SUMMARY:PFN - Minerva Rising Seeks Submissions: Then\, Now\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Minerva Rising\, an independent literary press that celebrates the creativity and wisdom in every woman\, will be accepting submissions for its special 10th anniversary anthology. \nThen\, Now\, and Future –– the editorial team is looking to publish both previous and new contributors’ poetry\, fiction\, and creative nonfiction work to help celebrate the themes of growth\, change\, and reflection. As writers\, we constantly catalog and memorialize ourselves and experiences into succinct pieces that act\, at times\, as time capsules. Our writing often begs us to consider who we were a year ago\, five years ago\, ten years ago. As artists\, our writing captures and reflects the changes enacted in our personal lives. There is power in both the act of writing but also in the sharing. Inviting readers to explore our work showcases vulnerability\, strength\, and connection. Often\, we learn who we were or who we can become from rereading previous work. There’s a prompting of reflection that pushes us to ask what’s next? We’re often taught not to look back\, to live in the present\, to not focus on the future\, but what if that curiosity propelled reflection and introspection? What if\, instead of labeling writing as old and new\, we celebrated it like we celebrate our lives with loved ones? What if we collected ourselves\, and the work of others\, into a collection that spoke of hope? \nThe reading period for Then\, Now\, and Future will be open until June 5\, 2020. We look forward to reading your work.

SUMMARY:PN - Kosmos Journal Quarterly Seeks Submissions: "Blessed Community | The Families We Make"
DESCRIPTION:  \nCircle of Friends\, Nancy Earle\nDuring the pandemic\, many found comfort in forming pods\, (small groups of loved ones and friends)\, and in joining online groups and sharing circles that supported co-learning\, activism\, spiritual connection\, or simply provided moral support. Such connections can bind us more strongly than our blood-family relationships. \nIntentional communities are not new. They include ecovillages\, housing cooperatives and spiritual communities such as monasteries. Yet\, these are also evolving to serve the needs of new generations. Transition Towns\, residential land trusts and farming cooperatives have strengthened local economies and cultures of sharing. \nSuch groups\, large and small\, often have a set of values members hold in common\, like confidentiality\, mentorship\, and recognition of historic trauma. Circles may use story\, art and music help members heal and  provide a deep sense of belonging. We are reinventing community from the ground up! \nWhat are the intentional groups\, circles and heart-families you have created or joined? How would you describe the values or guiding principles of the group? In what ways have your groups transformed you? What does the term ‘blessed community’ mean to you? How has ‘coming to circle’ awakened something deep within you or enabled you to serve your community in a new way? \nThese are some of the questions we seek to explore in the Summer edition of Kosmos Quarterly. We welcome your essays up to 1200 words\, poems\, art and other works. Please review our submission guidelines carefully.

SUMMARY:N - Seeking Submissions on: "Cars Against Humanity"
DESCRIPTION:Accepting Submissions\n\n\nWe want the essays in this volume to help readers understand the deadly automotive ecologies that have emerged around the world over the past century.  Because we expect this anthology to provoke as wide as possible a discussion about whether the sacrifices we’ve made for cars are worth it\, we especially welcome: \n\nsubmissions that address the peculiarities of a local transit culture\nsubmissions by people who don’t think of themselves as writers or scholars\nsubmissions from authors outside the global North\n\nAlthough essays may contain a personal element\, contributions should focus on description and exploration of the anti-life ecology created by cars. \nWe’re not looking for: essays on carbon emissions and global warming (this volume will focus on local ecologies)\, personal stories about driver-caused death and injury (unless such stories are situated as part of a broader ecological analysis)\, essays written by cars pretending to be people. \n\n\nTopics might include: \n\nroadkill disposal work\nbody-car encounters\nhow cars change laws\nhighway geographies and urban segregation\ncars and masculinities\nthe impact of cars and roads on multi-species worlds\nautomobile soundscapes vs. avian soundscapes\nasphalt economies\nanimal/human mobilities and disabilities vs. automobilities\nthe ineffable romance of being stuck in traffic\ncars as housing\nanimals living in or destroying cars\n\n…and many others we haven’t thought of. \n\n\nWord count:\n500-4500 words per piece.

