SUMMARY:N - A Brand New Word in the End Drops Out Anthology Seeking Submissions on the Theme: "Mental Health"
DESCRIPTION:Stay Connected to Oi\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Finally\, to hinder the description of illness in literature\, there is the poverty of the language. English\, which can express the thoughts of Hamlet and the tragedy of Lear\, has no words for the shiver and the headache. It has all grown one way. The merest schoolgirl\, when she falls in love\, has Shakespeare or Keats to speak her mind for her; but let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry. There is nothing ready made for him. He is forced to coin words himself\, and\, taking his pain in one hand\, and a lump of pure sound in the other (as perhaps the people of Babel did in the beginning)\, so to crush them together that a brand new word in the end drops out. Probably it will be something laughable.”\n\n \n                                         -from On Being Ill by Virginia Woolf\n\n\n\n\n\nThe editors of West Trade Review seek creative nonfiction that engages with the ideas of mental health and mental well-being. Specifically\, we’d like to read personal stories that are raw\, honest\, and vulnerable in their explorations of mental health or mental well-being and their intersection with inequality\, access to healthcare\, the need for accessible\, quality mental health care\, and/or the need for open conversations about mental health and practices that contribute to mental well-being.\n\n \nWriters are encouraged to speak their truth\, to share their challenges\, losses\, and triumphs. Simply creatively explore these ideas and the potential themes below to give voice to a truth that is often difficult to verbalize\, as Woolf so eloquently expresses.\n\n \nWe are excited to read your work and share your stories with others.\n\n \n \n \nPotential themes are (but not limited to):\n\n\n\n\n\nthe challenges of living with a mentally ill adult children\n\n\n\n\n\nunderstanding and navigating neurodivergencies\n\n\n\n\n\nnavigating and healing from traumatic experiences\n\n\n\n\n\naddiction\n\n\n\n\n\nchronic disease\n\n\n\n\n\nanxiety or depression\n\n\n\n\n\nthe intersection of homelessness and mental illness\n\n\n\n\n\ngrief and loss\n\n\n\n\n\nthe importance of self-care for mental well-being\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \nGuidelines:\n\n \n \n– Submit one cnf piece of up to 6\,000 words. Please submit a double-spaced Microsoft Word file.\n\n \n -Include a clear title of the work.\n\n \n  -Include a short 3rd person biography of no more than 150 words. Work submitted without a biography will not be considered.\n\n \n  -If your work is a simultaneous submission\, please let us know immediately if it is published elsewhere.\n\n \n  -Writers may not submit more than once per reading period\n\n \n \nEntries should be submitted to the appropriate genre category at the following link:\n\n \nhttps://westtradereview.submittable.com/submit

SUMMARY:PFN - Yolk Literary Journal Seeking Submission on the Theme: "Solastalgia"
DESCRIPTION:Submit To Our Print Publication\nYolk is now accepting submissions for Volume 3.2. \nWhile we will continue accepting international submissions for our digital publication\, yolk exclusively publishes Canadian contributors in print. The theme for this issue is: Solastalgia. \nSolastalgia. Tightening at the smell of smoke. Recoiling at the sight of receding glaciers. Close the news app. Shudder in a foreign home. I’m sorry for the heat. I’m sorry for the mercury. This is a new kind of grief\, with a nascent voice. Speak to it. \nFor our publication\, we consider a Canadian to be:\n– Anyone with Canadian citizenship or permanent residency\, residing here or abroad.\n– Anyone that currently resides in Canada.‍ \n‍Given Canada’s deeply colonial and convoluted history\, the literary and artistic works that have been produced within its landscape have permuted considerably\, resulting in not a singular national literary voice\, but a multitude of perspectives\, styles\, and literatures. While we love to read submissions from around the world\, as a Montreal-based literary journal\, we feel it is important to provide a platform that best showcases the diverse voices\, talents\, and words that form Canada’s distinct literary sphere. ‍ \n‍Should you have any questions about whether or not you can submit\, don’t hesitate to contact us. The submission deadline is August 14th\, 2023. \nBefore submitting your work\, please read our submission guidelines below. ‍ \n‍During the submission window for 3.2\, we kindly ask those submitting to print to include ‘3.2 Print Publication Submission’ in the subject line of your email\, while international contributors should include ‘Digital Publication Submission’.

