SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Reckoning: creative writing on environmental justice: "All of this\, right now"
DESCRIPTION:Reckoning 8 Submission Call\nFor Reckoning 8\, we want thinking and writing about … this. All of this\, right now. We want to hear about active resistance to the patriarchofascist\, corporate-captured extractive state. Show us what it means that in order to build Cop City*\, a massive facility intended to train a new generation of lethal enforcers into an institution directly descended from slave patrols\, the state of Georgia and its actors must first level a forest and label protestors “domestic terrorists” as a precursor to murdering them. Help us understand how strategies of repression and control all over the world concentrate agency in the hands of the few at the expense of all other life. We are looking for work in opposition to a broad\, insidious fascism that treats water\, trees\, and bodies as exploitable\, expendable resources rather than sacred\, essential components of our global\, infinitely interconnected and interdependent web of life. \nWe are always seeking work from Indigenous writers and artists\, racialized writers and artists\, queer\, trans and/or disabled writers and artists\, and anyone\, anywhere in the world\, who has suffered the consequences\, intended or otherwise\, of dominant society’s systemic disconnect with and mistreatment of the natural world. And we’re seeking new ways to reach all of the above. Seriously\, if you know of a way we can do that\, please share. \nWe don’t publish ecofascism or work we perceive to be prejudiced in any form\, including sexism\, racism\, ableism\, ageism. We reserve the right to point it out—respectfully—when we see it\, though we’re as prone to mistakes and misunderstanding as anyone else. Here’s a start on a list of what else doesn’t work for us. \n\nPoetry\n\n\nOur interests in poetry tend towards the narrative\, preferably with some thematic heft. We’re open to long poems\, short poems\, hybrid art/poetry\, and all kinds of formalism.  Length: 0 – 10 pages (query for longer). Payment: $50 (US)/page. \n\n\nFiction\n\n\nThe fiction we publish is mostly\, but not exclusively\, speculative. We appreciate surreal and experimental pieces as well as strong plotting\, but prefer writing that doesn’t lean too far into pulp. Length: 0 – 20\,000 words (query for longer). Payment: 10 cents (US)/word. \n\nCreative Nonfiction\n\n\nThe essays we publish tend to be more creative than journalistic; we like at least a bit of narrative with our information. Length: 0 – 20\,000 words (query for longer). Payment: 10 cents (US)/word. \n\n\nDeadline for Reckoning 8 is the solar equinox\, September 22\, 2023.

SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submissions to Friends Journal. Theme: "Stewardship as a Testimony"
DESCRIPTION:In Genesis 2:15 it is said that God put us “into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Modern Friends have leaned into the idea of stewardship\, most commonly in the context of earthcare and climate activism. \nThere’s the macro level\, where some of us lobby pressure on businesses and governments to adopt sustainable policies that address the climate emergency. There’s the personal level\, in which we ourselves adopt lifestyles with lower environmental impact. And there’s the community level\, where we bring sustainable practices to our towns and neighborhoods. \nBut we also take care to steward other precious resources such as money\, buildings\, education\, and institutions. We form committees to make decisions about repairing an aging meetinghouse\, consult financial experts about investing wisely and without harm\, and found organizations to provide support to those educating our young people. \nOur December issue will look at Stewardship as a Testimony. Some questions that authors might address: \n\nWhat is the spiritual basis of a testimony for sustainability?\nWhat is the right relationship between humans and the world? What are our responsibilities for caring for the earth and other creatures?\nHow do we use our talents to glorify God’s creations?\nWhat are Friends doing to promote environmentally sustainability\, both on the personal and political level?\nHow are we investing in monetary and concrete resources to ensure long-term sustainability for generations to come? Why are these important to us as Friends?\n\n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.