SUMMARY:P - Cæsura Seeks Poetry with the Theme: Reset
DESCRIPTION:Cæsura 2022: Reset \nThe Call: Blinded by fractured light through the broken view of a kaleidoscope that has twisted our senses into a cloud of fever dreams; we reach\, strive for a pattern of hope\, a tessellation that integrates all our broken parts into a creation of beauty. Together we replant the seeds. We reset our gaze on the intricate and fertile patterns of empathy and love. \nThe editors will judge from blind lists to create the two unique versions of Cæsura Reset\, the print version and the online version. \nNEW and UNPUBLISHED poets\, every year we recruit\, appreciate\, and publish your work. Please add the comment “Not yet published” to your cover page. \nEveryone may submit up to 3 literary works \nWe reserve first-print publication rights and the right to post work for publication on our website. Previously published work\, in print or online\, will not be considered. \nWe are partial to poems of 32 lines or fewer\, but make exceptions for longer poems that are too good to pass up. \nWe prefer prose of 320 words\, but will consider anything less than 1000. \nLonger works of any style or format will be considered for the print edition but are more likely to appear online.

SUMMARY:PFN - Eternal Haunted Summer Seeks Submissions on: "Other-Than-Human Realms"
DESCRIPTION:Other-Than-Human Realms.  In many cosmologies\, Earth is the middle realm\, the land of mortals. Other realms — above\, below\, sideways and sidewise — are home to other-than-human peoples. Some of these lands are forbidden to mortals\, while some we can visit only in dreams or trance. But wherever and whatever they are\, they are not our home; they belong to Others. Send us poems about Olympus and Hyperborea\, Annwn and Alfheim. Send us short stories about the court of a Fae Queen\, the garden of a peri\, Hy-Brasil and Feather Mountain. Send us essays about the Garden of the Hesperides\, the Land of Manu\, and fiery Muspelheim. [Please note that we are not interested in fictional lands such as Narnia\, Wonderland\, or Oz.] b \nWhat are the Submission Guidelines? We’re looking for hymns to Odin and Inanna and Sekhmet. Prayers to Hermes and Brigid and Asherah. Short stories featuring (or otherwise referencing) Lugh and Yinepu and Hekate. Every poetic form\, from sonnet to rhyming couplet to free form\, is acceptable. There is no set length. Any genre of short story is welcome\, from mystery to fantasy to true lifeish to reimaginings of classic myths\, provided the Deities and heroes are treated respectfully (no bashing someone else’s Gods\, please!). There is no length limit\, but if you are planning to write a novella\, please discuss that with the editors of EHS in advance; any story over 5000 words will likely be serialized across two or more issues. \nPoems or stories that feature Deities from pantheons generally considered to be outside the Pagan umbrella\, but which are still from polytheistic traditions — such as a poem to the Hawaiian Pele or a short story focusing on the Shinto Amaterasu-omikami — are absolutely welcome. The wider the diversity of traditions represented\, the happier the editors are. \nWe are also interested in essays which address the nature of the Deities\, the mythologies of the various pantheons\, folklore\, ritual\, et cetera and et cetera. So\, for example\, we would be keen to read your essay on Hermanubis and how He relates to Hermes and Anubis. Or\, your essay examining primary sources for The Cailleach. Or\, a discussion of the evolution of Veles from (benevolent) God of the Underworld to (Christian) demon and how Polish and Slavic Pagans are resurrecting His worship. \nWhat we do not want: anything about Atlantis\, Mu\, UFOs\, aliens\, or subterranean civilizations. No gore or excessive violence. Sexual content will be judged on a submission by submission basis.

