SUMMARY:PFN - About Place Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Careful/Care-full Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Careful/Care-full Collaboration\nCreative collaboration is an opportunity to summon and practice ways of being in the world and with each other that challenge myths of exceptional individualism as constructed within colonial and capitalist contexts. This type of collaboration can acknowledge and affirm that making art is not an isolated event\, and has the potential to share and/or redefine power between artists and the communities in/with which they work. The dynamic and responsive work that emerges from entangling minds\, perspectives\, and positionalities speaks and models on the page or screen\, through the body or soundwaves\, the care and imagination that is integral to community building and kin-making.  Creative collaboration is a method and commitment to seeding and nurturing webs of knowledge\, histories\, practices\, and relationships with each other and the places that are sacred to us. \nGuided by this understanding\, the Spring 2025 issue of About Place Journal invites submissions that contemplate what it means to collaborate with others through practices and processes that are careful and care-full\, that is collaborations that are cautious at various stages and shaped by an ethics of care between the artists\, for their communities\, and throughout the process of co-creating. \nKeeping in mind the core values  of the Black Earth Institute to use Art to “promote an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings and this earth we share” and to “work toward a society based on Justice\, Spirit\, and Earth Centeredness…” this issue invites joint submissions from artistic collaborators that make transparent the practices\, processes\, and creations that connect them to each other\, honor the earth\, engage with spirit\, and promote/fight for justice in ways that require careful and care-full attention to individual and communal needs and desires. \nWe are interested in submissions that define community and care\, and that consider how/why collaboration necessitates careful or care-full approaches to creating\, re-vision relationships with art\, artists\, community\, nature\, and/or the divine. \nQuestions to explore include\, but are not limited to: How does collaboration lead to care and what connects the two? How does conflict within collaboration lead to new ways to care about each other? What practices shape your work as an individual? As a collaborative unit? As a community? How are care-focused interspecies or inter-technological collaborations imagined or practiced? How does engaging with spirit or the spirits shape your creative practice? How\, when\, and why do we share our work with each other? \nWe welcome your poetry\, prose\, and hybrid forms of collaborative expression. Interviews\, recorded dialogue\, or other forms that document creative collaboration are also welcomed. Submissions from collaborative partners or groups will be prioritized over those of individuals. \nAbout Place Journal Submission Guidelines\nWork can include: \n\nPoetry: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 50 lines each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf. If your poetry submission contains special formatting\, we suggest submitting a PDF in addition to your Word doc.\nFiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction and other prose: up to 3 pieces which do not exceed 4000 words each. Acceptable file types include doc\, docx\, odt & rtf.\nThe total number of submitted pieces cannot exceed 5\, even if your submission includes items from several genre categories.\n\nPlease provide a numbered list with the title of each work you are submitting (1 to 5 works) in the field of the Submittable form where indicated. \nEach submission must be accompanied by a document in doc\, docx or rtf format that provides a bio for each collaborator or your group. Bios must be in the third person and not exceed 150 words each. A single artist statement\, when relevant\, may be included in this document and should also not exceed 150 words. Please include your website\, Twitter and Instagram links if desired. \nBy submitting\, you guarantee you hold the rights to the work\, and you grant About Place Journal the rights to publish the submitted work with first serial rights (FNASR). After publication\, rights revert to the author. Original\, previously unpublished work only. All pieces must be submitted through Submittable\, starting January 1\, 2025.

