Personal narrative is encouraged and these are primarily experiential essays\, although other approaches might be relevant in some works. We are especially interested in global and diverse perspectives for this section. All emails should be sent to the section editor as indicated\, and titled as requested. By following our guidelines\, you can help us accept your work more quickly. Thank you. \nDue to the number of submissions we receive\, and our goal of publishing as many writers as possible\, writers may only submit or query one work per issue. SUMMARY:PN - Yellow Arrow Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Unfurl
DESCRIPTION:UNFURL\n: to release from a furled\, coiled\, or wrapped state\n: to open out from or as if from a furled state\n: to unfold \nThe issue will be released in May. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis issue of Yellow Arrow Journal explores the process people go through when finding and transforming into their authentic selves. UNFURL will be a survey of the unique journeys people take when experiencing and undergoing self-transformation\, journeys that all start with a little fire\, a desire\, deep inside. \nSubmissions Guidelines\n\n\nAccepted submissions include creative nonfiction and poetry by authors identifying as women. \n\n\nSubmissions must relate to the theme UNFURL\, as interpreted by the author\, using provided guiding questions (these will change for each theme). \n\n\nWhat role did community play in finding yourself? \n\n\nHow has your sense of self changed due to your transformation? What about your relationships? \n\n\nWhat did you find along the way? \n\n\nWhat do you still need to be authentically you? \n\n\nWas there something that forced you to be a different version of yourself? How did you internalize it? \n\n\n\n\nCreative nonfiction (1 submission per author per issue) must be between 100 and 2\,000 words. Poetry (up to 2 poems per author per issue\, grouped into a single document) may be any length. \n\n\nSubmissions do not need to be in English but must include an English translation. \n\n\nNo previously published work will be accepted at this time—this includes all printed and online material; simultaneous submissions are okay but please let us know when you send in your submission(s) and if a submission is published elsewhere in the interim\, email submissions@yellowarrowpublishing.com immediately. \n\n\nAre You Ready to Submit?\nTo submit to UNFURL (Vol. X\, No. 1\, spring 2025)\, send an email to submissions@yellowarrowpublishing.com and include: \n\n\nSubject: Vol. #\, No. # Theme – type of submission [nonfiction\, poetry\, or cover art] (required) \n\n\nYour full name (and name you would want Yellow Arrow to use)\, nationality\, and current city/state/country of residence (required) \n\n\nOur writers and readers come from all walks of life and so do we. We are taking steps across our portfolio to increase representation and give greater visibility to the voices of underrepresented women-identifying storytellers. If you are comfortable doing so\, please share with us which underrepresented communities you identify with that may make you uniquely positioned to connect with a particular group of readers (optional) \n\n\nYour pronouns and age (optional) \n\n\nWhere you heard about us (optional) \n\n\nAuthors/artists should only submit one type of submission per issue; no agents. \nNote that submissions are anonymously reviewed in-house; the information you provide above is used only to better understand the composition of our audience. \nAttach your submission to your email. Accepted files for creative nonfiction and poetry submissions include .doc/.docx\, .rtf\, or .pdf (.doc/.docx preferred)—use minimal document styling and do not include identifying information (only within your email). Accepted files for cover art include .jpeg/.jpg\, .tiff/.tif\, .gif\, .eps\, or .psd—a low resolution is preferable at this time. \nBy sending your submission you agree to the following statements: \n\n\nYou are a writer or artist who identifies as a woman \n\n\nYou have completely read and submitted within the guidelines. \n\n\nDue to the volume of submissions and the nature of our submission process\, authors/artists will not receive an email confirming receipt of submission. Rather\, all who submit within the guidelines\, whether accepted to the next issue or not\, will receive an email after submissions have closed—please do not email us to inquire about a submission. Submissions for UNFURL (Vol. X\, No. 1\, spring 2025) are open February 1-28.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Exist Otherwise Literary Journal Issue 14. Theme: We Are Not Going Back!
