SUMMARY:P - Last Leaves Magazine Call for Submissions. Theme: "Feast"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\n\n\nSubmissions are OPEN until July 31st at 11:59p.m. EST. \nTheme for Issue 7: FEAST \nCome one\, come all\, please join us under the falling leaves for a feast like none other. This October\, the seventh issue of Last Leaves will make your mouth water. In preparation\, please send us your favorite foods in the form of artwork and poetry. We’re looking for harvest poems\, recipe poems\, last meal poems. But we don’t just want some food. We want a feast\, the kind that makes you sick. We want the Steward of Gondor eating tomatoes\, if you know what I mean. We want gluttony\, we want to feel gorged\, we want to forget that we’ve ever felt hungry. Send us your best\, the feast is coming. \nPlease submit your poetry via email to lastleavesmag@gmail.com. Failure to adhere to the guidelines may invalidate your submission. If you have any questions or concerns surrounding the guidelines\, please send us an email prior to submitting. We’re always happy to help! As always\, our themes are very loose and open for interpretation. We provide guidelines\, but by all means take it and run with it! \nSubmission guidelines: \n\n\nFor poetry: Please put “Poetry Submission” in the subject line. Send up to 5 poems (no more than 10 pages) as a single Word (.doc or .docx) attachment. Please start each poem on a new page. All work should be single-spaced and in Times New Roman\, 12-point font. \n\n\nDo not include your name or contact information in the documents. \n\n\nPlease include a brief 50-word bio in the body of your email. Include your name as you would like it to appear in the magazine\, your email\, and links to your website and/or social media (if desired). We will trim the bio as-needed if it exceeds the word count. \n\n\nIf you’ve submitted to us in the past\, we kindly ask that you start a new email thread for each submission window (i.e.\, instead of replying to your previous submission\, start a new email with the subject line for the category you’re submitting to). \n\n\n

SUMMARY:PFN - NonBinary Review #33 Seeking Submissions. Theme: "World Tour"
DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is open for submissions on the theme of “world tour.” From the first migration of our ancestors out of Africa to the globe trotting of the jet set\, our planet and our culture have been shaped by people traveling vast distances. Some traveled for survival\, some for wealth\, some for power\, and some traveled to satisfy their curiosity. We’re looking for stories about epic journeys over vast distances with many destinations. We’re looking for travels that have changed the way people have viewed their world. We’re looking for travels that have broadened the outlook\, not just of the traveler\, but of civilization. \nWe’re not looking for personal travelogues\, unless you’re Columbus\, Magellan\, etc.\, in which case\, we have some questions. We’re also not looking for stories of family’s moves to the new world. We also don’t want interplanetary travel-type science fiction. \nWe have different teams evaluating poetry and prose. If you submit to the wrong genre\, your submission will be declined.  All submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme and be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman\, or they will be rejected. \nPoetry: NonBinary Review pays a $10 flat fee for poetry and you may include up to THREE poems may be included per submission\, but each must be a separate file.\nProse: NonBinary Review pays 1¢ per word for prose with a limit of 3000 words.

SUMMARY:P - Free the Verse Poetry Magazine Seeking Submissions. Theme: "Do You Smell Burning?"
DESCRIPTION:We are now accepting submissions for our autumn issue. While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Do You Smell Burning?’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. We love free verse poems that take familiar situations and turn them on their head\, using unusual metaphors and drawing parallels no one else would see. Poems with a sense of place and story are always welcome\, as are experimental pieces. You can read our latest issue\, I Don’t Want To Talk About It\, to get a sense of the poetry we publish. \nThe deadline for this issue is August 29th\, 2023. Please read our general submission guidelines below before sending us your work: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease submit up to 3 poems per issue\, in one submission. \n\n\n‘Pulling Teeth’ is the title of the issue\, and therefore should not be the title of your poem. \n\n\nYour work must be original and unpublished\, either in print on online. We will accept work that has appeared on your personal website or equivalent. \n\n\nPlease include a brief third-person bio with your submission\, up to a maximum of 50 words. You are welcome to include details of previous publications\, but this will have no impact on whether your poems will be selected for our magazine. \n\n\nAt this time\, we only accept poems written in English. You are welcome to include words and phrases from other languages. \n\n\nIt is free to submit your work. At present we do not offer compensation to our authors. If your work is accepted for publication\, it will be published in our digital magazine. \n\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions. If one of your poems is accepted for publication elsewhere\, please let us know immediately via our contact page. \n\n\nYou must be over 18 years old to submit.