SUMMARY:P - Maintenant: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing & Art Seeking Submissions about: Ethics Cleansing
DESCRIPTION:MAINTENANT 19 will feature DADA work on the theme of ETHICS CLEANSING.\nIn the face of right and wrong by the breed of weak or strong\, humanity has placed far too much emphasis on belongings\, not belonging. \nThere was a time when ethical behavior had a fixity of purpose: the prevention of corruption\, favoritism\, undue influence and abuse of entrusted power. \nYet it is those who commit these transgressions that prosper most\, by completely dispensing with the need for ethics. \nWhat exists is a philosophy where the only guiding principle is to ensure the greatest profits. \nMAINTENANT 19 is a testament to the unflinching exposure of self-righteousness. We are no longer bred to be rational creatures. Denial is key. Freedom from blame is the promise. But if blame we must\, then here we must first blame the face in the mirror that accepts this way of life. \nThese times of Ethics Cleansing enable some to think they are better than others\, but if someone must be better\, then let it be ourselves. \nPlease use a separate submission form for each piece. \nIMPORTANT Specifications:\n\nYou may enter up to 4 pieces for consideration\, and all entries should center on the theme of ETHICS CLEANSING.\nAll text files must be save as WORD documents (please do NOT send PDFs). Each entry should have its own separate Word document and separate submission form.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Gulf Stream Magazine. Theme: Last Words
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we wanted to bookend our Fall issue with the Spring issue. And so\, after Issue 35: First Words\, comes Issue 36: Last Words. We want you to send us your writing that has all the charge and desperation and absolute importance of the last words you’ll ever write. We want the last words between lovers\, the utterances that eek out of the cracks of a broken heart or perhaps the lines that break the heart of another. We want the last words before everything went sideways\, before everything ended and perhaps began anew in that ending. What are the words you would share with us if they were the only things we’d remember you by? How do your characters want to be remembered? What is the secret you need us to know before you go or the truth that comes out\, that slips\, that last thing you wish we’d ever hear but can’t take back anymore now that it’s out? If you had one last thing to give us\, one last thing to say\, one last thing part of yourself that needed a voice before the silence\, what would it be? We want that. \nMore important than any theme\, we welcome all submissions as long as they’re honest and authentic – what we want most of all is your best work. Work must be original\, created without the use of AI\, and previously unpublished (with the exception of translations – see genre guidelines). \nWe acknowledge that literary spaces traditionally have centered the white\, heterosexual\, cisgender male experience at the expense of other voices. We want to break from that tradition and are therefore especially interested in reading work from those who are often marginalized in literary spaces\, including Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC); all women\, including but not limited to\, trans and cis women; LGBTQIA+ people; agender\, gender non-conforming\, and nonbinary people; people with disabilities; and people who live at the intersections of identities. \nLimits \nFiction: 5\,000 words (or 3 pieces of up to 1\,000 words) \nCreative Nonfiction: 5\,000 words \nPoetry: 3 poems per submission \nHybrid: 5\,000 words (may include up to 5 images\, B&W only) \nTranslations: 3 poems or 5\,000 words of prose (must include original piece) \nBook Reviews: 500-750 words (books must have been published within the past year) \nHow to submit \nPlease submit your work through submittable. \nNo submissions through email or mail unless you have an invite to do so from the editors. (For example\, prisoners may request to do this.) \nInclude a bio of up to fifty words along with your cover letter. \nWe do our very best to respond within 6 months\, but due to the volume of submissions\, it can sometimes take longer. \nGuidelines \n-Reading fee of $3. (For a fee waiver\, reach out to the editors). \n-International submissions are welcomed\, but English only this year. \n-Multiple submissions are welcome at $3 per submission\, but please\, no more than one submission per genre at a time. \n-Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you notify us if it’s accepted elsewhere.