SUMMARY:F - Call for Submissions to The Pathfinders Collective’s Anthology\, Clarity: Stories About the Moment that Changed it All
DESCRIPTION:Note: to be fully transparent\, this is an unpaid anthology. 100% of the proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. \n\n\n\nWe are seeking submissions from storytellers\, both emerging and more established\, for our third and final life-story anthology\, Clarity: Stories About The Moment That Changed It All. The purpose of this anthology is to lift up the voices and shine a light on the talent of the incredible international community of storytellers.  Sad\, funny\, serious and anything in between; we are looking for whatever tone speaks to you. The story must be true\, and it must have happened to you directly. We want to hear your unique point of view. \nWhat kinds of stories are we looking for in Clarity? \nTell us about how you: \n\nfound joy that you thought you had lost\ndiscovered a part of yourself that you didn’t know existed\nfaced up to a truth that you had been avoiding\nlearned something that transformed your life\ntried something new that changed you\n\nAre you new to storytelling/writing? We LOVE newcomers! We are looking for promise over polish and are happy to work with writers to shape their story if it works for our anthology. \nNotes: We love poetry\, but this is not a poetry anthology. We are looking for prose writing only. We also love stories from people who have gone through difficult times. However\, we have a hard and fast rule of stories “from a scar not a wound.” If this story is still happening\, it is important\, but this is not the place for it to be shared. \nSubmission Guidelines  \nDates: All submissions must be in by Monday\, September 18th\, 2023\, by 11:59 PM CST. \nFee: There is no fee to submit a story in response to this call; writers are simply asked to adhere to all of the requirements set out here. \nWord count: Stories must be between 1200 and 1500 words. \nOriginal stories only: The story you submit cannot have been published electronically or in print previously\, including self-published stories or those published on a blog or public forum. See here for guidelines on what counts as “published.” \nNo multiple submissions: Please do not submit more than one story to the anthology. \nPersonal experience only: We only accept stories about your personal experience. We love cultural teachings and family stories that have been passed down. All forms of storytelling are beautiful. However\, we are only looking for your personal experience in this anthology. \nNo simultaneous submissions: Please do not submit the story to any other anthology or magazine while it is being considered for publication in Escape. We will respond to all submissions to the call; if your story is not selected\, you are free to submit your story elsewhere. We don’t want to own your story. We simply want to avoid a lengthy negotiation with another outlet. \nHow to Submit: Email your story in something approximating standard manuscript format to erodgers@pathfinderscollective.org or jkredlo@pathfinderscollective.org.  In the body of the email\, please provide the title of the story\, the word count\, and your name and contact information. Please include a personal biography of 100 words maximum. \nWe will respond to all submissions. SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to River Mouth Review. Theme: "Local"
DESCRIPTION:We welcome poetry from both new and experienced poets! \nPoems are selected not only for their individual qualities\, but also in conjunction with the other poems chosen for each issue. Please consider that your poems\, if declined\, may simply not be the best fit for this publication at this time and place. \nSUBMIT : No more than 3 poems\, all in one single document\, with page breaks in between each poem. All forms of poetry are encouraged; read previous issues for a sense of our general vibe. Make sure your poems are as finished as you believe they can be before submitting. Complex forms and longer-line poems may need to be adjusted for our web platform. \nIf you have been previously published by RMR\, please don’t send more work for at least 2 years: we prioritize new-to-RMR voices. Please wait two months before inquiring about your submissions; however\, if you haven’t received a response by then\, feel free to send us a message via Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but PLEASE either withdraw your total submission as soon as possible if the poems are accepted elsewhere\, or use the message feature to let us know if you need to withdraw a single poem. SUMMARY:P - tiny wren Anthology Series Seeks "The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power an Fragility of Memories"
DESCRIPTION:Print Anthology Theme: The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power and Fragility of Memories\n\n\n\n\n  \nAnd it all stared back. We’ve met before\, my memory \nstarted to say\, somewhere. . . . \nAnd then I stopped: my father’s eyes were gray \nExcerpt from William Stafford’s poem “Fall Journey\,” originally published in Prairie Schooner\, Vol. 31\, No. 1\, Spring 1957 \nPoet + writer Kip Knott wants your memories. More precisely\, he wants your philosophical musings on memory for tiny wren lit’s next print anthology\, The Half-Life of Echoes: Poems about the Power and Fragility of Memories. \nMemories can stop us dead in our tracks with their epiphanies. Memories can also be as fragile + fleeting as words that hang for a moment before our face in the cold of a winter’s breath. William Stafford’s poem “Fall Journey” captures the electric jolt that can come with a sudden memory. Take a look at Kip’s own memory poem “Early Onset Ghost Town” published in ONE ART. \nFocus more on the nature of memory over detailing specific memories—memory formation\, loss of memory\, sensory memories\, short- or long-term memories\, memory recall\, etc. Include imagery + words that captivate or surprise\, delight or evoke certain emotions. \nSubmit up to six (6) tiny poems in a single Word document (.doc or .docx or .pdf). Each poem should be on its own separate page\, single-spaced\, + in 12-point font\, nothing fancy. Work should be your own + unpublished. Before you submit\, please read our FAQ page.  \nEach featured poet will receive a free contributor’s copy + 50% off for additional copies.

