SUMMARY:N - The Letter Review Prize for Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction’s popularity is soaring due to the ever increasing demands of voracious readers who are hungry for content which is highly relevant to their interests. There’s never been a better time to be a nonfiction author\, or a more exciting time to publish nonfiction. Letter Review connects writers with the vast number of people in search of fresh nonfiction content. \nNonfiction is a broad category: we’ve all been enchanted by the spell of a compelling piece of nonfiction in one of its many evolving forms. The Letter Review Prize welcomes all forms of nonfiction including: Memoir\, journalism\, essay (including personal essay)\, fictocriticism\, creative nonfiction\, travel\, nature\, opinion\, and many other permutations. \nAny and all works which convey information about the real world are welcome. Nonfiction may inform\, it may persuade\, explore\, or divulge. It takes the shape of both anecdote and empirical observation. The inclusion of information which the author knows to be untrue or fictional is discouraged in this genre: but subjective conclusions are certainly encouraged. \nNonfiction competitions represent a wonderful opportunity for emerging writers to demonstrate their ability and secure publication. They also offer established writers an exciting arena in which to showcase new work and build their reputations. \nLetter Review believes in the power of literature\, and in the importance and magic of new writing. \nThe top three winning entries are declared the Winners\, and share equally in the Prize pool of $1000 USD. Each Winner’s entry is published\, accompanied by its own attractive original commissioned artwork. Additionally\, there is a high likelihood the Winners will be included in the Letter Review Anthology. To recognize the extraordinary talent of the writers who do not place in the top three\, twenty entries will be longlisted\, and ten shortlisted. Offering further opportunities for writers\, all entries are considered for publication. \nTo raise the visibilty of our writers\, Winners are considered for submission to the Pushcart Prize\, other prestigious anthologies such as Best of the Net\, and our end of year anthology. \nThe Letter Review Prize is judged blind to ensure all entrants including emerging and diverse writers\, along with established writers\, have an equal chance of success. We do not assign entries to anonymous readers: Every entry is personally read by our highly qualified Judges. Winners are widely promoted on our social media channels (FB 34\,000 members) and at our website (50\,000 monthly visitors). Letter Review is a proud member of the international Community of Literary Magazines and Presses\, and we adhere to the CLMP Contest Code of Ethics. \nRead our wonderful previous winning entries by clicking here. \nRead inspiring comments from our community about the life changing impact of the Prize here.\nHow To Enter \n\nWe are seeking entries between 0 – 5000 words.\nThe Prize is open to anyone\, from anywhere in the world.\nThere are no restrictions: all nonfiction entries welcome.\nIt costs $20 USD to enter one submission\, $35 to enter two (save $5)\, and $45 to enter three (save $15).\nPlease include a short biography (suitable for publication) of less than 200 words in the Cover Letter section.\nInclude a synopsis or abstract of less than 300 words which clearly summarises the content of your submission including your conclusion (don’t leave any surprises please).\nEnsure the file name of your document is only the title of your entry. Do not include your name inside your entry document or in the file name as the Prize is judged blind.\nYou may enter as many times as you wish.\nNo AI generated content please.\nThe judges will be Ol James and Kita Das.\nFormat: Submit entry (or entries) in a single document\, written in English. The entry must be original work. No translations please.\nYour entry must be entirely original\, unpublished\, and free from any claims by other parties. No ‘retellings’ or contemporizations. SUMMARY:P - Free the Verse Poetry Magazine Seeking Submissions. Theme: "Do You Smell Burning?"