DESCRIPTION:Volume 5\, Issue 1 theme: CURRENT \nThe Old Scratch Press team asks that all fiction/non-fiction pieces adhere to a word count of 1000 words or less.\nThe first theme for 2025 is CURRENT. “Start thinking now\,” says contributing editor Nadja Maril\, “about our spring theme current.” \nWhat ideas does the word current evoke for you? Are you thinking about being hip\, cool and up on “current” events or are you traveling on an air “current.” Where does the word take you? Try writing a story about yourself\, something you observed\, or something entirely imaginary. \nSubmissions close MARCH 16\, 2025 and the issue publishes MAY 1\, 2025. \nPlease don’t use AI to make your writing. \nDo look at the magazine. We have unusual covers\, great writing and art\, and we always submit to Best of the Net. \nAll work must be original and must belong to the author. Works that have been previously published will not be considered. Stories must be complete and self-contained (i.e.\, do not submit chapters of a larger work). NOTE: Accepted works will be published as submitted without editing; as such\, in addition to the originality of the work itself\, we are looking for manuscripts that are clean and press ready. Be sure to review your grammar\, spelling\, tenses\, proper punctuation\, and other general rules of the written word before hitting “Send.” \nPlease include a brief bio (0-200 words\, with links) to be included on the contributors’ page of the magazine if your work is chosen. Feel free to use AI to write\, edit\, or tighten up your bio. \nWe follow up each issue with a live Zoom reading

DESCRIPTION:Short story contest #45. Its premise is\nSOMEWHERE ELSE \nFor this contest\, write a creative\, compelling\, well-crafted story between 1\,000 and 5\,000 words long in which someone or something important to the story is not where it/they always have been\, or where it/they would be expected to be located\, or is in the process of changing their location from where it/they have always been. The distance someone or something has moved (or is moving) is not important\, but the change in location must be important to the story. Whether this new location is an improvement or a problem is up to you. \nGENRE RULES: No fiction aimed at readers younger than 12\, no exploitative sex\, no over-the-top grossout horror. Also\, no stories that are obvious parodies of existing fictional worlds/characters created by other authors. (For the same reason\, we do not accept “fan fiction”.) Follow those rules and we’ll take anything from the most super-realistic literary drama to crazy farces (real-world or otherwise) to any variant of science fiction or fantasy you can imagine. Read our past issues and you’ll see. \nDEADLINE: 11:59 PM Eastern Time\, Friday\, March 28\, 2025 \nOne entry per author. There is no fee for entering this contest. \nRemember to take all identifying information out of your story! Tell us who you are in the space provided in the web form cover letter you get when you click on the “submit” button\, NOT in your story! No headers\, no bylines… just the story. \nOn The Premises magazine accepts submissions in the following formats only: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)\, Rich Text Format (.rtf)\, plain text (.txt)\, and OpenOffice/NeoOffice (.odt). If you have any questions\, please write to Questions@OnThePremises.com. Thanks!

SUMMARY:PFN - Submissions Open for Jelly Squid Magazine Issue 3 on the Theme of Proximity
DESCRIPTION:A brief reminder: Jelly Squid accepts work from writers of all backgrounds\, but we are especially interested in publishing work from writers who have been published six times or less (or not at all). This is not a requirement\, but if this is you\, please let us know! We want to give your work the time and attention it deserves.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJelly Squid was created out of a desire to seek out and uplift voices that feel innovative and new. We want to see work so raw and full of life that it practically bleeds – work so fresh and unique that it changes the way we read. If you feel that undeniable ache to share it\, we want to see it. Send us your experimental narratives\, your ergodic autofiction\, your unfinished-but-finished manuscripts – send your offputting\, your abstract\, your authentic.\n\n\nPlease send all submissions by email to jellysquidmag@gmail.com. Prose submissions can be up to 4\,000 words. Poetry submissions can include up to three poems that equal no more than six pages in total length (please submit all poems in one document). Please only send us one submission per reading period. We also ask that you send us a short third-person bio along with your submission. Do not include your name anywhere in the document you are submitting.\n\nIf you are previously unpublished\, please let us know in your email – one of our main goals with this publication is to uplift emerging and previously unpublished writers. We love to see work from young writers\, but please do not submit if you are under 18. Do not submit work created using AI. Also – this should go without saying\, but we want to be clear – we at Jelly Squid do not stand for transphobia\, racism\, homophobia\, misogyny\, ableism\, or any bigotry of any sort. If you send us work that expresses bigoted views\, we will automatically reject it and will not consider any future work you might send our way. \n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but make sure to let us know. If you have to withdraw a piece (or pieces)\, let us know immediately via email (please put “SUBMISSION WITHDRAWAL” in your email subject line). We do not accept previously published work. If you’ve had your work published by us before\, please wait to submit again until a full issue cycle has passed since the issue you were published in (for example\, if you had your work published in Issue 1\, you can submit to us again for Issue 3). \n\nWe do not currently offer payment upon publication as we are new and independently run\, but we hope this can change at some point in the future. Submissions are always free. All rights revert to authors upon publication.