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Griffith Review. Theme: "Animal Magic"
DESCRIPTION:GriffithReview82\nAnimal Magic – Poetry submissions open\n\nWhether it’s man’s best friend or the king of the jungle\, animals occupy a central place in our social\, emotional and cultural lives. We’re happy as clams or pigs in mud; we hold our horses or take a lion’s share of what we want; we avoid the elephant in the room or try not to open a can of worms. \nThis edition of Griffith Review visits habitats near and far\, wild and domestic – the backyard and the dog park\, the jungle and the desert\, the field and the farm – to examine our complex interactions with creatures furry or scaled\, four-legged or eight-limbed\, winged or feathered. How has the human–animal bond evolved over the centuries? Is it ethical to have a pet? Why are so many of us averse to insects when their extinction would spell the end of life on Earth? And what truly separates us from the creatures we share the planet with? Griffith Review 82: Animal Magic lets the cat out of the bag to answer all these questions and more. \nThough submissions need not be themed\, we welcome poems that reflect on this edition’s topic. \nYou can submit up to four individual poems\, each no longer than two pages. \nSubmissions close: 11.59 pm AEST\, 6 August 2023 \nPublication date: November 2023

SUMMARY:PFN - Dark Matter: Women Witnessing Seeking Submissions on the Theme: "Human Bodies in (and Out of) Place" Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Even as the conditions for human life on earth destabilize\, even as ecosystems collapse\, and bodies both human and nonhuman are uprooted from their homelands\, even as technologies enable and encourage unprecedented forms of disconnection\, human bodies are rediscovering old ways—and finding new and remarkable ways—to come into relation with place. In the last decade especially\, we’ve gained an enormous amount of scientific knowledge about trees\, about the mycelial realm\, about the waters\, about our atmosphere and cosmos.  And in many cases\, it’s been accompanied by a willingness to listen in ways that\, except for indigenous peoples\, we have not done before. \nIssue #17 (Deadline: August 4\, 2023) will once again center on the question of human bodies in (and out of) place. What brings us into profound relation to place—and what pulls us out? In a social world that feels less and less place-dependent\, and a physical world that is being reconfigured by climate change and habitat loss\, how do we sustain our connection to physical place? How does being in profound relation to place change everything between\, around and about us? \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\nDark Matter: Women Witnessing publishes writing created in response to an age of massive species loss and ecological collapse. It is a home for dreams\, visions\, and communications with the nonhuman world\, especially those with messages for how we might begin to heal our broken relationship to the earth. We welcome writing in all forms and genres. All poetry and fiction must be accompanied by notes bridging to the journal’s mission. Context and commentary are required for dreams\, visions\, and other communications. We welcome submissions by women and nonbinary writers and artists. \nDreams and Visions features dreams\, visions\, nightmares or communications with nonhuman beings that respond in some way to this era of escalating danger and darkness—and ideally provide clarity and/or guidance. Commentary is required.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Hamilton Arts & Letters Magazine. Theme: "Mundane is Radical"
DESCRIPTION:Issue sixteen.2 / Fall 2023\nSUBMISSIONS OPEN\nMundane is Radical\nDeadline: August 3\, 2023\nEmail: to issue16.2submissions@gmail.com \nGuest editor: Ashley Marshall \nBlack artists and thinkers to the front. Our “Mundane is Radical”-themed issue of Hamilton Arts & Letters will include poetry\, creative nonfiction\, fiction\, hybrid forms\, and fabulism that is preoccupied with themes of queer ecologies\, biomimicry\, fables\, flânerie and its remixes\, critical geography\, afro-bubble gum\, astroprojection\, urbanism\, guerilla gardening\, city design\, access/ability\, food apartheid\, autopoiesis and its metaphors\, humanisms\, and QTBIPOC inside or outside “natural” spaces. We seek work that incorporates ideas\, language\, characters\, main or sub- themes\, images\, and artwork related to speculative fiction\, n/Nature\, architecture\, freedom\, and much more. Send it and we will look at it. Please send by August 3 to\nissue16.2submissions@gmail.com \nEditor/Curator’s Note: Storytelling\, from science fiction and fantasy\, to fables and folklore\, has informed our thinking about nature and the built environment. This issue turns to the arts to foreground and forecast what is next for nature\, food justice\, water preservation\, climate action\, and afro-/Indigenous futurisms. \nDavid Harvey says\, “In the history of economic crises\, and through the deployment of the spatial fix\, there is a persistent tension between capital that is invested in the built environment for longer periods of time — ‘fixed capital’ — and the competitive drive towards ever greater expansion and mobility that renders existing infrastructure obsolete … capitalism is always on the look out for another ‘fix’.” (Mobility\, Crisis\, Utopia – An Interview with David Harvey \nThere is a plan for us\, but with enough imagination\, we can think\, dream\, and organize ourselves into alternative modes of being\, eating\, gathering\, growing\, designing\, and building. How do we exist in ways that are sustainable\, reproduceable\, and affirming? How do we write racialized and queer characters whose futurity is realistic and humanity is futuristic? What imaginative labour can give us tools toward freedom? How can leisurely activities restore us\, playlists energize us\, cookbooks gather us\, walking alert us\, and being bored or exhausted to death be resisted?

