DESCRIPTION:Submissions are restricted to women and nonbinary people \nEven as the conditions for human life on earth destabilize\, even as ecosystems collapse\, and bodies both human and nonhuman are uprooted from their homelands\, even as technologies enable and encourage unprecedented forms of disconnection\, human bodies are rediscovering old ways—and finding new and remarkable ways—to come into relation with place. In the last decade especially\, we’ve gained an enormous amount of scientific knowledge about trees\, about the mycelial realm\, about the waters\, about our atmosphere and cosmos.  And in many cases\, it’s been accompanied by a willingness to listen in ways that\, except for indigenous peoples\, we have not done before. \nIssue #16 (Deadline: March 17\, 2023) will center on the question of human bodies in (and out of) place. What brings us into profound relation to place—and what pulls us out? In a social world that feels less and less place-dependent\, and a physical world that is being reconfigured by climate change and habitat loss\, how do we sustain our connection to physical place? How does being in profound relation to place change everything between\, around and about us?

DESCRIPTION:When early Friends did away with the clergy they did away with hierarchy: or did they? Every generation of Friends have had debates over authority and leadership (sometimes fierce enough to lead to schisms) and the Friends Journal news column continues to publish modern-day stories which hinge on questions of power. With the rise of Quaker bureaucracies in the mid-twentieth-century\, a new kind of professional leadership has taken hold without always examining the pluses and minuses of these new roles. Quakers also have always benefited from a kind of renegade authority from below–think of a figure like Benjamin Lay\, speaking a truth to the power of the slave-owning Quaker leadership of the time\, expelled from membership. How do we encourage this kind of leadership—and how might we be discouraging it today? \nWe prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style and with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. We publish poems that use image and metaphor to recreate an experience for the reader—which show rather than tell\, “be” rather than mean. \nSubmissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them.. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought.

Lorian Hemingway and her small judging panel are dedicated to enthusiastically supporting the efforts and talent of writers of short fiction whose voices have yet to be heard.\nEligibility requirements for our 2023 competition are as follows:\n\nWhat to submit: Stories must be original unpublished fiction\, typed and double-spaced\, and may not exceed 3\,500 words in length. There are no theme or genre restrictions. Copyright remains the property of the author.\nWho may submit: The literary competition is open to all U.S. and international writers whose fiction has not appeared in a nationally distributed publication with a circulation of 5\,000 or more. Writers who have been published by an online magazine or who have self-published will be considered on an individual basis.\nSubmission requirements: Submissions may be submitted online only at this time. DESCRIPTION:Griffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle\n  \nIn his 1930 essay ‘Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren’\, John Maynard Keynes spelt out a vision of the impending utopia. Work\, he said\, will become a thing of the past. ‘For the first time since creation\,’ he predicted\, ‘man will be faced with his real\, his permanent problem – how to occupy the leisure which science…will have won for him.’ \nSo where did this vision of future past go? Like baco-foil suits and meals of protein pills\, it proved to be a concept that withered on the vine. Instead of an excess of free time to be enjoyed at leisure\, a radically different regime now dominates the developed nations: the leisure principle. \nThe leisure principle is one of work hard to play hard\, a rigorous pursuit of monetarised hedonism: YOLO\, live your best life\, have a good time all the time. It has rendered the world a pleasure garden – for those who can afford it – of interminable excess and consumption without end. \nGriffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle sets out to scrutinise the terms and conditions of this contemporary compact. From the ecstasy of the digital to the monied spectacle that is sport\, the gamification of everyday life to the flourishing hierarchy of influencers\, new codes and disciplines have emerged from this regimentation of recreation. \nWe’re looking for fiction and non-fiction that addresses the question of how we came to cede so much\, and at such a price\, just to amuse ourselves to death. Are we learning anything as we pay more to play more? DESCRIPTION:The purpose