\n\nContinue reading for more detailed genre-specific submission guidelines.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPOETRY:\n We accept any form of poetry\, but especially appreciate free verse and prose poetry. We like to see poems that are raw and honest – poems that surprise us\, make us shiver\, make us think.\n Please submit no more than three poems at a time. We ask that you submit your poems together in one document (please do not include any information about yourself in said document).\n Please limit your work to 6 pages or less total. Do not submit more than one packet of poems at a time.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece(s)\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – Poem 1\, Poem 2\, and Poem 3 – Poetry Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFICTION:\n We like flash fiction\, micros\, autofiction\, character studies\, weird fiction\, and much more… any kind of work that has something to say without trying to limit itself to the confines of traditional storytelling models. We like stories that care more about expressing something unique and noteworthy than following a linear plot or a clear narrative. We do not accept science fiction or high fantasy\, but we are happy to accept pieces with sci-fi or fantasy elements. \n For flash fiction and short stories\, please limit your submission length to 4\,000 words or less. Do not submit more than one piece at a time.\n If you’re submitting micro fiction (400 words or less)\, you may submit up to three micros so long as they do not exceed six pages in total.  \n We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Fiction Submission) in the subject of your email. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNONFICTION:\n We like creative nonfiction\, but we may accept other forms of nonfiction if they feel engaging and personal. We want to hear the stories you’re not sure how to tell – the things you lie about\, the things you hide\, the things you can’t seem to get away from. We do not accept academic writing or formal criticism.\n Please limit your submission length to 4\,000 words or less. Please do not submit more than one piece at a time. We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Nonfiction Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHYBRID WORK:\n We love to see hybrid work – please don’t hesitate to send things our way that you’re not sure how to define. Finding pieces that blossom in the spaces between genres is one of the most exciting things to us about the work we get to read.   \n For hybrid work\, please limit your submission to six pages or less. You may submit up to three hybrid pieces as long as your work does not exceed six pages total. We ask that you submit in the form of a pdf or docx document that does not contain your name or any other identifying information within it.\n When submitting\, please include your name\, the title of your piece(s)\, and what type of work you are submitting (e.g. Jane Doe – My Story – Hybrid Submission) in the subject of your email.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re looking forward to seeing your work!

SUMMARY:PFN - Fox Tales Contests Winter Prize Theme "Rise or Ruin"
DESCRIPTION:Black Fox is accepting submissions for our winter writing prize. The theme for this round is “Rise or Ruin.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nGood reputation or bad? Reputations can mold destinies\, define legacies\, and/or echo through history. We invite writers to investigate a reputation’s power\, potential\, and frailty. Will your hero rise or will your legends fall? Give us themes of redemption\, scandal\, honor\, or betrayal—where truth or lies can shift the direction of a life or shatter a legacy in a single moment. We’re looking for work that will uncover truths behind personas and reveal the complex layers of how we are perceived and remembered. \nPlease submit your strongest fiction\, nonfiction\, or poetry\, and we will choose one winner that we feel interprets the theme best. The prize is $325 and print publication in the Summer 2025 issue. All submissions are considered for print publication in the Summer 2025 issue. The contest entry fee is $12\, and submissions must be submitted before midnight (EST) on March 30\, 2025. \nPlease make sure your manuscript is double-spaced with 12-point font. Submissions should be no more than 5\,000 words. For poetry\, send up to three poems in the same document. For flash fiction\, send up to two stories in the same document. Author’s name and page number should appear in the top right-hand corner of every page. We also ask that you specify the category/genre of your work in the cover letter. Please see our Submission Guidelines before submitting. \nWe will select a winner by the end of June 2025\, and each entrant will receive a response. \nPlease DO NOT submit work that isn’t ready. Take your time and polish your work to the best of your ability before sending it in. No changes can be made to your submission after we receive it. \n***Writers\, please note that entry fees are non-refundable\, and payment to the winner is awarded via PayPal. We reserve the right to extend the contest deadline if necessary.*** \nThe Black Fox team looks forward to reading your wonderful submissions!