Has something lead to a possibility they would have never otherwise imagined? \nSometimes the way forward isn’t simple\, and often it’s these detours through life that make for compelling\, hopeful\, significant\, surprising\, or comical stories – stories that linger on characterisation\, resilience\, unorthodox experiences\, and new ways of looking at the world. That stick with us after the last sentence is done. \nJudges are looking for the following: \n\nWriting ability: correct tense\, point of view\, minimal redundant words and adverbs\, show not tell.\nStory arc: rising tension\, climax\, resolution.\nAdherence to the competition theme.\nSpelling & Grammar.\nLayout conforms to the competition guidelines.\n\nRead this feature from the 2020 competition for notes from the judges on what made the published 40 stand out from the field. \nWant an insight into the types of stories that win first prize and get published in our anthology? \nThen grab a copy of the 2021 Anthology\, Jump and find out. Details here. \nPrize Pool : \n\nWinner: $250AU Hawkeye Gift Voucher + Anthology front cover design based on winner’s story.\nShortlisted (2nd – 4th placed) names published.\nTop 40 stories will be published in an anthology. All those published receive a free copy of the anthology.\n\nShortlisted (Top 10) and Longlisted (11-40) finalists names will be published on www.hawkeyebooks.com.au. \nJudges can’t wait to read your stories!

SUMMARY:PF - The First Line Literary Journal Seeking Submissions that Begin: "As Soon as Harriet Entered the Building\, She Headed to the Seventh Floor"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2022 \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story or poem be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \n\n\n\n\nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four to five weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote to our international writers: Postage cost for sending author copies overseas is a little high\, so we are reducing international author payment by the amount it would cost to send one author copy overseas. However\, if you would like to receive an electronic version of the issue (PDF) instead of a hard copy\, author payment will not change.

