standard articles fall between 1\,000 and 1\,600 words. Short stories should be at least 3\,000 words. Poems vary in length and style. \nIn the case of poetry\, please send the completed poem.  Poems vary in length and style.

SUMMARY:F - The Last Line Literary Journal Seeking Submissions Ending with the Line: "Samir was never one to back down from a challenge"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2022 \nFiction: All stories must end with the last line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile).\n \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our last line to a story that they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our last line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our last lines. Also\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nAll Stories: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple stories for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories in the same issue. \nSubmissions: We prefer you send manuscripts via email to submission (@) thelastlinejournal (dot) com. We accept stories in MS Word or Word Perfect format (we prefer attachments). Please do not send .pdf versions of your story. Make sure your name and contact information\, as well as your bio\, are part of the attachment. Stories also can be sent to The Last Line‘s post office box (PO Box 250382\, Plano\, TX\, 75025-0382). No manuscripts will be returned without an accompanying SASE with sufficient return postage. The 2023 last line is: \nSamir was never one to back down from a challenge.\nDue date: October 1\, 2023 \nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices to everyone who submitted within three to four weeks after the issue’s deadline. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $20.00 – $40.00 for fiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time. \n(Note to our international writers: Postage cost for sending author copies overseas is becoming outrageous\, so we are reducing international author payment by the amount it would cost to send one author copy overseas. However\, if you would like to receive an electronic version of the issue [PDF] instead of a hard copy\, author payment will not be changed.)

In other words\, if you are a cis man\, please refrain from submitting. \nIn the US\, November tends to be the month where we talk about thankfulness. But let’s be honest\, Thanksgiving is a holiday with colonialist undertones that is getting harder and harder to celebrate\, at least in its traditional narrative. So let’s talk about things we should be thankful for\, but just aren’t. Or the things people expected us to be thankful for that we simply think\, “Um\, what?” Give us the rude\, the harsh\, the enduring\, the funny. The things that made you say\, “Thanks\, I guess.”\n** HerStry is always happy to share stories anonymously—if your story is selected for publication\, simply let your editor know you would not like your name shared **\nThe Rules: \n\nAll stories must be true and about you.\nStories must follow the theme in some way\, interpretations can be wide.\nStories must stay between 500–3\,000 words.\nDocuments should be double spaced\, 12Pt font with 1 inch margins.\nSubmissions must be in .doc or .docx form—we do not accept PDFs.\nPlease do not put your name on your manuscript. We realize in personal essays\, the author’s name often comes up\, so just use your best discretion.\nPlease include a third person bio. Cover letters are fine\, but not necessary (we don’t read them\, we’re more interested in what you’ve written).\nPlease submit only once per theme.\nWe do not accept previously published stories.\n\nHerStry centers the experiences of women identifying persons. SUMMARY:PN - Friend Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme of "Forgiveness"
DESCRIPTION:We prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought. Our readers particularly value articles on: exploring Friends’ testimonies and beliefs; integrating faith\, work\, and home lives; historical and contemporary Friends; social concerns and actions; and the variety of beliefs across the branches of Friends. \nFriends Journal prefers articles with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. Submissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them. \nWhat does it mean to forgive? Are there any preconditions? Any limitations? What does forgiveness do to us and to the forgiven? \nFeatures run 1200-2500 words. Learn more general information at Friendsjournal.org/submissions. \n\n\nPoetry\n\n\n\n\n\nWe generally publish 2–3 poems in each issue. Please use this form for all poetry\, even poems that might be intended for specific issues. \nWe publish poems that use image and metaphor to recreate an experience for the reader—which show rather than tell\, “be” rather than mean. The subject matter should show an awareness of Friends ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them\, although the poet need not be a Friend. We prefer poems that are short\, have titles\, are adequately punctuated\, use words sparingly\, and are written in form. \nPlease submit a maximum of three poems at any given time; we prefer that each is uploaded individually.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Reckoning: creative writing on environmental justice: "All of this\, right now"
