SUMMARY:F - F(r)iction's Short Story Contest
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: Nov 1\, 2022\nResults: Announced March 18\, 2023\nPrize: $1000 \nLimit: 7\,500 words \nFor full Submission Guidelines\, please read the information on our Submittable page carefully.  And please visit our formatting guidelines page to properly format your work for submission. We won’t reject a submission flat out for not following guidelines\, but we will frown the whole time we’re reading. \nAn insider tip for you all: We seek work that actively pushes boundaries\, that forces us to question traditions and tastes. If your work takes risks\, we want to read it. We like strong narratives that make us feel something and stories we haven’t seen before. To get an idea of the kind of work we look for\, please check out this page from our editors detailing what we look for in our submissions. \nWe also strongly recommend checking out a past issue of F(r)iction before submitting to our contests to get an idea of our general publishing aesthetic. We have several pieces available online\, but there’s nothing like holding a glossy\, full-color issue in your hands. You can check out all of our issues in our shop. \nWe accept work\, written in English\, from anywhere in the world—regardless of genre\, style\, or origin—and welcome speculative writing and experimental literature. Strange is good. Strange with a strong character arc is even better. Keep it weird\, folks.

SUMMARY:PFN - NonBinary Review Call for Submissions. Theme: "Family"
DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is open for submissions on the theme of “family.” Just as each of us carries many identities within us\, each of us belongs to many families. There’s our family of origin\, often complicated and tumultuous\, that leaves an indelible impression on our physical selves (as powerfully expressed in the poetry of Philip Larkin). Some of us have foster or adoptive families that further complicated our childhood sense of ourselves in the world. There’s our family of choice\, those people we gather to us to be our support system as we grow and change. There are families of affinity: people with whom we share common interests or experiences. But those aren’t the sum total of possibility. \nWho are your family? How do you relate to them? How has family shaped your life and your responses to the world? What is the gulf between the family you need and the family you have? We want to know about your relationships and how they shaped you\, rather than hearing the story of your (no doubt wonderful) grandpa\, Auntie Bertha\, or Little Timmy. We want to hear about your accidental families\, your surprise families\, your fucked up families\, and the ways you have carved out a place in your life and heart for them\, or managed to build a much-needed barrier between you and them. \nAll submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme\, and be submitted (double-spaced for prose) in 12pt Times New Roman or they will be rejected. Submitters of poetry may include up to five poems per submission\, but each must be a separate file.  NonBinary Review  pays 1¢ per word for prose with a limit of 3000 words and a $10 flat fee for poetry.. \nTo submit Poetry\, use this link.  \nTo submit Prose\, use this link.

SUMMARY:PFN - Prairie Fire Magazine Seeks Submissions on "The Peace We Make"
DESCRIPTION:With so much war and violence raging all over the world\, many feel utterly helpless. Pema Chödrön\, a Buddhist nun\, says that the origins of aggression and war reside in our hearts and that the way we respond to the challenges that face us can either build on that culture of violence\, or create a culture of kindness and compassion. \nPrairie Fire is seeking fiction\, poetry and creative non-fiction that looks at the depth of peace\, and the struggles that we’ve all had when it comes to creating peace instead of war. Creating peace within ourselves and with others is a journey\, what does your journey look like? When have you chosen peace as an act of rebellion\, found a moment of personal peace in a war zone (literally or figuratively)\, found inner peace despite the chaos\, made peace with a loved one\, made peace with an idea\, made peace with all the little battles that rage inside us every day of our lives. And\, perhaps peace\, no matter how hard you tried hasn’t come yet\, and you’re still waiting.

