We’ve already made a website.  \nSEND US YOUR WORDS! \nWord count limit for fiction and creative non-fiction is 750 words.  \nFormatting \nOur submission manager\, Duosoma\, will guide you through this\, but we accept doc\, docx\, pdf\, jpg\, tif and png files. \nWe’re not picky about font but for the love of God do not use Comic Sans (even if graphic design is your passion). Reasonable font size please and preferably 1.5 or double spaced. \nThird person bio. 50 words max. We find the most intimidating part of submitting to be cover letters so we’re not asking for a whole lot. A simple “oh hey!” Or even “whaddup” will suffice. Maybe just tell us a fun fact about you (like what your favorite color or shape or dinosaur is!). Just acknowledge that we exist because our therapists said it’s good for us.

We especially like edgy writing that offers insight into darkness. We prefer character-driven stories as opposed to plot-driven ones. We relish a piece with a great deal of heart and more than a little bit of Truth (note the capital “T”). We want to read a story that makes us feel edified or philosophical or amused or creeped out or angry or melancholy or inspired or\, best yet\, all of these things together. \nWe find stories that include gratuitous violence distasteful. Sexism\, racism\, or other forms of intolerance are intolerable to us. That said\, you can certainly reveal a character through his/her prejudices; just don’t use a story to perpetuate negative stereotypes or ignorance. I was shocked and horrified. I was also triggered. I felt shame and betrayal at what this country has become. I had to take some time off and I had to re-focus. \nIssue 14 will be a reaction\, a declaration of resistance\, a doubling down of queer and trans voices. Claude Cahun and her partner\, Marcel Moore\, were strident anti-fascists. They were so active in the resistance that they were captured\, imprisoned\, and sentenced to death. They only escaped that fate by the end of the war. DESCRIPTION:Healing begins when someone bears witness. I saw you. I believe you. \nAs poets\, we begin our journey by bearing witness. Poetry is the language of observation and we often see signs and symbols in the world that others overlook. But we can’t always stay on the sidelines—sometimes life throws us into the world before we’re ready\, which can lead to undue harm. We all feel pain\, but the question then becomes: What can we do with it? \nThe quote above is from Olivia Benson\, protagonist of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit\, played by Mariska Hargitay. The link between this television show and our poetry contest might not be obvious\, but Hargitay not only bears witness in her twenty-five year run as Detective Olivia Benson\, she commits to protect the most vulnerable among us and fosters a space for healing as well. Her dedication is admirable\, and we at Frontier are making the same promise. Let’s not forget that the word “poem” comes from the Greek word for “create.” It’s not just about seeing or believing\, it’s about what you make from  what you’ve seen and what you’ve learned. \nThis year’s Hurt & Healing Prize is about expressing our pain\, but it’s also about celebrating all we have overcome. It is also a call to action—an invitation to support each other in the darkest times. Second- and third-place winners will receive $300 and $200 respectively\, as well as publication.\nAbout Our Judge:  \nRobert Wood Lynn is a poet from Virginia. He is the author of the collection Mothman Apologia (Yale University Press\, 2022) and the chapbook How to Maintain Eye Contact (Button Poetry\, 2023). He is the recipient of the 2021 Yale Younger Poets Prize\, the 2023 Kate Tufts Discovery Award\, and a 2023 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. His work has been featured in American Poetry Review\, The Atlantic\, POETRY\, The Yale Review\, and other publications. He teaches poetry at Juilliard and Brooklyn Poets. \nWhat our judge is looking for:  \nI am honored to be asked to jury Frontier’s poetry contest themed on hurt and healing\, because so much of the work of poetry happens in this space of change—hurt and healing not simply or even necessarily as subject but as experience\, since that is what a poem is: an experience rather than a recounting. I am interested in poems that wound us gently\, or that restore something inside us\, or both. Poems that help us reach the interior and emotional spaces no other medium could. That let language work indirectly\, through image\, metaphor\, surprise\, and play\, to accomplish things impossible in straightforward retelling. \nGuidelines: \n\nSubmissions are open to new and emerging writers (for this contest\, we define this as poets with no more than one full-length work of poetry published or forthcoming at the time of submission).\nSend up to three poems per submission\, for a total of no more than five pages. We have no aesthetic or formal requirements and consider all styles of poetry. Each new submission requires a $20 reading fee.\nAs part of our dedication to the pursuit of a more inclusive publishing world\, we offer a free submission window for poets from historically marginalized groups (BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, disabled community\, et cetera) at the beginning of the contest until our cap of fifty. This submission category has reached its cap and is now closed.\nDo not include any identifying information in the body of your document.\nPlease submit unpublished poems only.\nWe welcome simultaneous submissions\, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.\nYou may submit multiple times\, but each submission requires a separate $20 fee.\nPlease provide a brief cover letter that includes a short\, third-person bio with your publication history and any applicable content warnings.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing in English. DESCRIPTION:ROADS \n\nPhoto Taken at the Kurseong Railway Station by Sayan Aich Bhowmik\nLong and winding\, smooth and short\, or rough and edgy – oftentimes roads make and unmake us. We leave behind traces of what we are/ were while traversing a road\, not knowing how our motion forward can lead us back to moments we had forgotten. As a source of connection and motion\, a road binds and liberates us concurrently. This reminds us of Gloria Steinem’s thoughts about the transformative power of road: \n“It leads us out of denial and into reality\, out of theory and into practice\, out of caution and into action\, out of statistics and into stories — in short\, out of our heads and into our hearts.” \nOn the road\, the familiar is intertwined with the unfamiliar and the personal is connected with the collective. A roadside shop\, a group of trees serving as margins of a road or some random signposts act as diverse characters in innumerable dramas played out by the road. Its ever-evolving attachment with human foot and vehicular rhythm makes it a space laden with memories\, intrigues and connected histories. With an escalating visibility of road trips\, adventure stories\, capitalist investment on road aesthetics\, road as a geographical entity and political space sustains vastness of human experience.  