SUMMARY:PFN - Sinister Wisdom: A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal Seeking Submissions from: SWANA Dykes
DESCRIPTION:*Submissions are restricted to lesbians.* \nThe SWANA Dykes issue of Sinister Wisdom will highlight poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, essays\, oral histories\, and genre-bending work from Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) dyke\, lesbian\, queer\, transgender\, and gender non-conforming artists. Submissions from Black transgender and gender non-conforming artists will be prioritized. \nThe SWANA region is often referred to as “The Middle East.” This terminology is Eurocentric and homogenizes a vast region that consists of people of diverse histories\, ethnicities\, cultures\, religions\, and languages. SWANA serves as a regional signifer rather than a political or racial one. Artists from the SWANA region as well as various SWANA diasporas are welcome to submit. \nWe want work that showcases SWANA dykes in their most authentic element\, work that calls upon SWANA dykes who are ready and willing to tell their stories\, SWANA dykes who are looking for a home for their stories. \nWe’re seeking work that deconstructs social categorization – racial\, gender\, nationalist\, religious\, and sexual categorizations placed upon those deemed other by imperialism\, colonialism\, and militarization. Art that interrogates the experiences of violence against diasporic people and that decries violence perpetuated within the SWANA region – such as the U.S. Muslim Ban enacted in 2017\, the Kafala System – an abusive system against migrant domestic workers\, and the 75+ years of the occupation of Palestine. \nThis issue of Sinister Wisdom aims to create conversations surrounding the diverse experiences of SWANA dykes and recognize their stories in different mediums. We’re seeking work that explores the myriad of ways dykes relate to each other – art that celebrates sex\, sensuality\, and romantic love. Art that is lustful and intimate\, that is bitter and sardonic\, that is craving and crying at the same time. Art that thrashes against hetero- and cis-normative confines\, that seeps with rage against militarization and memorializes those lost to warfare and violence. Art that is full of love for those who fight against repression and cultivate futures for their loved ones. \nPoetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, oral histories\, visual art\, and genre-bending work will be accepted through September 20th\, 2024 to March 30th\, 2025. Written pieces can be in any language; pieces written entirely in a non-English language should include an English translation. Artists are welcome to add a pseudonym under which they would like to be published if there are privacy concerns. Previous publication experience is not required. Submissions are accepted through submittable (sinisterwisdom.submittable.com) and should be submitted as one document of up to 10 pages\, along with a brief bio and any applicable social media. \nWe look forward to reading your piercing\, insightful\, critical\, hilarious work.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Irenaut Seeking Submissions on: Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the release of our Autumn issue—where our contributors delve into the theme of Women and Peace—we’re thrilled to announce the focus of our next edition: Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace. \nIn a world grappling with environmental and social crises\, Indigenous knowledge systems\, rooted in harmony with nature and community\, offer invaluable perspectives. Despite centuries of marginalisation\, these ways of knowing hold profound truths and solutions urgently needed today. \nWe invite writers\, poets\, scholars\, journalists\, thinkers\, and artists of all disciplines to share their insights and creativity on this vital topic. Let’s honour and amplify these voices as we envision a more peaceful\, sustainable future together. \nHow to make a submission: \nWhile Indigenous Peoples and Pathways to Peace is the special focus of the Spring issue\, submissions on other topics will be considered on their own merits. The closing date for submitting a summary (up to 300 words) is 31st March 2025 and your full contribution should reach us by 30th April 2025. How do you keep it alive? \n\n\nWe’re looking for your