SUMMARY:PFN - Prachya Review Seeks Submissions With the Theme: "Eye of the Tiger"
DESCRIPTION:SUBMISSION GUIDELINES\n\nLet everything happen to you: beauty and terror.\nJust keep going. No feeling is final. \n~ Rainer Maria Rilke\, “Go to the Limits of Your Longing” \nAfter a little bit of break\, Prachya Review is coming back\, and we are now open to receiving your submissions of short stories and poems. Our chosen theme for the comeback: Eye of the Tiger.\nLife often offers us both: beauty and terror. Sometimes we let ourselves be open to it all\, and sometimes we are caught off guard. But we recover\, take a step back and fight back. Not just to survive\, but to live\, to feel alive. Prachya Review\, too\, took a step back\, took time away to restore and refocus. And now we return. We come back with a new website\, a new logo\, and a greater passion to serve the literary world through our magazine. In retrospect\, while we felt the brunt of burnout\, we realise that the world also suffered.\nGlobally we have faced a pandemic that took loved ones before their time and altered the course of our lives. Some of us have lost our jobs\, or had opportunities slip out of our hands. Some of us have suffered mentally from anxiety and depression. The journey has been painful and hard. But we have also risen above the rubbles of mayhem. Often stronger\, often more courageous.\nAnd this is where we come back to our theme. Where is the Eye of the Tiger in you? What does the phrase remind you of? Rocky\, or Katy Perry? Or do you have your own unique relationship to it?\nSubmit your stories and essays\, poems and artworks\, and tell us how you have survived in the midst of tragedy and boundless chaos. Tell us how you have changed in the past year\, and how the world has changed you. After all\, like Rilke says: no feeling is final.

SUMMARY:PFN - About Place Journal Call for Submissions. Theme: "Center of Gravity"
DESCRIPTION:Center of Gravity\nJustice is the center of gravity and resistance is how we get there. \nWhile the fight for social justice\, reproductive rights\, and the environment has been an ongoing struggle\, the present moment demands an even more urgent response to these grievous times. As James Baldwin reminds us\, “the role of the artist…is to illuminate that darkness [and] to make the world a more human dwelling place.” In this light\, we invite submissions of poetry and prose that explore the possibilities of resistance and collective democratic worldbuilding\, envisioning worlds in which achieving justice is a reality. \nWe are particularly interested in submissions that engage with the various centers of gravity concerning voting\, reproductive rights\, and trans rights\, making black lives matter\, healthcare\, inequality\, and their intersections with the environment and autonomy. In particular\, we ask how acts of resistance might rebuild our human and nonhuman dwelling places while creating resilient systems of authentic community. \nSubmission Guidelines\nAbout Place Journal is published twice a year\, in spring and fall. A new Call for Submissions is posted twice a year. Please review the current call and follow any specific genres called for in the upcoming is \nWork can include: \n\nPoetry/Lyric: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 50 lines each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, txt & rtf. (If your poetry submission contains special formatting\, we suggest submitting a PDF in addition to your Word doc).\nFiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction and other prose: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 4000 words each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, txt & rtf.\nIf your submission includes items from several genre categories\, the total number of submitted pieces cannot exceed 5.\n\nEach submission must be accompanied by a bio in doc\, docx\, txt or rtf format. Bios should be in the third person and not exceed 150 words. Please include your website and twitter handle\, if desired. \nBy submitting\, you guarantee you hold the rights to the work\, and you grant About Place Journal the rights to publish the submitted work with first serial rights (FNASR). After publication\, rights revert to the author. Original\, previously unpublished work only. All pieces must be submitted through Submittable.