DESCRIPTION:Reckoning 8 Submission Call\nFor Reckoning 8\, we want thinking and writing about … this. All of this\, right now. We want to hear about active resistance to the patriarchofascist\, corporate-captured extractive state. Show us what it means that in order to build Cop City*\, a massive facility intended to train a new generation of lethal enforcers into an institution directly descended from slave patrols\, the state of Georgia and its actors must first level a forest and label protestors “domestic terrorists” as a precursor to murdering them. Help us understand how strategies of repression and control all over the world concentrate agency in the hands of the few at the expense of all other life. We are looking for work in opposition to a broad\, insidious fascism that treats water\, trees\, and bodies as exploitable\, expendable resources rather than sacred\, essential components of our global\, infinitely interconnected and interdependent web of life. \nWe are always seeking work from Indigenous writers and artists\, racialized writers and artists\, queer\, trans and/or disabled writers and artists\, and anyone\, anywhere in the world\, who has suffered the consequences\, intended or otherwise\, of dominant society’s systemic disconnect with and mistreatment of the natural world. And we’re seeking new ways to reach all of the above. Seriously\, if you know of a way we can do that\, please share. \nWe don’t publish ecofascism or work we perceive to be prejudiced in any form\, including sexism\, racism\, ableism\, ageism. We reserve the right to point it out—respectfully—when we see it\, though we’re as prone to mistakes and misunderstanding as anyone else. Here’s a start on a list of what else doesn’t work for us. \n\nPoetry\n\n\nOur interests in poetry tend towards the narrative\, preferably with some thematic heft. We’re open to long poems\, short poems\, hybrid art/poetry\, and all kinds of formalism.  Length: 0 – 10 pages (query for longer). Payment: $50 (US)/page. \n\n\nFiction\n\n\nThe fiction we publish is mostly\, but not exclusively\, speculative. We appreciate surreal and experimental pieces as well as strong plotting\, but prefer writing that doesn’t lean too far into pulp. Length: 0 – 20\,000 words (query for longer). Payment: 10 cents (US)/word. \n\nCreative Nonfiction\n\n\nThe essays we publish tend to be more creative than journalistic; we like at least a bit of narrative with our information. Length: 0 – 20\,000 words (query for longer). Payment: 10 cents (US)/word. \n\n\nDeadline for Reckoning 8 is the solar equinox\, September 22\, 2023.

SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submissions to Friends Journal. Theme: "Stewardship as a Testimony"
DESCRIPTION:In Genesis 2:15 it is said that God put us “into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Modern Friends have leaned into the idea of stewardship\, most commonly in the context of earthcare and climate activism. \nThere’s the macro level\, where some of us lobby pressure on businesses and governments to adopt sustainable policies that address the climate emergency. There’s the personal level\, in which we ourselves adopt lifestyles with lower environmental impact. And there’s the community level\, where we bring sustainable practices to our towns and neighborhoods. \nBut we also take care to steward other precious resources such as money\, buildings\, education\, and institutions. We form committees to make decisions about repairing an aging meetinghouse\, consult financial experts about investing wisely and without harm\, and found organizations to provide support to those educating our young people. \nOur December issue will look at Stewardship as a Testimony. Some questions that authors might address: \n\nWhat is the spiritual basis of a testimony for sustainability?\nWhat is the right relationship between humans and the world? What are our responsibilities for caring for the earth and other creatures?\nHow do we use our talents to glorify God’s creations?\nWhat are Friends doing to promote environmentally sustainability\, both on the personal and political level?\nHow are we investing in monetary and concrete resources to ensure long-term sustainability for generations to come? Why are these important to us as Friends?\n\n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.

SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to The Pathfinders Collective’s Anthology\, Clarity: Stories About the Moment that Changed it All
DESCRIPTION:Note: to be fully transparent\, this is an unpaid anthology. 100% of the proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. \n\n\n\nWe are seeking submissions from storytellers\, both emerging and more established\, for our third and final life-story anthology\, Clarity: Stories About The Moment That Changed It All. The purpose of this anthology is to lift up the voices and shine a light on the talent of the incredible international community of storytellers.  Sad\, funny\, serious and anything in between; we are looking for whatever tone speaks to you. The story must be true\, and it must have happened to you directly. We want to hear your unique point of view. \nWhat kinds of stories are we looking for in Clarity? \nTell us about how you: \n\nfound joy that you thought you had lost\ndiscovered a part of yourself that you didn’t know existed\nfaced up to a truth that you had been avoiding\nlearned something that transformed your life\ntried something new that changed you\n\nAre you new to storytelling/writing? We LOVE newcomers! We are looking for promise over polish and are happy to work with writers to shape their story if it works for our anthology. \nNotes: We love poetry\, but this is not a poetry anthology. We are looking for prose writing only. We also love stories from people who have gone through difficult times. However\, we have a hard and fast rule of stories “from a scar not a wound.” If this story is still happening\, it is important\, but this is not the place for it to be shared. \nSubmission Guidelines  \nDates: All submissions must be in by Monday\, September 18th\, 2023\, by 11:59 PM CST. \nFee: There is no fee to submit a story in response to this call; writers are simply asked to adhere to all of the requirements set out here. \nWord count: Stories must be between 1200 and 1500 words. \nOriginal stories only: The story you submit cannot have been published electronically or in print previously\, including self-published stories or those published on a blog or public forum. See here for guidelines on what counts as “published.” \nNo multiple submissions: Please do not submit more than one story to the anthology. \nPersonal experience only: We only accept stories about your personal experience. We love cultural teachings and family stories that have been passed down. All forms of storytelling are beautiful. However\, we are only looking for your personal experience in this anthology. \nNo simultaneous submissions: Please do not submit the story to any other anthology or magazine while it is being considered for publication in Escape. We will respond to all submissions to the call; if your story is not selected\, you are free to submit your story elsewhere. We don’t want to own your story. We simply want to avoid a lengthy negotiation with another outlet. \nHow to Submit: Email your story in something approximating standard manuscript format to erodgers@pathfinderscollective.org or jkredlo@pathfinderscollective.org.  In the body of the email\, please provide the title of the story\, the word count\, and your name and contact information. Please include a personal biography of 100 words maximum. \nWe will respond to all submissions. If you have not heard back from us within two months after the close of submissions\, or if you have any questions or concerns about the submissions call\, please email erodgers@pathfinderscollective.org or jkredlo@pathfinderscollective.org. \nEmail your story in something approximating standard manuscript format to erodgers@pathfinderscollective.org or jkredlo@pathfinderscollective.org. In the body of the email\, please provide the title of the story\, the word count\, and your name and contact information. SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to River Mouth Review. Theme: "Local"
DESCRIPTION:We welcome poetry from both new and experienced poets! \nPoems are selected not only for their individual qualities\, but also in conjunction with the other poems chosen for each issue. Please consider that your poems\, if declined\, may simply not be the best fit for this publication at this time and place. \nSUBMIT : No more than 3 poems\, all in one single document\, with page breaks in between each poem. All forms of poetry are encouraged; read previous issues for a sense of our general vibe. Make sure your poems are as finished as you believe they can be before submitting. Very occasionally\, we may ask you to consider small edits before offering an acceptance. Complex forms and longer-line poems may need to be adjusted for our web platform. \nIf you have been previously published by RMR\, please don’t send more work for at least 2 years: we prioritize new-to-RMR voices. Please wait two months before inquiring about your submissions; however\, if you haven’t received a response by then\, feel free to send us a message via Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but PLEASE either withdraw your total submission as soon as possible if the poems are accepted elsewhere\, or use the message feature to let us know if you need to withdraw a single poem. Thank you!