most ambitious\, imaginative writing on any touchpoint within this theme\, whether it’s the childhood games you played\, the songs you can’t leave behind\, the seeds you plant in the daylight\, or the secrets you whisper in the dark. \n\n\nALL submissions are accepted through our Submittable portal only. \nWe only accept previously unpublished work; Riddle Fence contributors may appear in the magazine once per calendar year. SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to Magma Poetry 93. Theme: Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Call for Submissions: Magma 93\nClosing date: 31st March\, 2025\n\n\nWe welcome poems that have not been previously published\, either in print or online. \nPoems may be sent online via Submittable\, or by post if you live in the UK or Ireland. \nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please withdraw your submission or contact us if it is accepted for publication somewhere else first. \nEditors Isabelle Baafi\, Sohini Basak and Tim Tim Cheng are excited to invite submissions for Magma 93: The Liberation Issue. The issue will explore personal and political forms of liberation: liberation as protest and emancipation; as authenticity and self-actualisation; as holding on or letting go; as moving past\, moving through\, moving towards. \nWe encourage you to imagine as widely as possible\, and to write with honesty and abandon. What does ‘liberation’ mean to you? What does it look like? How do we know when we have it? Are we ever truly free? \nSubmissions may respond to one or several of the current humanitarian crises happening around the world: the structures of domination that terrorise populations in occupied regions\, and/or the forms of disenfranchisement oppressing communities worldwide. \n—-Don’t believe our outlines\, forget them\n—-and begin from your own words.\n—-As if you are the first to write poetry\n—-or the last poet.\n——— from ‘To a Young Poet’ by Mahmoud Darwish\, translated by Fady Joudah \nPoems may draw inspiration from historical liberation movements – the protests\, rebellions\, revolutions – or the ideas that underpinned them\, the people who made them possible. \nEqually\, you may choose to focus on the more personal\, quotidian forms of freedom that have marked your life: the euphoric all-clear\, the overdue goodbye\, the bittersweet departure\, the hard-won recovery\, the long-awaited release: \n—-Of lockdown\, hunger time & the blackened flower —\n—-Ain’t nothing worth knowing. Prison becomes home;\n—-The cell: a catacomb that cages and the metronome\n—-Tracking the years that eclipse you.\n——— from ‘House of Unending’ by Reginald Dwayne Betts \n…Or even the objects\, people and communities who have represented liberation to you. What forms of freedom are underrated or overlooked? \n—-Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything\nelse in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance.\n——— Susan B. Anthony \nWhose liberation should we support? How can we help to make it a reality? What does it mean to be a liberator? \nWe invite work that interrogates how liberation happens: how it is envisioned and eroded\, how it manifests and spreads through sociopolitical echelons\, phases of life\, changing environments\, shifting ideologies. And how does one person’s liberation affect others? \n—-Liberation is thus a childbirth\, and a painful one. The man or woman who emerges is a new person\, viable only as the oppressor-oppressed contradiction is superseded by the humanization of all people.\n——— Paulo Freire\, translated by Myra Bergman Ramos \nOn the other hand\, feel free to veer wildly if you like\, choosing instead to write poems that reflect on how difficult liberation can be to achieve\, how elusive it may be\, despite its significance: \n—-My father taught me wherever you are\, always be looking for a way out: this\n—-opening or that one. Or a question. Sharp enough to slice a hole for you to slip\n—-through.\n——— from ‘Zuihitsu’ by Jenny Xie \nWe welcome poems that examine what it means to be trapped\, detained\, repressed. How do we bear it when liberation seems impossible? \n—-Spring broke out but my soul did not.\n—-It kept to sleet and inwards fog.\n—-Forget-me-nots around the path\,\n—-a speckled thrush; I spoke rarely\n—-and had a sour mouth. I couldn’t make love.