SUMMARY:P - CBC Poetry Prize
DESCRIPTION:Poetry   (up to 600 words; in verse or prose)* \nCompetition opens: April 1\, 2022 \nDeadline: May 31\, 2022 \n*(Word count includes all words contained in the work including but not limited to titles\, footnotes\, introductions\, etc. Submissions over the specified word count will be disqualified.) \nOur word limits are strict in each category. To calculate word counts\, we put your entire submission (including the title) into Microsoft Word and use Word’s word counter. Since Word only relies on spaces to delimit words\, any term containing a hyphen (“twenty-five”) or an apostrophe (“can’t”\, “don’t”) counts as a single word. Word also counts every article (“the”\, “a”\, etc.) as a separate word. Microsoft Word also automatically counts groups of characters (e.g. “xxx”) as well as symbols (e.g. “***” or “~~~”) as a word. \nParticipants may submit as many texts as they wish in one or all categories. A writer can win only one prize per category. Each text may be submitted to only one category. \nFor each manuscript entered\, participants must complete a separate official entry form and pay the entry fee. \nParticipants must verify the exact deadlines on the cbcbooks.ca website. Please note that CBC/Radio-Canada is permitted to modify these deadlines at any time. \nOnline submission: all works must be submitted and payments must be made on or before 11:59 PM (ET) on the day of the deadline. \nWinners will be announced approximately six months after the deadline for each competition. \nHOW TO SUBMIT\nAll submissions must: \n\nBe submitted online by creating an account through Submittable. Submittable is an external site designated by CBC/Radio-Canada to manage the submissions to the competition. They adhere to CBC’s privacy policy.\nBe accompanied by the official entry form and the parental permission (electronic or print version) if applicable\nBe submitted anonymously: the name of the entrant must not appear anywhere on the text to ensure the objectivity of the jury\nBe submitted in Word or Wordpad (.doc\, .rtf or .docx) format\, in letter format (8½” by 11”)\nBe double spaced\, except for poetry texts\nBe in a legible font and font size\nBe submitted to the correct category during the entry period for that category\n\nIf you are unable to submit your content online\, please contact the CBC Literary Prizes team to obtain an alternate form of entry. \nRestrictions: \n\nAll submissions are final: no changes or substitutions are allowed\nNo handwritten manuscripts or fax texts will be accepted\nTexts will not be returned and editorial comments will not be given on the works\n\nFees: \nA fee of $25.00 (taxes included) for administration purposes is required for each entry. The competition is 100% not-for-profit\, with all fees going towards covering administrative costs\, which include payment of readers and jurors of the competition. Participants are not eligible until payment of the registration fee has been received and cashed. The entry fee will not be refunded if your submission is ineligible. All submissions are final: entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. \nJUDGING\nWorks are judged anonymously on the basis of the participant’s use of language\, originality of subject and writing style. \nOnly the work submitted will be considered by the judges\, other documents\, images\, diagrams etc. are not eligible for consideration by the judges. \nSubmissions are processed by a two-tiered system in both languages (English\, French) by readers and jurors. \nThe initial texts are screened by readers chosen for each category from a group of qualified editors and writers across the country. Each text is read by two readers. \nThe English readers come up with a preliminary list of approximately 100 texts that are then forwarded to a second group of readers who will decide upon the approximately 30 entries that comprise the longlist and be forwarded to the jury. \nThe French readers come up with a longlist of approximately 20 texts that are forwarded to the jury. \nThe English and French juries will read all stories on the longlist and decide on a shortlist of five in each language\, which will include a first-place winner and four runners-up. The members of the jury (three per category) are composed of eminent writers and editors from the Canadian literary community. \nEvery effort is made to achieve a balance of gender and diversity in the readers and judges and to reflect regional differences and trends. The readers and jurors change every year and are based in different areas of the country. \nJurors and readers in each category will be chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Banff Centre. \nAll decisions by the readers and the jury are final (subject to meeting any conditions and eligibility criteria as determined by CBC). Readers’ names are confidential until the end of the competition to ensure the judging process remains blind. \nPRIZES\nCanada Council for the Arts will offer five cash prizes in each category and in each language: \n\nGrand Prize: $6\,000\nFour finalists will receive $1\,000 each\n\nMoreover\, the Grand Prize winner will receive a two-week residency at The Banff Centre approximately valued at $2\,500 which will include: \n\naccommodation and meals at The Banff Centre for two weeks;\n24-hour access to a studio; and\nopportunities to access Banff Centre events and performances for free.