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Submissions\nDo You Smell Burning?\nIssue 07 | Free the Verse \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are now accepting submissions for our autumn issue. While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Do You Smell Burning?’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. We love free verse poems that take familiar situations and turn them on their head\, using unusual metaphors and drawing parallels no one else would see. Poems with a sense of place and story are always welcome\, as are experimental pieces. You can read our latest issue\, I Don’t Want To Talk About It\, to get a sense of the poetry we publish. \nThe deadline for this issue is August 29th\, 2023. Please read our general submission guidelines below before sending us your work: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease submit up to 3 poems per issue\, in one submission. \n\n\n‘Pulling Teeth’ is the title of the issue\, and therefore should not be the title of your poem. \n\n\nYour work must be original and unpublished\, either in print on online. We will accept work that has appeared on your personal website or equivalent. \n\n\nPlease include a brief third-person bio with your submission\, up to a maximum of 50 words. You are welcome to include details of previous publications\, but this will have no impact on whether your poems will be selected for our magazine. \n\n\nAt this time\, we only accept poems written in English. You are welcome to include words and phrases from other languages. \n\n\nIt is free to submit your work. At present we do not offer compensation to our authors. If your work is accepted for publication\, it will be published in our digital magazine. \n\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions. If one of your poems is accepted for publication elsewhere\, please let us know immediately via our contact page. \n\n\nYou must be over 18 years old to submit.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Exposed Brick Literary Magazine. Theme: "Time Capsule"
DESCRIPTION:If you could capture this moment in a bottle and preserve it for the future\, what would that look like? Or what have you preserved that has stood the test of time? With this issue\, we want to take the best and most potent markers of our time and put them in a metaphoric time capsule. We want to know what you value and how those values will look after the test of time. \n  \nTo us\, “Time Capsule” means: \n1. What is something that reflects your values? \n2. How would you like to be remembered in the future? \n3. What is the essence of right now? \n4. Which things have been preserved from the past that are still relevant now? \n5. What are things you want to preserve? \n6. An artifact with its significance of preservation \n7. What has your family been through that has gotten them to this point and is important for future generations to know about. \n8. What is important in your culture that needs to be preserved? \n9. But as always\, it can mean whatever you want! \n  \nWe are excited to see your creative take on this theme.

SUMMARY:P - Seeking Form Poetry for Songs of Eretz Poetry Review
DESCRIPTION:Form Poetry \nThe next issue’s theme is form poetry. The choice is yours\, but you must “specify” the form under the title of your poem. For instance\, if you write a sonnet\, tell us it is a Shakespearean Sonnet\, Modern Sonnet\, etc. (Any sonnet\, including “modern\,” must have 14 lines.) Or if you write a version of the ghazal\, name the type of ghazal\, such as “modern” ghazal. The same goes for all other form poem categories\, including the examples below: \nBlank verse (rather than Free verse) \nSonnet (no matter the type you choose\, it must have 14 lines) \nEpic \nHaiku \nSenru \nVillanelle \nGhazal \nQuatrain \nRondel \nOde \nBallad \nWriting form poetry is a great way to hone your technique. If you don’t typically practice forms\, you may want to draft a few now\, well before the next deadline. \nRemember\, specify the exact form you have chosen for each submission and place it under the poem’s title. If it is a “modern” sonnet\, say so\, don’t simply name it a sonnet. Make certain all other required information is included in the submission as listed under the GUIDELINES tab (Item #3). \nHOW TO SUBMIT\nFailure to follow these simple guidelines will result in your submission being discarded or returned to you unread!\n\nPlease resist the urge to include anything with your submission that we do not specifically request\, especially your bio (we like to read as blindly as possible)\, credits (we treat the novice and the experienced equally)\, or explanatory notes (if you believe your poem requires an explanation\, please revise it until it doesn’t).\n\n\n Submit up to THREE poems to:  \n\nSubmissions@SongsOfEretz.com \nThere is no fee to submit.  \n\n Your Subject Line should be formatted as follows:  [Poetry Submission][Title][Name Specific Type of Form poem][Poet’s Last Name]\n If you are submitting more than one poem\, each should appear in a separate email\, and each email should include a separate cover letter.  If your poem has multiple numbered sections\, each section will “count” as ONE poem.  If your poem contains more than three sections\, query first.\nYour poem(s) must appear in the body of your email(s).  WE DO NOT ACCEPT ATTACHMENTS FOR POETRY.  If your poem needs to be presented in an attachment due to special formatting\, query first.\nInclude a cover letter in the body of your email(s) with answers to the following questions\n\n(and remember NOT to include a biography at this process stage): \n– Is yours a simultaneous submission or not?  We DO accept them. \n– How did you discover Songs of Eretz? \n– How would you like us to indicate your name if we publish your work (ie: your byline\, for example\, “By Sammie Smith”)?  NOTE:  We do NOT accept work composed by a collaboration of poets or artists. \n– What is your contact information?  Include at least your city & state.  Include your country if you reside outside of the United States.  It is strongly recommended that you include your phone number as well\, in case we need last-minute input from you (this has happened).