How does one qualify the robust wholesomeness of roads? Where does one locate its connections with life itself? How has it historically been depicted in literature and culture? The editorial team is interested in considering submissions that depict various aspects of road/roads. \n\nThese are some of the issues that Parcham would like to explore and delve into for our upcoming issue due to be released by the end of March 2025. We invite Poems\, Short stories (both written originally in English and in English Translation) and Creative Non-Fiction that address issues listed above. I must make myself known to him.’ \n— Sadegh Hedayat\, “The Blind Owl” \nIt is said that the swan sings only one beguiling song throughout the course of its life\, releasing this song at the moment of its death. This is\, of course\, untrue\, but it begs the question: what would your final gesture be? \nWhen faced with an ending\, what expression must spill forth? A swan song is a farewell\, a declaration\, a last sounding breath after a long silence. We invite you to share these final acts of resistance\, joy\, affirmation\, confession\, celebration\, or consumption. Consider whether you will share a song of fond remembrance or one of sorrow. Will it be bittersweet or might it take another form entirely? Perhaps your swan song will reflect on the past\, or perhaps it will look forward into the unknown. How will you make yourself known to your shadow? What needs to be said? \nShare these swan songs with us\, dedicate them to a particular someone\, or perform them for yourself alone. Send us your final gestures in prose\, poetry\, or hybrid forms. Make them lasting or fleeting. \nExamine your relationship with endings of all kinds: in love\, life\, or mortality\, through migration or change. What other endings might compel you to speak? DESCRIPTION:Careful/Care-full Collaboration\nCreative collaboration is an opportunity to summon and practice ways of being in the world and with each other that challenge myths of exceptional individualism as constructed within colonial and capitalist contexts. This type of collaboration can acknowledge and affirm that making art is not an isolated event\, and has the potential to share and/or redefine power between artists and the communities in/with which they work. The dynamic and responsive work that emerges from entangling minds\, perspectives\, and positionalities speaks and models on the page or screen\, through the body or soundwaves\, the care and imagination that is integral to community building and kin-making.  Creative collaboration is a method and commitment to seeding and nurturing webs of knowledge\, histories\, practices\, and relationships with each other and the places that are sacred to us. \nGuided by this understanding\, the Spring 2025 issue of About Place Journal invites submissions that contemplate what it means to collaborate with others through practices and processes that are careful and care-full\, that is collaborations that are cautious at various stages and shaped by an ethics of care between the artists\, for their communities\, and throughout the process of co-creating. \nKeeping in mind the core values  of the Black Earth Institute to use Art to “promote an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings and this earth we share” and to “work toward a society based on Justice\, Spirit\, and Earth Centeredness…” this issue invites joint submissions from artistic collaborators that make transparent the practices\, processes\, and creations that connect them to each other\, honor the earth\, engage with spirit\, and promote/fight for justice in ways that require careful and care-full attention to individual and communal needs and desires. \nWe are interested in submissions that define community and care\, and that consider how/why collaboration necessitates careful or care-full approaches to creating\, re-vision relationships with art\, artists\, community\, nature\, and/or the divine. \nQuestions to explore include\, but are not limited to: How does collaboration lead to care and what connects the two? How does conflict within collaboration lead to new ways to care about each other? What practices shape your work as an individual? As a collaborative unit? As a community? We are no longer bred to be rational creatures. Denial is key. Freedom from blame is the promise. DESCRIPTION:This year\, we wanted to bookend our Fall issue with the Spring issue. And so\, after Issue 35: First Words\, comes Issue 36: Last Words. We want you to send us your writing that has all the charge and desperation and absolute importance of the last words you’ll ever write. We want the last words between lovers\, the utterances that eek out of the cracks of a broken heart or perhaps the lines that break the heart of another. We want the last words before everything went sideways\, before everything ended and perhaps began anew in that ending. What are the words you would share with us if they were the only things we’d remember you by? How do your characters want to be remembered? What is the secret you need us to know before you go or the truth that comes out\, that slips\, that last thing you wish we’d ever hear but can’t take back anymore now that it’s out? If you had one last thing to give us\, one last thing to say\, one last thing part of yourself that needed a voice before the silence\, what would it be? We want that. \nMore important than any theme\, we welcome all submissions as long as they’re honest and authentic – what we want most of all is your best work. Work must be original\, created without the use of AI\, and previously unpublished (with the exception of translations – see genre guidelines). \nWe acknowledge that literary spaces traditionally have centered the white\, heterosexual\, cisgender male experience at the expense of other voices.