DESCRIPTION:To be honest\, I posted a theme and prompt for Issue 14 a couple weeks before the election. But I completely freaked out when I woke up Nov. 6 and saw the election results. I was shocked and horrified. I was also triggered. I felt shame and betrayal at what this country has become. I had to take some time off and I had to re-focus. \nIssue 14 will be a reaction\, a declaration of resistance\, a doubling down of queer and trans voices. Claude Cahun and her partner\, Marcel Moore\, were strident anti-fascists. They were so active in the resistance that they were captured\, imprisoned\, and sentenced to death. They only escaped that fate by the end of the war. So here’s the new theme for 14: \nWe Are Not Going Back!\n  \nWhat to Submit\nWriting\nWe accept any kind of written work: poetry\, prose\, essays\, fiction\, creative non-fiction\, scripts\, hybrid\, experimental writing\, whatever. \n500 Words or Less: You may submit up to three (3) per issue. \n500-1000 Words: You may submit up to one (1) per issue. \nWhat Not to Submit\n\nDon’t submit work that you do not have the rights to.\nErotica is fine\, but nothing explicit.\nWe appreciate horror as a genre\, but it’s not what we’re looking for.\nNo hate\, racism\, sexism\, misogyny\, transphobia\, torture\, gratuitous violence\, or anything that aspires to cause harm.\n\nHow to Submit\nWhat follows are our requirements for submissions of work to us. We will not typically reject a submission if it doesn’t meet these requirements exactly. However\, any contributor who consistently submits work that is sloppy or hard to understand\, is less likely to receive a notice of acceptance. \nWe require submissions to come from our Submission Form. This allows us to better keep track of them. \nWriting Submissions Format\nWe accept works submitted in plain text\, .rtf\, .doc\, .docx\, or .pdf. \nIf your work requires any special formatting\, pdf is suggested. In some cases\, it might make sense to send your work as an image\, in which case\, jpg is fine. \nStyle Guide for Writing Submissions\n\nTypeface – The only thing we care about is that we can read your work with ease and clarity. Serif and Sans Serif are both fine\, but please use something common\, such as Times or Helvetica.\nType size – Goldilocks! (Not too small\, not too large.) 11-13 points is ideal.\nPage Size – We don’t care\, as long as the work is readable.\nMargins – We don’t care\, as long as the work is readable.\nLine Spacing (Leading) – We don’t care\, as long as the work is readable.\nType & Background Color – Black on white is preferred.\nSpecial Situations – Some contemporary writing breaks conventions and incorporates elements of visual art and/or experimentation. This is wonderful. The use of specialized fonts\, typefaces\, or type sizing\, mixed typefaces\, special characters\, etc. is all the more reason to submit work in PDF or JPG format. We reserve the right to treat some of these types of work as text-based\, and some as visual art. But we can’t make any broad guidelines here. These kinds of works will necessarily involve conversations between author and publisher so that decisions can be made jointly.\n\nWritten work will be formatted and displayed according to our internal style guide. Any exceptions to this must be negotiated on an individual basis. \n\nPayment\n\nWe pay $15 per published written work.\nPayment is issued within 1-3 days of publishing.\n\nWe can only guarantee payment through Paypal or Venmo. If you are unable to use either of those\, let us know ahead of time and we’ll try to work something out. \n\nRights\nUpon completion of the Contributor Agreement (sent by email with notice of acceptance)\, we reserve the right to publish your submitted work on this site\, and in a downloadable PDF version of the issue. Both of these shall remain available here for a minimum of 60 days from the publish date. \nOur right to publish your work is not exclusive. You may publish it elsewhere while it is published here. \nAfter 60 days\, you may request that your work be removed for any reason. Absent such request\, your work will remain available on the web site and in a downloadable PDF for as long as this journal continues. \nWe retain no other rights to your work.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Vilas Avenue. Theme: Symbiosis. Harmony

Harmony”) is January 1st\, 2025 through March 1st\, 2025.\n \nFor Issue #7\, we’re looking for poetry that challenges us to find similarity in difference and difference in similarity. Translate the nuance between an Emaj and an EbMinor. Show us (without showing us) an autumn hawk catching mice in your field of harvested corn. Send us the token lamprey on the shark’s back. Also welcomed:  1) riffs & tangents grounded in the sounds of the words “symbiosis” and/or “harmony”\, 2) metal so cool it’s hot to the touch. \nConfuse us to the point of finally understanding. \nCheers! \nDan & HW \nHOW TO:  Submit 1-3 poems pasted into the body of an e-mail or as an attachment to vilasavenue@gmail.com with the subject line “Poetry submission”. Please also include a brief\, third-person biography. You will hear back on the status of your submission within 2-4 months of the opening of our reading period\, if not sooner. Your own previously unpublished works only\, please. Simultaneous submissions are OK\, but please write to let us know if someone else snags your work first. Please do not send Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated poems. \nThere is no fee to submit. We strongly believe that writing has value\, and we believe that\, when feasible\, writers should be compensated for their work. In alignment with arching toward that philosophy\, one poet (chosen at random out of all authors accepted for Issue Seven) will receive a $25 honorarium upon publication. \nAN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY:  Vilas Avenue values and respects diversity in all its forms. We recognize that life experiences\, perspectives\, and circumstances juxtaposed with our built and virtual environments manifest and emerge in dynamic and meaningful patterns that make us all human. If the submission process presents any barriers to your access\, please contact vilasavenue@gmail.com and we will adapt to accommodate your process. \nThank you for considering Vilas Avenue as a potential outlet for your work!

Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. SUMMARY:P - The 2025 Hurt & Healing Prize. Theme: Hurt & Healing
DESCRIPTION:Healing begins when someone bears witness. I saw you. I believe you. \nAs poets\, we begin our journey by bearing witness. Poetry is the language of observation and we often see signs and symbols in the world that others overlook. But we can’t always stay on the sidelines—sometimes life throws us into the world before we’re ready\, which can lead to undue harm. We all feel pain\, but the question then becomes: What can we do with it? \nThe quote above is from Olivia Benson\, protagonist of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit\, played by Mariska Hargitay. The link between this television show and our poetry contest might not be obvious\, but Hargitay not only bears witness in her twenty-five year run as Detective Olivia Benson\, she commits to protect the most vulnerable among us and fosters a space for healing as well. Her dedication is admirable\, and we at Frontier are making the same promise. Let’s not forget that the word “poem” comes from the Greek word for “create.” It’s not just about seeing or believing\, it’s about what you make from  what you’ve seen and what you’ve learned. \nThis year’s Hurt & Healing Prize is about expressing our pain\, but it’s also about celebrating all we have overcome. It is also a call to action—an invitation to support each other in the darkest times. We may feel as if the path forward isn’t clear—but as a community\, we answer these questions together.\nFurther reading for inspiration can be found here: \n“Am I Going to Kill My Daughter” | The Poetry Foundation \n“Grief” | The Poetry Foundation \n“Arthritis is one thing\, the hurting another” by Camille T. Dungy – Poems | Academy of American Poets \nThe first place winner will receive $3\,000 and publication. Second- and third-place winners will receive $300 and $200 respectively\, as well as publication.\nAbout Our Judge:  \nRobert Wood Lynn is a poet from Virginia. He is the author of the collection Mothman Apologia (Yale University Press\, 2022) and the chapbook How to Maintain Eye Contact (Button Poetry\, 2023). He is the recipient of the 2021 Yale Younger Poets Prize\, the 2023 Kate Tufts Discovery Award\, and a 2023 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. His work has been featured in American Poetry Review\, The Atlantic\, POETRY\, The Yale Review\, and other publications. He teaches poetry at Juilliard and Brooklyn Poets. \nWhat our judge is looking for:  \nI am honored to be asked to jury Frontier’s poetry contest themed on hurt and healing\, because so much of the work of poetry happens in this space of change—hurt and healing not simply or even necessarily as subject but as experience\, since that is what a poem is: an experience rather than a recounting. I am interested in poems that wound us gently\, or that restore something inside us\, or both. Poems that help us reach the interior and emotional spaces no other medium could. That let language work indirectly\, through image\, metaphor\, surprise\, and play\, to accomplish things impossible in straightforward retelling. \nGuidelines: \n\nSubmissions are open to new and emerging writers (for this contest\, we define this as poets with no more than one full-length work of poetry published or forthcoming at the time of submission).\nSend up to three poems per submission\, for a total of no more than five pages. We have no aesthetic or formal requirements and consider all styles of poetry. Each new submission requires a $20 reading fee.\nAs part of our dedication to the pursuit of a more inclusive publishing world\, we offer a free submission window for poets from historically marginalized groups (BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, disabled community\, et cetera) at the beginning of the contest until our cap of fifty. This submission category has reached its cap and is now closed.\nDo not include any identifying information in the body of your document.\nPlease submit unpublished poems only.\nWe welcome simultaneous submissions\, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.\nYou may submit multiple times\, but each submission requires a separate $20 fee.\nPlease provide a brief cover letter that includes a short\, third-person bio with your publication history and any applicable content warnings.\nSubmissions are open internationally\, to any poet writing in English. Inclusion of other languages is welcome\, as long as the poem is primarily written in English.\nPlease do not submit work if you have a personal relationship with the judge.\nIf you haven’t already\, please verify your email address with Submittable for more consistent communication.\nWe will not accept AI-generated work for this contest.\nIf you have any questions\, please visit our FAQ page first. If you don’t find the answer to your question\, you can send an email to contact (at) frontierpoetry (dot) com.\n\nEditorial Feedback Option:\nThis option costs $59 and will provide you with two pages of detailed and actionable feedback on a poem of your choice from your packet\, including suggestions for future submissions. The $149 option will provide you with three letters from three different editors. Our guest editors are paid a significant portion of the fee and all are astute and professional poets.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Parcham Online. Theme: Roads