\n\nWinners must use their prize within two years of the prize award\, at a time mutually agreeable to the Banff Centre and the prize winner. This prize does not include travel costs to and from the residency at Banff. \nMoreover\, CBC/Radio-Canada will provide visibility to winners and their work on one or more of its platforms. \nParticipants may win only one prize per category. Participants maintain ownership of their works\, although rights to reproduce and distribute them to the public are limited by the licenses granted according to these rules. \nThe prize is not transferable and includes only what is specifically mentioned in these rules. If for any reason whatsoever\, the winner is unable to use the prize in whole or in part or is unwilling to accept or take advantage of the prize as described\, or a portion thereof\, the prize or portion thereof will be forfeited without compensation and CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, will be released from all obligations toward the winner with regards to the prize or portion thereof. \nIf a prize cannot be awarded as described in these rules\, CBC/Radio-Canada\, The Banff Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts reserve the right to substitute one or more prizes or prize components with another of approximately equivalent value. \nTo be proclaimed winners or finalists\, participants must meet all the conditions and eligibility criteria set out in these rules. The winners and finalists\, or in the of case minors\, their parents or guardians\, shall provide information requested by CBC in this regard\, and shall sign a declaration of eligibility for the competition\, as set out in these rules\, and release CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from any liability for damage or loss whatsoever\, whether arising from the participants’ involvement in this competition or from the awarding\, acceptance or use of the prize. \nA winner’s refusal to accept a prize releases CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from all obligations toward the winner. \nELIGIBILITY \nTexts submitted to CBC Literary Awards must be written in English (texts written in several languages and translations are not eligible). SUMMARY:N - Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review. Call for Papers on “Feminist Critique Here and Now”
DESCRIPTION:What is the continued role of feminist theory and feminist analysis in literary studies today in these lands claimed by Canada?  How and why is feminist analysis still relevant to our work? We seek contributions for a special issue of Canadian Literature on feminist critique and/in Canada today. \nWe invite contributors to respond to one or more of the following questions: \n\nWhat dialogues are taking place among feminists of different generations? What intergenerational dialogues need to take place? What can we learn from previous generations of feminists? Conversely\, what can we learn from younger generations?\nHow might it be useful to think about your work in relation to feminism\, even if you have not previously identified your work through feminist concerns? What kinds of trouble and/or alliances might be made by pairing your work with feminism?\nWhat forms of cultural production and activism are occurring at the nexus of trans and/or 2S/queer and feminist studies? What kinds of relations exist? What can trans and/or 2S/queer theory and feminist theory learn from each other?\nHow is feminism imagining ways out of racialized and gendered violence or articulating forms of resilience and resistance? SUMMARY:PFN - just femme & dandy Magazine Seeks Submissions on the Theme: "SUSTAIN"
DESCRIPTION:just femme & dandy is a literary & arts magazine for and by the LGBTQIA+ community on fashion. We offer a space in the literary & arts world that has yet to exist\, and hope to celebrate the queer\, trans\, non-binary\, and intersex community\, who have long since coded ourselves with how we adorn and dress our bodies when it has been dangerous to identify solely with words. Until recently\, we could only find a handful of models within popular culture and the public imagination to inform our own aesthetic choices\, and so the styles (and art) we don and make operate as a patchwork quilt\, collaged together with vintage and thrift store finds\, our sister or mother’s lipstick and gowns\, our father’s neckties and waistcoats. \nThe theme for Vol. 3 will be SUSTAIN. How can we use fashion to sustain us during this incredibly trying time? How has fashion sustained you in other times\, whether it be in terms of pain\, joy\, crisis\, or other challenges? We’d especially liked to hear submissions regarding: trans + queer pregnancies\, femme/fae bodies\, chronic pain/disability\, and given this theme\, we’d love to hear from mutual aid + food communities! And! Tell us about those Zoom outfits! Did you take on roller skating as a pandemic activity? What are you wearing to the parking garage or the skate park? Tell us in (get your) thread in the game\, our new sports/fitness/etc section (edited by Jen St. Jude)! We also have a brand new section called not what it seams (edited by Meca’Ayo Cole)\, which focuses on costume/cosplay – tell us about those solutions in productions\, drag\, or on the runway\, where you sustained your body while letting the look shine! \n We have no word count limitations\, but we ask that you be thoughtful about length as it relates to screen fatigue. \njust femme & dandy is an anti-racist\, pro-Black space. We prioritize submissions from artists of color. We seek work that addresses fashion and style as it relates to the lives of people who are LGBTQIA+\, including but not limited to bodypositivity and fatpositivity\, mental illness\, neurodiversity\, chronic illness\, disability\, non-binary\, intersex\, artists with intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD)\, and transgender lives.