SUMMARY:N - A Brand New Word in the End Drops Out Anthology Seeking Submissions on the Theme: "Mental Health"
DESCRIPTION:Stay Connected to Oi\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Finally\, to hinder the description of illness in literature\, there is the poverty of the language. English\, which can express the thoughts of Hamlet and the tragedy of Lear\, has no words for the shiver and the headache. It has all grown one way. The merest schoolgirl\, when she falls in love\, has Shakespeare or Keats to speak her mind for her; but let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry. There is nothing ready made for him. He is forced to coin words himself\, and\, taking his pain in one hand\, and a lump of pure sound in the other (as perhaps the people of Babel did in the beginning)\, so to crush them together that a brand new word in the end drops out. Probably it will be something laughable.”\n\n \n                                         -from On Being Ill by Virginia Woolf\n\n\n\n\n\nThe editors of West Trade Review seek creative nonfiction that engages with the ideas of mental health and mental well-being. Specifically\, we’d like to read personal stories that are raw\, honest\, and vulnerable in their explorations of mental health or mental well-being and their intersection with inequality\, access to healthcare\, the need for accessible\, quality mental health care\, and/or the need for open conversations about mental health and practices that contribute to mental well-being.\n\n \nWriters are encouraged to speak their truth\, to share their challenges\, losses\, and triumphs. Simply creatively explore these ideas and the potential themes below to give voice to a truth that is often difficult to verbalize\, as Woolf so eloquently expresses.\n\n \nWe are excited to read your work and share your stories with others.\n\n \n \n \nPotential themes are (but not limited to):\n\n\n\n\n\nthe challenges of living with a mentally ill adult children\n\n\n\n\n\nunderstanding and navigating neurodivergencies\n\n\n\n\n\nnavigating and healing from traumatic experiences\n\n\n\n\n\naddiction\n\n\n\n\n\nchronic disease\n\n\n\n\n\nanxiety or depression\n\n\n\n\n\nthe intersection of homelessness and mental illness\n\n\n\n\n\ngrief and loss\n\n\n\n\n\nthe importance of self-care for mental well-being\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \nGuidelines:\n\n \n \n– Submit one cnf piece of up to 6\,000 words. Please submit a double-spaced Microsoft Word file.\n\n \n -Include a clear title of the work.\n\n \n  -Include a short 3rd person biography of no more than 150 words. Work submitted without a biography will not be considered.\n\n \n  -If your work is a simultaneous submission\, please let us know immediately if it is published elsewhere.\n\n \n  -Writers may not submit more than once per reading period\n\n \n \nEntries should be submitted to the appropriate genre category at the following link:\n\n \nhttps://westtradereview.submittable.com/submit

SUMMARY:PFN - Yolk Literary Journal Seeking Submission on the Theme: "Solastalgia"
DESCRIPTION:Submit To Our Print Publication\nYolk is now accepting submissions for Volume 3.2. \nWhile we will continue accepting international submissions for our digital publication\, yolk exclusively publishes Canadian contributors in print. The theme for this issue is: Solastalgia. \nSolastalgia. Tightening at the smell of smoke. Recoiling at the sight of receding glaciers. Close the news app. Shudder in a foreign home. I’m sorry for the heat. I’m sorry for the mercury. This is a new kind of grief\, with a nascent voice. Speak to it. \nFor our publication\, we consider a Canadian to be:\n– Anyone with Canadian citizenship or permanent residency\, residing here or abroad.\n– Anyone that currently resides in Canada.‍ \n‍Given Canada’s deeply colonial and convoluted history\, the literary and artistic works that have been produced within its landscape have permuted considerably\, resulting in not a singular national literary voice\, but a multitude of perspectives\, styles\, and literatures. While we love to read submissions from around the world\, as a Montreal-based literary journal\, we feel it is important to provide a platform that best showcases the diverse voices\, talents\, and words that form Canada’s distinct literary sphere. ‍ \n‍Should you have any questions about whether or not you can submit\, don’t hesitate to contact us. The submission deadline is August 14th\, 2023. \nBefore submitting your work\, please read our submission guidelines below. ‍ \n‍During the submission window for 3.2\, we kindly ask those submitting to print to include ‘3.2 Print Publication Submission’ in the subject line of your email\, while international contributors should include ‘Digital Publication Submission’.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Griffith Review. Theme: "Animal Magic"