SUMMARY:PFN - Black Fox Accepting Contest Submissions for a New Series Called Fox Tales. Theme: "Music"
DESCRIPTION:Current Contest\n\n\nJuly 2023 Fox Tales Contest: Music \nBlack Fox is now accepting contest submissions for a new series called Fox Tales. The theme for July 2023 is “Music.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWe’ve been looking for ways to have more fun with our contests\, and we’re excited to share a new series of month-long contests that will run in between our two main contests. This will allow us to publish more writers and creative work outside of our usual biannual issues! \nFox Tales will be published as “mini books” on our Instagram account and website starting Fall 2023! Instagram carousels remind us of turning book pages\, and we thought: Wouldn’t it be fun to transform carousels into mini books? We will design carousel pages for the winning stories and poetry. Writers should keep in mind word counts. We suggest keeping submissions to 500 words. Poets may submit 3-5 poems but should keep in mind that they must fit on 8 Instagram squares. \nIf you make playlists for your characters or works in progress\, this contest is for you! We’re looking for work inspired by your favorite songs or work that has music represented in some way. What mood\, feeling\, or characters can your favorite songs inspire in a story or poem? Submit a captivating piece of writing that captures the energy of a song\, its impact on your life\, or the enchanting stories that lie behind it. Whether you send in a personal reflection\, a fictional narrative\, or a poetic tribute\, we can’t wait to see how your words harmonize with the theme! \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose 1-3 winners. The prize is $100 and publication as an Instagram carousel mini book and on our website as part of our Fox Tales series. Winners will also receive a Black Fox Writer Pack which contains writerly items from our sister company Writer’s Atelier and more. In each pack: \n\nOne back issue of Black Fox Literary Magazine\nA one-year digital subscription to Poets & Writers\nA copy of The Write Gym Workbook by Racquel Henry\nLittle Book of Writing Affirmations by Racquel Henry\nWriting Stickers\nA “Just F***ing Write” Pencil\nA “Get the Book Done” Tote Bag\nSticky notes\n\nThe contest entry fee is $9 and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on July 31\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 500 words. For poetry\, send 3-5 poems in the same document\, as long as they can fit on 8 Instagram squares. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Please see our Submission Guidelines before submitting. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager found here.  We only accept online submissions. We DO NOT accept submissions by email. If submissions are sent via email they will automatically be discarded without notice. Send only one submission per submission period. We do not accept previously published work. We accept simultaneous submissions\, but we ask that you withdraw your work via Submittable (add a note if withdrawing one poem at a time) if your work is accepted elsewhere. Past contributors\, please wait until at least one full submission period has passed before submitting again.  Please note: we aim for a 3-4 month response time\, but please feel free to inquire if you haven’t heard from us in 6 months. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by mid-September\, and each entrant will receive a response to their submission. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to winners is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:P - Last Leaves Magazine Call for Submissions. Theme: "Feast"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\n\n\nSubmissions are OPEN until July 31st at 11:59p.m. EST. \nTheme for Issue 7: FEAST \nCome one\, come all\, please join us under the falling leaves for a feast like none other. This October\, the seventh issue of Last Leaves will make your mouth water. In preparation\, please send us your favorite foods in the form of artwork and poetry. We’re looking for harvest poems\, recipe poems\, last meal poems. But we don’t just want some food. We want a feast\, the kind that makes you sick. We want the Steward of Gondor eating tomatoes\, if you know what I mean. We want gluttony\, we want to feel gorged\, we want to forget that we’ve ever felt hungry. Send us your best\, the feast is coming. \nPlease submit your poetry via email to lastleavesmag@gmail.com. Failure to adhere to the guidelines may invalidate your submission. If you have any questions or concerns surrounding the guidelines\, please send us an email prior to submitting. We’re always happy to help! As always\, our themes are very loose and open for interpretation. We provide guidelines\, but by all means take it and run with it! \nSubmission guidelines: \n\n\nFor poetry: Please put “Poetry Submission” in the subject line. Send up to 5 poems (no more than 10 pages) as a single Word (.doc or .docx) attachment. Please start each poem on a new page. All work should be single-spaced and in Times New Roman\, 12-point font. \n\n\nDo not include your name or contact information in the documents. \n\n\nPlease include a brief 50-word bio in the body of your email. Include your name as you would like it to appear in the magazine\, your email\, and links to your website and/or social media (if desired). We will trim the bio as-needed if it exceeds the word count. \n\n\nIf you’ve submitted to us in the past\, we kindly ask that you start a new email thread for each submission window (i.e.\, instead of replying to your previous submission\, start a new email with the subject line for the category you’re submitting to). \n\n\n

SUMMARY:PFN - NonBinary Review #33 Seeking Submissions. Theme: "World Tour"
DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is open for submissions on the theme of “world tour.” From the first migration of our ancestors out of Africa to the globe trotting of the jet set\, our planet and our culture have been shaped by people traveling vast distances. Some traveled for survival\, some for wealth\, some for power\, and some traveled to satisfy their curiosity. We’re looking for stories about epic journeys over vast distances with many destinations. We’re looking for travels that have changed the way people have viewed their world. We’re looking for travels that have broadened the outlook\, not just of the traveler\, but of civilization. \nWe’re not looking for personal travelogues\, unless you’re Columbus\, Magellan\, etc.\, in which case\, we have some questions. We’re also not looking for stories of family’s moves to the new world. We also don’t want interplanetary travel-type science fiction. \nWe have different teams evaluating poetry and prose. If you submit to the wrong genre\, your submission will be declined.  All submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme and be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman\, or they will be rejected. \nPoetry: NonBinary Review pays a $10 flat fee for poetry and you may include up to THREE poems may be included per submission\, but each must be a separate file.\nProse: NonBinary Review pays 1¢ per word for prose with a limit of 3000 words.