DESCRIPTION:ROADS \n\nPhoto Taken at the Kurseong Railway Station by Sayan Aich Bhowmik\nLong and winding\, smooth and short\, or rough and edgy – oftentimes roads make and unmake us. We leave behind traces of what we are/ were while traversing a road\, not knowing how our motion forward can lead us back to moments we had forgotten. As a source of connection and motion\, a road binds and liberates us concurrently. This reminds us of Gloria Steinem’s thoughts about the transformative power of road: \n“It leads us out of denial and into reality\, out of theory and into practice\, out of caution and into action\, out of statistics and into stories — in short\, out of our heads and into our hearts.” \nOn the road\, the familiar is intertwined with the unfamiliar and the personal is connected with the collective. A roadside shop\, a group of trees serving as margins of a road or some random signposts act as diverse characters in innumerable dramas played out by the road. Its ever-evolving attachment with human foot and vehicular rhythm makes it a space laden with memories\, intrigues and connected histories. With an escalating visibility of road trips\, adventure stories\, capitalist investment on road aesthetics\, road as a geographical entity and political space sustains vastness of human experience.  How does one qualify the robust wholesomeness of roads? Where does one locate its connections with life itself? How has it historically been depicted in literature and culture? The editorial team is interested in considering submissions that depict various aspects of road/roads. \n\nThese are some of the issues that Parcham would like to explore and delve into for our upcoming issue due to be released by the end of March 2025. We invite Poems\, Short stories (both written originally in English and in English Translation) and Creative Non-Fiction that address issues listed above. Send in the short story to parchamonline@gmail.com with the subject line Short Story Submission. SUMMARY:PFN - PRISM international Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Swan Song
DESCRIPTION:‘I am writing only for my shadow\, which is now stretched against the wall in the light of the lamp. I must make myself known to him.’ \n— Sadegh Hedayat\, “The Blind Owl” \nIt is said that the swan sings only one beguiling song throughout the course of its life\, releasing this song at the moment of its death. This is\, of course\, untrue\, but it begs the question: what would your final gesture be? \nWhen faced with an ending\, what expression must spill forth? A swan song is a farewell\, a declaration\, a last sounding breath after a long silence. We invite you to share these final acts of resistance\, joy\, affirmation\, confession\, celebration\, or consumption. Consider whether you will share a song of fond remembrance or one of sorrow. Will it be bittersweet or might it take another form entirely? Perhaps your swan song will reflect on the past\, or perhaps it will look forward into the unknown. How will you make yourself known to your shadow? What needs to be said? \nShare these swan songs with us\, dedicate them to a particular someone\, or perform them for yourself alone. Send us your final gestures in prose\, poetry\, or hybrid forms. Make them lasting or fleeting. \nExamine your relationship with endings of all kinds: in love\, life\, or mortality\, through migration or change. What other endings might compel you to speak? Experiment with musicality in your words; imagine the sound of your final gesture\, whether it be a cry\, wail\, lullaby\, or whisper; an aria\, symphony\, or ode. Take the form in any direction that finality inspires in you. We encourage submissions that refuse to go quietly. \n  \nReply times range between six to twelve months\, and we may not be able to respond to emails regarding the status of a submission. \n\nPRISM does not publish the same writer twice in a publication year. \n\n\nGENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:\n\n\n\nSubmissions must be made through Submittable. We do not accept submissions via email or mail\, except from incarcerated writers. For all other submitters\, we charge a $3.00 reading fee per submission. Writers for whom the $3.00 fee is prohibitive are welcome to submit using the Inclusive Access option on Submittable. \nSubmissions should be typed\, double-spaced\, and paginated. Please specify the genre of your submission in your cover letter. All submissions should be set in Times New Roman\, 12-point font. \nInclude in your cover letter your full contact information (including your email address) and a bio of 50 words or fewer that makes reference to where you live. \nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, and we ask that you let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere\, OR withdraw it from our Submittable. We purchase first North American serial rights and pay $40 per printed page for prose and $45 per printed page for poetry. Contributors also receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears. \nWe encourage submissions from Indigenous writers\, writers of colour\, writers with disabilities\, LGBTQQIP2SAA+ writers\, and writers from other intersectional and marginalized groups\, including low-income earners. If you identify as one or more of the above and would like to let us know\, please mention it in your cover letter. \n\nPROSE GUIDELINES\n\n\nWe accept fiction\, creative non-fiction\, comics\, hybrid works\, and literary essays. We do not publish rhetorical\, academic\, or strictly journalistic non-fiction.\n\n\nOur preferred length for submissions is 4\,000 words or less. We have a limited page count and aim to feature a variety of voices.