SUMMARY:PFN - Moss Piglet Zine Seeks Submissions on the Theme of "The Universe (and what lies beyond)"
DESCRIPTION:The Krazines  welcome submissions of prose and poetry for publication in its full-color\, monthly zine\, Moss Piglet.  Anyone of any age or talent level may contribute work (but please\, no politics.)  Each issue has a theme in place to jumpstart your imagination.  You may interpret these themes widely.\n\n\n\nOur theme is The Universe and Beyond  Let your imagination be your guide in interpreting this theme. You can use it literally to develop work in words which reflect current or historic studies of the cosmos. You can otherwise become the next Jules Verne\, Robert Heinlein\, or other sci-fi authors. You can deliver your own images and theories about the multi-verse. You can ponder our own Pale Blue Dot of Planet Earth. \nDEADLINE: Wednesday\, October 5\, 2022. Send to info@krazines.com. \nIf you are a contributor and would like to receive a printed copy of this next  issue\, cost is $10.00 plus postage. \nWe also have subscriptions available to all readers in the USA.  For those living outside of the United States\, we can customize a subscription package for you by contacting us at info@krazines.com.\n\nFor our submission guidelines\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n\nSubmissions of Stories\, Essays & Poems\n\nPlease send text submissions in .doc\, .docx or PDF formats to info@krazines.com.  We are more apt to accept short works\, as our publication is digest-size\, but we don’t have a word limit.  Check out some of our past issues to get an idea on the style and length of written work that we have published. \nYou may provide multiple submissions\, but don’t go crazy. Someone has to read all of the stuff that comes across our desk. We’re OK with simultaneous submissions and previously published work. Just cite the place where your writing previously appeared. If you have a fancy title like Poet Laureate\, Writer-In-Residence\, or you have been knighted by the Queen\, we’d be happy to include that information in our publication right next to your name.

SUMMARY:PFN - Reckoning: creative writing on environmental justice Seeks Submissions on the Theme: "Oceans"
DESCRIPTION:Submit\n\n\nWe’re currently reading for Reckoning 7; the theme is oceans\, and the deadline is September 22\, 2022. Read the submission calls from editors Tim Fab-Eme (poetry)\, Priya Chand (nonfiction) and Octavia Cade (fiction). \nTo see what we’re looking for\, try Reckoning 6\, 5\, 4\, 3\, 2\, 1\, the interviews\, twitter\, or even LCRW 33. \nThe short version: creative writing about environmental justice. The fiction we publish is mostly\, but not exclusively\, speculative; the nonfiction is more creative than journalistic\, the poetry tends towards the narrative\, preferably with some thematic heft. The heart of what we want is your personal\, visceral\, idiosyncratic understanding of the world and the people in it as it has been\, as it is\, as it will be\, as it could be\, as a consequence of humanity’s relationship with the earth. \nWe are always seeking work from Indigenous writers and artists\, writers and artists of color\, queer and trans writers and artists\, and anyone who has suffered the consequences\, intended or otherwise\, of dominant society’s systemic disconnect with and mistreatment of the natural world. And we’re seeking new ways to reach all of the above. Seriously\, if you know of a way we can do that\, please share. \nWe’d love to publish more work in translation! We’re currently open to considering writing in Spanish\, French or Swedish for potential translation. For work already translated into English\, we pay the same rate to both author and translator. \nWe don’t publish ecofascism or work we perceive to be prejudiced in any form\, including sexism\, racism\, ableism\, ageism. We reserve the right to point it out—respectfully—when we see it\, though we’re as prone to mistakes and misunderstanding as anyone else. Here’s a start on a list of what else doesn’t work for us. \nWe’re no longer accepting submissions by email; queries are ok\, though not necessary. Simultaneous submissions are ok. Multiple submissions are discouraged\, except for poetry\, where we prefer 3-5 poems or 10 pages\, whichever is shorter\, combined in a single document. Feel free to submit again after you hear back. Query for reprints. Length: 0 – 20\,000 words (query for longer). Response time has ranged from one to four months and is slowest October – January as we’re putting together the new issue. \nThere are no fees to submit. Payment is 8 cents per word (US) for prose\, $30 per page for poetry\, art negotiable\, minimum $25 per piece. Sample contract is here. \nSubmit your work via Moksha! \nAll of the above shall be subject hopefully not to too much change but certainly to clarification\, evolution and adaptation.