SUMMARY:PF - Demos Rising Anthology: Historical and Modern Day Injustices and Breakthroughs
DESCRIPTION:In order to submit\, you must have bought a book (in any format) from the Fly on the Wall shop in 2022. (This will also qualify you to enter a manuscript to us in Autumn\, so definitely worth doing!) Email over the book receipt with your submission. \nIn an era of ‘post-truth’\, ‘fake news’ and misinformation\, the right to protest\, the right to a democratic society\, feel more urgent than ever. For anthology ‘Demos Rising’\, we will raise the voices of international writers and artists\, across genres and oceans\, to draw attention to worldwide injustices and celebrate the power of words to bring about change. \nWe will release the title in October 2022 and donate 5% of the profits to Amnesty International UK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe want you to create a piece on an issue which you are passionate about\, whether that be human rights or animal rights. We seek nuance\, perspective and authenticity. Whilst ‘Demos Rising’ is inherently political in its aims\, and this naturally lends itself to powerful and fierce interpretations and approaches\, we also welcome interpretations of uprising which brim with possibility\, celebration and humour. \nYou could write about democracy – what it means to you\, what breeds without it\, or you could write about a specific human rights emergency. We want the anthology to cover historical and modern day injustices and breakthroughs. \nWhat has the power of protest brought about so far? \nNewspapers are a great place to gain inspiration\, as is the Amnesty International Website. \nWhat genres are we looking for? \nPoetry (up to 70 lines) \nShort Stories (up to 5k words) \nFlash Fiction (up to 1k words) \n\n\nGuidelines\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmit your third person biography (up to 100 words)\, a short cover letter (just say why you want to submit to us and hello!) and up to three pieces in each category as listed above. \nThe submissions emails is flyonthewallpress@hotmail.com \nWe will respond to everyone by mid June. \nIf selected\, you will receive a free copy of the anthology\, discounts on further copies and the chance to perform at either a virtual or UK-based launch.

SUMMARY:PFN - Nat Brut Magazine: Blood & Water
DESCRIPTION:English-speakers often say that “blood is thicker than water” when talking about the bond of biological families. And yet\, for those who cannot survive by this adage\, there is the echo of a longer proverb:  “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” \nThis hidden inversion\, offering the possibility of a future more stable than our beginnings\, is a lifeline for survivors of developmental trauma. Without a stable past to tether us\, we float through life in a grief-state unnamable to those who have not lived within this space. We learn to speak in a shorthand of half-truths\, trying to translate the intimate loss of our childhood into terms intelligible for daily human interaction. \nBlood & Water is a rejection of this sanitized translation. Developmental trauma lives in a pre-linguistic space\, which means our experiences are bound to no recognizable shape or form. Here\, we invite survivors of all types of early trauma to create without fear of the truth. In this folio\, we believe that our wounds can be both grotesque and beautiful\, past and present\, universal and utterly unique\, if only we look long enough. \nWe encourage writers of all identities who carry the experience of developmental trauma to submit their work\, though we are particularly interested in the inherent queerness of creating chosen families in circumstances where biological families are unsafe. In any case\, this is a space for honesty and healing\, whatever that may look like for you. \n\nFolio Submission Guidelines\n\n\n\n\nWe aim to have a turn-around time of three months for all open submissions. \n\n\nPlease note that we are currently an online-only publication and are no longer releasing biannual print issues. Work accepted for publication online will\, however\, be considered for publication in any future Nat. Brut print anthology. \n\n\nPlease only send poetry\, stories and essays that are previously unpublished. We do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know in your cover letter and be sure to withdraw your piece promptly (via an email notification to folio@natbrut.com) if it’s accepted elsewhere. \n\n\nFor poetry\, please submit one to five poems in a single document (max of 10 pages). \n\n\nFor essays\, please send one submission (max of 10 pages). \n\n\nWe consider stories of any length. Please limit one story per submission.