SUMMARY:PN - Call for Submissions to Friends Journal Theme: "Ecumenical & Interfaith Friends"
DESCRIPTION:We prefer articles written in a fresh\, non-academic style. Friends value an experiential approach to life and religious thought. Our readers particularly value articles on: exploring Friends’ testimonies and beliefs; integrating faith\, work\, and home lives; historical and contemporary Friends; social concerns and actions; and the variety of beliefs across the branches of Friends. \nFriends Journal prefers articles with a constructive approach to spiritual seeking. We seek an open\, curious and respectful tone even when discussing controversial subjects. We prefer articles rooted in the author’s own experiences of the divine. Submissions should show an awareness of Friends’ ways and concerns\, as well as sensitivity to them. \nOctober Issue\, due July 17th\nThere was once a time during which Quakers mostly kept to themselves. But modern Friends are very involved in the world and spend a lot of time working with people of all faiths. \nOur October issue will look at Ecumenical and Interfaith Friends. Some questions that might be addressed: \n\nWhat do Friends raised in other traditions bring to us?\nWhat about Friends whose spirituality also embraces other faiths?\nHow do we make common ground with other Christians?\nWhat is the balance between keeping to our own traditions and opening up to others?\nIs there a danger of being too ecumenical? Is it possible to lose our own beliefs?\n\nFast Facts \n\nFeatures run 1200-2500 words.\nSubmissions close July 17\, 2023.\nQuestions? Email editors@friendsjournal.org

SUMMARY:PFN - Redivider Journal Seeking Submissions with the Theme: "Blurred Genre"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nBLURRED GENRE: SUMMER ’23 SPECIAL EDITION\nRedivider’s Summer ’23 Blurred Genre special edition explores the fluid boundaries between genres. We welcome all hybrid\, genre-blurring and experimental work. Submit your flash nonfiction\, visual sci-fi poetry\, memoir comics\, mixed-media fiction collage with a dash of cultural critique\, digital or drawn media—all fall in the broad spectrum of possibilities! All contributors will be paid $30 for accepted work. \nPlease send us one piece per submission of 3\,000 words or less (ten pages or less of graphic media). All submissions must be the author’s original\, unpublished work. \nIn your cover letter\, please specify in a sentence how your submitted piece blurs the line between textual genre. \nSubmissions will be open until July 15. The issue will be released in late summer. \nFICTION\nWord count: 1\,200–6\,000 words \nPlease submit one short fiction piece at a time. Stories shorter than 1\,200 words should be submitted under Flash Fiction. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. Redivider will happily consider genre fiction with strong enough prose\, though hard science fiction\, high fantasy\, etc. will probably fit better at another journal. \nThings we already see a lot of:\n• Excessive body writing (hands\, eyes\, eyebrows\, throats\, mouths\, breaths\, chills in the spine\, etc.)\n• Stories about terminal illness\n• Privileged family fiction\n• Descriptions of the sun and its rays and the color of the sky on the opening page \nThings we wish we saw more:\n• Satisfying endings\n• Characters with complex motives\n• Dark humor\n• Consistent voice throughout the piece\n• Elements of sci-fi and mysticism\n• Psychological thrillers\n• Real science and real history utilized for theme and setting\, (i.e. background research)\n• Cli-fi \nFLASH FICTION\nWord count: 1\,200 words or less \nPlease submit no more than three flash fiction pieces per submission. These pieces will be evaluated by the Redivider Fiction Team and published in a dedicated section apart from other full-length short fiction. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. \nRedivider prefers flash fiction that tells a whole story or describes a scene or situation. Works that function more as meditations on a subject\, or which contain little movement or direction may best be considered prose poetry\, and should be submitted under Poetry. \nPlease see the Fiction guidelines for more guidance on content. \nPOETRY\nLength guidelines: 5 poems max\, preferably 10–60 lines per poem \nPlease submit no more than five poems per submission\, up to ten pages\, as a single document. We prefer poems around 10–60 lines in length\, to best accommodate our online format. We can publish poetry featuring complex enjambment and indentation\, but please be reasonable with longer poems\, as each work must be carefully typeset\, line-by-line\, to show up as the artist intended on a web page. \nWe are looking for new and under-published voices. Submit what you’re worried to send elsewhere. We want poems that circumvent the familiar\, that break through abstraction to examine a moment or concept from the side\, rather than straight on. We want poems that shift understanding\, that reveal core\, unexpected truths. \n MEMOIR & PERSONAL ESSAY\nWord count: 6\,000 words or less \nPlease submit a single piece of nonfiction personal essay or memoir to this category. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface. Journalistic works\, criticism and commentary\, and texts containing substantial background research should be submitted under Nonfiction. \nCULTURAL COMMENTARY & CRITIQUE\nWord count: 8\,000 words or less \nPlease submit a single piece of cultural commentary/critique. We accept both casual and academic-style manuscripts for this genre. These may be essays regarding US or non-US culture. Essays in translation are also welcome. Texts should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or a similar serif typeface.