SUMMARY:PFN - Capsule Stories Winter 2022 Edition: Hibernation
DESCRIPTION:Our Winter 2022 Edition theme is Hibernation. We’re looking for stories\, poems\, and essays about hunkering down for the winter and quietly resting. Write about animals hibernating\, or write about you hibernating. Send us pieces full of longing and patience as you hide out\, slow down\, and wait for the end of winter. Write about snow days or sick days and taking a break instead of being productive. Write about fallow periods for the land—and your writing. We are especially interested in quiet\, lingering pieces that take place in winter and evoke the feeling of the season. \nCapsule Stories Submission Guidelines\nWe accept short stories\, poems\, and remarkably written essays. For short stories and essays\, we’re interested in pieces under 3\,000 words. You may include up to five poems in a single poetry submission (please send them all in one Word document)\, and only send one story or essay at a time. Please send previously unpublished work only (“published” includes pieces that have been posted or made publicly available on a blog\, website\, or social media platform). You may only submit one submission per edition. Simultaneous submissions are okay\, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. Please include a brief third-person bio with your submission\, and attach your submissions in a Word document (no PDFs unless your poetry has very specific formatting\, please!). \nAll writers are welcome to submit\, especially writers of color\, LGBTQ writers\, writers with disabilities\, and all writers from marginalized backgrounds. \nContributors who have been previously published in Capsule Stories are welcome to submit. There is no waiting period or restriction on submitting after we’ve published your work. \nCapsule Stories does not tolerate plagiarism. SUMMARY:PFN - Musing Publications Magazine Seeks Submissions on The Nuances of New-Age Feminism
DESCRIPTION:At Musing Publications we aim to uplift voices of writers and artists from all backgrounds. Our main goal is to publish works from underrepresented communities – writers/artists that are women\, people of color\, disabled and LGBTQ+ identifying. \n\n\n\n\nMagazine Submissions\n\nThe theme of our first zine is The Nuances of New-Age Feminism.. With modern day feminism being so multi-faceted\, we’ve seen many new waves of feminism taking off in corners of the internet. From dissociative feminism to girl-boss feminism\, new subsets of the movement have been rising rapidly on social media. It’s left many of us wondering\, where does the feminist movement go from here? Is one form of feminism supposed to bring us more liberation than another?  Musing Publications wants to hear how you’re dissecting your own place in the movement in the age of social media. \nWe want your poetry\, short stories\, visual art\, photography\, essays – any medium you choose to express yourself in is welcome!  For poetry submissions\, please submit up to three poems. For art or photography\, please submit up to five pieces. Short stories should be 2000 words or less and essays should be 1000 words or less. Fees for all submissions to the magazine are $3. \nOur magazine is released quarterly\, with the inaugural edition set to release in fall of 2022. We are accepting submissions for this quarter’s magazine until September 15th\, 2022. All contributors accepted to this edition will receive 2 copies of the zine once it has been printed. SUMMARY:PFN - Passager Journal Seeks Submissions on the Theme of "Ancestral or Generational Trauma"
DESCRIPTION:Writers must be age 50 or older at the time of publication to submit.\nPublication: January/February\, Guest Editor: Christine Lincoln\nAccepted genres: poetry\, memoir\, short fiction\nUp to 5 poems\, 40-line max ea. OR 4\,000 words of prose\nNo reading fee\nAbout the theme: Ancestral or Generational Trauma \nWe hear the words ancestral trauma and we might immediately think of childhood sexual or physical abuse\, or the dissolution of our parents’ marriage\, or the discovery some awful family secret. Secrets and generational trauma often go hand in hand. \nBut there are other less obvious ways we can and\, most likely\, have experienced ancestral trauma. Generational trauma can be something as seemingly insignificant as being raised to fear people who live in the inner city\, or something as quietly insidious as growing up poor\, or it could be something as prevalent as bearing witness in a family that did not treat its women with the highest regard. \nThe truth is only you\, the writer\, the artist\, can decide the kinds of trauma that have been passed down as easily as mother’s milk\, the limiting beliefs and damaging ideas handed down as succinctly as family myths and bedtime stories—the legacy of pain that has been perpetuated by our ancestors\, because they could not do any better\, but also the generational trauma we have inadvertently continued\, because of our inability—until now—to look straight into the shadows where these things hide\, to heal\, and transcend\, create a new legacy. \nWriters must be age 50 or older at the time of publication to submit. \nYou can send paper submissions by postal mail or submit online via Submittable.