\n\nSubmit only one piece at a time\, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1\,000 words)\, in which case you may submit up to three pieces in a single document. Please wait to hear back before submitting again.\n\nClick here to submit prose. \nIf you have any questions about these guidelines or a piece you’ve already submitted\, please email Sierra Louie at prism.prose@ubc.ca. \n\nPOETRY GUIDELINES\n\n\nSubmit up to four poems\, to a maximum of six pages. Do NOT submit six one-page poems.\n\n\nWe welcome cross-genre and interdisciplinary poetry and poetics.\n\n\nIn your cover letter\, please specify the number of poems you are submitting and list the titles of the poems.\n\n\nPoetry submissions should be typed and single-spaced. If you would like to submit poems with alternate spacing\, please mention it in your cover letter and submit a PDF instead of a Word document.\n\n\nClick here to submit poetry.  \nIf you have any questions about these guidelines or a piece you’ve already submitted\, please email Ayda Niknami at prism.poetry@ubc.ca.

SUMMARY:PFN - About Place Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Careful/Care-full Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Careful/Care-full Collaboration\nCreative collaboration is an opportunity to summon and practice ways of being in the world and with each other that challenge myths of exceptional individualism as constructed within colonial and capitalist contexts. This type of collaboration can acknowledge and affirm that making art is not an isolated event\, and has the potential to share and/or redefine power between artists and the communities in/with which they work. The dynamic and responsive work that emerges from entangling minds\, perspectives\, and positionalities speaks and models on the page or screen\, through the body or soundwaves\, the care and imagination that is integral to community building and kin-making.  Creative collaboration is a method and commitment to seeding and nurturing webs of knowledge\, histories\, practices\, and relationships with each other and the places that are sacred to us. \nGuided by this understanding\, the Spring 2025 issue of About Place Journal invites submissions that contemplate what it means to collaborate with others through practices and processes that are careful and care-full\, that is collaborations that are cautious at various stages and shaped by an ethics of care between the artists\, for their communities\, and throughout the process of co-creating. \nKeeping in mind the core values  of the Black Earth Institute to use Art to “promote an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings and this earth we share” and to “work toward a society based on Justice\, Spirit\, and Earth Centeredness…” this issue invites joint submissions from artistic collaborators that make transparent the practices\, processes\, and creations that connect them to each other\, honor the earth\, engage with spirit\, and promote/fight for justice in ways that require careful and care-full attention to individual and communal needs and desires. \nWe are interested in submissions that define community and care\, and that consider how/why collaboration necessitates careful or care-full approaches to creating\, re-vision relationships with art\, artists\, community\, nature\, and/or the divine. \nQuestions to explore include\, but are not limited to: How does collaboration lead to care and what connects the two? How does conflict within collaboration lead to new ways to care about each other? What practices shape your work as an individual? As a collaborative unit? As a community? How are care-focused interspecies or inter-technological collaborations imagined or practiced? How does engaging with spirit or the spirits shape your creative practice? How\, when\, and why do we share our work with each other? \nWe welcome your poetry\, prose\, and hybrid forms of collaborative expression. Interviews\, recorded dialogue\, or other forms that document creative collaboration are also welcomed. Submissions from collaborative partners or groups will be prioritized over those of individuals. \nAbout Place Journal Submission Guidelines\nWork can include: \n\nPoetry: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 50 lines each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf. If your poetry submission contains special formatting\, we suggest submitting a PDF in addition to your Word doc.\nFiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction and other prose: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 4000 words each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf.\nThe total number of submitted pieces cannot exceed 5\, even if your submission includes items from several genre categories.\n\nPlease provide a numbered list with the title of each work you are submitting (1 to 5 works) in the field of the Submittable form where indicated. \nEach submission must be accompanied by a document in doc\, docx or rtf format that provides a bio for each collaborator or your group. Bios must be in the third person and not exceed 150 words each. A single artist statement\, when relevant\, may be included in this document and should also not exceed 150 words. Please include your website\, Twitter and Instagram links if desired. \nBy submitting\, you guarantee you hold the rights to the work\, and you grant About Place Journal the rights to publish the submitted work with first serial rights (FNASR). After publication\, rights revert to the author. Original\, previously unpublished work only. All pieces must be submitted through Submittable\, starting January 1\, 2025.