of The First Line is to jump start the imagination–to help writers break through the block that is the blank page. Each issue contains short stories that stem from a common first line; it also provides a forum for discussing favorite first lines in literature. The First Line is an exercise in creativity for writers and a chance for readers to see how many different directions we can take when we start from the same place. \nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Initially tied to the post-war phenomenon of wirtschaftswunder – the dramatic pace of economic recovery in West Germany – the seductive idea of “economic miracle” captured the imagination of policymakers especially across the old third world. From the “miracle on the Han river” in South Korea\, the “East Asian miracle\,” the South East Asian “tiger economies” to the “Chilean miracle” and the “Singapore model\,” the many iterations of the capitalist growth story have appeared in the post-war world. The idea was replayed once again at the turn of the millennium\, this time as the attention-grabbing ascendance of the Asian giants – China and India – the promise of a rising Africa or the formation of the BRICS – Brazil\, Russia\, India\, China\, South Africa – as players in the theater of the world economy.  What is common to this phenomenon across time and space is the faith the elite policymakers and the middle class put in the miraculous power of free-market capitalism to bring progress and prosperity\, a chance to harness the futures. Yet\, what has been revealed too in the past decades is the underbelly of the economic miracle\, the slow devastation that coheres growth and greater inequality\, accumulation and dispossession\, populist sweep of authoritarianism\, and violent suppression of democratic dissent. \nThis special issue invites contributions that critically trace the utopias/dystopias of economic miracles. To this end\, we seek to unpack the kind of work the idea of “miracle” performs in the domain of economy. To believe in a miracle is to be in awe\, to witness something happen that is conceptually deemed impossible—for example\, the incredibly high rates of growth and low rates of inflation of the economic miracle orchestrated by Brazil’s military dictatorship. This sense of the miraculous is what is invoked to denote the wonder of economic growth\, to reassign nations and world areas that were once deemed to be “lagging behind” as emerging markets filled with promise and possibilities. The term “economic miracle” is\, then\, intricately tied with manifold crises of poverty and destruction in times of peace and war. This historical dialectic between ruins and reconstruction\, decline and emergence remains at the heart of this phenomenon. \n  \nThe suggested themes include the following but are not limited to: \n\nPolitics of promise/optimism\nTransition to economic liberalization: shock strategies or gradual shifts\nRise of authoritarianism; violent suppression of rights\nInequality\n\nThe RHR publishes material in a variety of forms. We are not only accustomed to rebuilding and resurrecting ourselves\, our style\, our family unit\, our way of considering home\, we often welcome the opportunity to. \nFor this issue\, in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the death of one of our most beloved icons\, Nina Simone\, we ask you to submit poetry and prose about anything you can think of that could be housed on a website that engages with the idea of resurrection and LGBTQIA+ fashion. By fashion\, our definitions\, like ourselves\, branch out wide and take in multiplicities\, but here’s a list to get your brain and heart and body going: clothing\, cosmetics\, skincare\, hair (styles and products)\, shoes\, perfumery/cologne/scents\, accessories\, hosiery\, and so on. They ensure we read every submission.\n\n\nYou may submit a short bio with your submission in the body of your email\, but it is not a requirement.\nIf the work you are submitting is not easily defined\, that’s okay! Just do your best to describe them in your email (i.e.; poem/essay hybrid or visual poetry\, etc.). We love weird and experimental stuff (not specifically in the content or subject matter\, but more so in the playfulness of form).\nWe don’t publish the same writer in consecutive issues.\nSimultaneous submissions are fine with us! In our experience this often makes the piece stronger. \nWe aim to publish high quality\, thought-provoking\, literary fiction and creative nonfiction. \nUnless your piece purposefully breaks form conventions (which we are all for!) it should be professionally formatted with proper punctuation\, indented paragraphs\, etc. \nWe do not publish genre fiction (fantasy\, horror\, sci-fi\, mystery\, romance\, etc.)\, articles\, academic essays\, writing for children or YA\, so please don’t send them to us. \n  \n\n\n\nHybrid/Experimental\nHave a piece that’s not easily categorized?