SUMMARY:N - Call for Submissions to HerStry. Theme: "Grief"
DESCRIPTION:HerStry centers the experiences of women identifying persons. We’re looking for work from bigender/polygender persons\, cisgender women\, intergender persons/intersex persons\, nonbinary persons/gender non-conforming persons\, transgender women/transfeminine persons\, two spirit. In other words\, if you are a cis man\, please refrain from submitting. \nWe’re steeped in grief. Especially now\, in this (post?) COVID world\, when so many of us have lost so much. But this isn’t a theme about COVID grief (though you can certainly write about that)\, this is a theme about the grief that is with us now\, the grief that was with us long ago\, and the grief that grows with us. Don’t be afraid to bring us broken\, heavy stories. We can handle it.\n** HerStry is always happy to share stories anonymously—if your story is selected for publication\, simply let your editor know you would not like your name shared **\nThe Rules: \n\nAll stories must be true and about you.\nStories must follow the theme in some way\, interpretations can be wide.\nStories must stay between 500–3\,000 words.\nDocuments should be double spaced\, 12Pt font with 1 inch margins.\nSubmissions must be in .doc or .docx form—we do not accept PDFs.\nPlease do not put your name on your manuscript. We realize in personal essays\, the author’s name often comes up\, so just use your best discretion.\nPlease include a third person bio. Cover letters are fine\, but not necessary (we don’t read them\, we’re more interested in what you’ve written).\nPlease submit only once per theme.\nWe do not accept previously published stories.\n\n$3 submission fee goes toward keeping HerStry sustainable. All accepted pieces receive $20 payment.

SUMMARY:PFN - All My Relations Magazine Seeking Submissions on "Overcoming"
DESCRIPTION:All My Relations Volume 5 is an art and lit\, online and printed magazine\, exploring the theme of overcoming. This volume is open to BIPOC\, gender variant\, and disabled creatives only\, in consideration of the theme. Own voices only\, please.\nWe are looking for honest pieces reflecting on times you overcame an obstacle either internal or external\, how your ancestors may have overcome obstacles\, or musings on alternate universes where people are given the space and abundance to come as they are without having to overcome. We are looking for pieces that honor your experience\, honor your journey\, imagine the absence of otherization\, and/or aid in communal healing. \nRequirements for Submissions\nWe require written submissions to be under 5\,000 words for fiction and nonfiction and under 5 pages for poetry\, submitted in a Word Document or text file. PDFs will not be considered and will be rejected outright. Submissions must be in English as\, unfortunately\, that is the only language we can read. Do feel free to add words in a language other than English and we will consult Google or other resources\, but the submission must be primarily in English. \n\n\nWe will accept simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if it is a simultaneous submission (in the “Anything you want our editors to know about your piece” section of the form) and let us know as soon as you do if it has been accepted elsewhere. \nOur form requires the following information: your name as you’d like it to appear\, the name of the piece as you’d like it to appear\, trigger warnings if necessary\, and answers to our identity questions. \nWe aim to have a diverse publication from a diverse set of voices. In order to make sure we do that\, we need to know who you are. We will not deny someone based on identity unless it is deemed that the submission becomes inappropriate or appropriation due to the submitter’s identity. Things that we would consider inappropriate or appropriation would include writing about what it’s like to be part of a historically marginalized community you do not belong to. We encourage people outside of the community to include people from historically marginalized communities\, but we won’t publish pieces that explain what it’s like to be part of those communities. We value inclusivity and believe the only way to do it right is with #OwnVoices.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Muleskinner Journal. Theme: "Refuge"