SUMMARY:P - Maintenant: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing & Art Seeking Submissions about: Ethics Cleansing
DESCRIPTION:MAINTENANT 19 will feature DADA work on the theme of ETHICS CLEANSING.\nIn the face of right and wrong by the breed of weak or strong\, humanity has placed far too much emphasis on belongings\, not belonging. \nThere was a time when ethical behavior had a fixity of purpose: the prevention of corruption\, favoritism\, undue influence and abuse of entrusted power. \nYet it is those who commit these transgressions that prosper most\, by completely dispensing with the need for ethics. \nWhat exists is a philosophy where the only guiding principle is to ensure the greatest profits. \nMAINTENANT 19 is a testament to the unflinching exposure of self-righteousness. We are no longer bred to be rational creatures. Denial is key. Freedom from blame is the promise. But if blame we must\, then here we must first blame the face in the mirror that accepts this way of life. \nThese times of Ethics Cleansing enable some to think they are better than others\, but if someone must be better\, then let it be ourselves. \nPlease use a separate submission form for each piece. \nIMPORTANT Specifications:\n\nYou may enter up to 4 pieces for consideration\, and all entries should center on the theme of ETHICS CLEANSING.\nAll text files must be save as WORD documents (please do NOT send PDFs). Each entry should have its own separate Word document and separate submission form.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Gulf Stream Magazine. Theme: Last Words
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we wanted to bookend our Fall issue with the Spring issue. And so\, after Issue 35: First Words\, comes Issue 36: Last Words. We want you to send us your writing that has all the charge and desperation and absolute importance of the last words you’ll ever write. We want the last words between lovers\, the utterances that eek out of the cracks of a broken heart or perhaps the lines that break the heart of another. We want the last words before everything went sideways\, before everything ended and perhaps began anew in that ending. What are the words you would share with us if they were the only things we’d remember you by? How do your characters want to be remembered? What is the secret you need us to know before you go or the truth that comes out\, that slips\, that last thing you wish we’d ever hear but can’t take back anymore now that it’s out? If you had one last thing to give us\, one last thing to say\, one last thing part of yourself that needed a voice before the silence\, what would it be? We want that. \nMore important than any theme\, we welcome all submissions as long as they’re honest and authentic – what we want most of all is your best work. Work must be original\, created without the use of AI\, and previously unpublished (with the exception of translations – see genre guidelines). \nWe acknowledge that literary spaces traditionally have centered the white\, heterosexual\, cisgender male experience at the expense of other voices. We want to break from that tradition and are therefore especially interested in reading work from those who are often marginalized in literary spaces\, including Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC); all women\, including but not limited to\, trans and cis women; LGBTQIA+ people; agender\, gender non-conforming\, and nonbinary people; people with disabilities; and people who live at the intersections of identities. \nLimits \nFiction: 5\,000 words (or 3 pieces of up to 1\,000 words) \nCreative Nonfiction: 5\,000 words \nPoetry: 3 poems per submission \nHybrid: 5\,000 words (may include up to 5 images\, B&W only) \nTranslations: 3 poems or 5\,000 words of prose (must include original piece) \nBook Reviews: 500-750 words (books must have been published within the past year) \nHow to submit \nPlease submit your work through submittable. \nNo submissions through email or mail unless you have an invite to do so from the editors. (For example\, prisoners may request to do this.) \nInclude a bio of up to fifty words along with your cover letter. \nWe do our very best to respond within 6 months\, but due to the volume of submissions\, it can sometimes take longer. \nGuidelines \n-Reading fee of $3. (For a fee waiver\, reach out to the editors). \n-International submissions are welcomed\, but English only this year. \n-Multiple submissions are welcome at $3 per submission\, but please\, no more than one submission per genre at a time. \n-Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you notify us if it’s accepted elsewhere.