DESCRIPTION:GriffithReview82\nAnimal Magic – Poetry submissions open\n\nWhether it’s man’s best friend or the king of the jungle\, animals occupy a central place in our social\, emotional and cultural lives. We’re happy as clams or pigs in mud; we hold our horses or take a lion’s share of what we want; we avoid the elephant in the room or try not to open a can of worms. \nThis edition of Griffith Review visits habitats near and far\, wild and domestic – the backyard and the dog park\, the jungle and the desert\, the field and the farm – to examine our complex interactions with creatures furry or scaled\, four-legged or eight-limbed\, winged or feathered. How has the human–animal bond evolved over the centuries? Is it ethical to have a pet? Why are so many of us averse to insects when their extinction would spell the end of life on Earth? And what truly separates us from the creatures we share the planet with? Griffith Review 82: Animal Magic lets the cat out of the bag to answer all these questions and more. \nThough submissions need not be themed\, we welcome poems that reflect on this edition’s topic. \nYou can submit up to four individual poems\, each no longer than two pages. \nSubmissions close: 11.59 pm AEST\, 6 August 2023 \nPublication date: November 2023

SUMMARY:PFN - Dark Matter: Women Witnessing Seeking Submissions on the Theme: "Human Bodies in (and Out of) Place" Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Even as the conditions for human life on earth destabilize\, even as ecosystems collapse\, and bodies both human and nonhuman are uprooted from their homelands\, even as technologies enable and encourage unprecedented forms of disconnection\, human bodies are rediscovering old ways—and finding new and remarkable ways—to come into relation with place. In the last decade especially\, we’ve gained an enormous amount of scientific knowledge about trees\, about the mycelial realm\, about the waters\, about our atmosphere and cosmos.  And in many cases\, it’s been accompanied by a willingness to listen in ways that\, except for indigenous peoples\, we have not done before. \nIssue #17 (Deadline: August 4\, 2023) will once again center on the question of human bodies in (and out of) place. What brings us into profound relation to place—and what pulls us out? In a social world that feels less and less place-dependent\, and a physical world that is being reconfigured by climate change and habitat loss\, how do we sustain our connection to physical place? How does being in profound relation to place change everything between\, around and about us? \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\nDark Matter: Women Witnessing publishes writing created in response to an age of massive species loss and ecological collapse. It is a home for dreams\, visions\, and communications with the nonhuman world\, especially those with messages for how we might begin to heal our broken relationship to the earth. We welcome writing in all forms and genres. All poetry and fiction must be accompanied by notes bridging to the journal’s mission. Context and commentary are required for dreams\, visions\, and other communications. We welcome submissions by women and nonbinary writers and artists. \nDreams and Visions features dreams\, visions\, nightmares or communications with nonhuman beings that respond in some way to this era of escalating danger and darkness—and ideally provide clarity and/or guidance. Commentary is required.

DESCRIPTION:Issue sixteen.2 / Fall 2023\nSUBMISSIONS OPEN\nMundane is Radical\nDeadline: August 3\, 2023\nEmail: to issue16.2submissions@gmail.com \nGuest editor: Ashley Marshall \nBlack artists and thinkers to the front. Our “Mundane is Radical”-themed issue of Hamilton Arts & Letters will include poetry\, creative nonfiction\, fiction\, hybrid forms\, and fabulism that is preoccupied with themes of queer ecologies\, biomimicry\, fables\, flânerie and its remixes\, critical geography\, afro-bubble gum\, astroprojection\, urbanism\, guerilla gardening\, city design\, access/ability\, food apartheid\, autopoiesis and its metaphors\, humanisms\, and QTBIPOC inside or outside “natural” spaces. We seek work that incorporates ideas\, language\, characters\, main or sub- themes\, images\, and artwork related to speculative fiction\, n/Nature\, architecture\, freedom\, and much more. Send it and we will look at it. Please send by August 3 to\nissue16.2submissions@gmail.com \nEditor/Curator’s Note: Storytelling\, from science fiction and fantasy\, to fables and folklore\, has informed our thinking about nature and the built environment. This issue turns to the arts to foreground and forecast what is next for nature\, food justice\, water preservation\, climate action\, and afro-/Indigenous futurisms. \nDavid Harvey says\, “In the history of economic crises\, and through the deployment of the spatial fix\, there is a persistent tension between capital that is invested in the built environment for longer periods of time — ‘fixed capital’ — and the competitive drive towards ever greater expansion and mobility that renders existing infrastructure obsolete … capitalism is always on the look out for another ‘fix’.” (Mobility\, Crisis\, Utopia – An Interview with David Harvey \nThere is a plan for us\, but with enough imagination\, we can think\, dream\, and organize ourselves into alternative modes of being\, eating\, gathering\, growing\, designing\, and building. How do we exist in ways that are sustainable\, reproduceable\, and affirming? How do we write racialized and queer characters whose futurity is realistic and humanity is futuristic? What imaginative labour can give us tools toward freedom? How can leisurely activities restore us\, playlists energize us\, cookbooks gather us\, walking alert us\, and being bored or exhausted to death be resisted?