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nSubmissions for Journal Seven are open\nOur Theme is REFUGE…\n\nRefuge.\nShelter from the Storm. \nRefuge is where you take stock\, assess the damage\, treat your blisters\, or finally get some sleep. It’s also where you might be a refugee\, dependent on the kindness of strangers\, stripped of everything\, caught in the middle (but you don’t have to live like a refugee!). \nMuleskinner Journal has been on the road for a year and a half\, and we are weather-worn but wiser\, certainly more aware of the rugged and gentle beauty around us\, and happy and grateful to have all of you on the long journey with us. \nSend us your poems and stories about refuge:  where it was\, where you expect to find it\, what it’s like to get there\, to live there\, how it turns if you stay too long\, and what it’s like to leave.  Your truth is safe here\, and your safety is true here.  Your hope is alive and well. \nAnd\, as always\, interpret as you wish.\nThis place of refuge is open now\, through July 1. \nWhat we are looking for…\nMuleskinner Journal accepts previously unpublished work only. Please use the following word counts to select a category to submit. Send no more than one piece at a time\, except where noted. Please submit in only one category at a time. \n\n\nMicro-Fiction: 25-50 words (1-3 pieces at a time) \n\n\nFlash: max. 1000 words each (1-3 pieces at a time) \n\n\nShort Story/excerpts from longer work: max. 5000 words \n\n\nCreative Nonfiction: (max. 5000 words) \n\n\nPoetry: Any length or form. SUMMARY:PFN - THEMA Seeking Submissions about "The Magic of Light and Shadow"
DESCRIPTION:Submissions \nNOTE: Previously published pieces are welcome\, provided that the submission fits the theme and that the author owns the copyright. \nThe premise (target theme) must be an integral part of the plot\, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental. NOTE: Stories longer than 20 double-spaced typewritten pages will not be considered. Indicate premise (target theme) on title page. Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. Include self-addressed\, stamped envelope (SASE) with each submission. Rejected manuscripts unaccompanied by an SASE will not be returned. Response time: 3 months after premise deadline.  NO READER’S FEE. \nMail to: THEMA\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747. \nOutside the US: email thema@cox.net \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem $10. \nCopyright reverts to author after publication. \nTHEMA isn’t for everyone. To find out why\, click here. \nNew to submitting manuscripts to journals?\nClick here to download a PDF file of a few basic guidelines. \nUnlike many publishers\, we prefer works submitted by the authors themselves\, without the involvement of an agent. \nBe sure to indicate premise and include SASE for each submission.  BE SURE to include a separate SASE for each premise. \nNo handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNOTE: \nWe do not accept e-mailed submissions EXCEPT from authors who live outside the U.S. \nFor those living outside the U.S.\, submit manuscript as an email attachment (readable by MSWord ― either as a DOC file or an RTF file)\, and include the following information on the title page: target theme\, title of work\, name of author\, email address and physical address. \n\nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. Subtlety is more creative.