\n——— from ‘Fly’ by Fiona Benson \nDon’t feel like you have to use the word ‘liberation’\, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box: what is the price of freedom? Who pays it? \n—-the children of haiti\n—-are not mythological\n—-we are starving\n—-or eating salty cakes\n—-made of clay \n—-because in 1804 we felled\n—-our former slave captors\n—-the graceless losers sunk\n—-vindictive yellow\n—-teeth into our forests\n——— from ‘mud mothers’ by Lenelle Moïse \nAnd once we are free\, what then? What do we do with the remnants of our struggle\, or our former selves? What does it mean to be free in the face of memory? What does moving forward look like? \n—-Return in thought to the concert where music flared.\n—-You gathered acorns in the park in autumn\n—-and leaves eddied over the earth’s scars.\n—-Praise the mutilated world\n—-and the gray feather a thrush lost\,\n—-and the gentle light that strays and vanishes\n—-and returns.\n——— from ‘Try to Praise the Mutilated World’ by Adam Zagajewski \nPoems may draw from various genres\, appear in unexpected ways\, or utilise traditional forms – or all of the above\, or none of them. But ultimately\, they should release you from your own predetermined limits. We are interested in the apparent\, necessary concepts of liberation\, but equally we welcome submissions that push the boundaries of what liberation means and how we understand it. \nSurprise us\, incite us\, enlighten us. We can’t wait to read what you send. \nHOW TO SUBMIT \n\nThe submissions window for ‘Ownership’ is open 1st – 31st March 2025\nWe welcome poems that have not been previously published in print\, online\, or broadcast.\nWe accept simultaneous submissions\, but please withdraw your submission or contact us if it is accepted for publication somewhere else first.\nYou may submit up to 4 previously unpublished poems: ONLINE via Submittable in a single Word or PDF document\, OR BY POST to Magma 93 Submissions\, 23 Pine Walk\, Carshalton\, SM5 4ES. Postal submissions are accepted from the UK and Ireland only. Postal submissions are not acknowledged until a decision is made.

SUMMARY:PFN - Potomac Review Seeking Submissions on: The Unseen
DESCRIPTION:Writers may interpret these themes in a myriad of ways. \nLike othering\, not seeing is also a choice. We are not the only ones who observe and perhaps even engage in forms of mimesis. Just as self implies other\, the seen implicates the unseen. Much can be seen and understood\, but there is an ever-vanishing horizon\, and the other\, and the unseen\, call into this future. \nSeeing and failure to see are literary matters\, and while our themed issues will be capacious enough to allow for each writer’s vision—transgressive\, disruptive\, queer\, representative of the animal turn in the Anthropocene—they will be defining enough to proscribe that vision into the form of a task\, an aesthetic task\, where literature is itself seen as a form of reconciliation that does not recognize otherness\, difference\, disfiguration\, or boundaries except as an also-I where the unseen is that aspect of artistic creation that is ahead of its time\, that reveals itself as what has not yet been seen. \nWe try to respond within four to six months. \nWe do not accept multiple submissions. We cannot accept submissions from individuals currently associated with Montgomery College. \nFiction & Nonfiction\nWhile we don’t have specific word limits for fiction submissions\, we are\, like everyone else\, constrained by final page counts. The longer the work\, the more difficult it is to find room for it; on the other hand\, we’ve never turned down something we loved. \nWe only ask that you withdraw your submission if it has been accepted elsewhere. And please\, only send us one submission at a time. Thank you. \nPlease note that we do not publish academic essays; we’re interested solely in creative nonfiction. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll read stories and essays of any size\, though typically we find it difficult to make room for works that run much longer than 7\,500 words. \n\n\nWe enjoy non-fiction narratives and creative essays; we’re sorry to say we do not accept academic essays. If it’s something in between? Feel free to try us. \n\n\nIf your work has been accepted elsewhere\, please withdraw it from Submittable. We will be happy for your success\, and happier to avoid confusion down the road. \nPoetry\n\n\n\n\nInclude up to five poems for each submission. \n\n\n\n\nIf you are submitting simultaneously and one or more of your poems are accepted elsewhere\, please make a note of it on your submission in Submittable