SUMMARY:P - Free the Verse Poetry Magazine Seeking Submissions. Theme: "Do You Smell Burning?"
DESCRIPTION:We are now accepting submissions for our autumn issue. While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Do You Smell Burning?’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. We love free verse poems that take familiar situations and turn them on their head\, using unusual metaphors and drawing parallels no one else would see. Poems with a sense of place and story are always welcome\, as are experimental pieces. You can read our latest issue\, I Don’t Want To Talk About It\, to get a sense of the poetry we publish. \nThe deadline for this issue is August 29th\, 2023. We will accept work that has appeared on your personal website or equivalent. \n\n\nPlease include a brief third-person bio with your submission\, up to a maximum of 50 words. SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submissions to Friends Journal Theme: "Ecumenical & Interfaith Friends"
DESCRIPTION:We prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought. Our readers particularly value articles on: exploring Friends’ testimonies and beliefs; integrating faith\, work\, and home lives; historical and contemporary Friends; social concerns and actions; and the variety of beliefs across the branches of Friends. \nFriends Journal prefers articles with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. Submissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them. \nOctober Issue\, due July 17th\nThere was once a time during which Quakers mostly kept to themselves. But modern Friends are very involved in the world and spend a lot of time working with people of all faiths. \nOur October issue will look at Ecumenical and Interfaith Friends. Some questions that might be addressed: \n\nWhat do Friends raised in other traditions bring to us?\nWhat about Friends whose spirituality also embraces other faiths?\nHow do we make common ground with other Christians?\nWhat is the balance between keeping to our own traditions and opening up to others?\nIs there a danger of being too ecumenical? Is it possible to lose our own beliefs?\n\nFast Facts \n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.\nSubmissions close July 17\, 2023.\nQuestions? Email editors@friendsjournal.org

SUMMARY:PFN - Redivider Journal Seeking Submissions with the Theme: "Blurred Genre"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nBLURRED GENRE: SUMMER ’23 SPECIAL EDITION\nRedivider’s Summer ’23 Blurred Genre special edition explores the fluid boundaries between genres. We welcome all hybrid\, genre-blurring and experimental work. Submit your flash nonfiction\, visual sci-fi poetry\, memoir comics\, mixed-media fiction collage with a dash of cultural critique\, digital or drawn media—all fall in the broad spectrum of possibilities! All contributors will be paid $30 for accepted work. \nPlease send us one piece per submission of 3\,000 words or less (ten pages or less of graphic media). All submissions must be the author’s original\, unpublished work. \nIn your cover letter\, please specify in a sentence how your submitted piece blurs the line between textual genre. \nSubmissions will be open until July 15. The issue will be released in late summer. \nFICTION\nWord count: 1\,200–6\,000 words \nPlease submit one short fiction piece at a time. Stories shorter than 1\,200 words should be submitted under Flash Fiction. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. Redivider will happily consider genre fiction with strong enough prose\, though hard science fiction\, high fantasy\, etc. will probably fit better at another journal. \nThings we already see a lot of:\n• Excessive body writing (hands\, eyes\, eyebrows\, throats\, mouths\, breaths\, chills in the spine\, etc.)\n• Stories about terminal illness\n• Privileged family fiction\n• Descriptions of the sun and its rays and the color of the sky on the opening page \nThings we wish we saw more:\n• Satisfying endings\n• Characters with complex motives\n• Dark humor\n• Consistent voice throughout the piece\n• Elements of sci-fi and mysticism\n• Psychological thrillers\n• Real science and real history utilized for theme and setting\, (i.e. background research)\n• Cli-fi \nFLASH FICTION\nWord count: 1\,200 words or less \nPlease submit no more than three flash fiction pieces per submission. These pieces will be evaluated by the Redivider Fiction Team and published in a dedicated section apart from other full-length short fiction. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. \nRedivider prefers flash fiction that tells a whole story or describes a scene or situation. Works that function more as meditations on a subject\, or which contain little movement or direction may best be considered prose poetry\, and should be submitted under Poetry. \nPlease see the Fiction guidelines for more guidance on content. \nPOETRY\nLength guidelines: 5 poems max\, preferably 10–60 lines per poem \nPlease submit no more than five poems per submission\, up to ten pages\, as a single document. We prefer poems around 10–60 lines in length\, to best accommodate our online format. We can publish poetry featuring complex enjambment and indentation\, but please be reasonable with longer poems\, as each work must be carefully typeset\, line-by-line\, to show up as the artist intended on a web page. \nWe are looking for new and under-published voices. Submit what you’re worried to send elsewhere. We want poems that circumvent the familiar\, that break through abstraction to examine a moment or concept from the side\, rather than straight on. We want poems that shift understanding\, that reveal core\, unexpected truths. \n MEMOIR & PERSONAL ESSAY\nWord count: 6\,000 words or less \nPlease submit a single piece of nonfiction personal essay or memoir to this category. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. Journalistic works\, criticism and commentary\, and texts containing substantial background research should be submitted under Nonfiction. \nCULTURAL COMMENTARY & CRITIQUE\nWord count: 8\,000 words or less \nPlease submit a single piece of cultural commentary/critique. We accept both casual and academic-style manuscripts for this genre. These may be essays regarding US or non-US culture. Essays in translation are also welcome. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface.