SUMMARY:PFN - Beloved: Love Letters to the Beauty of ButchFemme Seeking Submissions on "Flesh"
DESCRIPTION:“Flesh” \n\nOur Autumn ’23 Theme\n\n\nIn decay\, there is devotion. Through flesh\, we express our desire. The grotesque and unsettling\, the terrifying and unholy\, the bare and exposed. Sinking teeth into the body of your lover or the lick of salt from sweat or tears or blood… how does your ButchFemme devotion become realized in the flesh? \nFor the third issue of Beloved\, we want to see your interpretations on the theme of Flesh. Send us your ButchFemme horror\, present us with the beauty of the grotesque\, show us how touch and devotion and consumption embody your ButchFemme identities and desires. \nYou are absolutely welcome to submit more than one piece for review\, but please divide your pieces into SEPARATE submissions unless your work is all part of one collection (ex: if you are submitting multiple different poems\, please only submit one per application unless they are all part of the same collection). \n\n\n\nPlease do not submit to our publication if your work is not somehow related to ButchFemme/StudFemme culture\, identities\, or experiences. Please be sure that all work submitted ties back to the central topic and theme of “Flesh”! Feel free to take a look at our mood board to get inspired\, and if you have any hesitance on whether or not your piece fits the theme\, just submit it anyway! We’d love to see it either way. 🙂 \nNOTE: We are currently only accepting works from applicants who are 18+!

SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contest Theme: "Art of Deception"
DESCRIPTION:August 2023 Fox Tales Contest: Art of Deception\n\n\nFor the month of August 2023\, Black Fox is accepting contest submissions for our Fox Tales series. The theme for August is “Art of Deception.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nOur Fox Tales contests are month-long mini contests that run between our two main contests. They allow us to publish more writers and creative work outside of our usual biannual issues! \nFox Tales will be published as “mini books” on our Instagram account and website! Instagram carousels remind us of turning book pages\, and we thought it would be fun to transform carousels into mini books! We will design carousel pages for the winning stories and poetry. Writers should keep in mind word counts. We are not opposed to longer stories and will consider them\, but be aware shorter stories tend to resonate better with us for this project. We suggest keeping submissions around 500-2\,000 words. Poets may submit 3-8 poems. If a work is too long for 8 Instagram squares\, we will break it up into several parts. \nDo you have characters who are living in a realm of deceit or spinning webs of lies? We want to read about them for our August Fox Tales Contest! We’re looking for work that challenges perceptions\, showcases characters caught in a labyrinth of lies\, and/or leaves readers stuck in a gray area. Show us truth camouflaged by falsehoods\, the blurred line between fact and fiction\, or the entanglement of half-truths and illusions. Whether you submit a short story\, poem\, or creative nonfiction piece\, we want to explore complex emotions. Will the result be redemption or ruin? \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose 1-3 winners. The prize is $100 and publication as an Instagram carousel mini book and on our website as part of our Fox Tales series. Winners will also receive a Black Fox Writer Pack which contains writerly items from our sister company Writer’s Atelier and more. In each pack: \n\nOne back issue of Black Fox Literary Magazine\nA one-year digital subscription to Poets & Writers\nA copy of The Write Gym Workbook by Racquel Henry\nLittle Book of Writing Affirmations by Racquel Henry\nWriting Stickers\nA “Just F***ing Write” Pencil\nA “Get the Book Done” Tote Bag\nSticky notes\n\nThe contest entry fee is $9 and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on August 31\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be between 500-2\,000 words. For poetry\, send 3-8 poems in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager found here. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of October\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:N - The Letter Review Prize for Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction’s popularity is soaring due to the ever increasing demands of voracious readers who are hungry for content which is highly relevant to their interests. There’s never been a better time to be a nonfiction author\, or a more exciting time to publish nonfiction. Letter Review connects writers with the vast number of people in search of fresh nonfiction content. \nNonfiction is a broad category: we’ve all been enchanted by the spell of a compelling piece of nonfiction in one of its many evolving forms. The Letter Review Prize welcomes all forms of nonfiction including: Memoir\, journalism\, essay (including personal essay)\, fictocriticism\, creative nonfiction\, travel\, nature\, opinion\, and many other permutations. \nAny and all works which convey information about the real world are welcome. Nonfiction may inform\, it may persuade\, explore\, or divulge. It takes the shape of both anecdote and empirical observation. The inclusion of information which the author knows to be untrue or fictional is discouraged in this genre: but subjective conclusions are certainly encouraged. \nNonfiction competitions represent a wonderful opportunity for emerging writers to demonstrate their ability and secure publication. They also offer established writers an exciting arena in which to showcase new work and build their reputations. \nLetter Review believes in the power of literature\, and in the importance and magic of new writing. \nThe top three winning entries are declared the Winners\, and share equally in the Prize pool of $1000 USD. Each Winner’s entry is published\, accompanied by its own attractive original commissioned artwork. Additionally\, there is a high likelihood the Winners will be included in the Letter Review Anthology. To recognize the extraordinary talent of the writers who do not place in the top three\, twenty entries will be longlisted\, and ten shortlisted. Offering further opportunities for writers\, all entries are considered for publication. \nTo raise the visibilty of our writers\, Winners are considered for submission to the Pushcart Prize\, other prestigious anthologies such as Best of the Net\, and our end of year anthology. \nThe Letter Review Prize is judged blind to ensure all entrants including emerging and diverse writers\, along with established writers\, have an equal chance of success. We do not assign entries to anonymous readers: Every entry is personally read by our highly qualified Judges. Winners are widely promoted on our social media channels (FB 34\,000 members) and at our website (50\,000 monthly visitors). Letter Review is a proud member of the international Community of Literary Magazines and Presses\, and we adhere to the CLMP Contest Code of Ethics. \nRead our wonderful previous winning entries by clicking here. \nRead inspiring comments from our community about the life changing impact of the Prize here.\nHow To Enter \n\nWe are seeking entries between 0 – 5000 words.\nThe Prize is open to anyone\, from anywhere in the world.\nThere are no restrictions: all nonfiction entries welcome.\nIt costs $20 USD to enter one submission\, $35 to enter two (save $5)\, and $45 to enter three (save $15).\nPlease include a short biography (suitable for publication) of less than 200 words in the Cover Letter section.\nInclude a synopsis or abstract of less than 300 words which clearly summarises the content of your submission including your conclusion (don’t leave any surprises please).\nEnsure the file name of your document is only the title of your entry. Do not include your name inside your entry document or in the file name as the Prize is judged blind.\nYou may enter as many times as you wish.\nNo AI generated content please.\nThe judges will be Ol James and Kita Das.\nFormat: Submit entry (or entries) in a single document\, written in English. The entry must be original work. No translations please.\nYour entry must be entirely original\, unpublished\, and free from any claims by other parties. No ‘retellings’ or contemporizations.
