DESCRIPTION:Reckoning 8 Submission Call\nFor Reckoning 8\, we want thinking and writing about … this. All of this\, right now. We want to hear about active resistance to the patriarchofascist\, corporate-captured extractive state. Show us what it means that in order to build Cop City*\, a massive facility intended to train a new generation of lethal enforcers into an institution directly descended from slave patrols\, the state of Georgia and its actors must first level a forest and label protestors “domestic terrorists” as a precursor to murdering them. Help us understand how strategies of repression and control all over the world concentrate agency in the hands of the few at the expense of all other life. We are looking for work in opposition to a broad\, insidious fascism that treats water\, trees\, and bodies as exploitable\, expendable resources rather than sacred\, essential components of our global\, infinitely interconnected and interdependent web of life. \nWe are always seeking work from Indigenous writers and artists\, racialized writers and artists\, queer\, trans and/or disabled writers and artists\, and anyone\, anywhere in the world\, who has suffered the consequences\, intended or otherwise\, of dominant society’s systemic disconnect with and mistreatment of the natural world. And we’re seeking new ways to reach all of the above. Seriously\, if you know of a way we can do that\, please share. \nWe don’t publish ecofascism or work we perceive to be prejudiced in any form\, including sexism\, racism\, ableism\, ageism. We reserve the right to point it out—respectfully—when we see it\, though we’re as prone to mistakes and misunderstanding as anyone else. Here’s a start on a list of what else doesn’t work for us. \n\nPoetry\n\n\nOur interests in poetry tend towards the narrative\, preferably with some thematic heft. We’re open to long poems\, short poems\, hybrid art/poetry\, and all kinds of formalism.  Length: 0 – 10 pages (query for longer). Payment: $50 (US)/page. \n\n\nFiction\n\n\nThe fiction we publish is mostly\, but not exclusively\, speculative. DESCRIPTION:In Genesis 2:15 it is said that God put us “into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Modern Friends have leaned into the idea of stewardship\, most commonly in the context of earthcare and climate activism. \nThere’s the macro level\, where some of us lobby pressure on businesses and governments to adopt sustainable policies that address the climate emergency. There’s the personal level\, in which we ourselves adopt lifestyles with lower environmental impact. And there’s the community level\, where we bring sustainable practices to our towns and neighborhoods. \nBut we also take care to steward other precious resources such as money\, buildings\, education\, and institutions. We form committees to make decisions about repairing an aging meetinghouse\, consult financial experts about investing wisely and without harm\, and found organizations to provide support to those educating our young people. \nOur December issue will look at Stewardship as a Testimony. Some questions that authors might address: \n\nWhat is the spiritual basis of a testimony for sustainability?\nWhat is the right relationship between humans and the world? What are our responsibilities for caring for the earth and other creatures?\nHow do we use our talents to glorify God’s creations?\nWhat are Friends doing to promote environmentally sustainability\, both on the personal and political level?\nHow are we investing in monetary and concrete resources to ensure long-term sustainability for generations to come? Why are these important to us as Friends?\n\n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.

Letter Review connects writers with the vast number of people in search of fresh nonfiction content. \nNonfiction is a broad category: we’ve all been enchanted by the spell of a compelling piece of nonfiction in one of its many evolving forms. The Letter Review Prize welcomes all forms of nonfiction including: Memoir\, journalism\, essay (including personal essay)\, fictocriticism\, creative nonfiction\, travel\, nature\, opinion\, and many other permutations. \nAny and all works which convey information about the real world are welcome. Nonfiction may inform\, it may persuade\, explore\, or divulge. It takes the shape of both anecdote and empirical observation. You are welcome to include details of previous publications\, but this will have no impact on whether your poems will be selected for our magazine. \n\n\nAt this time\, we only accept poems written in English. You are welcome to include words and phrases from other languages. \n\n\nIt is free to submit your work. At present we do not offer compensation to our authors. DESCRIPTION:Shake off the snow and break out your beach reads: it’s time for the Summer Short Story Award for New Writers! The Masters Review’s Short Story Award for New Writers is a biannual contest that recognizes the best short prose from today’s emerging writers. We welcome submissions of previously unpublished fiction or creative nonfiction up to 6\,000 words. The contest runs is open to any writer who has not published a novel or memoir with a major press. \nGUIDELINES:\nThe first-place winner receives $3\,000\, online publication\, and agency review.\nThe second- and third-place finalists receive cash prizes ($300/$200)\, online publication\, and agency review.\nSubmissions of fiction or nonfiction must be under 6\,000 words.\nSubmitted work must be previously unpublished. This includes personal blogs\, social media accounts\, and other websites.\nThe entry fee is $20.\nSimultaneous and multiple submissions are allowed\, though each submission requires a $20 entry fee.\nIf your submission is accepted elsewhere\, please withdraw your submission on Submittable\, or contact us otherwise to let us know the piece is no longer available.\nWe do not require anonymous submissions for this contest.\nThis contest is for emerging writers only. Writers with single-author book-length work published or under contract with a major press are ineligible. We are interested in providing a platform to new writers; authors with books published by indie presses and self-published authors are welcome to submit unpublished work.\nInternational submissions are allowed\, provided the work is written primarily in English.\nAll submissions must be double-spaced with one-inch page margins and use Times New Roman or Garamond.\nThe contest’s deadline is 11:59pm PDT on August 27\, 2023.\nAll entries are considered for publication in New Voices.\nEvery submission will receive a response by the end of November.