SUMMARY:PFN - Boudin: The Online Home of The McNeese Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme: Blooms in Dusk
DESCRIPTION:Blooms in Dusk–April (Guest Editor Jade Turner) \nAhh\, Spring. April is a marker that the Spring season is in full swing\, and as greeting cards tend to remind us\, Spring is for new beginnings; for hope; for renewal. Although uplifting\, these positive associations with the season are\, in themselves\, romanticized ideals. This April’s issue is interested in pieces that diverge from the typical images of a hopeful\, shining Spring and self\, and instead\, turn toward exploring and expressing that which the season inherently shuns and attempts to sanitize with its annual appearance. Think of this issue as a call to resurrect the suppressed self. Pieces can touch on any aesthetic or form as they give voice to the stifled feelings or impulses that withstand that sanitization. Instead of inhaling the refreshing air of Spring\, let us take a moment to rebelliously hold our breath\, then inhale the sinking feeling in the air. After all\, things grow in the dark\, too. \nDeadline April 1st\, 2025. No fee! Aim to keep the fiction/CNF/hybrids under 5\,000 or so words. You may submit up to three poems/microfictions (under 500 words).

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Moss Puppy Magazine. Theme: Amberfields
DESCRIPTION:Call For Submissions: Amberfields\n\n\nFor our eighth issue\, we journey into the golden and bittersweet theme of “Amberfields.” We are seeking prose and poetry that captures the warmth and nostalgia of fields bathed in amber light\, as well as the longing\, transience\, and beauty that lie beneath their glow. We invite you to interpret this theme both literally and abstractly: imagine the sun-drenched haze of wheat fields\, the golden hues of autumn leaves\, or the glimmer of amber resin preserving memories of the past. Consider the contrast of fleeting seasons\, the interplay of light and shadow\, or the landscapes of memory and imagination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIssue 8: What We’re Looking For\n\n\nWe are particularly interested in pieces that delve into themes of warmth\, memory\, and transience\, including personal experiences with nostalgia and change. Explore the golden glow of sunlight filtering through tall grasses\, the bittersweet beauty of fading seasons\, and the hidden shadows cast by the amber light. Themes might include the cyclical nature of life\, the seeds of new beginnings\, or the weathered remnants of what once flourished. \n \nWe seek emotionally resonant pieces that linger with us long after we’ve experienced them\, much like the wistful beauty of an amber-hued field at dusk. Whether you choose vivid imagery of golden landscapes or more metaphorical explorations of nostalgia\, transformation\, or impermanence\, we encourage you to interpret the theme in your unique way. \n \nLet your creativity wander through the radiant expanse of “Amberfields.” We can’t wait to see how you bring this theme to life through your words and art. \nGuidelines\n\nRestrictions: You must be 18+ to submit. Do not submit work that encourages or promotes hate (racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, fatphobia\, etc.). If your work is not accepted\, wait until the following submission period to submit again.  \n \nSimultaneous Submissions: Encouraged – just withdraw via email if it’s accepted elsewhere! \n \nPreviously Published: No – we ask for First North American serial rights and credit if placed elsewhere. Rights revert back to you after publication. \n\nPoetry\n\n\nPreferred Formatting: \n12 point font \nTimes New Roman \nsingle-spaced \n \nSubmit up to three poems separately using the appropriate Google Form. \n\nPoems can appear within one document\, but should be submitted separately for organizational purposes. \n\nProse\n\n\nPreferred Formatting: \n12 point font \nTimes New Roman \ndouble-spaced \nindented \n \nSubmit up to 3\,000 words of prose using the appropriate Google Form. \n\nProse can appear within one document\, but should be submitted separately for organizational purposes.