SUMMARY:F - Fix's Second Annual Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Contest
DESCRIPTION:PREMISE\nFix\, Grist’s solutions lab\, invites you to submit a hope-filled climate fiction short story for our second annual contest\, Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. \nStories must be set anytime between today and the year 2200\, and show a path to a clean\, green\, and just future. We especially want to read — and share — narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by climate change and stories that envision what a truly equitable\, decolonized society could look like. In 3\,000 to 5\,000 words\, show us the world you dream of building. \nOf course\, we don’t expect you to be overly optimistic or Pollyannaish; 178 years of equitable climate progress will involve hard work\, struggle\, and adaptation\, and we invite you to show that\, too. \nWe’re also especially interested in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place\, customs\, cuisine\, and more); rich characters with intersecting identities; and stories that challenge the status quo in which wealth and power are built on extraction\, oppression\, and violence. \nWe’ll be looking for these core elements: \n\nHope\nVivid characters\nCultural setting\nCreative solutions\nDecolonized futures\n\nWe will also judge submissions based on the quality of artistic voice\, originality\, craft\, and technique\, as well as the depth of the environmental\, scientific\, historical\, and/or cultural background that informs the story. \nWhat we’re offering to winners:  \n\nCash prizes\nPublication on Fix’s site in the fall of 2022\nA reason to stay hopeful\n\nThe winning writer will be awarded $3\,000\, with the second- and third-place finalists receiving $2\,000 and $1\,000\, respectively. An additional nine finalists will get $300 apiece. All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Fix’s website — each with its own original art — and will be celebrated in a public virtual event. \nThe deadline for submission is May 5\, 2022\, by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Standard Time. \nPublication Date: Fall 2022 \nInspiration: Imagine 2200 draws inspiration from Afrofuturism\, as well as Indigenous\, Latinx\, Asian\, disabled\, feminist\, and queer futures. The contest is also grounded in hopepunk and solarpunk — literary genres that uplift equitable climate solutions and continued service to one’s community\, even in the face of despair. \nWe are excited to see what you write and to dive into the worlds you create! \nNuts & bolts\n\nEntry is free!\nSubmissions close May 5\, 2022\, 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Standard Time.\nThe contest is open to writers anywhere in the world.\nAuthors must be 18 years or older at the time of submission.\nSubmissions must be fictional stories between 3\,000 and 5\,000 words.\nSubmissions must be in 12-point Arial font and double-spaced. If you need accessibility accommodations\, please email the team at imaginefiction@grist.org.\nStories will be judged by a board of literary experts\, including acclaimed authors and editors Grace L. Dillon\, Arkady Martine\, and Sheree Renée Thomas.\nThe first-prize story will be awarded $3\,000; second prize is $2\,000; and third prize is $1\,000. Nine additional finalists will each receive $300.\nAll 12 final stories will be published on Fix’s website\, and the authors will be celebrated in a virtual event.\nWorldwide copyright and ownership of each story remains with the author.\nIf a story is accepted for publication\, Grist retains the first serial rights of the work to publish\, produce\, reproduce\, distribute\, and market.\nAll other remaining rights revert to the author upon publication.