SUMMARY:F - On the Premises Contest #45 Theme: Somewhere Else
DESCRIPTION:Short story contest #45. Its premise is\nSOMEWHERE ELSE \nFor this contest\, write a creative\, compelling\, well-crafted story between 1\,000 and 5\,000 words long in which someone or something important to the story is not where it/they always have been\, or where it/they would be expected to be located\, or is in the process of changing their location from where it/they have always been. The distance someone or something has moved (or is moving) is not important\, but the change in location must be important to the story. Whether this new location is an improvement or a problem is up to you. \nGENRE RULES: No fiction aimed at readers younger than 12\, no exploitative sex\, no over-the-top grossout horror. Also\, no stories that are obvious parodies of existing fictional worlds/characters created by other authors. (For the same reason\, we do not accept “fan fiction”.) SUMMARY:PFN - Submissions Open for Jelly Squid Magazine Issue 3 on the Theme of Proximity
DESCRIPTION:A brief reminder: Jelly Squid accepts work from writers of all backgrounds\, but we are especially interested in publishing work from writers who have been published six times or less (or not at all). This is not a requirement\, but if this is you\, please let us know! We want to give your work the time and attention it deserves.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJelly Squid was created out of a desire to seek out and uplift voices that feel innovative and new. We want to see work so raw and full of life that it practically bleeds – work so fresh and unique that it changes the way we read. If you feel that undeniable ache to share it\, we want to see it. Send us your experimental narratives\, your ergodic autofiction\, your unfinished-but-finished manuscripts – send your offputting\, your abstract\, your authentic.\n\n\nPlease send all submissions by email to jellysquidmag@gmail.com. Prose submissions can be up to 4\,000 words. Poetry submissions can include up to three poems that equal no more than six pages in total length (please submit all poems in one document). Please only send us one submission per reading period. We also ask that you send us a short third-person bio along with your submission. Do not include your name anywhere in the document you are submitting.\n\nIf you are previously unpublished\, please let us know in your email – one of our main goals with this publication is to uplift emerging and previously unpublished writers. We love to see work from young writers\, but please do not submit if you are under 18. Do not submit work created using AI. Also – this should go without saying\, but we want to be clear – we at Jelly Squid do not stand for transphobia\, racism\, homophobia\, misogyny\, ableism\, or any bigotry of any sort. If you send us work that expresses bigoted views\, we will automatically reject it and will not consider any future work you might send our way. \n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but make sure to let us know. If you have to withdraw a piece (or pieces)\, let us know immediately via email (please put “SUBMISSION WITHDRAWAL” in your email subject line). We do not accept previously published work. If you’ve had your work published by us before\, please wait to submit again until a full issue cycle has passed since the issue you were published in (for example\, if you had your work published in Issue 1\, you can submit to us again for Issue 3). \n\nWe do not currently offer payment upon publication as we are new and independently run\, but we hope this can change at some point in the future. Submissions are always free. All rights revert to authors upon publication.\n\nContinue reading for more detailed genre-specific submission guidelines.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPOETRY:\n We accept any form of poetry\, but especially appreciate free verse and prose poetry. We like to see poems that are raw and honest – poems that surprise us\, make us shiver\, make us think.\n Please submit no more than three poems at a time. We ask that you submit your poems together in one document (please do not include any information about yourself in said document).\n Please limit your work to 6 pages or less total. Do not submit more than one packet of poems at a time.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece(s)\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – Poem 1\, Poem 2\, and Poem 3 – Poetry Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFICTION:\n We like flash fiction\, micros\, autofiction\, character studies\, weird fiction\, and much more… any kind of work that has something to say without trying to limit itself to the confines of traditional storytelling models. We like stories that care more about expressing something unique and noteworthy than following a linear plot or a clear narrative. We do not accept science fiction or high fantasy\, but we are happy to accept pieces with sci-fi or fantasy elements. \n For flash fiction and short stories\, please limit your submission length to 4\,000 words or less. Do not submit more than one piece at a time.\n If you’re submitting micro fiction (400 words or less)\, you may submit up to three micros so long as they do not exceed six pages in total.  \n We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Fiction Submission) in the subject of your email. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNONFICTION:\n We like creative nonfiction\, but we may accept other forms of nonfiction if they feel engaging and personal. We want to hear the stories you’re not sure how to tell – the things you lie about\, the things you hide\, the things you can’t seem to get away from. We do not accept academic writing or formal criticism.\n Please limit your submission length to 4\,000 words or less. Please do not submit more than one piece at a time. We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Nonfiction Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHYBRID WORK:\n We love to see hybrid work – please don’t hesitate to send things our way that you’re not sure how to define. Finding pieces that blossom in the spaces between genres is one of the most exciting things to us about the work we get to read.   \n For hybrid work\, please limit your submission to six pages or less. You may submit up to three hybrid pieces as long as your work does not exceed six pages total. We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece(s)\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Hybrid Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re looking forward to seeing your work!

SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contests Winter Prize Theme "Rise or Ruin"
DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for our winter writing prize. The theme for this round is “Rise or Ruin.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nGood reputation or bad? Reputations can mold destinies\, define legacies\, and/or echo through history. We invite writers to investigate a reputation’s power\, potential\, and frailty. Will your hero rise or will your legends fall? Give us themes of redemption\, scandal\, honor\, or betrayal—where truth or lies can shift the direction of a life or shatter a legacy in a single moment. We’re looking for work that will uncover truths behind personas and reveal the complex layers of how we are perceived and remembered. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $325 and print publication in the Summer 2025 issue. All submissions are considered for print publication in the Summer 2025 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on March 30\, 2025. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Please see our Submission Guidelines before submitting. \nWe will select a winner by the end of June 2025\, and each entrant will receive a response. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to the winner is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:PFN - Sinister Wisdom: A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal Seeking Submissions from: SWANA Dykes
DESCRIPTION:*Submissions are restricted to lesbians.* \nThe SWANA Dykes issue of Sinister Wisdom will highlight poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, essays\, oral histories\, and genre-bending work from Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) dyke\, lesbian\, queer\, transgender\, and gender non-conforming artists. Submissions from Black transgender and gender non-conforming artists will be prioritized. \nThe SWANA region is often referred to as “The Middle East.” This terminology is Eurocentric and homogenizes a vast region that consists of people of diverse histories\, ethnicities\, cultures\, religions\, and languages. SWANA serves as a regional signifer rather than a political or racial one. Artists from the SWANA region as well as various SWANA diasporas are welcome to submit. \nWe want work that showcases SWANA dykes in their most authentic element\, work that calls upon SWANA dykes who are ready and willing to tell their stories\, SWANA dykes who are looking for a home for their stories. \nWe’re seeking work that deconstructs social categorization – racial\, gender\, nationalist\, religious\, and sexual categorizations placed upon those deemed other by imperialism\, colonialism\, and militarization. Art that interrogates the experiences of violence against diasporic people and that decries violence perpetuated within the SWANA region – such as the U.S. Muslim Ban enacted in 2017\, the Kafala System – an abusive system against migrant domestic workers\, and the 75+ years of the occupation of Palestine. \nThis issue of Sinister Wisdom aims to create conversations surrounding the diverse experiences of SWANA dykes and recognize their stories in different mediums. We’re seeking work that explores the myriad of ways dykes relate to each other – art that celebrates sex\, sensuality\, and romantic love. Art that is lustful and intimate\, that is bitter and sardonic\, that is craving and crying at the same time. Art that thrashes against hetero- and cis-normative confines\, that seeps with rage against militarization and memorializes those lost to warfare and violence. Art that is full of love for those who fight against repression and cultivate futures for their loved ones. \nPoetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, oral histories\, visual art\, and genre-bending work will be accepted through September 20th\, 2024 to March 30th\, 2025. Written pieces can be in any language; pieces written entirely in a non-English language should include an English translation. Artists are welcome to add a pseudonym under which they would like to be published if there are privacy concerns. Previous publication experience is not required. Submissions are accepted through submittable (sinisterwisdom.submittable.com) and should be submitted as one document of up to 10 pages\, along with a brief bio and any applicable social media. \nWe look forward to reading your piercing\, insightful\, critical\, hilarious work.