SUMMARY:PFN - Bellevue Literary Review Prizes for Writing on Illness\, Health and Healing
DESCRIPTION:The BLR Prizes award outstanding writing related to themes of health\, healing\, illness\, the mind\, and the body. Winners are published in the spring issue of BLR. For each genre\, first prize is $1000 and honorable mention is $300. \nFiction: We seek character-driven fiction with original voices and strong settings. We do not publish genre fiction (romance\, sci-fi\, horror). We have only occasionally published flash fiction. While we are always interested in creative explorations in style\, we do lean toward classic short stories.\nNonfiction: We are looking for essays that reach beyond the standard ‘illness narrative’ to develop a topic in an engaging and original manner. Incorporate engaging and creative analysis that allows anecdotes to serve a larger purpose. (Please\, no academic discourses or works with footnotes. )\nPoetry: We encourage poems that are accessible to a wide audience. Characteristics we look for are vivid writing\, strong narrative\, and rendering the familiar new. We encourage you to peruse back issues in our archive to get a sense of our ethos.\n\n\nGUIDELINES\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmissions for BLR Prizes are open until July 1\, 2023.\n\n\nWe happily consider simultaneous submissions\, but please inform us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.\n\n\nManuscripts can only be accepted electronically via Submittable.\n\n\nFiction/nonfiction word max is 5\,000 words (though most of our published prose is in the range of 2\,000-4\,000 words.) Please submit no more than three poems. Each poem should be on a separate page within a single document.\n\n\nDo not put your name or other identifying information on the manuscript document (or in the filename) so that the submissions can be read blindly. No cover letter needed.\n\n\nStudents/friends/colleagues/relations of a judge are not permitted to enter submissions to that judge’s genre.\n\n\nThere is a $20 fee per contest submission. Contest submission qualifies you for a 50% discount on a BLR subscription. (The fee helps BLR fund the contest and the journal\, but if it’s a hardship for you\, please contact us.)\n\n\nWinners from each genre (poetry\, fiction\, nonfiction) receive $1000. Honorable mentions from each genre receive $300.\n\n\nWinners will be published in BLR Issue 46 in Spring 2024.\n\n\nAll contest submissions are automatically considered for general publication as well.\n\n\nAll submissions must be of previously unpublished work.*  BLR acquires First North American rights\, and the right to reprint in anthologies and online. After publication\, all other rights revert to the author and the work may be reprinted as long as appropriate acknowledgement to BLR is made.

SUMMARY:N - Rolling Deadlines - Roxanne Gay Books Seeking Emerging Writers to Feature in THE AUDACITY Newsletter
DESCRIPTION:THE AUDACITY\, my newsletter\, features an emerging writer twice a month. I define emerging writer as someone with fewer than three article/essay/short story publications and no published books or book contracts. \nPlease submit your best nonfiction and nonfiction only. I am interested in literary essays and memoir. Please submit only one essay at a time. Essays should be between 1500 and 3000 words. We may take up to eight weeks to respond but we will respond to all submissions. \nAll essays are paid a flat fee of $2\,000. \nSubmissions will only be accepted at https://gay.submittable.com/. \nI am interested in thoughtful essays\, beautiful\, intelligent writing\, deep explorations\, timelessness\, and challenging conventional thinking without being cheap and lazy. I am interested in provocative work but we are not interested in senseless provocation. You don’t have to cannibalize yourself to tell a compelling story. The essays in Unruly Bodies or that I have preciously published in The Audacity might give you a sense of what I like but I am always open to being surprised. I am not looking to publish anew what I’ve already published. \nAgain\, I am only interested in nonfiction\, which is to say no poetry\, fiction\, or anything else that is not nonfiction. I cannot stress this enough. I am only interested in nonfiction for the Emerging Writer Series. \nThere are few guidelines for the kind of essays I am looking for.  I want nuanced\, thoughtful work where the essayist looks both inward and outward. I am particularly interested in well-researched\, voice-driven writing. Personal essays and cultural criticism are warmly welcomed. \nSubmissions should be between 1500 and 3000 words. Writers are paid a flat rate of $2\,000. \nSubmissions are only open to emerging writers. You can only have three publications or fewer and no books or book contracts. \nPLEASE SUBMIT ONLY ONE ESSAY AT A TIME.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Black Fox Literary Magazine Contest: "Secrets Unraveled
DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for its ninth writing contest. The theme for this round is “Secrets Unraveled.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWe all have secrets. There are secrets we keep to ourselves\, secrets we share with select people\, and secrets we bury deep inside. But what happens when those secrets start weighing us down? When they become a burden we can no longer carry? \nWe want to know what secrets your characters or narrators have kept hidden. Maybe it’s a secret that has been hidden for years—a past mistake\, a forbidden love\, or a hidden talent. Or perhaps the secret is something recently discovered—a family secret\, a long-held belief\, or a buried memory. We’re looking for stories that explore the power of secrets—how they shape us\, define us\, and ultimately\, how they can set us free. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $300 and publication in the Summer 2023 issue. All submissions are considered for publication in the Summer 2023 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on June 18\, 2023. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Please see our Submission Guidelines before submitting. Submissions are accepted through our submission manager found here. \nWe will select a winner by the end of July and each entrant will receive a response. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \nWe will select a winner by the end of July\, and each entrant will receive a response. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to the winner is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!
